Ex-Gov Buni heads APC committee on ‘marginalised’ five National Deputies

All Progressives Congress (APC) has set up a committee to work out modality on how to bring in new members into the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The decision followed a presentation by Lady Omorede Osifo, Edo born Deputy National Treasurer, in which she drew attention to the plight of what she described as five marginalised national deputies, during the NEC meeting in Abuja last week.

The committee is headed by the erstwhile Yobe Governor, Mala Buni is to resolve the protracted grievance.

Among those in attendance were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who was accompanied by all members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including the Deputy National Chairmen (North and South), National Secretary, Legal Adviser, Treasurer, Organising Secretary, Women Leader, Youth Leader and leader of Persons Living with disabilities amongst others.

Also present were APC Governors, led by Hope Uzodimma (Imo), who serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

Multiple sources at the meeting disclosed that Lady Osifo, who is the APC Deputy National Treasurer, alleged marginalisation of some deputies at the meeting presided over by President Tinubu.

She moved a motion asking President Tinubu and the leadership of the party to consider including all national deputies in the NWC as against the norm in which five Deputies are members of the NWC while five are not.

Tinubu reportedly hailed her for bringing the issue to the  front burner and immediately mandated that the issue be looked into promptly.

According to one of the sources: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has demonstrated numerous times that he is a leader who believes in fairness immediately swung into action by discussing with the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Ganduje and other leaders on the way forward.

“Thereafter, a committee was put together headed by the former governor of Yobe State, Mala Buni to look into the criteria for bringing new members into the National Working Committee as well as National Executive Committee of the ruling party the All Progressives Congress.”

The sources added that the party leaders present at the meeting were grateful to Mr President for taking prompt action and were full of admiration for the “Edo State amazon” for the wonderful presentation she made.”

The issue of the five “marginalised national deputies” have been lingering for several years.

The aggrieved officials are miffed that they were excluded from the mainstream fold of the National Working Committee (NWC) since the current leadership was constituted and inaugurated three years ago.

The five deputies who have reportedly lodged complaints to the NWC are Bar Ibtahim Salawu Deputy National Legal Adviser; Osifo, Deputy National Treasurer; Jamalu Kabiru, Deputy National Youth Leader; Olufemi Akpedeyi, Deputy National Auditor, and Christopher Akpan, Deputy National Welfare Secretary.

Part of their complaints is that while the national leadership had rebuffed entreaties to include them in the NWC, other five deputies, comprising the Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, Deputy National Financial Secretary, Hamma-Adama Ali Kumo, Deputy National Organizing Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko and Deputy National Women Leader, Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, were incorporated.

However, dismissing their claim of injustice as baseless, a member of the NWC said their exclusion was a constitutional issue, explaining that the deputies included in the NWC were products of a motion moved and endorsed during the party’s last elective convention in Abuja.

While advising the aggrieved officials to follow constitutional methods to perfect their inclusion, the national officer said: “This issue has been on the front burner since our inauguration. They have taken their complaints to the then national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu and to several other places, but they have been advised to follow constitutional options to redress their exclusion. If they are so passionate about it, where were they when they moved the motion at the national convention ground to include themselves in the amendment?”

Citing Section 12.4 of the certified true copy of the party’s constitution that specified the composition of the NWC, the member of the national leadership insisted that the numerical strength of leadership currently stood at 25.

He listed them as the National Chairman, two Deputy National Chairmen from North and South, National Secretary, his Deputy, six National Vice, referred to zonal chairmen, National Legal Adviser, National Welfare, National Treasurer, Financial Secretary, National Organising and Deputy, National Publicity Secretary as well as Deputy, National Women Leader and Deputy, National Youth Leader among others.

Notwithstanding the explanations, a source sympathetic to the excluded five has admonished the party chieftains to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and equitable.

He also said that the APC constitution allows for NEC to carry out functions of the National Convention in-between National convention. So the NEC can include the Five Deputies in the NWC pending ratification by the National convention

APC reconciliation: NC Forum drops agitations, embraces reconciliation

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has endorsed the vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu and the National Executive Council’s (NEC) ratification of Abdullahi Ganduje as the Party’s National Chairman.

The Forum noted that its declaration was necessary, as it has set aside its initial opposition to Ganduje’s chairmanship, recognizing the circumstances that led to his emergence.

