The headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State is currently on fire.

The secretariat was set ablaze during the violence that broke out during the #EndBadGovernance protest.

It was gathered that in Dutse, the state capital, irate young people had broken into the facility, destroying billboards and other promotional materials before setting the structure on fire.

They also torched cars that were parked within the premises.

Security personnel attempted to control armed youngsters, but they broke loose, resulting in violence that extended to other sections of the state.

The mob also attacked the home of the House of Representatives member representing Gumel, Gagarawa and Maigarati, as well as the residence of the APC Zonal Vice Chairman.

PDP, APC campaign councils clash in Edo

The Governorship campaign management council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State have clashed ahead of the September 21 poll.

The Director-General of PDP’s campaign council, Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, at a briefing in Benin, fired the first salvo, by alleging that unnamed leaders of APC had perfected plans with some policemen to harass, intimidate and persecute some members of PDP to cause chaos in Edo.

He said: “We urge the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to maintain the high integrity that is associated with his office, and also note that the Nigeria Police are for all Nigerians, and not the extension of APC.

“We also call on the IGP to use his good offices to cause an unbiased and thorough investigation, based on our complaints.”

The Director of Publicity, Edo APC governorship campaign council, Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo however berated Iduoriyekemwen and other leaders of PDP of being economical with the truth.

Omo-Ojo said: “Governor Godwin Obaseki and his handpicked godson, Asue Ighodalo, are agents of destabilisation. Their action, so far, is an attempt to harrass the police and block investigation of the violent crimes they have visited on the state and its people.

“In a saner clime, the PDP’s government in the state would have disbanded the Edo State Security Network (ESSN).”

Five APC women leaders dump party

Five women leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The five leaders led hundreds of APC members to join the PDP in Ikare Akoko, Akoko Northeast Local Government.

Among the defectors was the wife of Olukare of Ikare Akoko, Olori Muina Momoh and 18 high chiefs led by Chief Adubiaro.

They said they dumped APC because it has continued to entrench poverty and inflict pains on the people.

Adubiaro, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, said it was their desire to reverse the trend of lack and want across the country.

She said their belief that there was need for a rebirth for a better tomorrow informed their decision to part ways with the APC.

The defectors said they were determined to join hands with the PDP and its governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, to rebuild Ondo State.

They said they resisted pressure from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa not to defect because they believed APC had failed to deliver good governance.

I am not considering joining APC for now, says Kogi lawmaker

The member representing Yagba/Mopa Moro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Leke Abejide said on Monday, July 29, that he is not considering dumping his party, the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) for now.

Abejide, who is also the chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, however, said that he may be forced to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC) if his party, the Africa Democratic Congress becomes too hot for him.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Abejide who is the highest political office holder on the platform of the ADC said it we unfortunate that the national chairman of the ADC, Chief Ralph Nwosu will take a position on national issues without consulting him.

He, however, said that he remains a member of the ADC and is not planning to leave the party for now, but will only do so if things become unbearable.

He said: “I was in APC before joining the ADC. I left the party out of frustration by the former governor of my state.

“What happened was that our leader, late Prince Abubakar Audu died and we felt that the next person to take over from him was James Faleke, but things did not work that way. We took it as an act of God and we could work with the new government. But the government failed to work with us.

“I am a grassroots politician and I went to the ADC and contested and because I am always with the people, they voted for me and not the party. I won the election even from a small party.

“The problem is that during the 2023 Presidential election, I supported Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while my national chairman supported Peter Obi of the Labour Party. But if I keep getting frustrated from the party, I will have no choice but to join the APC.

“I have been the one that has saved the party from being deregistered and because of what I achieved, the next constituency to mine voted for ADC because they wanted to enjoy what we are enjoying. We even produced a state Assembly member. But the others have left for APC”.

Enugu assembly rerun: APC moves to rescue LP candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has taken upon itself a battle to get the jailed candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in a state assembly rerun election released. The APC alleges that the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southeast state used its influence to get the LP candidate jailed to pave the way for its (PDP) candidate in the rerun; a charge the ruling party denies. DAMIAN DURUIHEOMA reports

The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has embarked on a campaign to free the Labour Party (LP) House of Assembly candidate for Enugu South Urban State constituency, Bright Ngene, from jail.

