Monarchs are biased arbiters, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused traditional rulers of taking sides with the Ayo Fayose administration in the impeachment crisis rocking the state.

The party, in a statement yesterday by its Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, deplored what it called “the partisan intervention of the traditional rulers in the crisis”, adding that it was not surprised by the roles of the Obas.

Awe wondered why the monarchs were silent when Governor Ayo Fayose allegedly unleashed illegalities in the state by masterminding unconstitutional change of leadership in the House and using seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers to commit serial illegalities.

The APC boss said the traditional leaders by their behaviour had confirmed the allegations against them by a group of Ekiti youths that they agreed to support Fayose when he sought their cooperation to unleash mayhem on the opposition.

Taking sides with Fayose and his government, according to Awe, is akin to supporting illegalities, brigandage, attacks on the constitution and the rule of law.

Awe said: “When we read in the media that the Obas agreed to keep quiet when Fayose unleashes violence on the opposition, we did not believe until events began to unfold.

“To respond to this clearly unfortunate partisan position by the obas, we will like to ask the same questions that the Ekiti Youth Vanguard asked:  where were the obas when Fayose stormed the court to desecrate the temple of justice? They kept quiet. Where were they when the 19 lawmakers were being hunted in their homes?

“What did they say or do when seven PDP members held illegal sitting to purportedly impeach the Speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin?

“The seven PDP lawmakers sat to approve the budget, Fayose’s cabinet nominees and pass certain laws that required public hearings but they refused to hold public hearings on these laws, what did the obas say about these illegal acts and what did they say or do to correct the anomalies?

“What did they say when Fayose withdrew Omirin’s security aides, seized his official car, locked up his office, cut electricity supply to his house, forced him out of his official quarters and illegally sacked his aides?

“What did our obas say when Fayose seized the salaries and allowances of the lawmakers?

“What did they say about constitutional breaches which Fayose committed with impunity? The monarchs were alive when the lawmakers were not allowed into Ekiti State to attend their campaign rallies, what did they do?”

The party regretted that the obas chose to keep quiet when Fayose turned the heat on the lawmakers.

“This is a clear support for brigandage and lawlessness and it is unfortunate that the crisis is being turned into a profiteering escapade.”

  • APC to Acting IGP: Shun partisanship; embrace professionalism

APC to Acting IGP: Shun partisanship; embrace professionalism

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the newly-appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to approach his new task with a high level of professionalism while shunning the kind of crass partisanship that has dragged key national institutions of state, especially the police, into the partisan fray.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party advised the Acting IGP to learn from the fate that befell his predecessors who, under their watch, turned the police into the enforcement arm of the ruling party, thus allowing the institution to be wantonly used to thwart the will of the people and act in ways that negate its constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order.

It said irrespective of the reasons for his appointment as the Acting IGP at this time, Mr. Arase must realize that he will be judged solely by the direction to which he takes the police, which is one of the most abused national institutions by those who have been at the helms of the nation’s affairs since the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

”We do not know the reason for the sack of the immediate past IGP, but we have read, just like other Nigerians, that it might not be unconnected with the role he either played or did not play in the last general elections. What we do know is that the police force under the former IG was a major actor in the massive rigging and violence that characterized the elections in some parts of the country, especially in Rivers ,Akwa Ibom Sokoto and Gombe states just to mention a few.

”Now, Mr. Arase faces perhaps the biggest test in his new capacity with the supplementary elections coming up in Abia, Imo and Taraba. We do hope he will not allow the police under him to be used to thwart the will of the people in those states or to give cover to those who will engage in violence. Any IGP worth his salt does not need to pander to the President or the ruling party in carrying out his duties. All he has to do is to make sure the police carries out its statutory duties in accordance with the law and without fear or favour,” APC said.

The party said it does not believe the rumours making the rounds that the new Acting IGP was appointed to facilitate victory for the PDP in those supplementary elections, saying, in any case, that whatever may be the reason for his appointment, he should realize that Nigerians have now reached a level where they will not allow anyone, whether in uniform or not, to either prevent them from exercising their franchise or to collude with politicians to ensure that their votes do not count.

