  • APC chairmen back Bulama for National Secretary

State chairmen of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) under the aegis of Forum of State Chairmen of the APC have resolved to back the candidacy of Waziri Bulama for the position of the party’s National Secretary.

Rising from a three-day meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital, the state chairmen said they were convinced about Bulama’s commitment to the growth of the party, hence their decision to support him to occupy the position.

Other groups have endorsed Bulama, who was the Deputy Director General (Coordination) of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) to replace the former National Secretary and current governor of Yobe State, Mallam Mai Mala Buni.

They include Buhari Support Organization (BSO), which is the umbrella body of the President’s support groups across the country.

Sources close to the forum said the state chairmen were not happy with the seeming lack of activities at the party’s secretariat.

They believe that having a substantive national secretary would improve activities at the secretariat.

In a chat with our reporter, a source, who spoke in confidence, said: “As you can see, APC does not seem to be in government. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is still occupying spaces everywhere. We feel that a substantive National Secretary of the party would make the party busy and bring more positive attention to the party.

“In this light, the state party chairmen have given their nod to Bulama to occupy the position after interacting with him.”

A Deputy Chairman of the forum and APC Chairman in Delta State, Prophet Jones Erue Ode, affirmed that Bulama came to address them during their meeting and they resolved to work with him.

He said: “We have agreed to work with him. We agreed to stand with him, having listened to him and watched his tall credentials.

“We need someone who can stand for our party, who is intelligent and has a lot of things working in his favour. We hail his credentials. We hail his integrity and sacrifice for our party as well as his commitment to our party. We said we will stand with him.”

The quest to replace Buni has been on the front burner of the party, as the National Working Committee (NWC) recently appointed the Deputy National Secretary, Victor Gaidom, as the Acting National Secretary.

  • APC, PDP trade words over $1b ECA cash

The Presidency yesterday hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its allegation that the $1 drawn from the Excess Crude Account was spent by President Muhammadu Buhari on the 2019 elections.

It accused the opposition party of being under socio-emotional distress.

Reacting to the PDP claim, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, described the allegation as ‘rubbish’.

Shehu said: “The PDP is under a socio-emotional distress. They think that all governments in the world run on the basis of freewheeling looting as they did their own.”

Giving account of how the money withdrawn from the Excess Crude account was spent, he said: “Here is what happened to that $1,000 million. It’s on record that the Buhari administration paid about $490 million for a dozen Super Tucano fighter aircraft in a direct, government-to-government (no contractors or commission agents) transaction with government of the United State (U.S.).

“Various other military procurements have been made. Balance of expenditure stands at about USD 880 million or so.”

The presidential spokesman said barring considerations of national security, the details of the stage of implementation, the procurements made and the suppliers could be obtained today.

Differentiating Buhari’s administration from the former PDP’s, he said that the now opposition party spent defence procurement funds on 2015 election campaigns.

He said: “The PDP spent defence procurement funds on their failed 2015 political campaigns as proven in court. That is not to say every succeeding government, more so one led by a Buhari will do the same.”

The PDP, through its spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan, yesterday called for probe of the whereabouts of the $1 billion approved in 2017 by President Muhammadu Buhari to address the security challenges.

It also explained that the call for investigation followed an alleged confession by a high-ranking official that he knew nothing on the whereabouts or disbursement of the $1bn drawn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA).

He also listed other security challenges amidst the alleged disappearance of the $1 billon to include: insurgency, banditry, killings and kidnapping.

Ologbondiyan said: “The revelation further vindicates the PDP on our initial alarm that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration is overtly corrupt, deceptive and unreliable in the handling the affairs of our nation.

“It further validates the stance of the PDP that agents of the Buhari Presidency and the APC were hiding under the guise of security to siphon the $1 billion from the ECA.

“This, perhaps, informed the desperation by the cabal to draw from the Account without recourse to statutory due process of appropriation by the National Assembly.”

