My opponents are no match -Adeola

Chairman, Public Accounts Committee in the House of Representatives, Hon. Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, is an experienced legislator whose 12 years stint as a lawmaker in Lagos State and at the National Assembly has made him a factor in the politics of his immediate constituency, Alimoso and Lagos State. In this interview with Assistant Editor, Remi Adelowo, the lawmaker spoke on how he won the ticket to represent Lagos West in the Senate, his chances at the polls and other

YOU defeated two experienced politicians to clinch the APC Lagos West Senatorial District ticket; how did you pull that off?

From my point of view, they are all tested politicians, loyal party men who have distinguished themselves in different fields of endeavour, and who have contributed immensely towards the development of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). What I believed worked for me is that in the last 12 years of my life, I have been involved in legislative business. And the position we are vying for is still the same business of legislature. If you look at the two experienced politicians, they have always been involved in the executive arm of government. None of them have had the opportunity of serving in the legislature. 12 years of legislative experience is not something you can just wish away.

What are you offering to the people of Lagos West, because presently, you are represent ting just one local government in the House of Reps, while you would be representing 10 local governments if you make it to the Senate?

This is the largest senatorial district in Nigeria, and it also constitutes 51 percent of the entire Lagos population.  So, that shows how big this senatorial district is. As regards what I would be offering to the people of Lagos West, part of what I have put forward is to always organise a senatorial forum on a quarterly basis. In that forum, I intend to ensure that all issues pertaining to the senatorial level is brought to the table for discussion.  I am of the firm opinion that if that is done, everybody who is a stakeholder in the senatorial zone will be aware of what is coming in terms of constituency projects, in terms of the bills that is to be discussed and how the senatorial zone can benefit from it, and in terms of other fringe benefits like employment slots and other things. I want everybody to be carried along from the point of representation. Since democracy is a government of the people by the people and for the people, that is the only way.

The PDP in Lagos is saying that your party has not done much for the people and so wants to give your party a red card in 2015, and in your own case, you will be contesting with the same man you contested against last time, why do you think people should still vote for you and your party in the next election?

We are all living witnesses of the impact the progressive party that has been in charge of Lagos since 1999 has made in terms of people-oriented policies and programmes, which are too numerous to mention.  The truth is that PDP is just grandstanding and seeking undeserved attention. Don’t forget that Lagos is the fifth biggest economy in Africa and it is the most populated state in Nigeria. The local government, Alimosho Federal Constituency, which I currently represent, is bigger than Bayelsa and Yobe States in terms of population.  Any fair and objective person knows that Lagos State has moved several notches higher than where it was pre-1999, all thanks to the efforts of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Fashola legacies. Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode (APC governorship candidate) would build upon this when he becomes the governor by God’s grace in 2015. Lagos is the fifth biggest economy, the fifth biggest city in Africa that needs massive infrastructures to compete with the best cities in the world. This is the first state under Asiwaju Tinubu that pioneered IPP project to tackle the power problem in the state. But what happened? The PDP-led federal government truncated the plan for very selfish reasons. Now, PDP states are building turbines, so you can see the double standards. PDP states are there for comparison with Lagos and like I said earlier, anyone who is objective knows that Lagos has changed and changed for good. I don’t know what they are coming to offer. The person they are presenting as their candidate has no experience to show. He has not been in government; he has not held any position as far as governance is concerned. What other thing can he refer to as his experience that places him better than somebody who served for over 30 years in government, and rose to the position of Permanent Secretary/ Accountant General of Lagos State? That goes to show that we are not bringing out just anybody. Coming to mine, that I am contesting against somebody I contested against in 2011; well it is a game of politics. But the position is crystal clear.  Lagos is a mega city. It is the most sophisticated state in Nigeria.  And people that reside here know their left from their right. A mediocre cannot go and represent Lagos. With due respect to other candidates who are contesting, I believe that when you are contesting elsewhere, you can have your way, but when you are contesting in a state like Lagos, you must know your onions. I am not deterred; I am not bothered, because I believe in myself. I believe in the quality of representation that I can offer my people.  And I believe in what I have in stock going for me, which is my 12 years legislative experience. I have been opportuned to chair one of the most strategic committees, which is the only constitutionally-recognised in the House of Representatives, the Public Accounts Committee. And I have demonstrated to the whole world what I can do at that level. I am not a greenhorn and I know that people will listen and listen carefully, and judge me by my performance in the lower chamber and also the experience I have in forming their opinion in voting for who will be representing them in the Senate.

Lawyer seeks police protection over alleged threat to life

IN Akure, Ondo State based Lawyer, Charles Titiloye, who reportedly escaped attack by suspected killers last weekend, has petitioned the Ondo State Police Commissioner over the attempt on his life. The activist is seeking protection by the police in the discharge of his legal duties.

Titiloye is currently handling some vital cases including that of increment in court fees by the state government and another involving two lawmakers who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Besides, the lawyer is challenging the imposition of tenement rate on newspapers circulating in the state by the state government. Titiloye argued that the move is aimed at gagging the press in the state.

In the petition, Titiloye said all the cases he filed were aimed at protecting the rule of law, fundamental human rights and the institution of justice in the state. He alleged that the state government is disturbed by his actions and as such, has allegedly deployed all means to frustrate the hearing of the cases.

“I have many other cases pending in courts involving agencies of government on the protection of human rights and good governance in the country. In 2012, I was the counsel of Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), the gubernatorial candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) at the state governorship election petition tribunal.

Apart from these cases, I am a strong public commentator on the need for good governance based on the rule of law and protection of the rights of the masses. I am also an active member of APC,” he said.