The LP candidate defeated his closest rival and PDP candidate, Sam Ngene during the 2023 general election. He scored over 5200 votes, while the PDP counterpart secured 2000 votes. He was subsequently sworn in as an Enugu State House of Assembly member.

However, the PDP candidate went to the tribunal praying the court to declare that the election was inconclusive. Consequently, the Appeal tribunal ordered a rerun in eight polling units, with the rerun failing to occur on two occasions over reports of manipulation and violence.

However, ahead of a yet-to-be-announced date for the rerun, a matter which involved the LP candidate and his Akwuke community seven years ago was resurrected at the Enugu Magistrate Court with the magistrate convicting and pronouncing a seven-year jail term against the LP candidate amidst protests.

The matter was an alleged diversion of N15 million meant for the Akwuke Community in Enugu South Local Government Area into Ngene’s Law firm’s bank account and subsequent disbursement of N11 million from the funds to a contractor who constructed the community’s road.

But, addressing reporters at the Enugu Correctional Facility, where Ngene was being detained, the APC chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, condemned what he called unjust imprisonment of the LP candidate, describing it as a miscarriage of justice.

Chief Agballah accused the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu of masterminding the arrest and jail sentence of the lawmaker to pave the way for its candidate to emerge victorious in the rerun election.

He vowed that the APC would challenge the conviction of the LP candidate and would resist any attempt by the PDP to force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold another rerun in Enugu South Urban constituency without the LP candidate being present, stressing that it would amount to robbing him of the people’s mandate.

Agballah said: “We’re here in respect of Bright Ngene, the presumed winner of the 2023 House of Assembly election for Enugu South Urban 1 State Constituency.  Ngene was the LP candidate who won the election. But, today, he’s serving a seven-year jail term because he is trying to recover his mandate, which was truncated by a tribunal judgment which declared his election inconclusive.

“We’re here in solidarity with him because injustice to one is injustice to all. We’re here on the mandate of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, who is the leader of our party in Enugu State. Chief Nnaji has asked me to intervene. I have met with Ngene to find out the true position of things.

“We all know what is happening in Enugu State. There’s a plan by the ruling PDP to stop the LP candidate from getting back the mandate given to him by the people of Enugu South Urban State Constituency.

“He was the leading candidate by over 4000 votes in an election that the Court of Appeal ordered a rerun in only eight polling units. He was leading with 5200 votes while his closest rival of the PDP had about 2000 votes. The number of eligible voters in the constituencies where the rerun is to take place is 4000.

“But the PDP government in Enugu State led by Governor Peter Mbah is using every power at their disposal to crush this man and to silence him and forcibly take away his mandate. We’re here in solidarity with him. I’m not just here as the chairman of the APC in Enugu State. I’m here as a major stakeholder in the Enugu project because injustice to one is injustice to all.

“I’m here with the backing of the minister, Chief Uche Nnaji, who is solidly behind the restoration of the mandate given freely to Bright Ngene by the people of Enugu State Urban State Constituency. We will do everything within our power to ensure that Ngene is free. The controversial judgment by Magistrate D. D. Onwu is not acceptable to us.

“We will table what the magistrate has done before the National Judicial Council (NJC). We’re going to send our lawyers to go to the court to fight for his bail. We heard from his lawyer that the magistrate gave his judgment without his legal address; as it was not accepted.

“This is against the precedence of law in the country. It’s against the rules of the High Court. It’s against the rules of natural justice. We will do everything to ensure justice is done in this matter and that whoever, no matter how highly placed, has his hands in this miscarriage of justice, will be brought to justice because nobody is above the law, including judicial officers and INEC officials.

“We’re going to take this matter to President Bola Tinubu because he swore an oath to protect the rights of every Nigerian, irrespective of political party. We’re presenting this first to the zonal leadership of our party. We can’t allow Abacha to rise again in Enugu State. What is going on now is even worse than what took place under the Chimaraoke Nnamani administration.

“During the Nnamani’s era, nobody who won an election was jailed for demanding the restoration of his mandate. We’re going to make a report to the national chairman of INEC regarding this because three times, INEC had called out the people of Enugu South Urban for an election they had no intention to conduct.

“We will not accept that the election should hold behind Ngene because you cannot barb a man in his absence.”