The Forum recalled that its initial opposition to former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s leadership stemmed from its insistence that the North Central geopolitical zone should complete the tenure of former Chairman Abdullahi Adamu which led it to seek legal redress.

The Forum explained that on October 16, 2024, it suspended its demand for Ganduje’s removal, awaiting the party’s NEC decision.

On Thursday, it however, pointed out that with the NEC’s ratification of the national chairmanship zoning to the North-West, it has now acknowledged Ganduje’s position as validated.

Reacting to the NEC meeting outcome, the Forum, in a statement on Thursday by its Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in the 2023 election, announced its decision to drop all agitations and align with the party’s national leadership.

It also urged aggrieved members to embrace the reconciliation efforts initiated by the President and party leadership.

Zazzaga affirmed the Forum’s support for Ganduje in reconciling aggrieved party members and called for peace and unity between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Sen. George Akume.

Zazzaga said: “As loyal party members interested in the progress of the APC, we agree with all the decisions taken at the NEC meeting. We endorse the vote of confidence passed on President Bola Tinubu and the national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

“The NEC is the highest decision making organ of the party and the NEC has passed a vote of confidence on the national chairman.

“We respect the decision of Mr President and the NEC. As a result of that, we have decided to stop all agitations concerning the leadership and other issues in the APC.

“We are urging all members of the party to support President Bola Tinubu and the national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje. We also seek the support of all North-Central stakeholders for the SGF, Senator George Akume as the leader of the party in the zone.

“We recognize Senator Akume as our father in the North-Central. Having decided to stop all agitations, there is nothing left than to unite ourselves in the interest of the zone and to give massive support to President Bola Tinubu in all his policies and in future elections.

“We are also praying to God to give the National Chairman the wisdom to carry everybody along and to reconcile all aggrieved members.

“We also urge the Government of Benue State to respect the authority of the SGF, Senator George Akume as the leader of the party in the North-Central.

“As stakeholders of the North-Central, we believe that everybody should unite and be on the same page to work for the progress and development of the zone”.

    • APC NEC endorses President’s policies
    • I inherited N8.9b debt, says Ganduje

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday promised to work harder for the country after the vote of confidence passed in him by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am happy with your vote of confidence, and I accept it.

“It is a challenge to do more work; we will vigorously pursue our sovereignty in food security, investment and development,” he told party leaders.

The 13th NEC meeting at the party’s National Secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) was preceded by the National Caucus meeting on Tuesday night hosted at the State House by the President.

The NEC is the second-highest organ of the party after the national convention.

It takes major decisions for the party in between conventions.

Also at the meeting presided over by the National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and former Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.

The meeting was the second to be held under the Tinubu Administration and the first under Ganduje as chairman.

It was a brainstorming session where the NEC reviewed the party activities in the last 20 months and evolved strategies for resolving mounting challenges.

President Tinubu urged the party to intensify efforts on reconciliation to end conflicts.

A seven-man panel chaired by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni was set up to review the NEC membership to expand the structure.

Also, after passing a vote of confidence in Ganduje and the Progressive Governors’ Forum led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, the NEC resolved to zone the party’s national chairmanship to the Northwest.

The decision may foreclose the agitation for the slot by the Northcentral APC.

Ganduje hails from Kano in the Northwest.

NEC also approved the audited financial statements for  2022 and 2023, ratified the 2024 budget and approved the 2025 budget.

Ganduje, who gave a report on party’s activities, said he inherited N8.9 billion debt from the previous NWC, led by Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

As the President entered the hall, party leaders sang the caucus anthem: “On your mandate, we shall stand” and “No vacancy in Aso Villa.”

The President, who expressed his determination to work harder for the country, said the economy was on the path of recovery.

He said the commendation by the party’s second-highest decision-making organ was a call for more hard work.

He assured that he would not fail the party faithful.

President Tinubu said: “I am happy with food prices coming down, especially as Ramadan approaches.

“The sun is high, and the sky is bright outside. While the rest of the world unravels, we see growth in Nigeria.

“We are seeing a gradual return to stability. We are seeing improvements. I thank you, governors.”

