The All Progressives Congress (APC) has shifted its primary election in Bayelsa State to Saturday. The election was scheduled for today.

This was contained in a letter by National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole and Acting National Secretary Victor Giadom to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The letter said the shift was caused by planning and logistic reasons.

It reads: “We wish to advise that due to planning and logistic reasons, we have rescheduled… our primary election in respect of the Bayelsa State governorship election to… Saturday, August 31…”

  • Protesters block APC secretariat, demand explanation for Irukera’s disqualification

A group of protesters on the platform of Kogi Mandate Group on Wednesday evening blocked entrance to the National secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) demanding explanation why their candidate for the Kogi Governorship primary, Babatunde Irukera was not cleared to contest the party primary.

The group alleged that the National Working Committee of the party deliberately omitted the name of Irukera from the list of cleared aspirants even after the Appeals committee set up by the party had cleared him for the contest.

Irukera was disqualified by the Screening Committee headed by Senator Hope Uzodinma for invalid declaration of age, not attaching his academic credentials and supporting documents and for his nomination form not duly signed.

But a copy of the appeals committee report cited by The Nation on Wednesday claimed that they found no evidence to support the claim by the screening committee after listening to oral submission by Irukera and therefore cleared him for the primary.

But after its meeting on Tuesday night to consider the reports, the National Working Committee upheld the decision of the screening committee and disqualified Irukera from the contest, a decision that did not go down with his supporters.

However, the group accused the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party of deliberately shutting out Irukera to pave way for Governor Yahaya Bello to emerge unopposed at the primary billed to hold in Lokoja on Thursday.

Spokesperson for the group, Amos Alfa expressed surprise that the party went ahead to disqualify Irukera in spite of the fact that he was cleared by the screening committee of the party.

He said: “We want justice to be done. Irukera was cleared in 2015 by this same party and he contested at the primaries. The sitting governor is aware that only Irukera can unseat him. We have evidence that in the result from screening panel, it was written boldly that he was cleared. We want justice on this issue. The party should not be left in the wrong hands. Let APC do justice to ensure that Babatunde feature in the primaries otherwise what happened in Zamfara state would happen in Kogi state.”

Some of the placards brandished by the protesters had inscriptions like “We say no to impunity in Kogi”, Hope and Oshiomhole! stop sale of kogi Governor ticket to Bello, he can’t win election,” “Do not kill APC in Kogi state, APC should be fair and transparent”, “APC learn from Zamfara mistakes.”

A statement signed by the party’s spokesman, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu had announced that the NWC has cleared nine aspirants to contest the indirect governorship primary comprising Governor Bello, Hadiza Iyoma Ibrahim, Yahaya Odidi Audu, Sani Lulu Abdullahi, Engr. Abubakar Bashir, Engr. Danlami Umar Mohammed, Yakubu Mohammed, Hassan Abdullahi, Ekele Aishat Blessing just as it has shifted the date for the Bayelsa governorship primary from today to Saturday this week.

  • Ekweremadu: Apologise for supporting IPOB, APC tells PDP

The Governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to offer public apology to Nigerians for supporting the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the past and playing politics with them.

Reacting to weekend’s attack on former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu in Nuremberg, Germany by members of the group, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu described the reaction of the PDP to the attack as hypocritical.

Issa-Onilu said the group his under regional identity to perpetuate criminality in the region while receiving the backings of the PDP and its leaders, stressing that the attack on Ekweremadu was an affront on political dignity.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) strongly condemns the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu, immediate past Deputy Senate President and serving Senator by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Saturday in Nuremberg, Germany.

“Those involved in the despicable actions and the organisation they represent are unworthy in character. No Nigerian should be assaulted in the manner Senator Ekweremadu was. It is an indecent action and it is below the acceptable standard of behaviour expected of our citizens whether in Nigeria or abroad.

“It is however regrettable that some of the people and organizations who had offered these irresponsible elements open support in the past are raising their voices now. It would be recalled that the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its leaders chose to play politics over a matter that called for collective patriotic actions when IPOB raised a terror group in the South East.

“It is clear that PDP and its other short-sighted co-travelers who were the main cheerleaders of IPOB owe this country an apology. IPOB hid under regional identity to perpetrate criminality having recruited some misguided elements and miscreants.

“Are we surprised by the PDP’s hypocritical reaction to the unfortunate attack on Senator Ekweremadu? No! The PDP and their leaders have acted true to type. This is what happens when politicians become myopic and allow narrow sentiments becloud their sense of judgement.

“We all have a responsibility to collectively rise against evil wherever we find it and in whatever guise it appears. We hope lessons have been learnt from this unfortunate incident.”

  • APC UK disclaims factional group

The United Kingdom (UK) chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclaimed a factional group led by Ade Omole.

The party said: “He does not represent APC UK as a leader, chieftain or whatsoever title he wishes to appropriate to himself.”

In a statement yesterday, Dr. Philip Idaewor said the party’s UK chapter, which was approved by the National Executive Council (NEC) under his leadership, had put out series of public statements in the past.

Idaewor claimed that he advised the party’s leadership as regards taking steps to verify the authenticity of persons coming from the UK who lay claims to representing the party.

