JUST IN: Senator Ned Nwoko dumps PDP, set to join APC

Senator representing Delta North, Prince Ned Nwoko, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he was elected to the Senate in 2023.

In a letter dated January 30, 2025, and addressed to his Ward 8 chairman in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nwoko cited various reasons for his decision to leave the party.

A copy of the letter was made available to our correspondent yesterday by his media team, confirming his departure from the PDP.

The letter: “I write to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party I have proudly served as a foundation member since 1999

“My decision to resign is first and foremost due to the deep divisions and

factionalisation within the party. This fragmentation has made it increasingly difficult to foster unity and advance the collective interests of our people.

“Just this week, precisely on the 29th of January, the top party functions degenerated to the lowest levels by physically fighting themselves arising from the stated factions, which have become irreconcilable.

“I also deeply appreciate the platform the PDP provided me to contest the 2022/2023 senatorial election.  It was an opportunity that allowed me to engage directly with the people of my constituency and present my vision for a brighter future.

    “However, during my campaign, I made solemn and actionable promises to my constituents commitment to take seriously, regrettably, the current structure of the party in our state has not been conducive to realizing these promises. After careful consideration. I have come to the conclusion that stepping away from the party is necessary to fulfill my obligations to my people;

“While I bid farewell to my membership in the PDP, I assure all party members and my constituents of my unwavering dedication to statesmanship” the letter read

2027 governorship candidacy not on table yet, says Ogun APC

Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said its focus is on supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun to succeed in delivering more developmental projects to the people and not candidature of 2027.

It said the matter of ‘candidacy 2027’ or the  ‘governorship ticket’ was neither on its table nor the leaders, stressing that the preoccupation of the party remained the unfolding legacy projects of the governor, which, it noted, would certainly boost the standing of Ogun APC at the next general election.

State APC Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, made this known yesterday in a statement while reacting to a media report alluding that the party stakeholders had opted for Kayode Amusan’s candidacy for 2027.

He said the report had given rise to justifiable misinterpretations and subsequent flood of inquiries by party members and stakeholders, desirous of clarification concerning the matter. Oladunjoye reminded members that the party had an established structure and procedure to apply the big sticks for those who overstepped their bounds.

He said: “Since this morning, I have been inundated with inquiries on a publication by a national newspaper whose headlined today reported that: ‘2027: Ogun APC Stakeholders Opt for Amusan’s Candidacy’.

“As a media man and having reviewed the headline along with the body of the report, I realised that while the headline may be crafty and catchy, however, it leads to justifiable misinterpretations; which have fuelled inquiries by party leaders and members.

“For the avoidance of doubt and with all sense of responsibility, the issue of the candidacy for the 2027 governorship ticket of the APC is not on the table of the party and its leaders for now.

“The current preoccupation of the party is to support our performing governor and leader of the party, Prince Abiodun, in executing his unfolding legacy projects, which will certainly boost the standing of our party at the next general election.

“While members have the right to project their preferred aspirants, we must be wary of misinformation that may heat up the polity and create needless rumours and rancour.

“It is needless to remind members that the party has the established structure and procedure to apply the big sticks for those who overstep their bounds.”

BREAKING: APC expels Aregbesola over alleged anti-party activities

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially expelled former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, from the party over allegations of anti-party activities.

Aregbesola, who governed Osun State for eight years, had formed a faction within the APC known as The Osun Progressives (TOP), now rebranded as the Omoluabi Caucus.

The group was accused of contributing to the party’s loss in the 2022 governorship election.

On Sunday, the Omoluabi Caucus, in a meeting presided over by Aregbesola, announced its decision to leave the APC, citing the party’s declining popularity in the state.

A letter obtained by The Nation from the APC leadership, titled “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You”, formally communicated Aregbesola’s expulsion, finding him guilty of working against the party’s interests.

“At the end of the investigation, the State Executive Committee (SEC) considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee.

“Having carefully considered the findings and recommendations of the Committee, SEC has resolved to accept the recommendation of your immediate expulsion from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“The decision was predicated on the clear evidence of your actions, which undermined the unity and integrity of the Party in violation of the provisions of Article 21 of the APC Constitution guiding the conduct and discipline of members.

“As a result, with the approval of your expulsion, you cease to be a member of APC. Consequently, you are not to hold yourself out as a member or act in any capacity on behalf of the Party in any manner whatsoever.”

APC acknowledged Aregbesola’s past contributions to the party urging him to comply with his expulsion from the party.

APC slams Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai over  anti-Tinubu comments

All Progressive Congress (APC) yesterday took a swipe on opposition politicians Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi over their comments on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration at the two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy that ended in Abuja yesterday.

The party also took a swipe on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for making scathing criticisms about the ruling party.

