APC leader purchases WAEC, UTME forms for 600 Osun students

No fewer than 600 students of the Ejigbo local government area of Osun State have benefited from the free West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration forms.

The forms were purchased by one of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayodele Asalu for the students to further promote education in the state.

The APC chieftain, while addressing the beneficiaries, noted that the government at all levels cannot be left alone in providing everything requirements needed for societal growth.

He explained that 350 students were given free WAEC and 250 others got free UTME forms in 20 schools across Ejigbo local government areas.

He said: “I believe very strongly in citizen participation to achieve development. Government at all levels, cannot be left alone to do all that our society requires to grow, and thus, individuals like myself, who are privileged, must make important personal contributions to the development of people and communities.

“It is important I mention that the current challenges in our dear country also demand that we all rise, join hands, and support the government to drive pro-people policies that will ultimately lead to the development of our country.”

Asalu urged Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that the administration led by President Bola Tinubu is initiating various reforms aimed at revitalizing the nation for substantial progress and development.

However, he acknowledged that these efforts are accompanied by unavoidable hardships, essential for genuine national growth and the establishment of equal opportunities for all.

  • ‘Gov aspirants on APC’s platform in Edo yet to be screened, disqualified’

‘Gov aspirants on APC’s platform in Edo yet to be screened, disqualified’

The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Peter Uwadia-Igbinigie, a lawyer, has disclosed that governorship aspirants on APC’s platform in Edo are yet to either been screened or disqualified from the crucial race involving 29 aspirants on the party’s platform.

Uwadia-Igbinigie, during a news conference at Edo state secretariat of APC on Airport Road, Benin, noted that the six-member committee, headed by the representative of Owan constituency of Edo in the House of Representatives, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, was an advisory one, not a screening committee, as being insinuated in some quarters.

The committee was set up last Monday to look into ways of pruning the governorship aspirants from 29 to a manageable number, in view of the direct primary election that was approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC.

It was rumoured that after members of the Ihonvbere-led committee rounded off their sittings, that the number of governorship aspirants had been reduced to ten, then six, and finally four, thereby creating tension among the aspirants and their teeming supporters in the 18 local government areas of Edo.

Edo publicity secretary of APC said: “Prof. Ihonvbere’s committee was an advisory one, and not a screening committee. The committee’s members met with the governorship aspirants, in order to see how the number could be pruned down, so that the party’s February 17, 2024 primary election would be free of rancour, thereby being peaceful and hitch-free.

“There is no truth in the news doing the rounds that Edo governorship aspirants on APC’s platform have been screened, and about 25 of the 29 top politicians that indicated interest have been disqualified. Based on the advice of the party, we set up a committee led by Prof. Ihonvbere, to interface with the aspirants on the need to reduce the number of aspirants to a manageable one. It is after the close of the sale of forms that the NWC will set up a screening committee.

“The committee’s members advised the Edo APC members to be in a talking relationship with the governorship aspirants, so that those who know that they cannot go all the way, can exit the race. No governorship aspirant has been screened or disqualified.”

Uwadia-Igbinigie also reiterated that the N10 million expressions of interest and N40 million nomination forms were still available for sale, while expressing optimism that more governorship aspirants were expected to still join the race to produce Governor Godwin Obaseki’s successor on November 12 this year.

He pointed out that many of the governorship aspirants on APC’s platform in Edo had seen reasons they should not purchase the forms, while others were still eager to test their popularity at the primaries.

Edo publicity secretary of APC revealed that the politicians who would lose at the party’s governorship primary election had promised to stay and work for the party in the election fixed for September 21, 2024 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

  • 13 aspirants in race for Edo APC ticket

13 aspirants in race for Edo APC ticket

One striking thing about the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, scheduled to be held on February 17, is that aspirants from the three senatorial zones are free to contest because zoning would not decide who gets the party’s ticket. Southsouth Bureau Chief BISI OLANIYI gives an overview of the aspirants eyeing the APC ticket

Ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has released the guidelines for choosing the party’s flag bearer for the election. For instance, after consultations with stakeholders, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday decided to adopt the direct mode of primary. It had earlier indicated that there would be no zoning of the ticket and that aspirants from the three senatorial districts are free to contest.

In line with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC primary is scheduled to be held mid next month (February 17). Ikpea said: “We were invited for a meeting in Abuja, where we were asked to provide our membership cards, voter cards, and proof of support for the party over the years. I should be the person to be considered for Edo governorship ticket in 2024. If you look at the history of APC, I am one of the founding members, and not just a founding member, but one of the financers of the party.

The governorship aspirant said: “My intention is borne out of a genuine desire to offer a new lease of leadership to our people, following the political disconnect of the present leadership in the state, seeing the decline it has brought upon us. • Party vows to reclaim state from PDP

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted a direct mode of primary for the party’s governorship shadow election in Edo State slated for February 17.

The party reached the decision on Monday night at the extended Edo State stakeholders’ meeting with its NWC on the state governorship election at its national secretariat in Abuja.

This came on the heels of Senator Adams Oshiomole’s announcement of the resolve of the party to reclaim the state from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 21 poll which has 29 contenders jostling for the APC ticket.

Reading the APC resolution while addressing reporters yesterday on the outcome of the stakeholders’ meeting, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary Duro Meseko said the NWC, after consultation, resolved to conduct its primary through the direct mode of election.

The resolution reads: “After due consultations with Edo State APC stakeholders, the NWC has approved direct primaries as the mode of election to be used to produce the governorship candidate of the party for the state.

“Given the large numbers of aspirants jostling for the party’s ticket in Edo State, the NWC urged the stakeholders to unite in trimming the number of aspirants.

“The NWC urged all the governorship aspirants to exhibit party discipline and patriotism by shunning the attitude of running to the courts at every opportunity instead of exploring internal dispute resolution mechanisms, especially after party primaries.

“It was resolved that for the smooth running of the party, all members should ensure strict compliance with their financial obligations to the party, in line with the party’s constitution.

“The NWC also resolved that for want of time, the E-registration exercise of the party for fresh members be conducted after the primaries in order not to derail the smooth conduct of the Primaries.

“The stakeholders were urged by the NWC to promote unity within the ranks of the party to go into the election as one family bound by progressive ideals and fully geared to reclaim the party’s mandate in Edo State.”

The meeting was attended by Edo State APC Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadie-Igbinigie and APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim.