  • Kogi 2019: APC stakeholders kick against indirect primary

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Kogi State under the aegis of Kogi State Stakeholders Forum have warned the party against using indirect primaries to pick its governorship candidate for the November election.

They said in a statement in Lokoja, the state capital, that the party risked a defeat if it adopted indicted primaries.

They said: “the victory of APC in 2015 and the events thereafter are still fresh in our memories but it will be the height of delusion for any sincere party faithful of our great party to assume the success achieved then can be replicated in the next election if a level playing field is not availed all aspirants for a free, fair and credible process that will be acceptable to all, irrespective of the outcome.

“To proclaim all is well with APC in the state is deceitful and playing the Ostrich which might have unpalatable consequences for the party in the coming election.

“Despite the number of aspirants who have indicated the desire to contest, the leadership of our party should ignore any position expressed by online poster aspirants on which mode of election to adopt for the primaries.”

The group said: “We are firmly convinced that direct primaries will enable level playing field majority of aspirants have been clamoring for. Indirect primary will confer unmerited advantage on some aspirants which will reduce the process into an unfair, restricted and compromised contest. The consequences of indirect primary election for our great party will be dire, which makes our call for direct primary election imperative.”

  • Ex-governor’s son in governorship race

Abubakar Ibrahim, son of a former Kogi State Governor, Ibrahim Idris, will be challenging Governor Yahaya Bello, who is seeking re-election in the November 16 Kogi governorship election.

Bello is seeking the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ibrahim is chasing the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The two contenders had obtained their nomination documents at the Abuja national headquarters of their parties yesterday.

After collecting his forms, Bello had declared that those accusing him of non-performance had not visited Kogi State.

Ibrahim, however, countered the governor, saying that Bello has become a huge liability to the people in the three and half years of his administration.

Ibrahim, who said the governor’s record of poor performance is unprecedented in the country, declared that this informed his decision to challenge Bello at the poll.

Also at the PDP secretariat was Senator Diri Douye, who obtained his nomination papers for the Bayelsa State governorship election, which is also slated for November 16.

Addressing reporters after picking his nomination  forms, Duoye, unlike his Kogi State counterpart, said his mission was to improve on the achievements of the incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson.

His address centred mainly on what he described as the remarkable programmes and achievements of the Bayelsa governor.

“We want to deepen the service that Governor Henry Seriake Dickson has given to the people of Bayelsa in terms of health, in terms of education, in terms of security, in terms of infrastructure and in all spheres of human endeavours.”

  • Just In: APC releases timetable for Kogi, Bayelsa governorship poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2019 governorship primaries to select its flag bearers for Nov.16 Kogi and Bayelsa governorship poll.

The ruling party said this in a statement signed by its National Organising Secretary, Mr Emma Ibediro in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ibediro said that the timetable and schedule for the conduct of primaries are in line with the provision of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

“In line with the provision of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and INEC guidelines, the APC hereby releases this time-table and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2019 Governorship Primary Elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States,’’ he said.

He said primary election will hold on Aug. 29, 2019 while election appeal has been slated for Monday, Sept. 2, 2019.

“There shall be no separate charge for deputy.

“Female aspirants and physically challenged aspirants 50 per cent of the prescribed fees for each position.

“All payments should be made in full directly into the designated bank accounts of the APC,’’ he said.

  • Court bars APC, police from interfering in Edo Assembly matters

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the Inspector General Police (IG), Adamu Mohammed, have been barred from harassing or interfering in the legislative duties of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Justice M. Umar gave the order following an motion ex-parte by Clerk Yayaha Audu Omogbai and the House of Assembly.

Defendants in the June 28 suit are National Working Committee of the APC, IG, Edo State Commissioner of Police and National Spokesman of the APC Lanre Issa-Onilu.

Justice Umar ordered the defendants, their servants and agents, not to interfere, disrupt or obstruct the constitutional duties of members of the Assembly.

