We have rooms to accommodate all, APC assures defectors

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured newly defected members of the party’s readiness to provide full integration and support within its fold.

This assurance was made in a statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on Friday in Abuja, following the official defection of Senator Kawu Sumaila-led New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) members from Kano State.

Senator Sumaila, who represents Kano South in the Senate, alongside former Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Baffa Bichi, and other former and serving lawmakers from both the National and State Assemblies, were formally received into the APC by the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Thursday in Abuja.

Welcoming the defectors, Morka stated, “Our great party applauds this decision and assures the incoming leaders and their teeming supporters of effective accommodation in the APC family.”

“We are confident that this development, a clear endorsement of the focused leadership of President Bola Tinubu, will further galvanize support for the administration’s unprecedented multi-sector reforms, and positions the Party for overwhelming victory in Kano state in the upcoming 2027 general elections.”

Meanwhile, sources within the opposition NNPP in Kano State hinted that plans have been concluded for a mass defection of party members into APC in May.

  • Humpty Dumpty PDP

    Humpty Dumpty PDP

To laugh or to cry — the Titanic PDP sink in Delta?  No shred of doubt: nothing like it before in Nigeria: a state ruling party of 26 years, uprooting itself and throwing itself at the federal ruling party!

The APC is, of course, upbeat and happy.  The PDP, miserable — and rightly so, though many of its bitter members, in coming days, would gripe with sour grapes.

But the political party system?  Not so upbeat. Defections — into any side — is the partisan equivalent of rubbing Peter to pay Paul.  Such hardly powers organic growth, talk less of development, the only way the party system can deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

PDP current Delta debacle!  What past crimes might the PDP have committed to bring such upon itself?

As usual, no tears from Hardball — but just a grim lesson, from history, to the APC too.  During the PDP halcyon days of power, President Olusegun Obasanjo did not blink how he subverted opposition parties.

He suborned the All People’s Party (APP) national chairman as political adviser, at a time APP was the leading opposition party in numbers, if not in sheer dynamism.  That was clearly the forte of the smaller but much more vibrant Alliance for Democracy (AD).  In no time APP ended in PDP’s great tummy!

For daring to make such a row, AD’s fate was corporate death.  After 2003, with PDP poaching some of its National and state assembly legislators, and sending five out of its six South West governors to political Golgotha, AD progressively could not even win sole council chair elections anywhere!

Is that the putative fate now staring PDP in the face?  Not the best of times!  Still, it’s Karma serving the former federal ruling party the cold breakfast it had, with cold relish, served others!

Which is why the APC itself — now all flush with new flesh — must learn from PDP’s pitfall.  Crowing over opposition flank come to swell its ranks is no wiser than the old folly of excited screeches, while PDP subverted others.  Karma’s gate is ever wide open!

The only way to slam shut that gate, and cut the cycle of Karma, is the present ruling party committing  itself anew to the wellbeing of the people.  In truth, mortar for mortar, it has chalked off more accomplishments in 10 years than PDP did in 16.  But such are the present challenges it must work overtime to lift the people.

No sympathy for PDP for ending up in own dug pit.  But APC must avoid such a future pit too.  Let the people be the exclusive kings and queens of its policies and programmes.

Meanwhile, can all of the king’s horses and all the king’s men put the PDP Humpty Dumpty together again?

  • Delta mass defection to APC painful, shocking, Damagum laments

Delta mass defection to APC painful, shocking, Damagum laments

The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, has expressed deep disappointment over the wave of defections of party and state government officials in Delta State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as both painful and shocking.

“It’s their decision, but the pain remains with us—not for personal reasons, but because of the immense support we’ve given Delta State. From backing the current governor to supporting his predecessor, who also ran as our Vice Presidential candidate, we least expected this kind of betrayal,” Damagum lamented.

He made the remarks at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja during the presentation of the party’s Certificate of Return to Architect Jude Ezenwafor, the sole aspirant and candidate for the November 8 Anambra State governorship election.