Reacting through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Felix Morka, the APC faulted the positions of the three leaders during the two-day talk shop.

Morka criticised Atiku for blaming the festering rot in his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the spectacular dysfunction of opposition parties on the governing party.

In his remarks at the national dialogue on Monday, the former vice president warned that democracy was imperiled by judicial involvement in electoral matters.

Atiku also alleged that President Tinubu was paying certain opposition leaders N50 million each to discombobulate opposition parties.

The APC spokesman accused the PDP candidate in the 2023 presidential poll of making unfounded allegations against the president.

He relived how the PDP muzzled all opposition voices when it was in the saddle from 1999 to 2015.

Morka said: “It was in the Atiku era as Vice President, particularly in 2003 and 2007, that the PDP conducted the worst elections in our political history. We cannot possibly forget how Atiku’s PDP heavy-handedly captured most Southwest states and vowed to remain in power for 60 years.

“It was in those same years that Atiku’s former boss and then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, infamously described election as a ‘do or die affair’ in a desperate attempt to annex Lagos.

“If democracy was neither derailed nor endangered in those perilous days, is it now that elections are by far freer, fairer and more credible that Nigeria risks losing democracy?”

He noted that the judicial branch of government is a constitutional creation like the executive and legislative branches with its constitutionally defined powers to adjudicate disputes among citizens and between citizens and the state.

Morka reminded Atiku that he cannot wish away or seek to abolish the enshrined power of the courts to intervene in civil and electoral disputes, in cases where the authority of the court is validly invoked by a litigant.

He said: “It is an irony that Atiku, who is Nigeria’s most prolific electoral litigator, would make such a ludicrous claim that judicial involvement in electoral matters is a threat to democracy.

“His criticism of the courts and the electoral process rings hollow, given his long history of using the courts to further his political agenda. It’s time for him to take a step back and let the democratic process unfold without his interference.

“Nigeria’s democracy is far stronger than Atiku’s political ambitions. We deserve better than petty politicking and alarmist rhetoric from an elder statesman.

“As a veteran politician, one would expect Atiku to understand that while democracy may be about winning election, it is, more importantly, about respecting the will of the electorate and working towards the greater good of all.  Atiku should focus on rebuilding his party and offering constructive solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

“Atiku’s allegation that the APC-led administration was paying out N50 million to some opposition figures is simply bogus and laughable.

“Atiku knows that his political desperation is responsible for the PDP’s catastrophic disintegration. Peddling rumors and unsubstantiated allegations should be beneath anyone in the standing of an elder statesman, a former vice president and a serial contestant for the exalted office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The APC also frowned at the suggestion by opposition figures like Atiku, Peter Obi and El-Rufai that APC may be complicit in the internal corrosion of opposition parties.

Morka dismissed such suggestions as “pitiful, and only an incompetent alibi for their crass failure to manage their own affairs.

He said: “They cannot govern their parties but tout their ability to govern Africa’s most populous country.”

APC slams Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai over criticisms at Abuja conference

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday criticized former PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai over their remarks during the recently concluded 2-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria held in Abuja.

In a statement on Tuesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed their positions as baseless and misguided.

He accused Atiku of repeatedly blaming the APC for issues within his own party, describing his claims as “like a broken record.”

At the conference, Atiku alleged that Nigeria’s democracy was being undermined by judicial interference in electoral matters.

He further accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of paying N50 million to certain opposition leaders to destabilize rival parties, a claim APC dismissed as unfounded.

The APC also criticized El-Rufai’s recent remarks against the party, stating that they were unwarranted.

Morka emphasized that the opposition leaders’ comments reflected their inability to engage constructively on issues critical to national progress.

In his reaction the governing party said: “It was in the Atiku era as Vice President, particularly in 2003 and 2007, that the PDP conducted the worst elections in our political history. We cannot possibly forget how Atiku’s PDP heavy-handedly captured most South-West states and vowed to remain in power for 60 years. It was in those same years that Atiku’s former boss and then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, infamously described election as a “do or die affair” in a desperate attempt to annex Lagos.

The ruling party maintained that discerning Nigerians know better than to be distracted by the false alarm and hollow allegations of desperate politicians whose only goal is shore up their political relevance in the build up to 2027 general elections.

I’m not leaving APC, El-Rufai declares

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed speculations suggesting he plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 2-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria held in Abuja on Tuesday, El-Rufai, a founding member of the ruling party, reaffirmed his commitment to the APC, emphasizing that he has no intention of quitting the party.

“I have no plans to leave the party,” El-Rufai said, adding that he expects improved performance from the APC.

El-Rufai, who has been critical of the party since being excluded from the ministerial list last year, strongly refuted claims about his possible exit when questioned after the conference.