”When Mr. Arase’s predecessor issued an illegal order directing Nigerians to vote and immediately vacate polling units during the last elections, he knew he was acting against what the law stipulates, but he chose to do so anyway to please his masters. However, armed with the position of the law, Nigerians simply ignored the illegal order, voted and stayed behind to defend their votes.

”When that unlawful order is placed side-by-side with other acts that ran contrary to the maintenance of law and order under the immediate past IGP – including the cover given to the OPC to wreak havoc in Lagos, the illegal withdrawal of the security details of House of Representatives’ Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, whom he (former IGP) refused to recognize as Speaker in a clear usurpation of the role of the judiciary, and the shameful role of the police in the Osun Governorship election last year, during which hundreds of APC members were arrested and detained without cause – one will realize to what extent the police was dragged into partisan politics under him.

”But in the end, those for whom the IGP desecrated the police had no qualms about humiliating him out of office. We hope Mr. Arase will learn a lesson from this, toe a different path and not run the police like his private company and a tool in the hands of unscrupulous politicians,” it said.

  • Ekiti: APC plotting to cause chaos from May 29 – Fayose

Ekiti: APC plotting to cause chaos from May 29 – Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on Wednesday said he has uncovered a plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leaders to thrown his state into chaos as from May 29.

Fayose in a statement personally signed by him and made available to reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said he has put the United Nations, African Union and the international community on notice “on the imminent reign of impunity from that day.”

The governor said he was raising the alarm over an alleged threat by the APC to make the state ungovernable, maintaining that “Nigeria and the world at large should know who to hold responsible in the event of anarchy in the state in particular and Yoruba land in general.”

President Goodluck Jonathan who lost in the March 28 presidential election is expected to hand over to the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who ran on the platform of the APC, on May 29.

Fayose is presently locked in a battle of wits with the APC members of the House of Assembly who have fired him a notice of impeachment alongside his deputy, Kolapo Olusola.

The 19 APC lawmakers who are in majority in the House accused Fayose of eight impeachable offences including “unconstitutional change of leadership of the Assembly, passing of Appropriation Bill and  screening and ratifying commissioner nominees with seven Peoples democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers.

Fayose, who maintained that he has no regrets for supporting Jonathan to the best of his ability, said he has information that he is the “prime demolition target of the APC national leadership” for his unrelenting support for the President.

He claimed that “insiders” in the APC informed him that AP leaders are yet to get over the fact that Ekiti is the only state they could not win for Buhari in the entire Southwest region in the presidential poll.

The Ekiti governor vowed that he would never leave the PDP for any other party and would remain as the “last man standing.”

Fayose said: “It has become imperative once again to address the media on the constitutional and political crises being foisted on our dear state, Ekiti by irritants of unbridled ambitions, who are not only devoid of spirit of sportsmanship but implacable even when all odds are against them and roundly rejected by the good people of the state.

“It is no longer news that I defeated an incumbent governor in all the 16 local government areas in the state and that for the first time in the history of Nigeria, attempts were made to use the courts to prevent someone who clearly won a governorship election from assuming office.”

  • APC renews confidence in Tinubu, Ajomale

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State yesterday said it has confidence in its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It decried the call for the removal of the party’s chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale.

In a communiqué by Chief Funso Ologunde (Vice Chairman) and Femi Saheed (Acting Secretary) after an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee in Lagos, members condemned the call  for Ajomale’s resignation.

The communiqué reads: “That we, Executive Committee members of Lagos State APC, have confidence in the state leadership of our party, National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the Governor’s Advisory Committee (GAC).

“That we appreciate the contributions of Governor Babatunde Fashola in achieving this enviable victory.

“That we have confidence in Otunba Oladele Ajomale and commend him for the manner in which he had consistently steered the party’s ship since 2006 when he assumed office as chairman of the defunct Action Congress (AC).

“That we recall Ajomale’s hitherto achievements when both the defunct Action Congress (AC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) swept seats in Lagos State, under his leadership between 2007 and 2011.

“Finally, we appeal to our loyal, committed, appreciative and diligent party members against being drawn into casting aspersion on party leaders, which could portray our party as a divided house.”

The party congratulated Governor-elect Akinwunmi Ambode and others elected or re-elected on its platform on March 28 and April 11.

