APGA backs Tinubu over nomination of former CDS as defence minister

All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), on Wednesday, said the nomination of former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence is a right peg in the right hole.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday nominated Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.

His nomination was transmitted to the Senate on Tuesday in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

National Chairman of APGA, Sly Ezeokenwa, while speaking to reporters in Abuja, said this is one appointment that has not generated rancour within Nigerians.

He urged Tinubu to further march words with action and tackle insecurity with fear or favour.

Ezeokenwa advised the incoming Minister of Defence to curb the insecurity and ensure that those responsible for the crisis in the country are caught and prosecuted in the nearest future.

He said, “We applaud President Bola Tinubu over the nomination of former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. This is a good development, and Nigerians supported this appointment. There is hope that the insecurity will be tackled with full force”.

  • APGA stakeholders working for Ukachukwu’s, Ekwunife’s victory, APC alleges

APGA stakeholders working for Ukachukwu’s, Ekwunife’s victory, APC alleges

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are working secretly for the victory of Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife.

A former stalwart of APGA, Prof. Theodore Okonkwo, said the joint ticket of the duo is giving some political parties, especially his former party, APGA, serious concern.

Okonkwo, a Professor of Law specialising in Environmental, Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Maritime Law, hails from Ezenaja Village, Oraukwu, in Idemili North Local Government Area. He had been a member of APGA since 2011 until a few weeks ago when he joined the APC.

Speaking with The Nation on his defection, Okonkwo said APGA, once a vibrant movement founded on the principle of brotherhood, had lost its moral compass.

“The truth is that APGA has been hijacked. Their slogan, ‘Onye Aghana Nwanneya’ (Be Your Brother’s Keeper), no longer holds. The party is now filled with injustice, fake promises, and a broken reward system.”

He further alleged that numerous APGA members are quietly working for Prince Ukachukwu’s impending victory.

“Many stakeholders in APGA have sympathy for Ukachukwu. They are working underground but can’t say it openly,” he said.

Okonkwo declared that his decision to join the APC was divinely inspired. “It was not about inducement or persuasion. It was a spiritual revelation,” he said.

He criticised the Soludo administration, saying it had failed to deliver on its promises. The APC chieftain added, “We were excited when Soludo came with the slogan, ‘I will fix it, even if it is not broken.’ But now, it is broken into pieces.

“The governor’s promises do not match the realities on the ground. What happened to the ecological funds? My hometown, Oraukwu, is ravaged by erosion, yet nothing serious has been done.”

  • Anambra 2025: Why Ukachukwu, Ekwunife could disrupt APGA’s hold on power

Anambra 2025: Why Ukachukwu, Ekwunife could disrupt APGA’s hold on power

As Anambrarians prepare for a season of electioneering there is every reason that the political landscape in Anambra State is set for a potentially seismic shift as Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife throw the gauntlet at the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)  deploying their combined political credentials, strategic positioning, and timing suggest they could mount the most credible challenge to APGA’s dominance in recent years.

Senator Uche Ekwunife brings to this partnership a wealth of legislative experience that few politicians in Anambra can match. Having served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, where she performed impeccably well and understands the intricacies of governance at the federal level and the experience gives her unique insight into how federal resources can be channeled to benefit the state – something that could prove crucial in an era where federal allocation and intervention programs are increasingly important for state development.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, on the other hand represents a threshold of new ideas with deep roots in Anambra’s grassroots . His background as a businessman provides him with a connect to the business community which is a very large constituency in the state. His business acumen offers a different perspective on economic development one that is welfarist in nature, similar to the policies of the likes of M.I Okpara.

Both leaders bring significant credentials to the table. Senator Ekwunife’s legislative background and Prince Ukachukwu’s entrepreneurial experience provide them with practical knowledge of what it takes to create jobs and drive economic growth. In a state where unemployment and underemployment remain significant challenges, their combined business networks could attract investment and create opportunities that government alone cannot provide.

Together, they present a balanced ticket that combines experience with innovation, tradition with modernity.