Damagum, joined by the acting National Secretary, Architect Setonji Koshoedo, National Legal Adviser Alhaji Kamaldeen Ajibade, and National Organizing Secretary Captain Bature Umar (rtd), also expressed concern over the ruling APC’s political maneuvers, which he said were destabilizing the opposition and creating a difficult environment for the PDP.

“You may have your own tactics but you cannot outplay God, we leave our faith in the hands of God and we believe He will help us out of this great situation,” he stated.

According to Damagum who assured the PDP governorship candidate of victory, the extremely reduced interest in struggling for the PDP governorship ticket that Ezenwafor won as an unopposed candidate has also manifested such first-time peaceful process that indicate very bright prospects.

“For the first time, a PDP governorship candidate emerged in Anambra in a rancour-free process and this is also the first time that we got a state executive that emerged from the state congress without a single court order; this shows that we are now getting it right in Anambra.

“You see, if God wants to help you, he takes out all the thorns along the way and I know that we now have one united party in Anambra today; your commitment, belief and sincerity would see us through this election, victory would be yours.

“You have started well, from the evolution of the state executive to your emergence as our candidate, I think what you need to do is to go back and consolidate by going to make sure that everyone comes back on board; I assure you of our total support and commitment,” he told Ezenwafor.

Speaking further on the mass media’s interest in hearing PDP’s response to the developments in Delta state, Damagum emphasized that there is need for party members to renew their hope in God towards overcoming the APC threat in 2027 general elections.

“I know that Nigerians are eager to hear from us about what happened to the PDP in Delta state: it is very sad and unfortunate because to me, if there’s any state that should think that way, it should not have been Delta, because the party has been very magnanimous to them but I thank God that they have not said that the party did anything wrong to them other than good.

“All the same, this is a party that has seen more than that, but ii’s still standing and I want to use this opportunity to say, we’ll take over our structures immediately by setting up a caretaker team; we are still taking stocks and we will do that immediately.

“I also want to enjoin our members, both in Delta and other parts of the country, I want to remind us about what happened in 2023: the PDP can still make it!.

“Peter Obi had no governor but he muscled those votes that he muscled so, this election in 2027 will not be about how many governors you have or how many (party) leaders; it’s about Tinubu versus Nigerians and they will give him the result before 12 noon on voting day because you can coerce, persuade, and intimidate our members to support you but the ordinary man is feeling the pinch and the decision is his.

“So I want to use this opportunity to tell Nigerians that it is their election, it is APC versus Nigerians; it is not APC versus any governor or Senator but APC versus Nigerians.

“I want to urge all of us to close ranks and rescue ourselves from this hardship that is inflicted on us by design, not any coincidence; policies are meant for people, not animals but they made policies that are not yielding good results for the ordinary people.

“People should not be deterred, we will experience a lot of challenges but there is no challenge that is insurmountable; I thank God that we are all people of faith, we know that there is a limit to whatever one can do other than what God has designed,” Damagum stated.

In his speech, Ezenwafor who was accompanied by his wife, members of in PDP State Working Committee Anambra state and campaign officials assured Damagum that he was going home to consolidate and win the November 8 governorship election, adding that governors from other states across Nigeria will soon be coming to learn governance strategies from his exemplary leadership in Anambra State.

“After my elections, all other governors will come and take lessons, especially on the way to do their own security; as a former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on security, I will not take things for granted.

“I appreciate your fatherly support, but I want to tell all of us here that PDP Anambra State is a PDP state; all of us contesting the governorship election in Anambra State today, including the serving governor were once governorship aspirants within the PDP but as a bridge-builder, I will consolidate and move forward,” Ezenwafor stated.