At a press conference, the Enugu PDP denied being responsible for the travails of the LP candidate. Its chairman, Augustine Nnamani insisted that the allegations of a political witch hunt by the Enugu State Government in the trial and sentencing of Bright Ngene was a total falsehood.

The PDP explained that Ngene’s investigation, trial, and conviction were at the instance of his people for the theft of N15.7m belonging to their community and wondered how it could have related to the 2023 House of Assembly contest.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, and as the case file number (MEN/ 225C/2017) indicates, this is a matter of conspiracy and stealing filed in the Enugu South Magisterial District of the Enugu State Magistrate Court against the first defendant, Bright Ngene, and two others way back in 2017.

“Let it also be known that the Akwuke/Akwuke Uwani communities complained to the police. After a painstaking investigation, the defendants, including Bright Ngene, were indicted and arraigned before A. O. Eze on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing on August 21, 2017. The defendants pleaded not guilty to both counts and were granted bail.

“The prosecution opened their case on the next adjourned date, September 11, 2017, calling witnesses before closing their case. Rather than marshal their defence, the defendants initially made a no-case submission. However, the court dismissed it and ordered them to commence their defence.

“Next, Bright Ngene wrote to the Chief Judge of Enugu State seeking the transfer of the matter from A. O. Eze to another court to start the trial afresh; a request the Chief Judge refused for lacking in merit.

“Ngene did not relent, and the matter was later reassigned to E. D. Onwu, and the matter started afresh.  The prosecution called their witnesses, who testified afresh and were thoroughly cross-examined by the defence. Ngene (the first defendant) testified in person. He also called witnesses, who testified on his behalf before closing his case.”

The party, therefore, underscored the fact that not only was the LP House of Assembly candidate charged at the instance of his people many years predating the 2023 election but also that the delays in the trial were “mostly at the instance of Bight Ngene who kept applying to the Chief Judge for reassignment of the case and filing actions in the superior courts to stall the trial”.

Edo APC chairman criticises PDP counterpart for false accusations against police

The chairman of the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, has berated his counterpart of the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, of wrongly accusing the police, ahead of the September 21 governorship election.

Tenebe, on Sunday, July 28, in Benin, declared that it was uncharitable of Aziegbemi to accuse the police in Edo of selective justice.

He said: “For a man (Aziegbemi) that was kidnapped not too long ago, on his way from the residence of Governor Godwin Obaseki, he should realise that the criminals terrorising Edo State are enemies within them. What the police deserve from him is praise, for rescuing him from his kidnappers’ den, and not baseless castigation.

“The two cases that Aziegbemi mentioned in his statement, demanded appropriate urgent attention by the police to discourage other PDP leaders and members, who are determined to visit violence on the electorate before, during, and after the September 21, 2024 election, which the PDP has vowed to win by all means possible.

“Olu Martins openly ordered PDP-known cultists to unleash violence on members of the opposition parties in Edo State. He went further to supervise the destruction of campaign billboards of opposition parties across the state. One wonders if Aziegbemi was expecting the police to allow Martins and his irks to cause more havoc, before arresting him.

“More debasing of Aziegbemi’s position is his fault finding in the APC’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police on the murder of Inspector Onuh Akor, the security aide to distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, who was murdered in Benin City.

“Hard as Aziegbemi and his PDP would want to subvert investigation, the circumstance that led to the unfortunate incident speaks for itself. Those who murdered Inspector Akor were stationed at the airport exit gate, in a marked Sienna Bus, with an Asue-Ogie sticker.

“What Aziegbemi is short of saying is that the APC’s supporters who had come to welcome the reinstated Edo deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and the APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, decided to shoot at themselves. The incident does not demand special investigation skill to establish the fact that the killers of Inspector Akor were dispatched by PDP to stop the convoy from leaving the airport.”

Edo chairman of APC also described Aziegbemi’s “baseless complaint” as a mere excuse for the imminent defeat that awaited PDP and its candidate (Dr. Asue Ighodalo) on September 21, while advising him (Aziegbemi) to reserve his tears till September 22, when the Independent National Electoral Commission would have pronounced Okpebholo the winner of the poll.

