Edo govt, APC clash over civil unrest plot

Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, and Director of Publicity, All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council, Orobosa Omo-Ojo, have clashed over plan to orchestrate civil unrest in the state.

Nehikhare, yesterday at a news conference in Benin, said attention of Edo government was drawn to a plot by APC leaders to cause mayhem in the state, under the guise of protests and rallies, in order to advance their obnoxious political agenda.

He said: “APC leaders are resorting to this devious plan, because they have realised the folly of presenting an unlettered and incompetent candidate for the office of governor.

“Their candidate, Monday Okpebholo, has continued to embarrass the party and his handlers in private and public fora with his poor grasp of basic concepts and intellectual immaturity, consistently displaying inability to articulate and coherently sell his vision to the electorate and other key stakeholders.

“Reeling from the pains of selling a bad and unmarketable candidate and having failed in their desperate actions, PDP chieftains have resorted to lies and propaganda to hoodwink Edo people ahead of the September 21 governorship election. The only path the APC in Edo State now sees to promote their campaigns is to cause chaos and crisis in the state.

“Our findings reveal that the APC plans to incite civil unrest in Edo State and cause chaos, under the guise of riots and protests, in order to disrupt the peace and stability of the state, while diverting attention from their candidate’s weaknesses and buying time to avoid debates and meaningful engagement with the people.

“Edo State Government is aware of their evil plans, and will not sit idly and watch them unleash mayhem on the people and cause chaos in the state.”

Edo Commissioner for Communication and Orientation urged security agencies in the state to take notice of the planned heinous plan by the APC leaders to orchestrate civil unrest and cause mayhem.

Omo-Ojo, however, accused Governor Godwin Obaseki and his godson, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, of continuing to rehash phantom stories, which he described as a reflection of their fear of reprisals from Edo residents, who recently capitalised on the “#End Bad Governance” protest that was sponsored by Obaseki against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to search for their hidden palliatives, which Edo governor stored in the houses of PDP leaders in the state.

He said: “Obaseki organised the anti-federal government protest at King’s Square, Benin City with N200 million, all in his bid to demonise President Tinubu and APC, and punish Edo people, who he has deprived of their palliatives.

“Contrary to Obaseki’s expectation, while he was addressing his PDP members and political aides he gathered as protesters, the real protesters harkened the call by APC to locate their rice and other palliatives hidden in Edo State Government warehouses and houses of PDP members.

“The real protesters that were present in King Square hurled water sachets at Obaseki, while some called him useless man. Since our charge to Edo people to take back their rice, over four warehouses and private homes have been forced open by hungry men and women to collect what rightly belongs to them.

“The fear of losing the entire hidden grains led to Obaseki’s sudden hatred for organisers of the protest, who he now calls hoodlums. Same group of persons he praised for causing hardship on the streets of Edo State. Obaseki’s and Ighodalo’s incessant noise is a cover up for the grand economic corruption the two friends have committed against Edo people.”

JUST IN: 600 members dump LP, PDP, APGA for APC in Abia

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has welcomed approximately 600 defectors from four political parties into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia state.

The new members, previously affiliated with the ruling Labour Party (LP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Young Progressive Party (YPP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), were officially received during Kalu’s tour of electoral wards in his Bende Federal Constituency.

The Deputy Speaker who represents the constituency in the House of Representatives is currently on a thank you and mobilisation tour of the 13 electoral wards to show gratitude and also ascertain more of their immediate needs.

Amongst those who defected were former PDP councillors from Alayi Ward A, Hon. Enoch Elekwa and Hon. Chukwu Udensi, former LP ward chairman, Hon. Jonah Chukwu; YPP ward vice chairman, Ekeoma Sylvester Eze and former APGA local government chairman, Ndubuisi Sunday Agu.

Similarly, more than 100 persons publicly announced their defection from the PDP and other political parties to APC when Kalu visited Umuhu Ezechi Ward on Tuesday.

Speaking during the tour, a former Commissioner and Bende local government chairman who handed over to Kalu as a council chairman 22 years ago, Paul Chikezie Mba said the performance of the Deputy Speaker as a parliamentarian has attracted them to APC.

Mba also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law, while commending Kalu for attracting many projects to the ward.

“Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu overwhelmed my imagination. I know he is very intelligent. He has attracted so many roads, solar-powered energy for light, boreholes, rehabilitation and building of schools, health centres and so on. So many people have gained employment through him.

“He sent people abroad to learn one trade or another. He has exceeded my expectations. I tell him, what he’s doing is right and I want to support him.

“I handed over to him as local government chairman. From day one, he looked so vibrant. I have never had any doubt about him.

“Over a hundred people registered for APC in this ward on Friday. Another batch came out today. You can see the tumultuous crowd.

“The things you’ve done well. You’re a tough man, we are praying for you. May God bless you. I came to you and told you I will join you because of your performance. God is going to use you to clean up our community. We are just scratching the surface.

