No vacancy comment: Don’t blame Ganduje or APC, Okechukwu blasts PDP

A foundation member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has criticized those opposing the party’s national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, for declaring that there is no vacancy in the Aso Villa in 2027.

Okechukwu argued that critics should blame former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his cohorts in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for breaching the rotation convention governing 4th Republic Nigeria politics.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, the former Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) defended Ganduje, insisting that the rotation policy has come to stay despite attempts to breach it.

Okechukwu maintained that the breach of the rotation convention has irreparably divided the PDP, albeit producing the Wike masquerade, which cannot be easily removed from the party’s core.

He asserted that it would be difficult for the PDP to play the robust role as the foremost opposition party and that it would not succeed in a merger like the defunct ACN due to the greed of its leaders, confirming the ancient maxim that divided they will fall.

“The erroneous breach of the rotation convention, a ligament holding our fledgling democracy together in the 2023 presidential election is the PDP’s biggest miscalculation.

“The rotation fire is raging and may not be quenched before 2027. The ugly outcome scenario sounds like the local clincher of the advisory song of the birds to the Reverend Father during Mass, that the big men seated in the altar front row are all the same character.” Okechukwu submitted.

When reminded that some people are opposed to President Tinubu’s second term because of the economic hardship in the country, Okechukwu retorted that the economic hardship is going to ease before the 2027 presidential election.

He said that some of Mr President’s economic policies will start bearing positive fruits, adding that he has prepared grounds for Foreign Direct Investments.

“The truism is that President Tinubu has done well diplomatically; he is a friend of the West and friend of the East. This means that he has the support of the international community to cushion the rough economic edges with Foreign Direct Investments and loan backed protects.” Okechukwu submitted.

Edo poll dispute: APC calls four witnesses with some admitting over-voting

    • To call more witnesses today

All Progressives Congress (APC) opened its defence on Tuesday in the dispute over the last governorship election in Edo State, by calling four witnesses.

Some of the witnesses, who testified at the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, agreed that incidence of over-voting was recorded in some polling units in the local governments where they monitored the poll.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the election, Asue Ighodalo, are by their petition, querying the outcome of the election.

The four witnesses included those that served as APC local government collation agents during the disputed election.

Led in evidence by Echezona Etiaba (SAN), the first witness, Afuda Theophilus Idemudia, a 54-year-old businessman and resident of Benin City, said he monitored the election in Esan North East Local Government.

Idemudia identified his statement on oath, and told the tribunal that result of the election from Esan North East was signed by the agent of the PDP.

He confirmed to the tribunal that under Exhibit PCB-40, titled: ‘Ballot Paper and Verification Statement’, the Part A of the document was expected to be completed by an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the opening of poll, while Part B was to be completed after the close of poll.

The witness noted that page 6 of the Exhibit PCB-40 relates to Esan North East Local Government, adding that it was indicated that the document was for governorship election.

He said under part A of the Exhibit, the first item required the serial number of the Ballot Papers that were issued to the polling units.

When handed a copy of the document to confirm, the witness, said: “Yes, I can see serial numbers recorded on this document. They are: 0459785 and 0460292.”

He maintained that serial numbers of Ballot Papers issued to the respective polling units were filled.

Under cross-examination by lawyer to the petitioners, Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), the witness admitted that there was an incident of over-voting in one of polling units in the local government.

When shown a copy of the result sheets, the witness confirmed that the total number of accredited voters in Unit 11, Ward 6, was 96.

He admitted that after the election, it was recorded that APC got 53 votes, PDP 43 and one rejected vote.

Upon a request by Owonikoko, the witness calculated the votes and told the tribunal that it amounted to 97, as against 96 persons that were accredited to vote at the polling unit.

He subsequently agreed that there was over-voting in the polling unit. He proceeded to say because of the development, the result was cancelled.

The second witness, Kamarudeen Coker Bello, also 54 years, said he is a businessman and lives in Ighara, Edo State. He said he served as a local government agent of the APC in Akoko Edo Local Government during the election.

The witness confirmed signing a written statement on oath before the tribunal on November 9, 2024, which he adopted on Tuesday, while being led by Etiaba.

Under cross-examination by Owonikoko, the witness confirmed that the petitioners raised allegations of over-voting in 17 polling units in the local government in the petition.

The third witness identified himself as Gabriel Iduseri, an engineer and said he acted as APC’s collation agent for Oredo Local Government.

He claimed that there was no complaint about the conduct of the election by agents of any of the political parties that participated in the poll.

The witness admitted that result from polling Unit 8, Ward 10, was cancelled at the Ward Collation Centre due to over-voting.

