APGA chair hails Tinubu over release of minors

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his directive to discontinue the prosecution of minors detained in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protest.

Ezeokenwa said the decisive action, which mandates the immediate release of all detained minors without prejudice to the law, marks a significant commitment to justice and protection of the young and vulnerable Nigerians.

With about 32 malnourished minors held for three months awaiting trial, Barrister Ezeokenwa emphasised that their release reflects the administration’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of children and preserving their dignity.

A statement on Wednesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the National Chairman APGA, Tony Ogbonna reads: “The release of these children is a commendable step that demonstrates a commitment to justice and protection for the young members of our society”.

The APGA National Chairman urged Tinubu to extend similar empathy in addressing the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He emphasised that Kanu’s release would not only contribute to national peace but also address the persistent security crises affecting the South East and beyond.

“The release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will help to calm tensions and tackle the lingering security issues impacting the South East region and neighboring areas. A just resolution to his case will foster trust and stability, creating an environment for constructive dialogue and progress,” Barrister Ezeokenwa added.

Ezeokenwa further noted that the release of Nnamdi Kanu should be among the most urgent decisions facing the administration, as it holds the potential to significantly de-escalate unrest and insecurity across the region.

“A swift decision on this matter is not only crucial for peace but also a necessary step towards national reconciliation and healing. Now is the time for the government to prioritize actions that restore unity, and this single gesture could be a defining moment for peace across the South East and Nigeria as a whole,” he stated.

The APGA National Chairman reiterated the party’s commitment to a unified Nigeria that respects the rights of all citizens.

He expressed hope that the Federal Government will continue prioritizing initiatives that promote peace, security, and equitable treatment for all Nigerians.

APGA clears 21 chairmanship, councillorship seats in Anambra

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all 21 chairmanship and councillorship seats in Anambra State.

The local government election, held on Saturday, September 28, was conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).

The results were announced late Sunday in Awka by ANSIEC Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe.

Osakwe confirmed that APGA secured all 21 chairmanship positions, as well as all councillorship seats in the state’s 21 local government areas, as declared at the ward levels.

She described the election as the fairest, noting that the commission meticulously collated and analyzed the results to avoid any errors.

During the announcement, no opposition candidates, political parties, or their agents were present at the ANSIEC office where the election results were declared.

The ANSIEC chairman, who read out the total votes and names of the APGA candidates, declared them winners and returned elected, having received the highest number of votes.

She praised the people of Anambra State for turning out in large numbers to exercise their civic rights and thanked security agencies for maintaining peace and order throughout the process.

“We carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes.

  • APGA Chair, Njoku threatens Soludo, others with suspension

APGA Chair, Njoku threatens Soludo, others with suspension

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Edozie Njoku has said that the Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo was on the verge of being suspended from the party due to his alleged protracted anti-party activities.

Njoku said 80 percent of the APGA’s leadership has agreed that Soludo and others to be suspended for anti-party activities, adding that their names would soon be announced by the party in a bid to sanitize it and instill discipline, decorum and orderliness on members.

The APGA Chairman said these at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday shortly after the proceeding in a case involving the party.

He said: “Remember what the Chairman of the APGA BoT said, that we the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party should take action so that we don’t look like toothless bulldogs.

“One of those people to be suspended is the governor, and I am saying, are we going to suspend the only governor we have?

“But, if the only governor we have is pretending or playing to the gallery, making these honest people to go in and commit anti-party activities, we must nip this in the bud.

“I don’t know what Soludo is playing at and I don’t know what his problem is, but he must conform himself under the party,” he said.

Njoku said the suit (before the Federal High Court) was aimed at securing an interim injunction for INEC to stop recognizing him as the authentic National Chairman of APGA.

“Unfortunately for them, the court presided over by Justice James Omotosho, refused to grant the application, insisting that they must put the National Chairman of APGA and others on notice,” he said.

Njoku accused Soludo of  thwarted every move by the Supreme Court and INEC-recognized NWC to restore peace to the party by allegedly engaging anti-party activities.

“If you remember, just about a week ago or two weeks ago, we just left the Court of Appeal where a stay was applied at the Court of Appeal to stay me being recognized by INEC despite the fact that the Supreme Court said in their own words that the removal of Chief Edozie Njoku as national chairman of APGA is not justiceable.