He also barred the defendants from further publishing in any newspaper or other media, any inciting publications concerning the inauguration of the seventh Assembly, as well as the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker which held on June 17.

The court document reads: “An interim order of injunction is hereby granted restraining the defendants by themselves, their servants, agents, officers or privies from interfering with, obstructing or harassing, in any manner whatsoever, the plaintiffs in the performance of their constitutional duties as the Legislative Arm of the Edo State Government pending the hearing and determination of the motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.

“That interim order of injunction is also granted restraining the defendants by themselves, their servants, agents, officers or privies from further committing any act aimed at disparaging the integrity of the legislative arm of the Edo State government and/or destabilising the peace, order and good governance of Edo State in general, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.”

The case was adjourned till October 9.

Only 12 of the 24 lawmakers in the Assembly have been sworn in. The 12 others, believed to have the backing of Oshiomhole, have since June 20 fled to Abuja over alleged threats to their life.

The lawmaker-elect representing Akoko-Edo II, Emmanuel Agbaje, has been sworn in. Agbaje was sworn-in yesterday when the Assembly convened about 4.24pm by Speaker Frank Okiye who administered the oath of office.

Okiye explained that the House had to reconvene because of the compulsory retirement of a deputy Clerk of the House which would only become effective with confirmation from the House.

Agbaje said he presented himself for swearing in based on the position of his constituents and leaders of the APC.

  • Buhari support organisations hold thanksgiving

The Buhari Support Organisations (BSO), Southwest Zone, led by Prince Felix Awofisayo, has held a thanksgiving service in Osogbo, Osun State.

The service was to thank God for the successful and peaceful outcome of the 2019 presidential election in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari, and to offer prayers that the impending Supreme Court judgment on the Osun governorship election will be decided in favour of Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

Prominent clerics present at the thanksgiving were Dr Taofeek Abdulhameed, Deputy Imam of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede; Special Apostle J. F Ogunsola from the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, and others.

Governor Oyetola, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Binouyo acknowledged the impact of support organisations in politics, and gave great kudos to the strategic efforts of the organisation.

Prince Awofisayo thanked God for the re-election of President Buhari, who he described as a believer in social justice “and the solidarity of communities”. He also prayed for Oyetola’s success at the Supreme Court.

He said: “The Next Level will be pivotal for the good health of the republic as well as the consolidation of what President Buhari has already started, which is the creation of a political economy that will benefit the majority. We give thanks that under the guidance of our creator, the president is committed to waging a no holds barred attack on poverty.

“In the Next level, the war will be fought with rigour, the foundation laid for poverty to be eradicated. When the history of our time is written, those who rallied around the ordained banner of social justice through the Next level will have their names on the pantheon of the honourables.”

  • ‘Buhari, Sanwo-Olu should develop economy’

Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos East, Kaoli Olusanya has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to show Nigerians clear-cut vision that will enhance development, peace, progress and unity.

The former Commissioner for Agric and Cooperatives said a leader must lead, and “that is why Mr. President must show us where we are going in the next two, three and four years”.

Olusanya, who addressed reporters at the party secretariat on ACME road, maintained that there must be equity, justice and fair-play in the actions and in-actions of President Buhari.

The ex-commissioner, who called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to maintain the momentum, stressed that the governor has three assignments at the moment. The first is speedy completion of the Lagos/Badagry Expressway and township roads that will provide accessibility to homes, ease traffic gridlock, save manpower and ensure bonding with families.

According to him, sustainable infrastructure must be put in place as well as clearing of canals and drainages during this raining season to checkmate flooding and unexpected deaths.

His words: “The number of out-of-school children will become a time bomb if the situation is not succinctly addressed. We have over 10 million out-of-school children in the country and I am sure Lagos, with its large population, could have up to 1 million. These are the root causes of crime and insurgency. We need to revive peoples hope because joblessness and poor living conditions can aggravate tension against the government.”

