APC in Diaspora urges Tinubu to intervene in UK chapter crisis

The Committee of Diaspora Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (CDC-APC) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the brewing crisis over the conduct of election into the United Kingdom Chapter.

The call is contained in a statement jointly signed by Prof. Adesegun Labinjo and Mr Bola Babarinde, the Chairman and General Secretary of the Committee respectively, on Monday.

According to the statement, the speedy intervention of the president is needed following alleged compromise in the conduct of elections into the UK Diaspora Chapter.

The statement said if the situation is not checked, it might lead to unintended and unfavourable outcomes for the diaspora chapter and the party.

” With the imminent catastrophe, the lasting solutions which we all yarning for may elude the chapter and other chapters in Diaspora,” it said.

The statement said that the frosty relationship between CDC-APC and APC headquarters should stop, adding that the diaspora chapters were not in competition with the leadership of the party.

“We want to support and complement the party, and to leverage on the strength and spread of our supporters abroad, which is to be marshalled for the benefit of our party and country back at home.

“The current divide and rule being championed and deployed by our party Secretariat should be checked by our able and diligent party Chairman.

“Some elements that are power drunk and arrogant do not care about the well-being of our party, but only concern about their own ego and using their offices to cause rancour amongst the Diaspora Chapters and between the chapters and the secretariat”, it said.

The statement also said that it was worrisome that some elements within the party were selling forms to factions of the party in UK without the approval of the interim executives.

“What exactly are these people afraid of in conducting free and fair elections in UK and by extension other Diaspora chapters?

“APC Diaspora chapters are ready to support peaceful and transparent conduct of elections in UK to avoid continuous animosity between the two main factions in APC UK.

“The Diaspora chapters are looking up to APC headquarters in Abuja to play a responsible fatherly role in making sure all stakeholders in APC UK are carried along and giving a sense of belonging”, it said.

APC Forum tasks North Central govs on support for Tinubu

In the wake of the prevalent economic hardship in the country, governors from the north central zone have been called upon to rally strategic support for President Bola Tinubu to enable him pilot the affairs of the nation successfully into a better epoch.

The call was made on Thursday, March 15, by the north central forum of the APC in Jos, Plateau State, at the declaration of one week of prayer for the nation beginning from next Monday, March 18, 2024.

Speaking with reporters, the APC Forum Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Mandung Zazzaga, said the nation is going through difficult time now and it requires God’s intervention, upon which prayers is necessary.

The Chairman said since the current hardship in the nation deepened owing to the fuel subsidy removal, the masses have been going through untold suffering, thereby causing lot of disquiet across the nation.

According to him, after a careful study of the situation, they have decided to intercede for the nation and rally strategic support for President Tinubu, seeing that he is sincerely committed to bettering the lives of Nigerians.

Zazzaga who was also a member of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in the last election said the last administration of President Muhammadu Buhari caused a lot of havoc to the system, and Tinubu is trying to rectify the problems thus leading to some painful situation which is nothing but a passing phase.

He said it may not be easy for the masses to bear this or understand the situation, and so the governors would have to come in strategically to assist the president and to stimulate understanding among the people towards the President’s policies.

And in this respect, he said, the north central governors, which is the primary jurisdiction of the forum and also due to the region’s peculiarities, should have a common ground and engineer effective support for the president.

“This is a critical moment in the life of our nation and we call on the governors to develop strategies to advance the cause of president Bola Tinubu.

“At state level, the governors can make efforts to meet up with the yearnings and aspirations of the people, so that the pressure on the federal government can be reduced.

“For instance, the Plateau State government has intervened seriously in the area of transportation through the revival of the railway system and provision of 14 Metro Buses to address transportation challenges in Jos, among other things. Governors can intervene in several critical sectors in their state to alleviate the people’s suffering.

“We call on the governors of the north central region to take this very seriously because of the peculiar situation the region is facing in terms of development deficit, security challenges, among others, despite its rich human and mineral resource endowment.

“Moreover, the governors can galvanize the people’s support for the President’s policies and look for skillful ways to pacify them and urge them to support the government as he paddles the nation through the storm into prosperity,” he said.

APC, PDP clash again over 2024 budget

    • You lack moral right to demand Akpabio’s resignation – Ruling party
    • PDP demands review of Appropriation Act by Presidency
    • Nasarawa APC chief vows to resist plot to remove Senate President

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that its ‘sordid legacy of monumental corruption’ made it inappropriate for the opposition party to demand the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and turn himself to anti-graft agencies for investigation.

The PDP had, on Wednesday, asked Akpabio to step aside on the strength of the allegation by Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi  that the 2024 budget was padded by the Senate.

However, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a reaction yesterday, took a swipe at PDP, describing it as a “meddlesome interloper”.

