Jimoh, frontrunner in Ondo APC, forges ahead

    • By Adegoke Foluso

His campaign train is electrifying. On board are core party loyalists, trusted followers, youths, women and men of goodwill dedicated to the continuation of good governance in post-Akeredolu era.

There is a debate going on in Ondo State. The question is who can lead the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to victory during the November governorship election?

As his campaign train rolled into Ondo Central, eminent businessman and senator representing Ondo South, Jimoh Ibrahim, reassured the people that Ondo State will be safe in his hands, if elected as governor. “I am here with a message of hope, that our beloved state, with its abundant potential, will witness growth and development across sectors through prudent management,” he said in Ondo, the second largest town in the Central District.

To many party chieftains, Ibrahim is a promising candidate embodying essential qualities for visionary leadership. “His capability is underscored by an impressive academic background, diverse business ventures, and impactful infrastructure investments. Trustworthiness is evident in his successful business dealings and commitment to governmental responsibilities,” said Prince Segun Oluyede, a member of the campaign group,’ Aseyori Leekansi.’ Oluyede added: “compassion shines through his genuine concern for the downtrodden, demonstrated in philanthropic initiatives, legislative efforts, and transformative projects.”

Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) blew the wristle, Ibrahim has hit the ground running. He has intensified consultations and mobilisation, visiting the 18 local government areas. The aapirant is now on tour of the 203 wards. Since charity begins from home, he kicked off from his native Ondo South, his base. The general feeling in the party is that the governorship ticket would be zoned to the South in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice.

In those wards he visited, he was taken seriously as an experienced politician and competent administrator, who will not disappoint the people. While traversing Ondo Central, he gave assurances after collating the infrastructural challenges confronting the towns and villages. As a household name, he needed no intriduction. He was at home with the rich and the poor, who assured him of support.

Next week, Ibrahim is expected to tour Ondo North. But, he had even stormed the district during the week on a sort of rescue mission when he held reconciliation meeting with aggrieved party leaders in Akoko axis so that they would be on the same page ahead of the by-election in Akoko North/East Federal Constituency.  Thousands of supporters came out in  the South and Central to receive him and partake from the palliatives given out by his campaign team. As he doled out the palliatives,he promised to do more. The party faithful cheered and hailed him.

The primary is scheduled for April, two months from now. No fewer than 10 aspirants have dicated interest..  Majority are from the South. Is it not too early for Ibrahim to visit the local chapters of the party? He said it is not too early, adding that the people, particularly the grassroots, who are core electors, need to know the candidates.  The senator said he would not mind doing it again because of the high regard he has for the generality of the the people. Is he not worried that his opponents may later do this towards the primary and thus rubbish all that he would have done? He says he would always be ahead of his opponents.

He described himself as the most experienced contender with a pedigree that cannot be matched by other aspirants. What exactly is propelling him , having sought the exalted office twice, in 2003 and 2016 ?Ibrahim  says  the development of Ondo State is his major priority. He pointed out that the Sunshine State is blessed with human and natural resources, stressing that it should one of the leading states in the country.  “l want to harness the rich endowments of the state to transform it and make it self- sustaining. He says he wants to turn it into an investment haven.

Ibrahim is reaching out directly to APC members and selling himself as one who can turn the fortunes of the state around.

In 2003, at 37, Ibrahim was on the firing line as governorship candidate on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). At that time, none of his rivals today were in the picture. His second attempt came in 2016 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ibrahim’s leadership capability stems from his intellectual prowess. At 57, he holds nine degrees from highly reputable institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife (LLB, MPA), the University of Oxford, and Harvard (LLM/IT). He holds a Ph.D. in Business from Cambridge University (DBA).

His academic achievements are complemented by his feats in the world of business. The scope encompasses banking, insurance, oil and gas, real estate, hospitality, and aviation, showcased by ventures like Global Fleet Group and NICON Luxury Hotel.

He demonstrated reliability by assisting the Nigerian government in recovering unpaid withholding tax from major international oil firms, successfully implementing the plan and recovering billions of dollars.

Ibrahim has shown compassion for the downtrodden by sustaining and motivating community members through philanthropic endeavors. He is the toast of his constituents, who he has often assisted financially. Recently, he distributed N300,000 to 130 constituents. The financial relief provided a significant boost in a challenging economic environment.

He has not also neglected the people with disabilities. The senator pledged to distribute one hundred wheelchairs and a minimum of a N100,000 to 200 physically challenged individuals in Ondo South.

He also intends to duplicate the empowerment initiatives in the Ondo North and Central.

He has much to show as a federal legislator who has not gone to Abuja to merely warm his legislative seat.

Ibrahim, in his eight months in the Senate, has displayed commitment to his constituency, state and country.

He sponsored bills for new educational institutions, proposed amendments, and the establishment of the Bitumen Development Commission.