The President, who thanked Nigerians for their belief and trust in the APC, promised to work assiduously with other arms of government to ensure the greater good for the greatest number of Nigerians.

He said: “I’m grateful to all Nigerians for the electoral successes recorded from one state to the other.

“Governors, you have embraced these changes, and I thank the leadership of our party. I also thank members of the National Assembly for expeditiously considering the budget.

“We can only build the party on a progressive platform to deliver good service to Nigerians.”

The President commended the NWC for its performance, urging them to put up measures to end crises in some states.

President Tinubu stressed: “The NWC is doing a very good job; I am pleased with them. However, there are a few conflicts in the various states.

“Let’s set up committees to look into the lingering problems in the states and appeal to these party leaders in various states to please be calm and be collaborative.”

Uzodimma, who moved the confidence vote motion, highlighted the accomplishments recorded under President Tinubu in the areas of infrastructure development, security, improved foreign exchange, improvement in food production and the student loan scheme.

He said: “If a dancer dances well, the best thing to do is to encourage him by supporting and clapping for him to enable him to dance more and do it better.”

Former National Chairman and ex-governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomole, who seconded the motion, said the President’s second term chances are bright.

Akpabio moved the motion for a confidence vote in Ganduje and the NWC.

He reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment and support for President Tinubu in tackling economic challenges.

Akpabio said: “The Senate will expeditiously pass bills that will enhance our national development, improve the economy and redirect our national pathway.”

Tajudeen commended the President for his vision and courage in making critical decisions, which are pivotal for developmental efforts.

Other leaders at the meeting were Governors Hyacinth Alia (Benue State), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Uba Sani (Kaduna),  Usman Namadi (Jigawa), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Mohammed Bago (Niger),  Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq (Kwara) and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Patricia Obila Oyinemachi.

Also at the meeting were Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Minister of Defence (State) Bello Matawalle, former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari, Minister of Budget and National Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu; Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, former Niger governor Abubakar Sani Bello, former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello, Senator Simon Lalong and party secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was absent. His absence was attributed to the short notice, which he received on Tuesday.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who could not attend, sent his regrets from South Africa through his aide, Ade Ipaye.

Former Ekiti governor Kayode Fayemi attended the caucus meeting on Tuesday but was absent at NEC.

He was among those criticising the party for not holding a NEC meeting since September 2023.

Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi – estranged members of the party who were nevertheless invited, did not show up.

I inherited N8.9 billion debt, says Ganduje

Ganduje said the NEC under his leadership inherited N8,987,874,663 debt from the previous party leadership.

He said: “The current NWC inherited debts and legal liabilities to the total tune of N8,987,874,663 from all the cases, ranging from legal engagements during the pre-election matters, election cases and appeals for legislative, governorship and presidential elections.”

The chairman, however, said the National Legal Adviser, Prof. Abdul Kareem Kana (SAN), has been making efforts towards reducing the debt burden through dialogue and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Ganduje said: “We still passionately appeal to NEC to intervene accordingly. It is important to note that some of our accounts are still garnished.”

Minister congratulates Ganduje on his tenure extension

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Ata, congratulated Ganduje on the extension of his tenure till 2026.

Ata said the decision reflected the party’s unwavering confidence in Ganduje’s leadership.

The minister, in a statement by his aide, Seyi Olorunsola, noted that since assuming the role of National Chairman on August 3, 2023, Ganduje has demonstrated exceptional leadership, steering the APC to remarkable successes in various elections.

“Under Ganduje’s guidance, the party has achieved significant victories in off-cycle governorship elections, notably in Edo, Ondo, Kogi, and Imo States.

“These triumphs underscore the strategic direction and unity he has instilled within the party.

“In Edo, the APC candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, secured a decisive win in the September 2024 governorship election, a testament to the party’s growing influence in the region.

“Similarly, in Ondo, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s re-election in November 2024 further solidified the APC’s dominance in the Southwest.

“The party’s success extended to Kogi State, with Usman Ododo emerging victorious in the November 2023 governorship poll, and in Imo, where Governor Uzodimma was re-elected for a second term.”

Giving a further insight, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, addressed concerns over the absence of some key party leaders at caucus and the NEC meetings.

He said full attendance is never expected at such gatherings, insisting every member of both the caucus and NEC were duly invited.