  • My suspension from APC in bad faith, says Daramola

Former House of Representatives member Bimbo Daramola was recently suspended from the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC). He spoke with Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU in Lagos on his ordeal, the politics of suspension, and prospects and constraints of reconciliation in the chapter.

What is your assessment of the APC in Ekiti?

Am I in a position to assess anything now? I am under suspension.

How do you view your suspension from the party?

I viewed the news on television. They wrote me a letter. People started calling me from far and near. They wrote me a letter from my ward. In any case, I am wondering how the absence of the sense of proprietary could make people to commit errors. In that same ward, from chairman to ex-officio; 26-member executive of the ward, I don’t know anybody there; how they were selected, how they were appointed. I complained. Nothing was done. In a ward that I practically funded. The meeting of the ward takes place in front of my grandfather’s house.

How do I view my suspension? I will allow posterity to judge. I am watching. They could suspend Segun Oni, Oyetunde Ojo, and others. They tried to suspend Chief Ben Oguntuase. Ife Arowosoge was complaining that they wanted to suspend him. It is a rash of suspension and a raid. Whatever could have informed it, whatever would have made those people to think that my reward should be suspension, I wish them the best of luck. I let posterity to judge. I commit them, that decision and everyone that was part of it to posterity. I know who I was and who I am in the party. We should wait for the judgment of history.

Could be say the confusion was an offshoot of the last primaries?

I am not too sure. Initially, when you love people; the party, your wife, everybody, you won’t see things that were coming. Ekiti will say ‘eti oloro maa ndi.’ So, I wasn’t in a position to see anything coming, before either the governorship or House of Representatives election. The kind of love I had was fuelled by sacrifice. I said people humbly to go and assess Bimbo Daramola as a member of the party, from the days of AD through ACD, AC, ACN to APC. Let’s look at Bimbo Daramola and his records. Because of my love for the party and the governor, I did not expect it. I was working to shore up the goodwill of the party, the goodwill of the governor, the goodwill of Ekiti. I was like Paul, committed to evangelism. But, the events that happened to me in the last two years have made me to take a back seat. People would ask: this has happened to you, how come that you were nit sensitive? This has been long in coming. Everything came to a head now. Like Jimmy Cliff said, I can see clearly now. A whole lot of things have become clearer to me.

Many people are blaming you for the loss of the APC and the gain of the PDP during the Hiuse of Representatives election in your constituency….

How can they blame me? Do you know that, up to now, nobody, except two or three people, wants to talk to me. I am a pariah of some sorts.  Nobody wants to talk to me. But, they have forgotten that I came to politics on the crest of my faith. My ideology is rooted in Christ, who says that I have overcome the world. And when God says I have overcome the world, all these pecuniary things people are looking for, I am not looking for them. I am not looking for it. Is it not the same the party where I put my life on line several times? I am sure Asiwaju knows about it. I am sure Ogbeni Aregbesola knows about it. I am sure Baba Akande knows about it. So, if they decide to do that to me, it is fine. A man had 100 sheep in the Bible. One got lost. He left the 99 to go and look for one. A successful father had children in his house. One came to the father to say ‘give me my inheritance. I am going’. His father said ‘don’t go’. The Bible records that the prodigal son took his inheritance when his father was alive. You only share inheritance when the man had passed on. But, this man collected his inheritance when his father was alive. He assumed that his father was dead. In his mind, he must have constructed that his father was dead. The Bible records that he went to a far country. That far country in the context of politics meant that he decamped and went to another party. I never did that. He was very prodigious. He spent all and lost all the money. And then, other children were with the father. This means that when the party was on its knee, we were there. We did not leave the party. Adversity could be very beautiful. When you go to church, you are warned to be careful about the ‘evil of peace time.’ E sora fun ewu igba irorun. Adversity could be very beautiful. Baba Bola Ajibola taught me that. He said Obasanjo’s brilliance was a product of adversity. Obasanjo was a poor man. So, Obasanjo’s success was a product of adversity.

