At 3:40pm, Fashola cast his ballot, describing the exercise as peaceful. He said he was satisfied with the accreditation and voting process. He cautioned the people not to jump into conclusion on the success of the exercise, noting that INEC could only be judged after the whole process.

The governor appealed to the electoral commission to make up for its logistic shortfall by extending the voting period to enable more people exercise their franchise. He said there could have been irregularities in the organisation of the elections, but he said no human process had been perfect, cautioning against deliberate sabotage.

Elsewhere in Ikoyi, Lagos, the Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu and All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate yesterday proved her strength by defeating the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) embarrassingly in most of the polling units in Ward nine.

  • Tinubu denies sending text message endorsing Jonathan

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday denied sending any text asking electorates to vote for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Goodluck Jonathan.

Tinubu disclosed this while speaking with newsmen shortly after being accredited by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), at Ward 047 in Alausa. Tinubu assured that the issue will be adequately addressed in court.

The former Governor of Lagos State said, “I didn’t send any message. That’s part of the gimmicks and desperation of the ruling party when they pack a lot of fraudulent people in office trying to sabotage the right of people from exercising their civic duty.

“I didn’t authorize any network to send any message. That one we will discuss when we get to court. I cannot campaign today; I know what I’ve told my supporters, you all know the party I belong to and you know the candidate of that party. Do not believe in any text message from me asking you to do otherwise,” he said.

Tinubu said that he is committed to his party and nothing can make him compromise. “I stay firm; I stay credible; I stay resolved; I am determined and committed, if anybody sends you any fraudulent message, it is because they are coward, they know they are going to be defeated and that is why they want to resort to fraud.

“That is why they should not even be in government, the more reason they should be out, we have had enough of this. I have received several calls from people to verify the so-called text message but I have consistently denied that. It is disturbing, annoying and terrible that people will resort to fraud.

He confirmed that he has good relationship with the two major Presidential Candidates, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, insisting that his loyalty still remains with the PDP.

“You don’t live by rumours in politics. I don’t have reasons to leave PDP for now. You don’t change party through internet, it is a complete madness. When the deputy governor was decamping, he gave a statement to the press and he signed it.

“I am predicting victory for PDP and I will like to commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the introduction of card readers. This has made the elections more credible.

APC seeks more time for accreditation, voting

The All Progressives Congress on Saturday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to extend the time for accreditation and voting to make up for the delay caused by the use of card readers.

The party in a statement issued in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said extending the time for accreditation and voting will ensure that Nigerians who have queued up patiently at their polling units as early as 8:00am will not be disenfranchised.

It also urged INEC to recognize the letters from the various political party agents, since the commission was not able to fulfill its promise to accredit party agents, which used to be done by the parties themselves.

APC commended Nigerians for their patience in getting accredited, saying by waiting patiently to get accredited, they have shown an unprecedented commitment to the growth of democracy in the country.

The party said from the reports it has received from its field agents, it is clear that the card reader, as a tool to enhance the credibility of elections in the country, has so far proved effective, despite the delays.

”The card reader is a novel tool in our elections and naturally there will be some initial hiccups. We understand that the delays were due to the failure to remove the protective films on the lenses of many card readers, the poor network of some of the sim cards in the machines and the effect of jamming devices on the card readers, “it stated.

APC warned against the resort to manual accreditation in some parts of the country, where the card readers are being bypassed, saying it is against the electoral guidelines.

”People must continue to be patient until the card reader works,” the party said.

The party said: “Two other houses belonging to her supporters in the Ikot Ineme constituency were also destroyed in the arson by PDP thugs.

“The burning of Mrs. Thomson’s house came eight days after Rt. Hon. Okon Uwah, APC candidate for Ukanafun state constituency in the coming election and former deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly was assassinated by PDP thugs.

“In the last one month there have been more than three bloody attacks against APC members and as many acts of arson directed at their economic interest by PDP thugs.

“In early March, two separate bloody attacks against supporters of APC happened in ward 7 at Anua in Uyo with two near fatalities.

“Essien Udim, which Mrs. Thomson seeks to represent in the state House of Assembly on the platform of the APC, is the local government of Governor Godswill Akpabio.

“The renewed reign of terror in the state followed the most bellicose and inciting statements from leaders of the PDP in the state directed against members of the APC. Many of the statements have called for death or harm to those who are opposed to the PDP.”

APC Scandinavia calls for peaceful election

The All Progressive Congress (APC) chapter in Scandinavia has urged Nigerians to give peace a place in all activities as the much anticipated Presidential election holds today.

According to a statement made available by Kenneth Oguzie, Secretary, APC Scandinavia, “As a major event in the history of Nigeria unfolds in less than 24 hours, it is imperative that all stakeholders reach out to various groups and call for a peaceful, free and fair election.”

It further noted that the 2015 election is a very symbolic one as it heralds a new dawn and is an opportunity for Nigerians to break free from the shackles of the ruling party, who have brought this country to ground zero and would lead us to catastrophe if allowed to rule for a single more day.

“As the Diaspora arm of a party committed to peace and dialogue, APC Scandinavia urges all supporters to conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner and we condemn any sort of violence, intimidation and disorderly conduct from our members or that of the ruling party.

“We have come a long way and stakes are high in this election, as the largest economy in Africa, one of the top ten producers of oil globally and the most populous black Nation in the world, it is our responsibility to ensure we live up to the expectations of the International community.

“Dear citizens, we urge you to vote en masse for General Muhammadu Buhari and do the same for all APC candidates contesting for various arms of Government in a few weeks time.

“The time for change has come and we are privileged to be major actors and decision makers. Exercise your franchise, go out and vote and stay safe in general.

“Let us cruise to victory and let us take our country to where it ought to be,” the statement read.