Morka said: “As far as I know, I have never known a caucus meeting of our party or NEC meeting of our party to be attended a hundred percent by all members. I am not sure there is any political party where you have 100 percent attendance for such meetings.

“Be rest assured that every member of the Caucus and NEC was invited. The list of members today was comprehensive. As a matter of fact, we enlarged the list for the meeting today. We had more members invited than we did previously.”

He dismissed former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s claims that the APC’s internal structures were dysfunctional and asserted that all organs of the party remain active and effective.

He said: “All organs of the party are working. What the former governor of Kaduna State said – there is a difference between party men and people who speak because they have a grievance.”

“Grievance-driven commentaries are not to be taken seriously. It was clear from all the comments that the former governor has an axe to grind.”

    • President hosts national caucus

All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders have converged on Abuja for crucial meetings of the party’s key organs.

Today, the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will hold.

It is the first since September 2023.

The NEC is the highest decision-making organ of the party in between conventions – the statutory highest decision making body.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted the National Caucus at the State House Conference Centre, Aso Villa last night.

The National Caucus, made up of elders of the party is an advisory organ, which sets the tone for   NEC meetings.

The NEC meeting will be presided over by the National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

This NEC meeting was preceded by grumblings from some major players in the party, such as former governors  Mallam Nasir El-Rufai(Kaduna) and Dr. Kayode Fayemi(Ekiti). They     complained about the long time it took to call the meeting.

The duo, also criticised the administration of President Tinubu.

The NEC meeting is made up of the National Caucus, NWC and state chairmen of the party.

During the last NEC meeting, it was resolved that the former chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, should resign.

A source said the meeting was convened to review the progress made by the party in almost two years.

He said: “APC is fulfilling a constitutional requirement for holding the NEC meeting, and majorly, the purpose is to review the progress made by the party in the last two years when it started consolidating on previous achievements as the ruling party.

“Among issues slated for debate is   maintaining the existing unity, harmony and cohesion in our party.

“The on-going reconciliation in some state chapters would also be reviewed as part of the broader agenda for fostering unity and understanding in the fold.

“Inclusivity for new members, those who defected from other parties, will also be discussed

“Also, electioneering is knocking, with preparations commencing from the off-season governorship poll in Anambra State in November, and preparations for governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states next year.

“Between last years and this month, APC has enlarged its coast and defections to the ruling party has led to the challenge of harmonisation of structures, and accommodation of new members.”

The  NEC meeting is also  expected to get update on  litigations involving the party, either at the national or state levels;  the activities of standing committees and the Progressive Institute.

The source added that  the President  was  also expected to explain to the highest organ certain activities of government that are germane to the realisation of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.

At last night’s Caucus meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Ganduje.

Ganduje was accompanied by nine other NWC members – the deputy national chairmen (North and South), national secretary, legal adviser, treasurer, organising secretary, woman leader, youth leader, and leader of persons living with disability.

Also at the meeting were APC governors  led by     Hope Uzodimma of Imo State. Uzodimma  is   chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum. APC stronger, more united, says Uzodinma

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is strong and united as the dominant party in the country,  Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodinma, said yesterday.

He told reporters at the State House, Abuja, after the National Caucus meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu that the ruling party is focused and supportive of the Federal Government government.

The governor added that the ruling party would continue to outshine its rivals.

“Our party is united, stronger, focused, and fully behind the government. Despite the challenges of governance, the party is doing so well, and we need to celebrate our own. The APC is the party to beat and the envy of other political parties, not only in Nigeria, but across Africa”, he said.

Nzodinma  emphasized the party’s unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in implementing critical reforms.

Noting the economic hardship that has accompanied these changes, he said the benefits are gradually emerging.

“We are not unaware of the hardship associated with the various reforms going on, but gradually, the dividends are beginning to manifest. We are now better off in terms of revenue generation, with more resources available for infrastructure, social programs, and economic growth”, Uzodinma added.

The governor also praised President Tinubu’s handling of national security, particularly in the Southeast, where relative peace has been restored.

“If you recall, three years ago, it was almost impossible to visit any part of the Southeast for any function, even for burials.

“People were being buried in townships instead of their villages, and marriages were not held in rural areas. But now, with the way this government has managed insecurity, farmers have returned to their farms, and people can move freely again”, he said.