  • Edo North APC leaders endorse Senator Oshiomhole for second term

Edo North APC leaders endorse Senator Oshiomhole for second term

In a remarkable show of political unity and strategic resolve, the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Edo North Senatorial District has thrown its full weight behind Senator Adams Oshiomhole for a second term in the Nigerian Senate.

The unanimous endorsement came during a high-level caucus meeting held in Iyamho, Oshiomhole’s hometown, shortly after a critical security summit with Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The dual-purpose gathering underscored both the security priorities of the region and the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Media Assistant to the Minister of Regional Development, Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, the endorsement effectively closes the door to internal contention over the Edo North Senate ticket within the APC.

The meeting brought together prominent political heavyweights and stakeholders from across Edo North, including the Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh; former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba; APC elder, Chief Francis Alimikhena; South-South political strategist, Dr. Blessing Agbomhere; federal lawmaker, Hon. Dekeri Anamero; grassroots mobilizer, Chief Abu Millionaire; political figure, Chief Ohimai; and development technocrat, Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, among others.

It was Engr. Momoh who captured the mood of the gathering when, during deliberations, he posed the decisive question on the continuity of Senator Oshiomhole’s legislative stewardship.

The response was instant and deafening, a thunderous and unanimous chorus of approval that left no room for doubt.

In a symbolic statement that echoed through the hall and beyond, party leaders declared in one voice: “No vacancy in Edo North Senate seat.”

The endorsement is seen as a strategic move to ensure political stability, legislative continuity, and enhanced influence for Edo North at the national level. Since his election to the Senate, Oshiomhole, a former Edo State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the APC, has been a vocal advocate for the region, known for his fiery rhetoric and active presence in legislative debates.

Party leaders described him as a “pillar of representation” whose re-election would consolidate gains already made and ensure that the district retains a strong voice in Abuja.

“Senator Oshiomhole has demonstrated unflinching commitment to Edo North and national development. This endorsement is a reaffirmation of our trust in his leadership,” said one senior APC chieftain at the event.

Before shifting to political matters, the APC leaders had met with Governor Okpebholo to tackle urgent security issues affecting several communities in Etsako, Owan, and Akoko-Edo.

The meeting culminated in the adoption of a comprehensive security roadmap backed by both state and federal initiatives.

Key points included increased surveillance, community policing support, and inter-agency coordination to stem the tide of recent criminal activity.

Governor Okpebholo pledged his administration’s full commitment to implementing the agreed strategies, stating, “we must secure our homes before we can talk about progress. Today’s summit has laid a strong foundation for that.”

Delta APC begins registration of new members amid mass PDP defections

The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the distribution of registration booklets to facilitate the formal onboarding of new members into the party.

This move came in response to a recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, highlighted by the high-profile defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the entire Delta State PDP structure on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

In an official announcement, the APC directed all Local Government Chairmen to collect the registration booklets—a strategic step towards integrating the influx of defectors.

The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo Esq., underscored the significance of the registration exercise in strengthening the party’s grassroots structure and accommodating the growing number of new entrants.

It reads, “The registration of new members is a crucial step towards ensuring they are fully integrated into the party structure. We encourage all new members to visit their local ward chairmen and complete the registration formalities to formalize their membership.”

The APC leadership also said that the integration of these new members is a key part of the party’s vision for a “brighter future” for Delta state.

    6. Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto State)

Wamakko joined the APC in 2014 during his tenure as Governor. He was among the early defectors whose moves helped shape the APC’s victory in the 2015 general elections.

    7. Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State)

Ahmed, Governor from 2011 to 2019, defected to APC in 2014 with Bukola Saraki during the famous “political tsunami” in Kwara. Though he returned to PDP later, the defection during his tenure was pivotal.

  • Group urges APC leaders to allow open nomination, fair chairmanship primaries in Agege

Group urges APC leaders to allow open nomination, fair chairmanship primaries in Agege

Ahead of the July 2025 local government elections in Lagos state, a civil society group, Concern Group Initiative (CGI), has called on stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to guarantee a transparent and fair nomination process for the Agege local government chairmanship race.