One of the most compelling aspects of this political partnership is how it transcends traditional party boundaries. If these two leaders can successfully unite different political factions and parties behind a common vision, they would create a formidable coalition that APGA would find difficult to counter. This kind of broad-based alliance has historically proven effective in Nigerian politics, where personal relationships and cross-party cooperation often matter more than strict party loyalty.

The ability to bring together diverse political interests suggests strong negotiation skills and political maturity – qualities that voters often look for in leaders who promise to unite rather than divide. This contrasts sharply with the sometimes insular nature of single-party governance that has characterized APGA’s rule.

Their understanding of both local and national economic dynamics positions them well to develop policies that can compete with APGA’s dismal record.

In contrast, despite  APGA’s newfound desire for a relationship with federal authorities, the state’s ability to maximize federal benefits has been below par. A leadership team with proven federal connections could unlock resources and opportunities that have been difficult to access under the current arrangement.

After years in power, APGA faces the natural challenges that come with incumbency. Voter fatigue, accumulated grievances, and the desire for change are common factors that opposition candidates can exploit. The state’s exploitative nature where traders and petty businesses have been repeatedly taxed to stupor and where operatives of the state such as his anti touting squad aka Ndi Aka Odo( People with pestles) have become beasts bearing brutality to the common folk, harassing and extorting hapless innocent citizens.

Governor Soludo seems to have lost his footing as governor, his projects since inception seem to be more cosmetic than development driven. For example, the funds used for the completion of the Government House Anambra now renamed “Light House” would have been enough to gift Anambra 3 power plants, can we imagine the possibilities of a power plant per senatorial district? Can we imagine the solution to our power conundrum and the leapfrogging of our society from a commercial to an industrial giant, competing with states like Lagos and Rivers, positioning Anambra to becoming perhaps the first 20 economies in Africa?

So when the state government begins to celebrate such and other sugar candy land like projects like Anambra Solution Fun City in a state like Anambra in which a 30 percent of its youth population are unemployed and another 30 percent are underemployed, one wonders if this was the same man the state voted for In the 2021 elections.

Even its narrative on security following the emergence of its security outfit, Udo Ga Achi appears shaky as the state has continued to be at the receiving end of criminals with the government looking more helpless whilst prominent citizens have reportedly abandoned the state whilst the ordinary citizen has resorted to self sustaining techniques to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The candidature of Prince Ukachukwu and Senator Ekwunife are well-positioned to present themselves as agents of renewal who will address the shortcomings of the current administration while building on its limited successes.

Their combined profile allows them to appeal to different segments of the electorate – from business communities seeking economic reform to traditional constituencies looking for respected leadership, and from federal stakeholders wanting better integration to local communities seeking more responsive governance.

The success of this partnership will largely depend on their ability to build a unified campaign organization and maintain cohesion among their diverse supporters. If they can successfully merge their respective political structures and create an efficient campaign machine, they would pose a serious organizational challenge to APGA’s established political network.

Their combined resources, experience, and networks provide the foundation for such organization, but the execution will be crucial. The ability to coordinate effectively across different constituencies and maintain message discipline will determine whether their potential translates into electoral success.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife represent more than just another opposition challenge to APGA. Their political antecedents and appeal to the grassroots as well as other constituencies both formal and informal creates a unique political proposition that addresses many of the perceived weaknesses in the current system.

While APGA retains the advantages of incumbency and established governance structures, this partnership presents the kind of comprehensive alternative that could genuinely disrupt the political status quo. Their success will depend on their ability to maintain unity, execute effective campaigns, and convince voters that change is both necessary and achievable.

The political dynamics they bring to the table suggest that APGA will need to significantly up its game to maintain its hold on power. Whether this translates into electoral victory remains to be seen, but their candidature certainly represents the most formidable challenge APGA has faced in recent political cycles.

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Dr Abdullahi Ganduje and chieftains of the party said Saturday in Awka it’s game over for Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State.

Ganduje and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) were in the State ahead of the party’s primaries and the November 8 governorship election.

It was during the commissioning of the APC  Secretariat secured for the party by Sir Paul Chukwuma and equipped by Prof Obiora Okonkwo

Both are contesting the party’s ticket for the November 8 governorship election with Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and two others

The office commissioning by Ganduje and his team looked like a rally as speaker after speaker, said: “enough is enough” for APGA leadership in Anambra state.

