Ondo APC primary: Aborigines pick on three aspirants

The nine-man committee headed by Hon Christy Olufowose to evaluate and screen governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has picked three aspirants.

It was gathered that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was among the aspirants picked for support by the committee.

Some elders of the Ondo APC under the auspices of Ondo APC Aborigines had raised the committee to search for an aspirant they would support to win the party’s primary.

Leader of APC Aborigines and former Nigeria Ambassador to the Republic of Togo, Ambassador Sola Iji, said the name of the top candidate would be released next week.

Ambassador Iji said the group’s resolve to carefully pick an aspirant was to ensure the emergence of a candidate of the APC and not of strangers.

He said: “We have received a report of the nine-man committee headed by Olufowose. The report contains some recommendations which we the leaders will deliberate on and we will return to make a final decision on our preferred aspirant.

“We are interested in working for a preferred aspirant who will be a party man. The elders will look at the recommendations. What should interest the people is the candidate that will be acceptable.

“The Committee has identified the aspirants. The House has accepted the report of the Committee with some amendments. At the next meeting, we should be able to name the aspirant we are supporting.”

Ondo 2024: Ilutitun APC youths deny Aiyedatiwa’s endorsement

Ilutitun All Progressives Congress(APC) Youths have dissociated themselves from the purported endorsement of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

The youths said they have been inundated with calls and inquiries from different quarters on the endorsement of Ayedatiwa by some individuals and cohorts in Ilutitun who claimed to have spoken for APC.

A statement by the convener, ‘Concerned Ilutitun APC Youths’, Olafunmi Akinyele stated that the group was not part of those who endorsed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa a few days ago.

The statement reads: “It hurts to admit that we are sorry for this abnormality from persons whose reach is not beyond their selfish interest.

“For a fact, none of the persons who allegedly signed the press statement ought to have the temerity to speak for Ilutitun APC while we have an elected representative.

“But these are people who are fighting dangerously for relevance and political patronage despite being around for decades without any positive impact on the entire Moribodo community.

“We have been left to wonder why they have allowed their selfishness to becloud their sense of reasoning and love for the town, if they ever did. It beats the imagination of all and sundry the audacity of these conspirators in their deliberate act to have relegated the collective interest of Moribodo community to this embarrassing level due to their greed, averts and selfishness.

“Can this their misnomer ever happen in any of Ikale town? Certainly no. This bizarre behaviour of bootlickers of will not be accepted in our beloved Moribodo community.

“It is time to note that Ondo South remains the most neglected of all the districts in the State and it deserves special attention. There’s no denying the fact that for Ondo South to match up with others, it needs gubernatorial power for the maximum of eight years.

“The truncation of the Olusegun Agagu administration marked a stagnancy in various developmental projects being carried out in the South at that time. While we accept that government is a continuum, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his minions in Ilutitun Osooro should know that four years is not enough to fix the rot in the South.

“Conclusively, we will like to use this medium to warn off the said signees to the Sara Joe charade to desist from selling our rights when they’ve eaten their cakes in full. We, the youths, must develop and take care of our future that’s now upon us.

“Your generation has failed us and it will be in your best interest to take a back seat while we take our destiny in our own hands”.

Ondo 2024: Shelve your ambition, APC chieftain tells Ayedatiwa

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, Sola Olatunji has urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to shelve his plan to contest the forthcoming governorship election to prevent reduction of tenure of the southern region of the state.

Olatunji, who hails from Erekiti in Okitipupa local government posited that if Aiyedatiwa contests and wins the next election, constitutionally, he won’t fit to contest for a second term, saying such situation will prevent the zone from having its own eight years like other zones.

A statement by Olatunji maintained that there is a clear difference between four and eight years, adding that it is heartlessness and sheer wickedness for anyone to jeopardize collective interest of Ondo South people for personal aggrandizement.

He said: “That other zones (Central and North) have utilized their chances of Eight years each and it is the turn of the people of Ondo South to produce a Governor for Eight unbroken years in order to maximize our opportunity.

“Anything contrary to this will only yield protest votes from the people of Ondo South who will naturally feel marginalized.