The appeal came amid growing concerns over alleged political intimidation and the imposition of candidates within the party.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, CGI urged the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and other APC leaders in Agege to step in and ensure that all qualified aspirants have access to nomination forms and are allowed to contest freely without undue interference.

“We are tired of political impositions,” said Mr. Dele Olajuwon, leader of the group. “Let interested and qualified candidates contest. Let the people decide—not a handful of powerful individuals.”

The group also raised alarm over increasing reports of intimidation by party elites and condemned the rumoured endorsement of Abdulganiyu Obasa—son of the Speaker—as the APC’s preferred chairmanship candidate.

Speaking further, CGI’s publicity secretary, Onakoya, criticised the alleged endorsement, warning that democracy in Agege is at risk if such undemocratic practices continue.

“We are calling for an open and fair process where all qualified candidates can pick up nomination forms without the shadow of nepotism looming over them,” he said.

Mr Adebayo Ogunleye, a prominent member of the group stressed that leadership should be based on merit and community service, not family ties.

“Agege deserves a leader who understands its unique challenges and is committed to genuine service—not someone installed because of their last name,” Ogunleye added.

He urged APC officials to uphold transparency and inclusivity throughout the electoral process.

Ogunleye warned that political favouritism would not only disenfranchise the people but also erode trust in the party’s democratic values.

Lagos council poll: APC chairmanship aspirants to pay N5.5m nomination fees

All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed the nomination and administrative fees for aspirants vying for seats in the July 12 local government election in Lagos State.

The fees are contained in the party’s election guidelines, jointly signed by Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi and Dr Adeola Jokomba, APC chairman and secretary.

The party in the guidelines released yesterday, said chairmanship aspirants would pay N5 million as nomination fee and an additional N500,000 as administrative fee.

According to the party, female chairmanship aspirants are to pay N2.5 million as nomination fee and the same N500,000 as administrative fee.

APC said aspirants below the age of 40 years would have 50 per cent discount on their nomination fee,  but would  pay same administrative fee of N500,000.

The party, however, waived nomination fee for aspirants with disabilities, while charging an administration fee of N250,000.

“For the councillorship position, male aspirants will pay N1 million for nomination form and N100,000 administrative fee, while female aspirants will pay N250,000 for nomination form and N100,000 as administrative fee.

“Youths aspiring for councillorship positions will have a 50 per cent discount for nomination form fee, while the administrative fee remains the same.

“Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) will collect the nomination forms free for councillorship seats, while administrative fee is N50,000.

“There shall not be a separate fee for the vice chairman. These fees shall be paid by way of bank draft in favour of All Progressives Congress, Lagos State,” the party said.

Giving more details, the party says nomination form for chairmanship position shall be supported by five registered members, who are registered voters in all the aspirants’ wards, local governments or LCDAs.

It noted that for the councillorship seats, the nomination form shall be supported by 20 registered members, who are registered voters in the aspirants’ wards.

The party said all aspirants must be Nigerian citizens in addition to possessing other qualifications and meeting other conditions for the election.

An aspirant must be educated up to at least school certificate level or its equivalent. A higher qualification will be an added advantage.

“For council and LCDA chairmanship, the aspirant has to attain the age of 30, while for councillorship, the aspirant has to attain the age of 25.

“All aspirants are to submit evidence of membership of the party. Aspirants are to submit a demonstrable evidence of active party support.

“Aspirants must provide a portfolio of loyalty to the party. All aspirants must sign the party’s Code of Conduct.

“Only aspirants cleared by the Screening Committee shall be eligible to stand election at the party’s primaries,” the party said.

According to the APC, any party office holder interested in contesting for an elective office (whether party office or office in a general election) shall resign and leave office 30 days prior to the date of election or party primary.

It said all aspirants “shall comply with constitutional provisions and requirements applicable to the public office they seek to contest for.”