“They went to Awka and filed the suit, suddenly the the judge in Awka was very smart, and he pulled out of it.

“They came to the Federal High Court again. They filed another one behind our back, they were applying for an interim injunction behind the back of the national chairman of the party, behind the back of APGA, behind the back of the orders of the Court of Appeal, which asked that they should enforce the judgment as pay or affirm the enforcement of the judgment, as per the Buhari High Court.

“They went forward behind the back of APGA and INEC were very smart, and INEC have written that everything they said is not true.

“The local government elections are going to take place in Anambra on the 28th but what we should understand about this is that Charles Soludo, the governor, I don’t know, he should know that it’s a political system he’s not an emperor.

“He has gone forward to get the House of Assembly to adopt, to make a law whereby the party cannot field their candidates.

“They went to the field and conducted something behind the back of the party, where they assembled certain people who are conducting anti party activities” Chief Njoku said.

“Soludo must know that if there is anything filed in this court, it is going to be filed by APGA. He cannot bring someone not recognised by the law, and who is already facing a contempt charge, which is a man called Sly. He has already been served with Form 48, alongside Oye, who is going to be sentenced soon.

“In all these things, we must realize that there is law and order in Nigeria. That you are a governor, with so much resources does not mean you should waste the resources of people of Anambra State trying to chase shadows.

“A Supreme Court judgment has been enforced at the lower court, and has been affirmed by the Court of Appeal. You went for Stay at the appellate court and the court said, no, we cannot stay this man.

“Now, you have come to the lower court again to deceive those people. What effect will the lower court have on the judgment of the Court of Appeal? None. You are just carrying us around, we are spending money on SANs left, right and centre because you feel you have Anambra State money to spend. It is highly unfair to those poor masses in Anambra state.

“Soludo must now try to think back and understand that the money being given to him from the federation account is not given to you for selfish interest, but for the betterment of Anambra State.

“They are pushing us far to the limit, and they are believing that the Governor of Anambra State is bigger than the Party. No one is bigger than the Party. Maybe, they are playing on the fact that I want peace, that I will not change.

“If you recall, I have been preaching peace, peace and peace because it is not in the interest of the party for us to start suspending elected officers, to suspending a governor, to start suspending House of Assembly members, to start suspending the Senator from Abia,” he said.

Njoku disclosed that the party was not planning to restrict nomination of candidate for the next governorship election in Anambra, but will throw it opened to every interested member.

He urged those interested in becoming the governor of Anambra State to come forward and be prepared to go through the primary process which, he said, would be seamless.

  • APGA tottering onthe brink of collapse

APGA tottering onthe brink of collapse

There are serious signs that all is not well within the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). If the crisis is allowed to fester, the party may disintegrate soon. Southeast Bureau Chief NWANOSIKE ONU  reports

The subsisting leadership crisis within the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is threatening its existence. If the crisis is allowed to fester, the party is likely to disintegrate. Being the only state it controls, if the party fails in Anambra, it is over for it.

The APGA is one of the minor opposition parties in the country. It came into existence in June 2002 and won its major political victory in the 2003 general election when it clinched the Anambra governorship seat.

That victory was stolen by the then-ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He backed the party’s candidate in the election, Dr. Chris Ngige to usurp the position through the instrumentality of the state’s political ‘godfather’ then, Chief Chris Uba. The rest is history.

However, the APGA was not satisfied with the outcome of the election. Led by its candidate, the irrepressible Peter Obi, it went to court to challenge the declaration of Ngige as governor. It was a court battle that lasted till 2006 when the matter was finally decided in favour of the opposition party.

Obi who emerged as the party’s flag bearer ahead of Chief Okey Nwosu, the then PDP national treasurer widely expected to clinch the ticket, was subsequently installed as the duly elected governor of Anambra. Since 2006, the APGA has held sway to the governorship seat in Anambra. Since then, it has also won local government, state and National Assembly elections in states like Benue, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Abia, and Plateau at one election or the other.