The national chairman, who hailed President Bola Tinubu for turning the economy of the country around for good, reminded the APC contenders on the need to work together to capture the state

“We assure you that our President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as the most articulate and committed person, a leader that sees tomorrow and a leader that doesn’t talk much, but knows what to do at any particular time.

“Anambra must connect to the national grid, APC must change the narrative in Anambra, but we must be focused and vigilant.

APC chief defends Tinubu’s appointments, debunks APC-APGA alliance rumour

One of the contenders for the governorship election in Anambra state on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Paul Chukwuma, has stated that those being appointed by President Bola Tinubu are qualified Igbo and Anambra citizens, not members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

He questioned why people are agitated over the president’s choice of individuals from different political parties in the state, emphasising that Tinubu is sharing political offices with not only APC members but all Nigerians as the father of the nation.

Chukwuma, who is contesting for the APC ticket for the 2025 governorship election, spoke on Saturday at his Umueri country home while briefing reporters on the visit of the national chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, on Sunday.

He debunked the claim that APC and APGA are in alliance in Anambra, as speculated.

The APC governorship hopeful commended President Tinubu for including members of other political parties in his appointments, irrespective of party affiliation.

“We support the President in that regard because they are Ndi Anambra and Igbo in the first place. The women are being represented by Iyom Bianca Ojukwu, while the youth is being represented by Mr. Mark Okoye Jr”

…hails Tinubu for appointing Bianca Ojukwu, minister

Governor of Anambra State and national leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Friday disclosed that the party is open to an alliance with any of the political parties that truly professes progressive ideology.

Soludo who spoke at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of APGA in Abuja on Friday described APGA as the foremost progressive movement in Nigeria.

He said having received the validation from the courts, the party is poised to reach for greater heights.

He called on other progressive- minded political parties in the country to join hands with APGA to move the country forward.

Soludo said: “APGA remains ready to extend a hand of fellowship to any party that professes true progressive ideology in order to join hands to rebuild Nigeria.

“For me, more than anything, it’s for us to say to the world that APGA is alive, APGA is strong, APGA is rising. That’s why we have come together to send that message today. APGA is alive, APGA is strong, APGA is rising.

“As the first political party in Nigeria registered as a progressive, the All Progressive Grand Alliance registered in 2002. Every other party that has progressive also in their name, they all came much, much, much, much later. We are the foremost.

“We believe in Nigeria, fairness, equity. We believe in true federalism. We believe in leaving no one behind. True progressivism. And that movement remains alive. That movement is strong.

“That movement will grow stronger. And we are poised more than ever now. Now that the Court has finally cleared all this noise and rumble here and there, we can now also run together”.

The governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment of a member of his party, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, into the federal cabinet as a Minister of State Foreign Affairs.

According to the Anambra State governor, President Tinubu is living out a true government of national unity in the country, adding that the commonness in the name of his party All Progressive Grand Alliance and the All Progressives Congress is not a mere coincidence.

According to Soludo, APGA was poised to unite with other progressive parties to work for a progressive country.

He noted that APGA in years to come would continue to grow from strength to strength.

“In years to come, we will continue to grow from strength to strength. APGA is built to last, Soludo said.

Speaking about the performance of his administration in Anambra state, he said that the APGA -government is very intentional in all its drive for good governance.

He said that his administration wanted to use Anambra state as an example of what the ideology of progressivism is all about and its relationship with good governance.

Soludo commented on the prolonged leadership crisis in the party which was recently rested by Supreme Court Judgement, saying that was a contrived one.

He hailed the judges for upholding justice and the prestige of the judiciary.

Similarly, he commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring steady improvement in our electoral process.

While welcoming party leaders to the NEC meeting, National Chairman of the party, Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa said APGA is transforming into a new party with an agenda to infuse discipline and youth inclusiveness.

He formally announced that the party has granted amnesty to genuine members who worked on the wrong side when the party was enmeshed in crisis.

Ezeokenwa said the amnesty did not cover non-card-carrying individuals who paraded as members of the party during the crisis period.