The witness told the tribunal that it was the responsibility of the electoral officers to confirm the correctness or otherwise of results submitted at the local government level.

When asked if he was aware that in the petition, there was a table of 53 and 66 polling units in Oredo Local Government where petitioners alleged that INEC recorded the results incorrectly, the witness replied that though he read the petition, he could not recall the number of the disputed polling units.

The fourth witness, Frank David, said he served as APC collation agent for Owan West Local Government and that INEC officials diligently collated all the results from the polling units, saying neither himself nor any other agent raised any issue about the final result.

David said himself, the PDP and Labour Party (LP) agents signed result sheets of the election.

While being cross-examined, David said although he was aware that INEC officials ought to fill details of sensitive materials handed to them for the poll, he could not confirm if the procedure was followed, since he did not serve as an official of INEC during the election.

When handed IReV report of Form EC8A of Ward 4 Unit 19, the witness confirmed that although only 36 persons were accredited, votes recorded for the unit were; 28, 1 and 8, amounting to 37.

He was also handed another exhibit containing the result from Ward 8, Unit 8 and he confirmed that the votes were; 54 and 25, amounting to 79, while 1 was marked as rejected vote, making it a total of 80 votes.

The witness claimed that results of the election from Unit 5 were not accounted for, as they were cancelled owing to over-voting.

At the conclusion of David’s testimony, the lead lawyer to the APC, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), announced that his client was preparing a schedule of documents it would tender when the proceedings resumed.

The tribunal subsequently adjourned till today.

Osun govt, APC differ over reinstatement of sacked party’s council chairmen

Osun State Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday locked horns following the reinstatement of sacked local government chairmen by the Court of Appeal in Akure.

The chairmen were elected under the APC platform of by voice votes at the twilight of the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in November 2022.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urged the Federal High Court to nullify the election.

Subsequently, Justice Nathaniel Emmanuel-Ayoola, declared the election null and void on the ground that the conduct of the election contravenes Sections 29 & 32 of the Electoral Act, 2022, hence the APC appealed the matter.

Reacting to the development through Information Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, the state government said there is no judgment restoring the APC chairmen into the various councils because of the previous stance of courts and constitution.

He said: “Consequently, we urge the security operatives to arrest and prosecute anybody, no matter how highly placed, who may want to disrupt the current peace being enjoyed in our dear state.”

Also, the Chairman of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission(OSIEC), Hashim Abioye, called for calm and urged all political parties to go about their peaceful campaigns towards the February 22nd LG poll.

APC Legal Adviser Chief Adegoke Ogunsola berated the government and OSIEC chair for confusing residents of the state after the Court of Appeal reinstated council helmsmen.

He said: “They deliberately set out to misrepresent the purport and import of the decision of the Court of Appeal in the appeal decided today, the 10th day of February 2025 as if the said decision did not reinstate the wrongly sacked APC Local Government Chairmen and Councilors.”

In another statement, by its State Chairman Tajudeen Lawal, the APC in a statement commended the judiciary for reinstating the elected council chairmen and councilors, who were chased out of office by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s government over two years ago.

Edo PDP using media to blackmail tribunal- Mayaki

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) John Mayaki has condemned a recent article published by ThisDay newspaper, titled “All Eyes on Edo Tribunal”, describing it as a deliberate attempt by the Edo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to blackmail the judiciary.

Reacting to the full-page editorial authored by ThisDay Sunday Editor, Davidson Iriekpen, Mayaki dismissed the piece as a calculated effort to manipulate public perception and exert undue pressure on the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

In a statement on Monday in Abuja, Mayaki said: “Those who believe election petitions can be won through sentiment, media blackmail, and coordinated propaganda against the judiciary will be disappointed. Legal battles are won based on the strength of arguments and evidence presented and not the intensity of pressure applied through partisan journalism.”

Mayaki noted that the PDP’s anxiety over the tribunal’s proceedings stems from the fact that INEC didn’t call any witnesses but simply submitted certified election results, materials, and documents that serve as a lawful defense of the electoral process.

His words: “Since INEC provided these materials, PDP has lost sleep. The PDP and their candidate have now escalated their tactics – this time targeting the tribunal and the judiciary with outright falsehoods.”

The APC chieftain, who hailed ThisDay newspaper as one of the best in the country,  challenged the decision to publish anonymously sourced allegations, vague references to ‘analysts,’ and baseless speculation, stating that such practices violate core principles of ethical journalism.

Mayaki said: “Journalism should be about facts, not unnamed sources peddling propaganda. The editor was not quoting analysts who he didn’t even named but he was merely expressing the PDP’s political frustrations under the guise of journalism.”