The APC also said the PDP has continued to show itself as an entity bereft of focus and purpose, which is “quick to feast on sham without thought and consideration for facts and institutional due process.”

“It is rather ridiculous that the PDP that is unable to govern itself would seek to dictate to the Senate how it should conduct its proceedings and handle internal matters of discipline of its members,” Morka said.

On the allegations that the suspension of Senator Ningi was a cover-up, without first referring the matter to a Senate standing committee, the APC said: “How is a committee of the full Senate conducting an inquiry in the matter, in full public view on national television, less independent and transparent or in violation of the Senate’s standing rules or any other laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?

“Contrary to the PDP’s twisted argument, the Senate neither violated its standing rules and orders nor the Constitution by not referring the matter to a relevant committee. Rather, placing the matter before the committee of the whole, under public scrutiny, underscored the premium the Senate placed on transparency in the conduct of its proceedings. It was clear for all to see that the author of the allegation was unable to offer any substantiation or justification.

“It is eerily comical that the PDP, a party with a sordid legacy of monumental corruption would suggest that the President of the Senate should turn himself to anti-graft agencies for investigation.

“This is the entity that turned graft and corruption into statecraft, the same entity that cannot account for funds raised for the building of its national headquarters, making such a ridiculous call. The PDP should lead by example and heed its call.”

It said: “The legislative authority of the Senate includes the authority to make its own rules and adopt its procedures for discharging its constitutional mandate. That extends to modifying its rules and standing orders by its rules and procedures, and observance of all applicable legal and constitutional standards. It also has the authority to discipline its members by its institutional and constitutional due process.”

Exonerating the Senate President of any complexity that would warrant his stepping down, the governing party maintained that “the President of the Senate has done nothing wrong to warrant him stepping aside on account of this or any other disclosed matter.

“The PDP should quit being a meddlesome interloper, expend its lean energy on revamping its decrepit institution, and leave the Senate to carry on its important role of deepening our democracy and stabilising our dear nation.”

Presidency should review 2024 budget; Akpabio must go, PDP insists

But the PDP insisted yesterday that Akpabio must quit while the Presidency must review the 2024 budget.

The PDP, in a statement entitled “N3.7t, You Can’t Suppress Investigation, PDP Replies Senate Leadership” spoke of the need to “restore the integrity of the 2024 budget” by President Tinubu.

In the statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP said:

“The Akpabio-led APC leadership in the Senate ought to know that no amount of threats, harassment, suspension of whistleblowers and attempts to blackmail the opposition through diversionary press statements and sponsored articles in a section of the media can suppress the demand for an open investigation into the alleged budget padding which is already in the public domain.

“The PDP and Nigerians are however not deterred by attacks by the APC leadership in the Senate which is a clear case of corruption fighting back in the face of public scrutiny.

“More importantly, the failure by the Akpabio-led APC leadership to allow for investigation into the budget padding allegation constitutes a huge smear on the image of the Senate and destroys its rectitude and integrity to perform its Constitutional duty to investigate and oversight other public institutions; a situation that spells doom to our Constitutional democracy if not immediately checked.

“If Senator Akpabio has nothing to fear, he should immediately recall Senator Abdul Ningi and allow for an open and detailed investigation into the allegation of discrete insertion of N3.7 trillion into the 2024 budget.

“Our Party, standing shoulder to shoulder with Nigerians, insists that Senator Akpabio should step aside and allow for a credible investigation, as he cannot be a judge in this matter,” the party stated.

The PDP further stressed its demand that Senator Godswill Akpabio must not only step aside but also undergo a special probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“Furthermore, the PDP stands by its demand that Senator Akpabio should report at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation into the alleged looting of N108 billion belonging to the people of Akwa Ibom State and the N86 billion alleged contract scam under his watch as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs respectively,” the PDP added.

Nasarawa APC boss, Bello, vows to resist plot to impeach Akpabio

The Chairman of the APC in Nasarawa State chapter, Hon. Aliyu Bello, vowed to resist any plot to impeach Akpabio, stressing that those attempting to derail his (Akpabio’s) tenure would fail.

Bello told reporters in Abuja that the allegations against Akpabio lack substance.

“The North produced the Senate President in the past eight years under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. If there was anything a Northerner could have done as Senate President, that period provided a golden opportunity,” Bello said.

“What these lawmakers are interested in is only the raw power which they continuously use to their personal advantage.

“They will not get what they want. Senator Akpabio has been doing his best to support President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration. We won’t allow fifth columnists to derail him.”

Bello said recent happenings on the floor of the Senate, which led to the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) were  the antics of senators habouring a misguided sense of entitlement, who feel they must either control the senate or they sink it.