Appointments: APC alerts on antics of ‘fake consultants’

The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday warned Nigerians against falling victims of fake consultants screening candidates for federal appointments in the incoming administration.

The party urged Nigerians to ignore such text messages, as they were definitely originated and circulated by fraudulent persons.

The APC gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alerted Nigerians to some ‘419’ text messages making the rounds and asking those seeking federal appointments in the incoming Buhari administration to contact certain consultants via telephone and email, saying no consultants have been hired to screen anyone for federal posts.

”Even when it is obvious that those behind these messages are merely seeking to swindle innocent Nigerians, some desperate persons may still fall prey to the evil machinations of the con artists. This is why we have decided to alert Nigerians to the fraudulent text messages.”

APC reiterated its earlier statement that any information concerning appointments into federal posts will be duly communicated to Nigerians at the appropriate time through the usual communication channels.

  • For APC, getting the transition right means all

For APC, getting the transition right means all

The Media and Communications Director of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Garba Shehu, writes on the importance of the transition from the Jonathan Administration to the new dawn.

For more than a week since the out-going Jonathan administration named its own Transition Committee, curiosity has acquired a new meaning all over Nigeria. There is not a day that passes without speculative reporting, 100 per cent of it based on falsehood on what the in-coming government’s team will look like, who is heading its committees, and so forth. Some have even been reporting imaginary fights over this or that office.

For the country’s new governing party, the All Progressives Congress,APC, a transition committee is not only to serve the purpose of diagnosis. A good transition committee must also draw up a plan of action. This alone makes these first early steps to be be challenging. They must be handled with extreme care. If not so handled, the transition may turn into a flashpoint and an unnecessary distraction.

In last few days, there appear to be indications that both the APC and the newly elected President, General Muhammadu Buhari have found a common ground on the Transition Committee. That should help to move the country from its current standstill.

Addressing correspondents at a news conference at his country home in Daura, Katsina State last week, the in-coming President announced that “I will make sure that it is not too big because if it is big, they will start thinking of how they will make the choice of ministers either for themselves or those they want to be ministers. But, my hope and my idea is to get knowledgeable and experienced technocrats that are really patriotic and to study the handing over notes by ministries and make recommendations.”

In an interview with The Nation in its edition of Friday April, 17th, the National Chairman of the Party, Chief Odigie-Oyegun spoke loud and long on the same issues, stating that “we will raise a transition committee to crosscheck whatever papers or records they are handing over to us. In our case, we need a lot of more consultations and be sure that the right caliber of people are there.

“We will study the handover note and make sure that all issues are put in proper perspective for the new government.

“If there are grey areas which experts will have to put us through, we will not hesitate to seek their help.”

From the foregoing, it is very clear that General Buhari’s priorities fit perfectly together with those of the party.

It is important that the incoming administration gets this one right because everything will depend on it. It may not be right at this point to question the goodness of the faith of the out-going administration. The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has earned an incredibly high amount of goodwill following his acceptance of the outcome of the election, which itself had the effect of de-escalating tensions not just among Nigerians but all over the continent. But the President’s committee on transition and hand-over looks to be a trickish one. It seems to be like one drawn to “massage” the numbers and ensure safety for “team Jonathan”. Some names on that list have certainly made the eyes pop out of their sockets. In the President’s list, you have men and women who reflect the worst of our prejudices; men and women who have made themselves the mouthpieces for everything regressive.

This is one reason why President Buhari and his party cannot be too careful on choosing who they will give their part of the assignment to. There is no room for complacency in doing this either. Nothing that puts the new government at a risk should be allowed to happen. What is required of the job is a diagnostic and a forensic understanding of the handover notes. I have my respect for politicians. After all, they are the ones who led the party to this overwhelming mandate. But if they  are given this job, they won’t be an incisive as is needful. Let us not underrate or under-estimate the amount of damage that has been done to national institutions, the economy and politics by the 16-year mismanagement of the country by the PDP. It is the combined effect of their unseriousness, shortcomings and their mistakes that have reduced the once dominant ruling party to a paltry minority stakeholder in the states and the National Assembly following these elections.

As General Buhari has himself mentioned, politicians will come with natural expectations when given this job. In a manner of speaking, they may compromise the ability of the incoming government to get a full understanding of the issues, in other words a good snapshot of the nation, its systems and institutions at the time of this handover.