On internal democracy, Uzodinma dismissed allegations that the APC is a “one-man show,” insisting that its structure allows for broad participation at all levels.

He said the consistent electoral victory of APC is a testament to its democratic processes and growing popularity among Nigerians.

“Why are we winning all these elections? It is because we have demonstrated high capacity and respect for democracy.” he added.

APC NWC disclaims ‘Leadership Council’ in Delta, as Omo-Agege, Nwaoboshi distance selves from contraption

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclaimed the setting of a “Leadership Council” for the party in Delta State.

In a statement on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, disavowed the council.

It said: “The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great Party has been drawn to reports circulating in sections of the media regarding the inauguration of the Delta State All Progressives Congress (APC) Leadership Council ‘approved by the National Leadership of our great Party.’

“This is to clarify that the NWC did not grant approval for the inauguration or operation of the “Leadership Council” in the Delta State Chapter of our Party, as claimed by reports.

“The said “Leadership Council” is not a body created or recognised under the Party’s Constitution which clearly spells out the statutory organs, structures and committees of the Party, and their respective powers and functions. The “Leadership Council” is not one of such constitutional organs, ad hoc – structures or committees of the Party.”

In an earlier statement, Valentine Onojeghuo Delta APC  Publicity Secretary, claimed that the ‘national leadership” of APC has approved the “inauguration of the Delta APC Leadership Council under the co-chairmanship of Olorogun Festus Keyamo, SAN and Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege CFR.

The leadership council was slated for inauguration on March 8, 2025, according to Onojeghuo.

This effectively puts paid to the controversial move set up a parallel collegiate arrangement in the running of Delta APC.

The leader of APC in Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi among other top leaders have dissociated themselves from the purported parallel “College of Leaders.

They said in a statement: “We, the undersigned, are shocked and outraged to discover our names inexplicably linked to a purported Delta APC Leadership Council in a Notice of Inauguration signed by Valentine Onojeghuo, Esq., which is currently in circulation.

“We categorically and unequivocally deny any involvement, association, or knowledge of this council, and we condemn in the strongest terms the blatant and egregious attempt to falsely affiliate us with this illegitimate and unconstitutional entity.

“The creation of this council is a flagrant and reprehensible affront to the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the principles of democracy. Its establishment is a brazen and unauthorized act that contravenes the party’s constitution and the laws of Nigeria. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified that it did not grant approval for the inauguration or operation of this council, contrary to their claims.

“Furthermore, we do not support the proposal that the College of Leaders should nominate party executives and select party candidates. This proposal contradicts our party’s constitution, which grants the power to elect party executives and nominate candidates solely to registered members. Our party’s constitution and extant laws clearly outline the democratic process for electing party executives and candidates, leaving no room for the College of Leaders to usurp this power.

“We therefore strongly object to our names being surreptitiously included in this document without our knowledge, consent, or participation. This is a clear and blatant violation of our rights, and an attempt to maliciously drag us into an illegal and unconstitutional venture. We will not allow our names to used to legitimize this sham contraption.

“We uphold the sanctity of the APC constitution, which emphasizes the supremacy of the party constitution for effective governance and promoting its ideals. We recognize and support all the organs established by the constitution for our State.

These organs are the legitimate and constitutional bodies that govern the affairs of the party.

“While the creators of this contraption have the right to establish their own structures or pressure groups to advance their interests, they have no right to include our names without our consent. We will not participate in or support their illegitimate and unconstitutional activities.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its constitution. We will continue to work tirelessly to promote the party’s interests, unity, and values. However, we will not recognize or subscribe to any non-constitutional organ, regardless of its name or claims.

“We demand that our names be immediately and unconditionally excluded from any documents or publications related to this council. We also demand that the creators cease and desist from using our names to lend legitimacy to their illegal venture.

“We urge all party members and stakeholders to reject this illegitimate council and its unconstitutional proposals. We must stand together to protect our party’s democratic foundations and uphold the rule of law.”

North central forum urges Mark, Saraki, other opposition leaders to join APC

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has called on political leaders and elders from the region currently in the opposition to join the ruling party, emphasizing that only the APC-led administration under President Bola Tinubu can safeguard and advance the interests of the zone.