  • Why I defected to APC, by ex-PDP lawmaker

Why I defected to APC, by ex-PDP lawmaker

A former lawmaker in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who represented Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Oghene Egoh, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Egoh left the PDP with a majority of the executive members in Amuwo Odofin, as well as his supporters.

The former lawmaker cited President Bola Tinubu’s proactive policies and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s penchant for delivering good governance as his reasons for joining the APC.

He said: “My first motivation for joining APC is the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President. My defection is happening now at this difficult time when most people believe the president is not doing well. But I have examined his policies and can confidently say they are good enough to turn the fortunes of Nigeria around for the better.

“Yes we are in difficult times, but I tell you Mr. President came in at a time the country was at a financial crossroad. The previous government mismanaged funds, growth was retarded but President Tinubu came and he is taking some bold decisions which might seem unpalatable now, but will definitely prosper Nigeria and Nigerians later.

“Some of his bold moves include revisiting the Oronsaye report, ensuring local government areas get their deserved autonomy by getting their allocations directly, providing over a trillion naira to source food for the nation, and also reducing import duties to the barest minimum.

“These bold moves show that the President cares, listens and understands that the people are suffering, and is working to ameliorate. If not for his fiscal policies, the country would have crashed. The president’s economic policies are such that I know will grow the economy, and the best is to join and strengthen him.

“Coming back to Lagos, the speaking projects of the Sanwo-Olu administration are enough to silence critics. The Blue and Red Rail Line projects would revolutionise transportation in Lagos. It is already revolutionising the way transport is done in other states and in Nigeria. Both of them have endeared me to the party.”

Egoh noted that his decision to leave PDP was informed by the quarrelsome nature of leaders who refuse to listen to voice of reasoning.

“Where is the PDP right now, so much quarrelling at the national level that the party cannot take any decision; such a party cannot move anyone anywhere. A party that is quarrelling with itself daily certainly cannot win elections.

“We did a lot to salvage the situation but it didn’t go anywhere. So many people have tried. And when you see a party that is dying and decaying, you should know. You should not wait until it totally crumbles before leaving.”

APC urges Fed Govt to put Obaseki on security watch

Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, has accused leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of resorting to campaigns of calumny and mudslinging, peddling falsehoods and mistruths.

He said this yesterday at a news conference in Benin.

He said: “The APC is reeling from the fact that it has a governorship candidate (Senator Monday Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District), who has continued to inflict the party and its handlers with the pain of making up stories to confuse Edo people and distract them from the main issue, which is selling their vision and plans to the people of the state.

“One wonders why a party that has issued over 150 statements in the last three months will have none addressing the vision of the party and its candidate, and how the candidate plans to implement the vision to better the lots of Edo people.

“The governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in Edo State, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, commits N1 billion monthly to provide food palliative for millions of residents.

“Our PDP government led the charge in the country to raise the minimum wage to N70,000, and the party’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, has promised to look at ways to further increase the amount. We want to hear from the APC and its candidate what their plan is in this regard.”

Edo State Chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe, has called on the Federal Government to put on security watch, Governor Obaseki, in view of his alleged threat to burn down Nigeria.

He also alerted the security agencies of an alleged engagement between Obaseki and a section of the civil society group, drawn from Edo State, and cultists from neighbouring states, with the sole aim of recruiting them for any protest that might be in the offing.

Tenebe yesterday alleged: “The aim of Obaseki’s plan is to create anarchy in Edo State and the five other Southsouth states and blame the APC for the destructions that will follow the protest.

“It is embarrassing and worrisome that the House of Assembly has turned blind eyes to the danger Obaseki has become, as the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, and members of Edo House of Assembly have refused to condemn the serious security breach the governor has committed. “

APC: protesters should not invade Lagos

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governance Advisory Council (GAC) member, Otunba Oladele Ajomale, yesterday chided unidentified organisers of the proposed protest.

Describing the planned action as unwarranted, he said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been resolving their complaints.

He warned against plans by the faceless agitators to destroy public facilities, reminiscent of the 2020 EndSars protest, urging parents and religious leaders to steer youths away from violence.

Also, Lagos APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, lent its voice to the appeal of well-meaning Nigerians to youths “to let peace reign in Nigeria at this critical time of our history.”

Noting that peaceful protest is an integral component of democratic governance, the party said the predictable attendant violence and loss of lives and property are undesirable.