Insecurity: APC state chairmen tell Tinubu to wield the big stick

Forum of state chairmen of All Progressives Congress (APC) have advised President Bola Tinubu to “wield the big stick” in the fight against insecurity, including penalizing security officials not living up to their task.

The APC state chairmen disclosed snippets of their conversations with President Tinubu while speaking to journalists at the State House, after a meeting with the president.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues after the meeting, Secretary of the Forum and Chairman of the party in Cross River State, Alphonsus Eba, also disclosed that the disagreements trailing the party’s governorship primary in Edo state, which he described as a storm in a tea cup, is being resolved at the party leadership level.

While responding to a question on government’s performance assessment, Eba cautioned against premature judgment, noting that it’s too early to evaluate the administration’s effectiveness within nine months despite the party’s previous tenure in power over eight years ago

The chairmen commended the administration’s economic policies and assure Nigerians of meaningful reforms.

Eba, who was fielding questions on the spate of kidnapping of children especially in Kaduna State, said “on the question of the kidnap of pupils in Kaduna State, yes it forms one of the issues about the general insecurity in the country that we raised as a matter of concern to Mr. President.

“We said we are more concerned because from our vintage position, it is very clear there are a lot of distractions going on in this country. There are activities of criminals that are being perpetrated to put the government and our party in bad light.

“We have commended Mr. President for the support, moral and financial that he has given to security agencies. But we came with one humble advice that we gave to Mr. President today as Forum of chairman to say that nobody expects Mr. President as Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to carry arms and go to the battlefield.

“That is why he has his lieutenants, as security agencies in various areas and what we have told Mr. President today, by way of advice, that it is time for people to be held accountable for the actions. Where a district Police Officer or a Commissioner of Police or whoever that is in control of whatever security architect at whatever level is found wanting, Mr. President should wield the big stick. That was part of what we discussed today.”

Asked whether the issue of the crisis in Edo State was discussed, Eba, who is the APC Chairman in Cross River State, said, “Edo State issue came up yesterday (Thursday) in our meeting. We discussed it extensively. We had reached some conclusions, but it was not one of the issues we discussed with Mr. President today because there are still internal party affairs that we are rising up from here now to continue a meeting with the national Chairman of our party and the NWC.

“Issues around Edo that you are you aware that are already in the public glare are just but a storm in a tea cup and will be resolved at that level of the party leadership. So we did not discuss that with Mr. President.”

The Forum of APC Chairmen which had 33 members out of 37 present at the meeting with the President, said members were on a solidarity visit to the Nigerian leader and to discuss issues of national importance.

They further submitted that they also proffered some strategies of tackling the myriad of challenges bedevilling the country.

APC, PDP bicker over alleged attack threats on school, farmland

All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State have bickered over the alarm raised by Governor Ademola Adeleke about possible attack on schools and farmland in the state.

The Chairman of APC in Osun State, Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement yesterday, said the alarm raised by Governor Adeleke is fake and a diversionary attempt from the alleged N100billion infrastructure procurement fraud.

He said: “It was unfortunate that a whole state governor with a full complement of paraphernalia of security could be sending a phoney signal on insecurity in his territory. We are not politically inexperienced not to have an understanding that the Adeleke-invented security threat against the state is a ploy to shift their attention from discussing his ill-thought out N100billion white elephant projects, when hunger is walking on four legs in all the streets in the nooks and crannies of the state.”

PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, however, berated APC and defended Osun State Government, saying security agencies were aware of security threats alarm raised by Governor Adeleke.

He said: “We find it reprehensible and condemnable for the state APC to deny reports that have been confirmed by virtually all the security agencies in the state. Must APC play politics with everything? A patriotic governor raised the alarm on security threats and he summoned the state Security Council meeting.

“The PDP government is too well focused on delivering on its infra and social programmes designed to restore the state from the depth of under-development the state was plunged into for 12 years. We are proud as a party to restate that our government is in full compliance with the procurement laws and other extant provisions in the implementation of its infra projects.”

Edo 2024: Jostle for APC running mate begins

As the race for the governorship election in Edo State begins, jostling for the selection of a running mate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate has become intense.

APC elected Senator Monday Okpebholo, the lawmaker representing Edo Central Senatorial District, as its governorship candidate on February 23.

However, following the settlement of the governorship primary in favour of Okpebholo, some senior members of the party, who are interested in becoming running mate to the candidate, have started showing interest. Most notable among them is former member of the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, fondly called EJ.

A diaspora group, N’Edo Ghama Diaspora Group, USA, is of the opinion that EJ has the legislative and executive experience, having worked as a Special Adviser under the administration of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Besides, the group believes EJ’s connection with some past American presidents will be an added advantage to the state if he emerges as the deputy governor.