Apart from the digitalization of membership register, he said the party has commenced setting up of skill acquisition centres through the newly inaugurated APGA Foundation.

In his remarks while breaking cola nuts, immediate past Chairman of APGA, Victor Oye enjoined members of APGA especially those elected on the platform of the party to jettison the idea of decamping to other parties.

Among leaders of the party that graced the event were Wife of the pioneer National Leader of APGA, and current Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, Former Minority leader in the National Assembly and Senator representing Abia North, Chief Enyinnaya Abaribe and Deputy Governor of Anambra state, Onyekachukwu Ibezi.

Leadership crisis: APGA chair hails court ruling

National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sly Ezeokenwa has expressed satisfaction with the ruling of the Federal High Court Abuja, affirming his leadership of the party.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, Ezeokenwa, alongside members of the National Working Committee (NWC) emphasized that the court judgement was a victory for the party and the nation’s democracy.

While reaffirming his loyalty to the Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuama Soludo, he maintained that the judgment was an opportunity for all members, including those aggrieved members led by Chief Edozie Njoku, to unite with him to rebuild APGA.

Amidst a protracted leadership tussle, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in July this year recognized the leadership of Chief Edozie Njoku based on a purported Supreme Court judgement.

An Abuja Federal High Court presided over by Justice JK Omotosho has now compelled INEC to return Chief Sly Ezeokenwa as the authentic national chairman of the party.

He said: “I extend my profound gratitude to Almighty God for guiding us through this challenging journey. I commend the Nigerian judiciary, under the exemplary leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun (GCON), for its unwavering commitment to justice, fairness, and the protection of democratic values. The judiciary, as the bedrock of our democracy, has once again proven its critical role in safeguarding the rule of law, ensuring that justice is not only done but seen to be done. The independence of the judiciary, especially in a time of intense political pressure, stands as a testament to its resilience in upholding the Constitution and ensuring that justice prevails above all else.

“I also commend the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for its eventual respect for the rule of law, particularly after a period of uncertainty. It is imperative that INEC, as a creation of the law, not only respects this judgment but ensures full compliance with it, thereby demonstrating its commitment to a free, fair, and credible electoral process that upholds the trust of the Nigerian people in our democracy.

Together, we stand united in our mission to serve the people of our great nation, upholding the values that bind us. I extend my deepest appreciation to the members of the press for their consistent and unbiased coverage of this matter.”

Supporting his view, Chief Victor Oye, APGA’s immediate past National Chairman and current member of the Board of Trustees, criticized those saying APGA would not win the next election in Anambra State.

APGA leadership tussle: I’ve accepted Supreme Court verdict – Njoku

Chief Edozie Njoku says he has resolved to abide by the Supreme Court judgment which removed him as the National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Supreme Court had, on Wednesday, declared Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the national chairman of APGA, this bringing to an end the lingering leadership tussle which had rocked the party for years.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had, in his judgment, restrained Njoku from parading himself as the APGA national chairman.

Omotosho, while delivering the judgment in a suit filed by APGA and Ezeokenwa, held that there was no valid court judgment that recognised Njoku as the party’s national chairman.

He held that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) erred by recognising the Njoku-led leadership of the party.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Njoku approached the Supreme Court to set it aside.

However, at Wednesday’s proceeding, the apex court dismissed the appeal for being frivolous and awarded N20 million for each of the three charges against him.

Reacting to the judgment at a news conference in Abuja, Njoku said that he believed in the rule of law and the verdict of the court.

“Everyone who knows me knows I believe in the rule of law and hierarchy. In any establishment, there must be a hierarchy. The hierarchy of the judiciary in Nigeria is the Supreme Court.

“We in Nigeria must learn that when the Supreme Court speaks, no matter how or what you think, you must obey it.

“We must be a country of law and order. Things cannot just be turned to suit you because you are uncomfortable. Things cannot just turn to suit Chief Edozie Njoku or Chief Henry Okechukwu or the secretary. We must follow the system,’’ he said.

Njoku said that as democrats, his removed executive members believed in the unity of Nigeria.

“We will do everything within our powers to make sure that there is peace in this country called Nigeria.