He regretted that despite these actions and previous statements from the chapter, the individuals have continued their activities of misrepresenting the chapter with actions that tend to portray the party to the public in bad light as existing in factions.

He said: “The fact of the matter is that there are no factions of the party in the UK, but a group of individuals who are simply determined to not obey the rules set by the party.

“The UK chapter of APC has a clear structure that recognises branches across the UK as well as Nigerian geopolitical caucuses.

“APC UK chapter exists as a chapter of the party recognised by the NEC of our party, having satisfied the requirements set by the party’s leadership. Our chapter is one of the 12 approved Diaspora chapters of the party.”

Idaewor urged the party leadership to call to order all those in the Diaspora who think, behave and act bigger than the party.

He also appealed to the party leadership under Adams Oshiomhole to use his good office to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to restore confidence in the Diaspora chapters.

  • PDP, APC bicker over Masari’s achievements in Katsina

The two leading political parties in Katsina State – the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and  the All Progressives Congress (APC) – on Sunday traded words over the pace of Governor Aminu Bello Masari’s administration since it came on board on May 29.

The PDP Chairman, Alhaji Salisu Yusuf Majigiri during an interview with The Nation, berated Masari for celebrating over the inauguration of two link roads with a total mileage of 32-kilometre by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said former Governor Shema inaugurated more than 200-kilometre roads without fanfare

Majigiri also criticised the governor for lack of pace, adding that he was not ready for governance considering the fact that he was yet to appoint his commissioners and Chief of staff.

He said: “I thought by having the privilege of hosting the President, who coincidentally comes from the state, he will leverage on that to embark on multi-sectoral projects in Education, Health, Power, Youth empowerment, Agriculture and so on, to build multi billion naira projects that touch on a cross-section of our people”

“You cannot compare Masari’s tenure with Shema’s. The former even commissioned the 100-km Marshi-Mai Adua road without fanfare or ceremony, but here we are commissioning just 32-km with a presidential attendance”

“We are waiting for him to form his cabinet so that we can see if there is any hope or anything new to achieve. Nothing has changed, no new exco has been formed since March 9 and now, and instead of progressing, we are retrogressing. I don’t think they are ready for governance.”

But, the APC-controlled state government, however, fired back, dismissing the concerns of the opposition party.

It insisted that the projects inaugurated by the President remains  only a tip of the iceberg compared to the ones he will commission later when he comes for a state visit.

Director General, Media Labaran Malumfashi told The Nation that the governor “ambushed” the President during his Salah holiday in Daura to inaugurated the road projects

He said: “Masari seized the Salah break to ambush the President; there are several other state projects to be commissioned when he comes on an official visit. When the time comes, the whole world will see what Masari has done for the people of Katsina State.”

On the argument that the governor is not ready for business since he is yet to constitute his exco, Labaran insisted that the government is on course, notwithstanding not appointing commissioners yet

  • ‘APC ‘ll retain Ondo in 2020’

The Ondo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday vowed to retain power in the state in next year’s governorship election. The party said “the indicators are unambiguous”.

The party said Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is leading a government that is sensitive and responsive to the needs of the people.

The party said in a statement by its spokesman, Alex Kalejaiye, that” we harbour no doubts that God is happy with the APC-led government and the people are rejoicing”.

It said contrary to speculative analyses, the Ondo State APC is neither dying nor growing weak.

The State Executive, the statement added, was not factionalised and disenchanted with a government that has made the party proud, and created an atmosphere of confidence and trust between the government and the governed.

It added: ” the State Working Committee (SWC), is deeply preoccupied with its continuous duty of ensuring, and sustaining oneness and unity of members without prejudice. The SWC has no regards for camps or groups.

“The APC-led government has never slacked in the construction of quality roads, provision of portable water, massive investment in Agriculture and the health sector, creation of industrial hub in the State. All these are being done without compromising on the welfare and morale of the engine-room of government.

“It is germane to state emphatically that no serious-minded government, that is determined to make indelible marks, can jettison the above activities for weekly empowerment’’.

“APC appreciated the untainted efforts and sacrifices of leaders that are forward-looking on matters of concern to the State chapter.”

  • Kogi APC primary: Our delegates are being intimidated, says Audu

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Prince Mustapha Mona Audu, has alleged intimidation of delegates that will select the party’s candidate on August 29 in Lokoja.

But, the party chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, denied knowledge of any intimidation, saying no delegate to the primary has reported to him about any harassment.

Mustapha, who is son of the former Governor Abubakar Audu, said the delegates were being intimidated and compelled to vote for a certain aspirant.

He said that he has written to the President, other leaders of the party and security agents.

Audu said: “What we are seeing is unbelievable, especially the level of poverty, suffering and the insecurity of delegates right now. Our delegates are in trouble. One delegates from the west had his wife kidnapped. When his wife was returned, they then kidnapped his second son, all in a bid to get them to vote a certain way.

“We believe we need to bring this to attention of the public that they are disturbing our delegates and a lot of them have been told not to interact at all with aspirants. This is not the APC we built, this is not the tenets of democracy that we expect. But still, in the face of all these challenges they are still defiling the odds and we are interacting.”