In a statement on Sunday, N’Edo Ghama Diaspora Group, USA, said: “When considering and shopping for a running mate in any election as regards the office of the deputy governor of a state, there are a number of factors to be considered in the choice of person who will fit into that office, and by extension, one who can complement his/her boss. There is need to settle for one who has wealth of experience and huge electoral value.

“Getting a good candidate to fly the party’s flag in an election that will be keenly contested is not enough to guarantee the party’s victory at the polls without a running mate whose electoral value cuts across all spheres of the society.

  • Onjeh urges NASS not to politicise Benue security issues

Onjeh urges NASS not to politicise Benue security issues

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Daniel Onjeh has appealed to the National Assembly not to politicise the security challenges in Benue State.

He said remarks on the chambers of the National Assembly that Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia’s silence on the killing of over 50 persons in some communities by armed invaders could mean he is non-challant as troubling.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio while reacting to the motion by Senator Emmanuel Udende (Benue North) said:  “I believe the Governor of Benue State, whose primary responsibility is to use security vote to ensure the security of life and property in the State, is also listening”.

In a statement at the weekend, Onjeh said the National Assembly should not allowed itself to be dragged into Benue politics by caucus headed by the Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

Onjeh alleged the caucus’s sole agenda has been to stir up confusion in Benue and disparage Alia in what he described as a sinister and selfish attempt to distract the Governor from delivering good governance and other dividends of democracy to the citizens of the state.

While commending the initiative of the Senate to seek audience with the President and Commander-in-Chief over the general state of insecurity across the country, Onjeh urged the members of the National Assembly to refrain from politicising insecurity.

”We can take a cue from Israel, whose citizens were more divided before its ongoing war on Gaza, than they had ever been in the country’s history. But the current Prime Minister had to make worthy compromises, including extending the olive branch to the opposition. The result is that the Israelites are currently united in their quest to defeat the terrorist group, Hamas,” the former Benue South senatorial candidate stated.

Regarding the Benue Governor not addressing the media shortly after the attacks on some communities of the State last week, Onjeh stated all the public outcries and press statements condemning the killings across Benue State have not translated to any perceivable improvement in the security of the State.

“Therefore, the senate cannot bemoan Fr. Alia on account of him not rushing to the press to condemn the recent killings or to blame it on any ethnic group.

“After all, one of their colleagues, Sen. Adamu Aliero, while laying the blame for the unending insecurity across the country squarely on poor oversight by the relevant senate committees, also stated at the plenary session that he was tired of coming to mourn the loss of innocent lives due to attacks by criminals.

“Therefore, it is high time we stopped seeking public attention or sympathy over insecurity, so we can really get down to the task of fixing our nation’s security architecture,” the former National President of the National Association of Nigerian Stidents (NANS) said.

The Senate, Onjeh advised, should have sought to meet with Governor Alia or invited him to discuss the situation in Benue State instead of making incendiary remarks without giving the Governor a fair hearing.

According to Onjeh, contrary to the impression being created by the Senate, the public, especially Benue citizens, should bear in mind that Governor Alia is not resting on his oars regarding addressing insecurity in the State but giving a much deeper look and thought to the new dimension of the security situation in Benue.

“Rev. Fr. Alia is not trying to stereotype any particular ethnic group as responsible for the incessant armed attacks in Benue State communities, because to him, bandits are bandits, whether marauding herdsmen or local bandits, and he wants the law to deal with them in the same manner, so that nobody can hide under the guise of herdsmen to continue unleashing mayhem in the state. In fact, the speed with which Sen. Udende brought the matter up before the senate, raises several questions.

“What they probably want to do is to push Fr. Alia to rush to the media and blame the most recent attack on Logo and Katsina Ala on herdsmen, so that it will divert attention from the real perpetrators, and in the end, these conflict entrepreneurs and merchants of death will continue unabated as they are diverting the attention of the public to other likely causes of the insecurity. In the process, they will be pitching the state and the governor against a particular tribe or ethnic group. Benue State is not at war with the Fulanis.

“There is just an anti-grazing law being enforced in the state. So, no individual or cabal can push Fr. Alia into pitching himself against a particular ethnic group, in the name of condemning insecurity in the state,” Onjeh stated.

The former Chairman, Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, stressed that the members of the Benue National Assembly Caucus had openly declared their animus against Alia, and launched their first attack on him via a Motion moved by Sen. Abba Moro, seeking to withhold the statutory allocations to Benue Local Government Areas.

Onjeh stated in Moro’s desperate bid to disparage Fr. Alia, he tasked the senate to arrogate to itself, powers which it lacked constitutionally, a step that could have dragged the entire senate into disrepute.

Both chambers of the National Assembly, Onjeh advised, should scrutinise all Bills and Motions coming from Benue legislators before they are put through the legislative mill.