“I am not leaving the APC. I don’t have such plans.,” El-Rufai declared

“But why are you so hard on the party lately?” the former Federal Capital Territory Minister was asked.

“No, no no, I want them (APC) them to change,” he responded and moved away.

But on Monday at the national talk-shop El-Rufai accused APC of abandoning its founding principles and fostering poor leadership.

He complained of lack of internal democracy and active party structures within the party.

According to him, “I no longer recognize the APC. No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show; it’s a zero-man show.”

El-Rufai noted that the APC was originally established to combat corruption, rebuild the economy, and enhance security.

He, however climes that the goals have been abandoned.

“The problems that led to the creation of the APC remain unresolved, but I no longer believe the APC is interested in addressing them. The distance between me and the party is widening,” he hinted

Former Niger PDP governorship aspirant joins APC

Former Governorship Aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 general elections, Sani Kutigi has resigned from the PDP and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter to the PDP titled, “Resignation from the PDP”, Kutigi, a former member of the House of Representatives, said his resignation came after deep retrospective pointing that the PDP which had been a great political sanctuary of values, unity and opportunities with many years of unrivalled political leadership and service in Nigeria had become a political circus of duplicity, division and despondency.

“Unfortunately, this hitherto great party (PDP) has been reduced to a political circus of duplicity, division and despondency that has negatively affected the trust of many of its members and the confidence of most electorates in the country.

“In view of the above, and after due consultation with trusted political confidants and in response to the collective resolve of my teaming political associates and well-wishers, I am compelled to take the painful decision of distancing myself from false political virtue; hence, in search of political purpose and path with clear and mutual objective.

“Therefore, this is to formally tender my resignation from the party after a near decade of meandering through political distrust in PDP i.e. 2015 to date. Finally, I wish to sincerely express my gratitude and understanding for all the opportunities and misfortunes witnessed throughout my political sojourn in the party”, the letter read.

Kutigi had a meeting with the Special Adviser on Political and Strategy to the Niger state Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Nma Kolo in his office and after the announcement of his decision, Kolo took him to the APC state secretariat where they were warmly received by the State Chairman of the APC and other members of the party’s executive council.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unveiled the timetable for the six area council elections scheduled for February 2026.

This move followed the amicable resolution of the internal crisis that had fractionalized the party in the territory and the constitution of a new State Working Committee (SWC) by the National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday.

“Thank God, this issue has been resolved. Today, we have an authentic list of the State Executive Committee and we have as well, the authentic list of the local government executive, as well as the ward excos in FCT.

LP senatorial candidate joins APC, pledges one million votes for Tinubu, Uba Sani in 2027

Michael Ayuba Auta, the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Southern Kaduna in the 2023 general elections, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Auta, who was instrumental in Labour Party’s performance during the 2023 elections, vowed to mobilize one million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani in the 2027 elections.

Speaking at his defection ceremony in his Fai ward, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Auta stated that his decision to join the APC was driven by prevailing political realities and the overwhelming demand from his supporters.

He commended President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for their efforts in fostering peace and inclusivity in Kaduna State.

Auta highlighted the appointment of General Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff as a strong indication that Southern Kaduna had been fully integrated into the government.

Auta’s defection is expected to boost the APC’s influence in Southern Kaduna, a region known for its diverse political leanings.

“This government has given us a sense of belonging. Today, our people can go to their farms and businesses without fear. Unlike the previous administration, President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani has not segregated us,” Auta stated.

Recalling his political strength, he reminded his supporters of his ability to mobilize grassroots support, citing his role in securing 294,000 votes for Peter Obi in 2023 without government backing.

“If I could achieve that as an opposition figure, imagine what we will do in 2027. I guarantee one million votes for President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani. The APC no longer has a problem in Southern Kaduna,” he declared.

His defection was met with enthusiasm from APC members. Hon. Dare Isuwa, the Fai Ward Chairman, described it as “the happiest day of my life,” expressing confidence that Auta’s influence would strengthen APC’s grip on the region.

“He has labored for this party before, and now that he is back, APC will only grow stronger. We are issuing his membership card today, and I have no doubt that whatever he contests under APC, he will succeed,” Isuwa said.

Meanwhile, Auta’s business associate, Hon. Elisha Yahaya, alleged that the Labour Party betrayed Michael despite his enormous contributions.

“Michael built LP in Kaduna, Kano, Niger, and Jigawa within six months. Yet, those he trusted turned against him. It affected his business, but we, his partners, always knew his worth,” Yahaya said.

With Auta’s defection, Southern Kaduna’s political dynamics are set for a major shift, as APC consolidates its hold ahead of the 2027 elections.