When this party was prostrate, all these guys, from the state to Abuja, where were they? They were the people stoning us. They were the ones who told us we had no future. When they offered me a million dollars to leave the party, I did not take it. It was not that we were in government. A million dollars. I can mention names. And we kept on building the party and gave everything for the party. Three major empowerment; I built hospital, purchased JAMB forms for 250 children, regardless of where you were coming from in Ekiti State. We were building goodwill for the party. But, when prosperity time came, what happened? They didn’t remember us. Some came back after squandering all that, and what did the father say? He said ‘go and bath him, put y ring in his hand.’ The senior brother said ‘what about those of us who remained with you?’ he said don’t worry. That is the situation. Those who were not part of us a back in the house. Nobody even have the presence of mind to say this journey started from somewhere. There were some people who were heavy lifters of the weight of the party at that time.

What’s your relationship with the governor now?

I don’t know. There is no relationship. The relationship is that he is the governor of Ekiti State and I am in my own corner as Bimbo Daramola. If we our 40 years of relationship did not amount to anything; he was two years my senior in school in 1978. Ninety five per cent of the people the governor knows today, he didn’t know them when he was my senior for two years. Where were they in 1978? If a somebody has been your neighbour for 40 years and he almost sleeps on your bed, you should not be afraid to be comfortable with him. If a relationship of 40 years did not count for anything, why would it count now?

Is reconciliation foreclosed in Ekiti APC?

People should take responsibility. First and foremost, there should be an admittance of the need for reconciliation. I was pleasantly surprised today when I woke up and saw in the CNN President Trump of United States and the North Korean leader shaking hands. Two weeks ago, they were at daggers drawn. I saw Triump taking guided steps and walking towards Kim Young, shaking hands. I was surprised. Anything can still happen. They two of them must have come to a point. My biggest worry is that people don’t realise the reality of posterity. Power is transient. There is a limitation. Power is limited. It will terminate one day.

  • APC challenges PDP to offer quality opposition

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to first put its house in order and offer quality opposition rather than embarking on shadow chasing with baseless allegations against.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary Mallam Lanre Issa- Onilu told the PDP in a statement that it should engage the ruling party on issues of good governance rather than interfering in other party’s affairs.

The APC described as laughable that the PDP, who could not rally its members to support its preferred candidates for National Assembly principal officers’ positions was talking about infighting in the APC over appointments.

Issa-Onilu said President Muhammadu Buhari will always appoint people of proven integrity who are loyal to the programmes and mandate of the party and government into positions of authority.

The statement reads: “Judging by the latest antics and laughable allegations of the PDP, it is now clear that the rejected party has again resumed its idle chatter and specious remarks. How long will it take PDP to learn proper opposition politics?

Read Also: NASS: We have not selected principal officers – APC

“PDP’s allegation of ‘infighting’ within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency over appointments is the latest of shameful interventions of PDP in our nation’s affairs.

“The party that was sent into a state of shock following the outcome of the National Assembly election is now accusing APC of infighting. The accusation is coming from the PDP that failed to rally its members to support its own candidates for principal offices at the National Assembly.

“Perhaps, to the delusional PDP, it is a sign of division within our rank to successfully mobilize our members behind our candidates for the National Assembly election.

“In other words, PDP had proved ultimate unity within its rank with several of its members disregarding the directive to vote for its adopted candidates. Here you have a party wallowing in denial.

“As contained in PDP’s latest statement, odious practices like looting, booty-sharing and power-grabbing are not practices that the APC wishes to continue from the wasted PDP years.

“Nigerians voted against these devious practices of PDP in 2015 and 2019 and opted for Change, which APC represents. We, therefore, call on the PDP to do better as opposition by engaging our party on issues of good governance and matters that would better the lives of the people. This is the least Nigerians expect from the main opposition party.

“While the APC does not owe the PDP any explanation on the modalities for appointments, we assure Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration would always appoint deserving individuals, who share our progressive ideals and Change Agenda into positions.”