The Senator initiated some laudable projects, including the rehabilitation of Igbotako road (25.9 Km, general maintenance), an asphalt overlay and maintenance of 500 meters in Igbotako; and road construction and asphalt overlay of Odogun (36 meters in length and 7.5 meters in width).

He has also installed 410 solar lights in Ilutitun, Igbotako, Iju-Oke, Iju-Odo, Oloto Igodan-Lisa, Okitipupa, Erekiti-Luwoye, Araromi-Obu, Abusoro, and Agbetu.

Ibrahim also believes in empowering party faithful.

Last month, no fewer than 660 grassrootsparty leaders received financial assistance. Over 7,511 individuals, including 27 APC ward executives, and 10 leaders per ward across the 203 wards in Ondo State, also received financial assistance.

The third phase targets the empowerment of 600,000 individuals; 200,000 beneficiaries per senatorial district.

Ibrahim has also enlisted 3,933 unit managers and 203 ward supervisors for extensive outreach. The goal is to mobilise one million voters, thereby building stronger support for the APC in 2024 and 2027 elections.

Represented by Olusegun Odidi, spokesman for the MMG, Oyerinmade said he would extend the palliative measures to widows, traders, students, and artisans across the state.

He said stipends would be given to widows and traders to support their businesses while scholarships would be provided for students.

He noted: “We are not doing this for any political gain. We are doing this to help the government of the day ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

“We want the people to be happy. The MMG has become a movement across the state. Mato has always connected with the people. This is our way of showing love to the people.”

APC will win 2027 presidential election, says Reps deputy speaker

Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win the 2027 presidential election, saying several Nigerians were already on their way to joining the party.

Kalu also spoke of the need for unity among stakeholders of the party in Abia state, saying it was the only panacea towards winning future elections.

Speaking at a meeting with the members of the Abia state APC stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, Kalu called for forgiveness and reconciliation amongst the aggrieved members of the party

He said: “I can assure you APC will win again in 2027. We have to start now to put our party in order. Whoever is offended, please forgive, and let us move the political party forward. There is a tsunami coming. They are talking to us. Your attitude toward these people coming is very important. Please, be more welcoming. Political party is about numbers”.

He said they must work together in the interest of the party, the state and the nation at large.

He said: “In us lies the capacity to reconcile for unity and peace. The expectation of those who are angry is that we reach out to them in all humility. Some will be easy, some will be difficult but that they are difficult doesn’t make them evil people. It means that we have to go the extra mile to win them back.

“As you go home ask yourself, who among us is missing? Our responsibility is to go and look for that one soul, identify the one soul, identify the problem and then set an agenda on how to achieve it. In that agenda, we put a timeline.

“There’s nothing more important to this party now than unity, unity and unity. The only way people will feel united is when we give them a sense of belonging honour them and make them understand they have value to bring to the party.

“So, if I do my part and you do your part, there’s still the missing link, our job is not complete. Our job will be complete when we move as a formidable block, as a formidable force to build our party. So, everyone is important.

“When we say political party, it’s not an ice cream party, it’s the aggregation of like-minds who come together with the purpose of building one another, our community, and our nation in line with common policies.

“It’s high time we started looking at quality, capacity, integrity, transparency, accountability not gender or brother, etc. The most important thing is that at the end of the day, the constituents will enjoy good governance.

“We should start early, so we don’t get it wrong. It’s time to identify those who can play roles now and give them assignments. The role of the political parties is not just for campaigns, it’s to influence policies. Both at the federal and state level.

“We have not come to realize that we can come as a team and lobby for a particular policy that we want Abia to benefit from. We only wait for the election, and you end up wasting four years when we can come as a formidable team and lobby the presidency, even the governor, though he’s not from our party.”

Kalu suggested that all suspended stakeholders of the party in the State be recalled immediately in the spirit of peace, unity, and reconciliation.

He said: “Today we should raise a resolution as the stakeholders of this party to recall everyone suspended. We don’t want to know the reason for such suspension. We want all hands to be on deck. We should be proud of the value we are going to bring as individuals and also recognize the value the other person is bringing.

“People like Senator Orji Kalu is a leader. Chief Ikechi Emenike is a leader. Hon. Nkiru is a leader in her office. Please, don’t tell me to come and fight Nkiru. Chief Nwamkpa is a leader. Let’s bring the system that will bring everybody together. There’s no faction at this party.

“We must be careful in the steps we want to take and analyze it without sentiments so that when we say we are going any direction, it will be a sustainable direction. I encourage you to please assign to yourselves a responsibility that will channeled towards unifying the party. It will take sacrifice out of you and I’m encouraging you to make that sacrifice.”

Assuring them that APC will still win the 2027 Presidential election, the Deputy Speaker further revealed that many people have indicated interest in joining the party.