In a statement on Monday by the chairman of the forum, Saleh Zazzaga, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, former Governors Jonah Jang, Babangida Aliyu, Gabriel Suswam, and Samuel Ortom, as well as former PDP National Chairman, Prof. Iyorchia Ayu, were urged to defect to the APC.

Zazzaga, who was a member of the APC 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, highlighted the region’s improved political and infrastructural fortunes under the APC government compared to the alleged neglect suffered during previous PDP administrations.

Justifying the need for the leaders to join the ruling party, the NC APC Forum criticized the PDP for sidelining its own prominent leaders from the North-Central, stating that figures like Saraki, Ayu, Mark, Jang, Suswam, Ortom, and Aliyu have been marginalized within their party.

Besides, the Forum argued that the PDP’s internal crises and leadership struggles had left little room for these leaders to contribute meaningfully to the national discourse, suggesting that they would find greater political relevance and appreciation within the APC.

According to the Forum’s Chairman, unlike past administrations, the APC has prioritized the development of the North-Central, ensuring that key infrastructure projects receive federal attention.

Citing the rehabilitation and construction of critical road networks, including the Jos-Akwanga road, Makurdi-Oturkpo-Otukpa road, Makurdi-Ankpa road, Jos-Saminaka/Kaduna road, Minna-Bida road, Ejule-Otukpa road, Ganawuri-Manchok road, Lokoja-Abuja road, Lapai-Agaie-Bida road, Birnin-Gwari-Bokani-Mokwa road, and Minna-Zungeru-Tegina-Kontagora road, Zazzaga noted that many of the roads had remained in a deplorable state for years under the PDP without intervention.

He also cited the recent establishment of the North-Central Development Commission (NCDC) as evidence of President Tinubu’s commitment to the region, adding that the enactment bill for the commission was signed into law following persistent calls from North-Central stakeholders who had advocated for similar developmental initiatives as seen in other geopolitical zones.

“The creation of the NCDC demonstrates Tinubu’s willingness to address the region’s needs and promote equity and justice in national development efforts,” Zazzaga said.

In addition, he pointed out that under the APC-led Federal government, the North-Central region has been accorded significant political representation, including the appointment of key ministers and the prestigious office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), currently held by Sen. George Akume from Benue State, arguing that this level of inclusion was not the case during PDP-led administrations, where the region allegedly faced marginalization.

On security, the Forum asserted that the APC government has made substantial progress in curbing insecurity in the North-Central region, a challenge that had previously hindered agricultural activities and economic growth.

He praised President Tinubu’s directive to the Armed Forces and security agencies, which it claimed has led to improved safety and allowed farmers to return to their lands without fear of attacks.

In its appeal to the regional opposition leaders, the NC APC Forum assured the region’s political elders that their contributions and experience would be valued in the ruling party.

It encouraged them to prioritize the development and well-being of their people over party loyalty, stressing that the APC remains the best platform for advancing the interests of the North-Central zone.

The Forum reiterated its endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term, citing his administration’s policies and projects as beneficial to the region’s growth and stability.

  • Why APC should field Umeoji

    Why APC should field Umeoji

    By Nnenna Agbai

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has become a formidable opposition force in Anambra State, now stands at a historic crossroads with the chance to write history and redefine its political legacy in the South East region. As the party’s grassroots support continues to grow, particularly under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, it now has a good standing to solidify its presence and influence in a region where it has historically faced some level of resistance, if not until recently. This time, is not just about winning an election; it is about designing a narrative that resonates deeply with the people of Anambra State.

In April of this year, in line with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC, like other political parties, will conduct its primary election to select its flag bearer for the highly anticipated Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 2025. The primary election represents more than a routine political exercise; it is a defining moment for the party to demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles, internal cohesion, and strategic foresight. The choice of candidate will not only determine the party’s chances to win the state but will also signal its readiness to address the aspirations and challenges of Anambra’s diverse and politically astute electorate.

The APC must seize this opportunity to present a candidate who embodies these qualities- a leader capable of uniting the party, inspiring confidence among the electorate, and delivering good governance.