“But one thing I promise you is that you can never muffle the voice of the people. The people of Anambra State, in the next election, will speak, and it will be so resounding,’’ he said.

Njoku said that there would be anarchy in the states and the country if citizens decided to choose the judgments to obey or not to obey.

“All said and done, the Supreme Court has spoken and I truly believe in the Chief Justice of Nigeria who had made it clear in so many fora that she must bring sanity to the judiciary.

“I will not and I cannot be a clog in the hog. I cannot and I will not add to the pressure of those who are putting in relentless efforts to make sure that the judiciary can survive a very telling time,’’ he said.

Njoku commended the Supreme Court and its justices for following the right path in the journey.

He also commended the people of Anambra for keeping calm and accepting the court judgment in good faith, saying there must be an end to litigation.

“I’m happy that the Supreme Court said it is an internal democracy of the party. You can do whatever you want on the earth but you cannot change the grassroots.

“The grassroots will decide who are their leaders. And I promise you that Anambra will speak,’’ Njoku stated.

He also commended the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, even though his faction of the party had criticised, fought and taken him to court.

Supreme Court affirms Ezeokenwa as APGA national chairman

The Supreme Court on Wednesday put to rest the protracted leadership dispute in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) by affirming the emergence of Sly Ezeokenwa as the authentic National Chairman of the party.

In two unanimous judgments, a five-member panel of the apex court held that Edozie Njoku was wrongly laying claim to APGA Chairmanship.

The court held that its earlier judgment on the appeal marked: SC/CV/687/2021, delivered on October 14, 2021 which was corrected on March 24,2023, and on which Njoku purportedly relied to lay claim to APGA Chairmanship, did not confer on him any enforceable rights.

Justice Stephen Adah, who read the lead judgment, held that, in the 2021 judgment,   only declaratory reliefs were granted, which were not executory.

He also held that there was

no order or orders in the 2021 judgment to be executed.

Justice Adah noted that, in the earlier judgment, the Supreme Court particularly held that issue of party’s leadership or who becomes the Chairman of a political party was internal to the political party and was not justiciable.

He further held that it was wrong for Njoku to have gone before the lower court to seek to enforce a judgment that had nothing to be enforced as no executory reliefs were granted.

Justice Adah, who urged judges of the lower courts to be cautious, held that the judges of the trial court and the Court of Appeal, who declared Njoku Chairman of APGA were wrong to have heard the suit by Njoku.

He proceeded to set aside the judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on June 28, 2024, affirming the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which had declared Njoku Chairman of APGA.

The judgment in both appeals were applied to the third appeal, relating to the same issue of APGA leadership.

The court awarded N20million on each appeal against two members of Njoku faction (who are listed as first and second respondents), bringing the total cost awarded in the three appeals to N60m.

The three appeals are SC/CV/824/2024 : APGA  & another vs. Chief Victor Ike Oye & others; SC/CV/825/2024: Chief Victor Ike Oye vs. Otunba Kamaru Lateef Ogidan & 2 others, and Chief Victor Ike Oye vs. Otunba Kamaru Lateef Ogidan & 2 others.

Reacting to the judgments, Ezeokenwa commended the Judiciary for effectively putting an end to the leadership dispute in the party and affirming him and the Chairman.

He noted that with its erudite judgments, given on Wednesday, the court has, once again, proved that it is indeed, the hope of the common man.

Ezeokenwa said “We should not always be saying bad things against the Judiciary. Today, I am very proud of our Judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

“like I have always said, our Judiciary will always come through to save our nation when the need arises. That is what it has done today with the erudite judgments delivered today by the Supreme Court concerning the leadership of our party.

“Like our lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) said, what ought not to have taken place was created and has been dragged up to the Supreme Court. It is unfortunate. Money has been expended and party’s  structures distabilsed just because of someone’s selfish and inordinate ambition.

“The judgments today have affirmed the convention that brought us to office and that we are in charge of the running of the party’s affairs.

” So, there no longer speculation or doubt about the actual leadership of APGA. By the judgments, I, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa has been affirmed as the Chairman of APGA,” he said.