However, the five-year leadership tussle appears to have dealt a blow to its reputation in Anambra. Observers believe this development may mar the party’s chances of retaining the state in the 2025 governorship election.

Currently, Chief Edozie Njoku and Sly Ezeokenwa, a lawyer, are at loggerheads over the party’s national chairmanship position. Chief Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central at the National Assembly on the Labour Party (LP) platform, had led the APGA for about 12 years before he handed over the reins to his namesake, Dr Victor Oye.

Since then, the party has been destabilised by internal squabbles because of the tussle over its leadership. After Oye was suspended ahead of the 2021 governorship election, Chief Jude Okeke was declared the acting national chairman. This is the genesis of the crisis that has refused to abate.

Since then, APGA chieftains have moved from one court to another, trying to resolve the tussle. The crisis is still lingering; there are no signs of an amicable resolution in sight.

The Supreme Court judgment that ought to have put paid to the crisis did not help matters; it worsened the situation because it did not streamline its position. Njoku has persisted in his claim that Ezeokenwa is not the authentic chairman. The former argues that the latter is merely clinging to the mention of his name in a completely different matter by the Supreme Court.

Njoku believes the Supreme Court has given him the mandate to lead the party. But, to Ezeokenwa, it was an erroneous recognition. Meanwhile, the party suffers and bleeds as the crisis lingers.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the APGA national leader, has been under pressure to uphold the Supreme Court judgment that supposedly recognizes Njoku as chairman. For instance, the founding National Chairman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, wants Soludo disciplined for failing to uphold Njoku as APGA national chairman. Chekwas, at a press conference, accused the governor of trying to destroy the party.

After a protracted battle, Njoku was finally recognized by the regulatory body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).  However, it is not yet Uhuru for the party because Ezeokenwa is not willing to vacate the exalted position. He told The Nation that it is a position that he is lawfully occupying.

He said: “What is rather intriguing is the claim by INEC that its decision was according to an alleged court order. Sadly, INEC is yet to furnish us or even the members of the public with the court order that compelled it to take that decision.”

Citing a Supreme Court letter by the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Ezeokenwa argues that the court’s ruling on March 24, 2023, did not recognize Njoku as national chairman.

The confusion in the APGA has made it difficult to understand the true position of things. While the majority of its members have faith in the party, supporters of Governor Soludo within the fold continue to believe in the party.

Soludo does not believe that Njoku has the backing of the apex court to lay claim to APGA’s leadership. This position, according to Ezeokenwa, could be attributed to a Certified True Copy (CTC) of a letter written by Justice Ariwoola, dated June 6, 2023, notifying counsel to Njoku that the Supreme Court in its ruling of March 24, 2023, did not recognize Njoku as APGA chairman.

Ezeokenwa said: “We firmly believe that the Supreme Court will speak further to clarify if there was anything in its ruling of March 24, 2023, to be enforced to put to rest the misinterpretation arising from the correction of the accidental slip in its judgment now that the case has found its way back to the Supreme Court, to challenge the Appeal Court ruling of June 28, 2024.

“We therefore call on all our aggrieved members, supporters and Nigerians to remain calm knowing fully well that this is yet another storm in teacup.” Governor Soludo, the chairman of the APGA Board of Trustees (BoT), says the Anambra people seem to have concluded that APGA is the party for them. He said: “It is no longer those years of burning down buildings and turmoil; Anambra is now stable because of the APGA. “That has been the reason for the progress we have witnessed here. The people of Anambra have resolved that the APGA is the party that can develop the state. For instance, under our leadership, the APGA has never been stronger than it is today. You asked this question about the crisis because of what you see in the media about our party. But things like these are normal during the run-up to an election.

“I know someone else is claiming that he is the national chairman and that is through a court order, and I haven’t seen that court order myself. This is just a family problem that will be sorted out soon. Sooner than later everyone will come into the same big tent. I don’t see any division in the APGA.

“I understand the disputants are in court and, hopefully, they will resolve their differences soon and I hope that after that, two of them will come into this tent. The APGA is a movement that has been used for transformations and I can tell you that the party has never been stronger than now.”