  • Presidency, PDP clash over economy, security

The Presidency on Wednesday clashed with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the latter’s claim that the country was collapsing under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.

It (the Presidency) referred the opposition to the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s economic scorecard in the past four years to show how it has taken the economy out of the woods.

“Nigeria’s economy is not in trouble,” presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement last night. It was a reply to a claim by the PDP leadership that the government has scored below average in tackling insecurity, political uncertainties and poor economy.

PDP spokesman Kola Ologbodiyan said the opposition political party decided to raise the red flag because the country was collapsing under the APC.

But Shehu insisted that the economy had grown under President Buhari.

He said: “In keeping with historical trends, there is less economic activity during the electoral cycle.  For instance, the economy grew by 2.35 per cent in Q2 of 2015 and 3.96 per cent in Q1 of 2015 as compared to 5.94 per cent in Q4 of 2014

“While foreign direct investment can help, it is not the only source of investment in the economy. There is also domestic investment, which is either undertaken by the government or by the private sector.

“It is also noteworthy that capital importation into Nigeria grew by 21.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 as compared to the last quarter of 2018.  Indeed, foreign portfolio investment (which is still foreign investment) was $7.14 billion in the first quarter of the year.

“A look at business pages in newspapers shows that there is a lot of business activity going on in the country.

“Two stories in today’s paper point to increasing economic activity.

“First is that the profit of UACN grew in the first half of this year by 61 per cent (pg 12 The Nation).

“Second is that Business Day (pg1) states that cargo imports jumped by 21 per cent in the first half of 2019.”

Increasing imports, Shehu noted, is a pointer to greater economic activity and the availability of foreign exchange with which to conduct business in the country.

He went on: “A major constraint to business was the Apapa gridlock which a number of companies had listed as the major impediment to doing business.  This situation has improved tremendously (see pg 23 of The Nation)”

He said that President Buhari improved relations with China, the United States (U.S.) and Europe and won their support for the administration’s development agenda in his first four years.

According to Shehu, President Buhari has channelled unprecedented sums of money into infrastructure development.

He said: “Capital spending has been kept at about 30 percent of annual budgets. Construction of roads, highways, public transport and airports has sharply increased. The government is spending heavily on power.

“This, combined with private sector investment, has grown power generation capacity.

“All said and done, President Buhari remains the best hope for the Nigerian economy. The country needs change and this remains the person with the will and determination to deliver.”

The PDP leadership had expressed a deep concern that the nation, which it said was hitherto a prosperity hub and a reference point for democracy, personal freedom and good governance, was becoming a failed state.

It lamented that the Buhari administration could not has been unable to guarantee any of its fundamental duties, thus making citizens “now desperate to take their destinies in their hands”.

According to Ologbodiyan, the PDP leadership took the decision to flash the red flag after a crucial meeting in Abuja yesterday.

The PDP statement reads: “The red flag has become urgent following the manifest total loss of faith by Nigerians across the board, in the ability of the Buhari Presidency to provide a democratic leadership that can engender a peaceful and secure nation.

“It is clear that the APC and the Buhari Presidency have held Nigerians hostage. Nigerians are now being treated like a conquered people. They can no longer freely exercise their constitutionally guaranteed rights; executive high-handedness has become a state policy just as the APC government, burdened by challenges of illegitimacy, has lost direction and only thriving in vindictiveness.”

The PDP alleged that the government opted to breathe down on perceived opponents following what it called the collapse of the APC’s defence at the tribunal.

It said: “Our party has also noticed that since the defence of the APC and President Buhari collapsed at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, the APC and its government have taken to harassment and repression of Nigerians by surreptitiously suspending constitutional provisions of freedom of speech and association in our country.

“Many compatriots are being taken in as political prisoners all in a bid to foist a siege mentality and suppress public opinion.

“Today, the Buhari Presidency cannot guarantee the security and safety of citizens. Bloodletting and violence have become the order of the day. Invaders, insurgents, kidnappers and killers have taken over major highways and communities; our nation’s security machinery have become overstretched; Nigerians now live in palpable fear; they cannot freely travel within their country and the government has no answers.

“On the economic front, President Buhari has ruined our economy and led our nation to become the world’s capital of poverty, while condoning the humongous corruption that has become the hallmark of his failed administration.

“Sadly, President Buhari’s anti-development policies, the corruption in his government as well as its failure to provide security have scared away foreign investors from our nation”.

PDP observed that only recently, the United Nations declared that “43 per cent of Nigeria’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has taken flight to other countries, adding that unemployment has gone out of proportion and there is no hope in sight.”

The party called on Nigerians of good faith as well as the international community to speak out against the prevailing situation before it is too late.

It urged Nigerians not to despair, assuring them that the PDP candidate in the February 23 presidential election would get judicial victory at the Presidential Election Petitions’ Court (PEPC).

When contacted for reaction, the APC said it would not glorify the PDP with a response.

Its spokesman Lanre Issa-Onilu told The Nation last night: “My response is that when the PDP starts making sense, we’ll respond to them. We have issues of governance to deal with an attempt to respond to their senseless talk will be a distraction.”