“In the interest of the whole senatorial district and the Party, the Governor should shelve his ambition.

“That is to avoid a repeat of the Bayelsa episode in Ondo State, the Governor is requested to clear his name amidst the certificate scandal already in public domain.

“That the Governor’s show of lack of empathy for his late boss while he was sick till his burial is a clear sign of treachery. Entrusting the ship of the state in the hands of such character poses a great threat to the sanity and moral standards of our State and Party.

“That Ondo Southerners are politically savvy people who will not sacrifice their collective interest on the altar of selfishness and ego”.

Ondo APC primary: Akeredolu never endorsed any candidate, ex-aide

Prof. Dayo Faduliye, a former special adviser on health to late former governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has said that his late boss did not endorse anybody to succeed him before his death in December last year.

Faduliye, who is a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, said the late Akeredolu never mentioned his successor at all State Executive Council meetings.

He spoke when he visited the State Working Committee of the Ondo APC to intimidate them of his reasons for seeking the party’s ticket to contest for the governorship election in November this year.

The former president of the Nigeria Medical Association, however, urged those claiming they were endorsed by Akedeli to work hard.

Faduliye promised to move the state in a geometric progression if elected as governor.

He said: “I work with late Akeredolu. I can tell you authoritatively that Akeredolu has no preferred candidate. I attended all the SEC meetings and he never said anything about his preferred candidate to the cabinet members.

“Endorsement is good but you have to work for it. I am working hard and I believe that with God all things are possible. We have to work for endorsement.”

The former commissioner also promised to use technology to boost youth employment as well as engage party leaders in government activities.

In his remarks, the Ondo APC chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin advised aspirants to eschew violent acts.

He urged Faduliye to focus on youth empowerment if elected as governor.

  • Ondo APC primary: How far can Team Aketi go?

Ondo APC primary: How far can Team Aketi go?

Signs of things to come within the ranks and supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State unveiled itself during last month’s visit of President Bola Tinubu. Supporters of many governorship aspirants other than those supporting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa were attacked. Billboards and campaign posters of many aspirants that adorned the streets of Akure were pulled down and destroyed. The action of the hoodlums and thugs was not unconnected with the battle to secure the ticket of the party in the primary scheduled for next month. It was also a pointer that the Ondo APC might implode.

The APC in Ondo State has subtly zoned its governorship ticket to Ondo South senatorial district in line with the unwritten political arrangement in the state. Former Governor Olusegun Mimiko hails from Ondo Central, later former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu hails from Ondo North and the next governor is expected to hail from Ondo South. All the aspirants in the race to secure the APC governorship ticket are from the South.

They are former Finance Commissioner, Wale Akinterinwa, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, business mogul, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Chief Olusola Oke, a former NDDC Commissioner, Hon Olugbenga Edema, a former member of the House of Representatives, Mayowa Akinfolarin, a former President of the Nigeria Medical Association, Prof Dayo Faduliye, Dr. Paul Akintelure, Chief Matthew Oyerinmade, Dr. Olamide Ohinyeye, amongst others.

Governor Aiyedatiwa has declared to run for a fresh term in office after completing the tenure of late Akeredolu in February next year. He was sworn into office in December last year after the death of Akeredolu. His emergence followed months of intrigues and political imbroglio occasioned by prolonged ill-health of late Akeredolu. An intervention by President Bola Tinubu stopped impeachment move by the Ondo State House of Assembly before the uneventful death of Akeredolu.

Aiyedatiwa does not enjoy the support of the Aketi Political family otherwise known as Team Aketi. During the political imbroglio occasioned by the illness of late Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa was backed by so many forces including the Peoples Democratic Party. Others included some Abuja based Ondo APC leaders who had been on the move to take over the party structure in the state.

During the declaration of Aiyedatiwa, key leaders of Team Aketi were absent. Also absent were seven members of the House of Representatives, Senators and other political leaders from the state.