He further accused the reporter of double standards, pointing out his silence on key instances of democratic abuse under the immediate past PDP administration in Edo State.

According to him: “Where was he when former Governor Godwin Obaseki orchestrated the illegal non-inauguration of 14 elected members of the Edo State House of Assembly?” he asked. “Why was there no ‘All Eyes on the Judiciary’ jaundiced article when Obaseki refused to swear in judges in Edo State? Or when he disobeyed court judgements and deliberately stalled judicial proceedings in courts to suit his political interests until his tenure elapsed?”

Mayaki urged members of the tribunal to ignore intimidation tactics and focus solely on delivering justice based on law and evidence.

“This is a test of character, honesty, and integrity for the judges handling the case,” he said. “They must resist external pressures, uphold the sanctity of the judiciary, and ensure that justice is neither swayed by propaganda nor blackmail.”

Edo APC chair accuses PDP members of spreading falsehood

The Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Mr. Jarret Tenebe, has accused members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of spreading falsehood and misinformation.

He said the antics of members of PDP were classic examples of political grave-digging.

Tenebe, yesterday in Benin, said PDP members’ actions were a threat to democracy and the rule of law.

He said: “As the Edo State APC chairman, I am compelled to respond to the article that has been circulating. The piece is riddled with inaccuracies and misrepresentations, and it is imperative that we set the record straight.

Read Also: Tinubu’s NELFUND game changer for Nigerian education — Presidency

“The article’s assertion that Edo State Government’s actions are tantamount to a constitutional crisis is a gross exaggeration. The government’s decision to appoint Dr. Osani Igbinigie as the Oredo Local Government acting chairman was a necessary step to ensure smooth operation of the council.

“The article’s claim that Dr. Tom Obaseki is the rightful chairman of the council is misleading. The facts on the ground suggest that Obaseki’s tenure has been marred by controversy and illegality. His refusal to vacate office, despite the directive of suspension of office is an indication of his disregard for the rule of law.

“PDP members’ refusal to accept the outcome of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, and their resort to violence and intimidation are indications of their desperation.”

The Edo APC chairman urged residents to see through the PDP members’ antics and reject their attempt to destabilise Edo State.

He assured them that the Governor Monday Okpebholo administration would work to ensure the state remained a beacon of peace, progress and prosperity.

Proposed creation of 32 states may render some redundant – APC chieftain cautions NASS

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Nurain Abayomi Mumuni, has cautioned that the proposed creation of 32 additional states by the House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee could render some existing states redundant.

Mumuni made this known in a statement released on Saturday, February 8, through his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar.

The House of Representatives had earlier in the week proposed the creation of 32 new states during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Reacting to the development, Mumuni expressed concern over Nigeria’s economic struggles, including rising unemployment, inflation, and inadequate infrastructure.

He noted that several states are already struggling to meet financial obligations and provide basic services to their citizens.

He warned that adding more states could worsen the situation, diverting resources from critical development needs.

Mumuni, therefore, urged lawmakers to reconsider the proposal, emphasizing the need to focus on policies that genuinely benefit Nigerians.

“The recent proposal for the creation of an additional 31 states in Nigeria has raised significant concerns in light of the current economic situation facing our nation. As representatives of the people, we must prioritize the welfare of our citizens and address the pressing issues that impact their daily lives.

“Nigeria is grappling with numerous economic challenges, including rising unemployment, inflation, and inadequate infrastructure.

“The creation of more states is unlikely to generate the necessary income or resources to improve these conditions. Instead, it may further strain our already limited financial resources and create additional bureaucratic challenges.

“Currently, several states in Nigeria struggle to meet their financial obligations and sustain basic services for their citizens. The introduction of new states could exacerbate this situation, diverting attention and funding away from critical development needs.

Read Also: APC chieftain urges GAC to end Lagos speakership crisis

“The suffering and disenfranchisement of our citizens should be our foremost concern, and the creation of additional states does not address the core issues plaguing our nation.

“Therefore, we call upon the Nigerian legislature to set aside the proposal for creating new states and to instead focus on consolidating our efforts towards economic recovery and development. Let us direct our energies towards enhancing the capabilities of existing states, promoting sustainable economic growth, and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.

“We must prioritize initiatives that foster unity, peace, and effective governance over superficial divisions that do not serve the interests of our citizens. Our collective future depends on making decisions grounded in practicality and concern for the well-being of the population.

“In conclusion, we urge the legislature to reconsider the proposed creation of 31 new states in light of the pressing economic realities facing our nation. Let us work together, focusing on solutions that truly benefit the citizens of Nigeria.”