He urged the stakeholders to be hospitable to them.

“We must work hard in our intention to have a regional integration policy. Economic integration has a root in the regional integration policy.

Earlier in his remarks, the chairman, of Abia state APC stakeholders’ forum, Senator Chris Adighije said that the issue of peace and unity was paramount and uppermost in the mind of the Deputy Speaker.

He said: “I want to say quite frankly that from my private discussions with the Rt. Hon deputy speaker, all that he has been speaking to us is about the unity of the party. In all my discussions with him privately and publicly, it has been how we will unite and win future elections. I want to appeal to my party members that all we want to do is to strategize and win elections.”

APC rakes in N600m as 12 pick Edo Gov forms

At the end of Monday deadline, the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) raked in N600m from sales of expression of interest and nomination forms for the Edo governorship ticket.

The proceed was from 12 aspirants who picked the N50 million forms ahead of the February 17 party primaries.

Checks from the Directorate of Organisation of the party at Muhammadu Buhari House in Abuja showed that no female aspirant picked the form, making it an all-male contest.

Top on the list is the former Minister of State, National Economic Planning, Prince Clem Agba; Senator Monday Okpebholo, who represents Edo Central; former Deputy Governor, Hon. The APC National Working Committee (NWC) after consultation with critical stakeholders from the State settled for a direct mode of shadow election.

It also resolved not to zone the ticket but make it open to aspirants from the three Senatorial zones.

Twenty -nine aspirants had shown interest in picking the party’s ticket for the Government House on Dennis Osadebe Avenue, Benin.

But Prof. Julius Ihonvbere’s screening committee set up by the stakeholders later trimmed the number of aspirants from 29 to six and finally four.

The decision of the Ihonvbere committee was however jettisoned by the aspirants.

APC NWC also frowned at the decision to trim the number of aspirants as the Deputy National Organising Secretary, Hon. Nze Chidi Duru l said the party’s highest administrative organ remains the only organ saddle with the responsibility to vet and clear aspirants for the February 17 primary.

APC National Chair: Yayaha Bello posters flood Abuja

The posters of immediate past Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello have flooded Abuja, barely 48 hours after he left office.

The posters show that he is vying for the position of the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a position currently occupied by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The current national chairman was elected at the August 3, 2023 National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC to replace Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who resigned from office.

Bello’s posters were seen on major streets in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), especially around the Federal Secretariat and on walls and fences of structures around the APC national secretariat on Blantyre Street at Wuse 2 in Abuja.

Edo poll: APC to update membership register

As the sale of All Progressives Congress (APC) expression of interest and nomination forms for the Edo State governorship election ends today (Monday), the party is to conduct an update of its membership register in the state ahead of the February 17 primary election.

Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, made this known at the weekend when a group of friends of Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe picked the expression of interest and nomination forms for the retired permanent secretary.

The update of the membership register became necessary following disagreement of figures by the political tendencies in the state during the last meeting the National Working Committee (NWC) had with stakeholders of the party in the state.

A committee is to be dispatched from the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to update the membership register in the 192 wards across the state.

Duru said: “A committee from the national headquarters will be on their way to Edo State next week to begin the update of the membership register.

“As you know, there were discontent tones. We will write a letter in that respect to the state chapter of the party. We can only be seen to be impartial and we cannot come to a meeting of stakeholders to misrepresent the total membership of our party in Edo State.

“That Edo is only 241,000 in numbers when we know that the membership of even Ebonyi State is almost close to a million and Edo is bigger than Ebonyi State. Even against our protestation that we have a bigger and more authentic register.

“So that is the responsibility of the NWC and we discharge that.”

Assuring all the aspirants of the resolve of the NWC to conduct a free, fair and transparent primary, the Deputy National Organising Secretary denied insinuation that the NWC had ceded the power of screening and clearing aspirants for the shadow election to a committee.

Duru said: “The National Chairman has also asked me to inform all the aspirants that the responsibility of vetting and clearing all the aspirants domicile with the NWC of our party and the National Working Committee has not abandoned that responsibility or have they given that authority to any other sub-national.

“Therefore, the exercise of vetting and clearing will only happen in the first instance through a committee that will be set up and we are in the process of setting up the committee.

“We will ensure and guarantee free, fair and transparent primary. What we want is the person who will win for us. That will win the primary and win the election ultimately for the party.

“We want Edo State in the basket of APC states and that is very important. We cannot just have one voice in the South-South, which Cross River currently represents. Once we can have Edo State in the basket, hopefully, we can also translate into another state in Ondo.

Also, checks in the party’s Directorate of Organisation at the close of work on Friday showed that only 12 of the 29 aspirants who initially declared intention to contest for the party’s tickets have purchased the N50 million expression of interest and nomination forms.”

The party so far has equally raked in N600 million from sale of forms to the 12 aspirants.