Governor Aiyedatiwa understood the opposition he faced in the Ondo APC ahead of primary when he said, “My dear people of Ondo State, the gubernatorial primary election is at hand. Your vote is a potent weapon that must be wisely used. We must reject those who seek to buy our conscience with money. We must stop those who seek to govern this State by muscles. That is not what our late legends and founding fathers who once governed this State handed unto our generation.

“Today, I offer myself to lead, not to rule, to respect your wishes, not to dominate you, and to lead by example of humility, good character and empathy, which I have demonstrated in office since 2021.”

Aiyedatiwa also reminded APC members and leaders that late Akeredolu wished him his successor.

According to him,  “I must re-echo what our late leader had always wished for in his life time. It was his wish that I succeed him, not in death though, as the next Governor of the State. He was a courageous and visionary leader who had no time for pretense and so he expressed this wish at different fora in both public and private. All was with one conviction and implicit confidence in me to carry on the torch of accelerated development.

“I dare say too with a sense of humility that our departed leader would be proud of me as a worthy constitutional successor who has not derailed on the path of development we jointly pursued.”

However, the Team Aketi is yet to break its silence since the passing of Akeredolu and the swearing-in of Aiyedatiwa.

Former spokesman of late Akeredolu, Richard Olatunde gave an insight into the thinking of Team Aketi. Olatunde, in a statement, insisted that his former boss had a strained relationship with Governor Aiyedatiwa before his death.

Olatunde said Akeredolu’s ardent followers, including members of his family, do not support Governor Aiyedatiwa’s aspiration to clinch the ticket of the party.

He said the late Governor did not anoint or express any desire for Aiyedatiwa to succeed him adding that the relationship between the late Governor and Governor Aiyedatiwa became strained and distant until his passing.

“Despite attending to official matters and meeting people from Akure, the late Governor intentionally kept Mr. Aiyedatiwa, who was the deputy governor at the time, away from him in Ibadan.

“Our late Governor was deeply disappointed and regretful of certain behaviours and character traits displayed by Mr. Aiyedatiwa during his health challenges, which ultimately led to his passing.

“One thing that discerning minds can clearly see is the turn of events in the latter half of last year. Trust was betrayed. Confidence was shattered. And the true colours of desperation overshadowed the good intentions of our late Governor. What followed was a tale of disappointment and betrayal. Our late leader, to say the least, was heartbroken before his demise.”

The Aketi Political family has proven its worth since 2016 when it defeated the ruling PDP. It repeated the feat in the 2020 governorship election and last year’s general election. However, the ill-health and death of Akeredolu death a big blow to its organisational structure even though many the structure remained intact.

It is not clear yet whose aspirant has the backing of the Aketi Political family and certainly not Governor Aiyedatiwa.

A loyalist of Akeredolu who pleaded anonymity said the Team Aketi political structure remained intact. The loyalist said the leaders were not happy but watching the turn of events.

“Whatever decision from Abuja on the choice of a candidate is what they will abide with. Aketi has his men at the unit, ward and local government level. Aketi dynasty is a strong one. For him to be a man of his words, it means a lot to everybody. His loyalists are waiting.”

A lawmaker in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon Olatunji Oshati, said there would be political realignment before and after the APC governorship primary.

Hon Oshati who is a supporter Aiyedatiwa said the silence of Akeredolu before his death led to confusion among his followers before his death.

Oshati said it was unfortunate that Akeredolu was not around to state his own side when allegations were raised against Aiyedatiwa.

He said, “There had been misperception about those claiming to be Aketi Team. We are all Aketi Family. Most of us holds allegiance to the former Governor. It is unfortunate at the time of infighting within us the children, Oga was not around to tell his side of story to the children. Those were part of intrigues we are talking about. The oga we know we tell you off if you offend him. He was not around to say the truth.

“We had the doubt of the truth about allegations against Aiyedatiwa. We all heard when Akeredolu confessed that he believed and wanted his Deputy to succeed him. Any other endorsement was not clear to anybody.”

As the Ondo APC approaches, will Team Aketi gets its pounds of flesh? Can it install its desired aspirant as candidate of the party? Can it get back its supporters already with Aiyedatiwa? The coming weeks will tell.