Titiloye urged the Commissioner of Police to grant him Police protection considering the threat to his life and the attempt made to eliminate him last Saturday.

It would be recalled that the former Akure NBA Secretary last week Saturday narrowly escaped death when suspected killers reportedly trailed him from his Hospital Road, Akure Chambers to a point near Sacred Heart Cathedral in the state capital.

The lawyer had to abandon his car and run to the nearby Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral Church for refuge. He was said to have been accompanied to the police station by a Catholic priest, Rev. Father Anslem Ologunwa, to report the incident.

  • APC: next year will be better

APC: next year will be better

Next year’s Christmas will be better, the All Progressives Congress (APC) promised Nigerians yesterday.

The party that is hopeful of defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next February’s general election and control the Federal Government urged Nigerians to endure the economic hardship they are facing because it is about to end.

The party stated its position in a message by the National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. He assured Nigerians that this will be their last Christmas celebration under the bondage of insecurity, corruption, unemployment, widespread hopelessness and poor leadership.

He added: ‘’Many cannot travel home due to fears of kidnapping, ethno-religious crisis and insurgency, depending on which part of the country they are from. Many cannot celebrate due to the effects of the economic downturn, as manifested in weakening Naira and falling oil prices, both exacerbated by widespread corruption.

‘’Many will mark the holidays in darkness as the country’s public power supply seems to have fallen in a direct proportion to the huge funds ostensibly pumped into the sector in the past few years. Many will be stuck on the roads that have become clogged due to their poor state.

‘’While there is no magic wand to solve the myriad of problems facing our country in one fell swoop, an APC government will begin to positively impact on the citizenry within its first few months at the helm, to such an extent that Nigerians will have a better Christmas celebration in 2015,’’ it said.

The APC said Nigerians hold the power to bringing about the much-needed change, hence they should vote wisely during the February 2015 general elections so they can install a government that will address, squarely,  the challenges facing the country.

‘’We have, through our manifesto, entered into a honest social contract with Nigerians. But we are aware that we cannot do it alone, hence we need the consent and participation of the people.

  • ‘Only APC can liberate Kebbi’

A group in Kebbi State, under the aegis of APC Youth Forum, has said only the All Progressives Congress (APC) government will liberate the people from the ruling People Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) non-performance.

The group noted that the ruling party in the state lacked focus and should be changed.

In a statement by the group’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Alhaji Jamilu Umar Galadima, it alleged that the PDP administration had destroyed the state, particularly civil service.

It said: “The people must change the ruling party in the state because its lacks focus. It must be changed by the electorate in the 2015 elections.

    •Soldiers withdrawn from outfit

    •APC faults move

The Federal Government has withdrawn soldiers from the Oyo State government’s security outfit, Operation Burst.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it was a deliberate effort to allow the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unleash thuggery on the state.

The party, in a statement yesterday, said the soldiers’ withdrawal would sabotage the efforts of Governor Abiola Ajimobi in sustaining peace in the state.

Signed by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare,  the party’s statement alleged that some influential PDP members in the state were behind the Federal Government’s order.

It reads: “The decision of the PDP-controlled Federal Government to order the military authority to withdraw their men from Operation Burst is, to say the least, a grand plan to pave way for the nefarious activities of thugs and criminally-minded persons in Oyo State.

“Without mincing words, we are worried that a government at the centre, which has failed to curtail insurgency in some parts of the country can succumb to the pressure from its surrogates in one of the most peaceful states in the country to sabotage result-yielding security efforts by a government, which values the lives and property of its people.

“But for reasons traceable to their inherent failure in the business of governance coupled with a bid to win the 2015 elections at all costs, the PDP elements would not be comfortable with the newly found peace in the pacesetter state.

“With this development, they have further confirmed their culpability in the pocket of politically-motivated violence in some parts of Ibadan recently.

“We call on well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on President Goodluck Jonathan to reverse the order and desist from further actions capable of exposing the people to insecurity, political violence and social unrest.

“We call on residents to remain calm and go about their businesses without fear.”

  • Produce result of your primaries, says aspirant

An All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the Osun East National Assembly election, Sola Lawal, has challenged another aspirant, Senator Babajide Omoworare, to produce evidence of his victory in the party primaries.

The primaries, which reportedly gave victory to Lawal with 17 votes as against Omoworare’s three, took place at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Osogbo, where ex-governor Isiaka Adeleke and Senator Sola Adeyeye also emerged victorious for the Osun West and Central seats.

But Omoworare, said he, rather than Lawal, won the polls.

Lawal, in a statement, however stated that he holds the popular mandate to contest the election, describing Omoworare’s claim of victory as “patently fraudulent”.

The aspirant urged Omoworare to state where, when and who voted in the primaries that allegedly produced him as the candidate.

He said: “As for me, the modified primaries sanctioned by Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the party, took place at the Banquet Hall of the Government House on December 3.”

    ‘Aliero has not dumped APC’

The All Progressive Congress(APC) in Kebbi State  has clarified that  former Governor Adamu Aliero is still achieftain of the party.

The Publicity Secretary,  Alhaji Sani Dododo, said the media report that the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has left the party is in bad faith.

He attributed the rumour to mischief makers, who are bent on discrediting the eminent politician. The party official said the image of Aliero cannot be dented by political foes.

Dododo said: “The rumor is not true. It is a mear speculations coming from the opposition to draw attention to their side because they know that the APC is a party to beat in Kebbi State.”

He urged party members to shun rumors emanating from the social media, saying that they are subjective.