So far, the APC has yet to finalise the mode of selection for its gubernatorial candidate. While the leadership has remained tight-lipped on whether it will opt for a direct primary, indirect primary, or consensus candidacy, political insiders suggest that the party may lean towards a direct primary to foster a sense of belonging among the aspirants. Although this remains speculative, the political landscape is already buzzing with activity, as no fewer than five aspirants have formally declared their intention to contest for the party’s ticket.

Among the notable contenders are Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji, the Executive Director of Corporate Services at the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and former representative of Aguata Federal Constituency; Hon. Nicholas Ukachukwu; Prof. Obiorah Okonkwo, an academician and entrepreneur; Hon. Johnbosco Onukwo, a legal practitioner and former legislator; and Chief Paul Chukwuma.

Of these aspirants, Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji stands out as a frontrunner, not only due to his extensive political pedigree but also because of his strong grassroots appeal. His political trajectory, marked by consistent commitment to service and development, has endeared him to the masses, making him a formidable force in the race. Umeoji’s stint as a federal legislator, local government chairman, and his current role in a key federal agency underscore his administrative competence and deep understanding of governance.

Umeoji’s entry into active politics was driven by a desire to address the underdevelopment of his native Aguata. As a seasoned businessman and managing director of two private companies, he understood the importance of strategic planning and effective governance, qualities that have defined his political career.

In 2007, Umeoji won the National Assembly election to represent Aguata Federal Constituency under the platform of the Labour Party (LP) marking the beginning of a distinguished legislative career.

His tenure in the National Assembly was characterised by a commitment to grassroots development and effective representation. Over the years, he has held numerous leadership positions, including Board Member of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State, in 2012; Executive Chairman of the Aguata Local Government Council in 2014; and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Anambra State Chapter. These roles have equipped him with a deep understanding of governance at both the local and state levels, making him uniquely qualified to lead Anambra State. In 2017, he was made the Transition Committee Chairman of Oguta Local Government and many others.

Umeoji’s political career has also been marked by his ability to build bridges and foster unity. In 2019, he won a second term to represent Aguata Federal Constituency at the 9th National Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Umeoji has demonstrated his capacity to represent Anambra State on both national and international stages. His current role as the Executive Director, Corporate Services of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, further underscores his competence and the trust placed in him by national leaders.

One of Umeoji’s most compelling qualities is his deep connection to the grassroots. Throughout his career, he has consistently prioritised the needs of the people, earning their trust and loyalty. His commitment to community service is evident in his establishment of the African Centre for Widows Empowerment, an initiative that has positively impacted the lives of widows across Nigeria and West Africa. Through this platform, Umeoji has provided widows with access to education, skill acquisition programs, and seed money for small businesses, empowering them to achieve financial independence and improve their quality of life.

Umeoji’s dedication to youth empowerment is equally noteworthy. He has implemented scholarship schemes and skill acquisition programmes for young people, providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. His initiatives have also extended to market women, whom he has supported through seed money empowerment programs. These efforts have not only improved the lives of countless individuals but have also strengthened the social and economic fabric of Anambra State.

Anambra State is a politically diverse and dynamic environment, requiring a leader who can unite different factions and build a broad coalition of support, particularly at a time like this in its history. Umeoji’s ability to navigate complex political landscapes and foster unity makes him the ideal candidate to lead the APC to victory. As the National Patron of the Tinubu/Shettima Ambassadors (TSA) and a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Stakeholders Special Duties and Contact and Mobilization committees, he has demonstrated his capacity to rally support for the party at both the state and national levels.

His vision for Anambra State is deeply rooted in inclusive development and good governance. He understands the importance of addressing critical issues such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and job creation.

The APC’s success in Anambra State depends on its ability to present a candidate who can unite the party, inspire the electorate, and deliver on the promise of good governance. Honourable Chukwuma Umeoji embodies these qualities, making him the best choice for the party’s governorship ticket. His extensive political experience, deep grassroots connection, and proven track record of leadership position him as a candidate who can not only win the election but also govern effectively.

With him on the ballot for the APC, the party will send a powerful message to the people of Anambra State and the broader Nigerian electorate: that it is committed to competent, inclusive, and responsive leadership. A victory in Anambra would strengthen the APC’s position in the Southeast.

The APC has a golden opportunity to make history in Anambra State by picking Honourable Chukwuma Umeoji as its governorship candidate. The time to act is now.