“We will sweep Umuhu Ezechi for you soon. I see the great sons of our land that accompanied you to Umuhu. The former speakers of the State House of Assembly and so on.

“We are returning more votes for you. You’re a man of strength and character. You started by talking about the Peace in South East Project (PISE-P) and move ahead with the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill. May God bless you, your colleagues in the National Assembly, and our President.”

Receiving the decampees, the Deputy Speaker said he was in Umuhu Ezechi to show gratitude to the people for voting for him in the 2023 general election.

He urged the people to continue to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who graciously signed the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill recently.

Kalu added that the commission will create employment for the people and also meet the infrastructural needs of the people.

The Deputy Speaker who was welcomed by the people with traditional dances later distributed bags of rice, fertilizers, and cash donations to the youth, women, and men’s groups in the area.

Also during his visit to the Ozuitem ward, over 100 persons from LP, PDP, APGA, and YPP defected to APC and were received by the deputy speaker who handed them a bunch of brooms as APC’s symbol.

Notable amongst them were Arc. (Chief) John Ihueze and Sunday Kalu Iroham who were hitherto chieftains of PDP; Adighije Okoronkwo from APGA and others from YPP.

Welcomed earlier by different dancing groups of youth and women, Kalu who told the crowd he was in Ozuitem to appreciate the people for their support in the last general election also distributed bags of rice and fertilizers with cash gifts to support them in agriculture.

Edo poll: PDP, APC trade blames over policeman’s death

All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State have traded blames over the death of a policeman in Benin City, Inspector Akor Onu.

PDP demanded that APC and its candidate for the September 21 governorship election, Monday Okpebholo, must face investigation for alleged roles in the violence that resulted in the death of the policeman on July 18.

Responding to the allegation made by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, in a statement yesterday, APC governorship campaign spokesman in Edo State, Mr. Sebastine Ebhuomhan, expressed shock that the PDP national headquarters was just reacting to the unfortunate incident solely to distract police investigation.

In his statement in Abuja yesterday, Ologunagba condemned APC leaders for giving scholarships to the children of the slain policeman, after allegedly orchestrating the violence that caused his death.

He said: “PDP maintains that APC leaders must not be allowed to hide under the guise of the scholarships to cover their complicity, manipulate and discourage the family of the slain police officer and the unsuspecting public from insisting on full investigation and prosecution of APC leaders implicated in the dastardly act.

“From their conduct, it is clear that the APC leaders have no value for human life and believe they can sweep the matter under the carpet and walk away from their crime.

“Our party restates its call on the Inspector General of Police to investigate with the preponderance of pictorial and video evidence, which show that thugs allegedly mobilised by the APC to escort its governorship candidate and other APC leaders from the Benin Airport into the city were responsible for the violence that claimed the life of the police officer.”

Reacting in a statement, APC governorship campaign spokesman in Edo State, Ebhuomhan, condemned the PDP national headquarters for attempting to sell ‘an ill-motivated afterthought’ to knowledgeable people of Edo State, saying PDP appeared to have suddenly woken up from slumber to try and distract police investigation into a killing that occurred weeks ago.

“PDP statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, calling for the investigation of the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the party members over the death of the gallant Police Inspector Akor Onu is a calculated distraction to the investigation of the Edo State Police Command, ordered by the Inspector-General of Police. It should be condemned by all democratic and peace loving citizens.

“How long has it taken Ologunagba and his PDP at the Federal, Edo State and governorship campaign levels to formally admit to the murder of Onu? None of these authorities, including the state government, deemed it reasonable to even mention the death of Onu in their past statements, only to now come out with this bizarre statement three weeks after the murder.

“During the long time, the same desperate and violent Edo State government and PDP rushed an untruthful petition to the police as well as an unsigned, illegal advert to media organisations to blackmail selected APC leaders and members at airport on the day of the murder. Almost all the organisations that published that blackmail have since apologised. This shows the extent of the evil party called PDP.

“It is good that Okpebholo, characteristically, has not abandoned the family of his friend and protector, Onu, even in death, unlike Governor Godwin Obaseki and his puppet, Mr. Akintunde Ighodalo, who often uses and dumps their helpers when they are still alive. Edo people are happy to hear that Okpebholo did not only visit Onu’s family, but also assumed the huge responsibilities the slain bread winner left behind.

“Lastly, PDP and Edo State Government need not distract police investigation of Onu’s murder; the evidence of how Obaseki’s Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and Edo State Public Work Volunteers (PUWOV) personnel murdered Onu and injured others is very clear.

“Those who shot and killed Onu have since taken refuge under Obaseki’s executive immunity after police invitation letters were served on them through the government. After all, everybody saw Obaseki threatening Edo State and Nigeria after receiving the letters.

“Okpebholo needs not remind anybody that Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funsho Adegboye, was not far away when ESSN murdered Onu,” the APC governorship campaign spokesman alleged.