A membership of the transition committee will naturally confer a sense of already-being- there on many a politician. They will see themselves as the natural successors of the outgoing administration. Some among them already have a sense of victory, a sense of indictment and a sense of entitlement.

Technocrats will on the other hand come in from a detached and hopefully, unbiased standpoint. Without preconceived ideas or mindset, a well-chosen set of technocrats may help unravel the rot that has eaten deep into the oil and maritime sectors, two money spinners, yet hemorrhaging government departments that are adequately represented in Dr. Jonathan’s transition team. Although these are only matters of perception, it is not at all surprising that they have raised serious questions about the sincerity of government in regard to this aspect.

Disregard speculations on ministerial appointments, zoning – APC

The All Progressives Congress on Monday urged Nigerians to disregard speculations concerning the appointment of ministers and the zoning of offices for the incoming administration.

The party in a statement issued in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said there is no iota of truth in the reports about appointment of ministers, zoning of National Assembly’s principal positions and other offices by its National Executive Committee.

The APC assured that all issues of public interest will be handled transparently and conveyed to Nigerians through the usual communication channels.

”No appointments have been made and no offices have been zoned. The main concern of our party at the moment is to ensure a smooth transition and to hit the ground running, in the overall interest of the long-suffering people of Nigeria.

”At the appropriate time, Nigerians will be informed of the appointments made and the offices zoned,” the party said.

  • ‘APC’ll change Nigeria’

    ‘APC’ll change Nigeria’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Adeniyi Abdulfatai Adeagbo, has assured Nigerians that the APC administration will give them the opportunity to see what real development entails.

Adeagbo spoke at the weekend while donating food items and cash across the 10 wards in Itesiwaju Local Government as part of his ‘thank you’ tour to the people for voting for APC candidates.

He said he was confident the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, would perform, considering his antecedent as a former military leader and also because “he has found himself in the midst of those whose great concern is to ensure a Nigeria we will all be proud of”.

“You cannot compare Oyo State to the locust years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The APC administration led by Governor Abiola Ajimobi has ushered many firsts, which the two previous administrations could not achieve and that led to his re-election.

“You should be joyful and grateful to God as our prayers have been answered.

“You should continue to support the administration because it will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to your doorsteps just like it has done in the last 46 months.”

Don’t tamper with ballot papers, Enugu APC warns

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to tamper with the ballot papers, used and unused.

In a statement, APC’s governorship candidate, Okey Ezea, said the electoral body should not attempt to justify the bogus results it announced for the April 11 elections.

The statement reads: “Information at our disposal, which we believe is credible, indicates that all the Presiding Officers (POs) during the elections in Enugu were summoned by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) to the INEC office in Enugu for the purpose of signing  the ballot papers on Friday, April 17.

The POs were said to have been directed to thumb-print and sign the ballot papers to cover up the fake results INEC declared.”

Ezea warned INEC not to tamper with the ballot sheets already submitted to his office as this constitutes electoral fraud. The illegal act, he said, ‘will not stand as we have evidence that some of the results declared did not represent the true situation of the voting and the winners announced.

He maintained that thumb-printing and signing of ballot papers after elections amounted to electoral offence that should be investigated by security agencies if they did not support or encourage the illegality.

The candidate said the APC in Enugu had been pressing for a cancellation of the April 11 election and a rerun conducted.

“The APC in Enugu State have lodged a complaint to INEC chairman through the REC in Enugu, rejecting the fraudulent elections and the results announced. We called for cancellation and a fresh election to be held.

“We have also made our stand known to the public through the media. We use this medium to call on our supporters, some of whom were brutalised and humiliated, to remain calm while we seek justice through the right channels,” Ezea said.

APC wins Orhionmwon South Constituency seat in Edo

The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), has declared Mr Roland Asoro of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the rescheduled Edo House of Assembly election for Orhionmhwon South Constituency seat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that INEC declared the April 11 State House of Assembly election inconclusive in 12 units in 4 wards.

According to Owin, Asoro of APC won the election that took place on April 18 with 11, 486 votes, to defeat Mr Friday Ogierake of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) who polled 8, 640 votes.