The Deputy National Chairman (Southeast) of the Njoku faction, Tony Ezekwelu, believes that Soludo, Ezeokenwa and all the chieftains of the APGA in their group are only burying their head in the sand, like the ostrich, to avoid the reality. He told The Nation that the pronouncement of the apex court had entrusted the leadership of the party to Njoku and not Ezeokenwa.

He said the recent sealing of the party’s office in Awka by Soludo and his camp will spell doom for them when the time comes. He said the governor’s camp is just trying to intimidate and harass the Njoku-led faction with its executive fiat to cow them.

Despite the confusion within the party, both factions have started selling expression of interest forms for elective positions in the forthcoming local government election in the state.

While the Njoku faction has rented a building in Udoka Housing Estate in Awka, the Ezeokenwa faction is occupying the magnificent edifice erected by the former national chairman, Dr. Victor Oye.

The four-story building which also serves as the party’s Southeast zonal headquarters, is situated along the Awka-Enugu expressway before the Nnamdi Azikiwe University school gate. Ezekwelu maintained that since Njoku’s men took over the leadership of the APGA Soludo has not been loyal to the party.

He added that the dire consequences of his action for him and his group would become clearer as the 2025 governorship election draws closer. Ezekwelu added: “Edozie Njoku has come to stay; the best option for our governor right now is to mellow down and realign, otherwise, the next thing that will follow will be regret.”

One of the chieftains of the party, who does not want to be quoted, told The Nation that what is happening within the party is regrettable. He said: “Our once peaceful APGA has become a theatre of the absurd. Some people want to destroy it and some of us know those responsible. But I want to appeal to our governor to be careful in this kind of situation, because any form of slip may spell doom for him particularly.”

The Nation gathered that Soludo and his men are considering shifting base to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), as an alternative should it become impossible for him to vie for re-election on the APGA platform. But, one of the government’s appointees, who pleaded anonymity, debunked such a claim, describing it as a ‘pepper soup joint’ rumour.

An activist, Comrade Osita Obi told The Nation that the kind of destructive politics people are playing is alarming. He said: “Those hyping this crisis are people who want to distract the governor because of the 2025 governorship election. But they won’t succeed. The people know what they want because Soludo is repositioning Anambra.” The onus is now on the Supreme Court to resolve the crisis for good. In the meantime, the APGA faces two critical elections in November: the local government election and next year’s governorship election.

While pundits expect the gladiators to present a united front, the opposing camps are plotting to outsmart each other. Each side appears to be resolute on its stand. Soludo is not bothered because he has the option of leaving the APGA. He may opt for the APC or his former party, the PDP. Both parties would gladly accept him because his presence would boost their chances of winning the election.

    APGA leadership crisis deepens

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), leadership crisis has taken a new dimension, as the State Independent Electoral Commission ANSIEC has failed to recognize the Chief Edozie Njoku- led group

As a result, the National Chairman of the party, Chief Edozie Njoku, has sent the National Working Committee NWC to Anambra State to visit all the communities, wards in the 21 local government areas to brief the people.

Also, the party has appealed to the Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to allow peace to reign as the party is tired of further troubles, having been in Courts for five years.

These were conveyed to the Governor and other party members, when the National Organizing Secretary, Okoro Benedict, led the NWC to the state at the weekend to brief reporters

Okoro said, “It might interest you to note that the leadership change in APGA was also duly communicated to the Anambra State Commands of State Security Services and the Nigerian Police Force.

APGA sues INEC over alleged involvement in leadership crisis

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) has filed a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged partisanship and unlawful involvement in the leadership crisis of the party.

The national chairman of APGA, Sylvester Ezeokenwa, who revealed this in Abuja on Friday, July 19, while briefing reporters, said the party has approached an Abuja High Court because INEC has failed to provide available evidence justifying that Chief Edozie Njoku was once a national officer of the party by the order of any Nigerian court.

In a suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/966/2024, filed Thursday 18 July 2024, before His Lordship Justice J.K Omotosho of Abuja High Court, APGA prayed that the court should mandate INEC, and ensure that the party leadership is not truncated by its partisanship.

Ezeokenwa further stated that the party has raised interesting posers for INEC and to enable right-thinking Nigerians to assess the situation under review: “We are therefore at a loss regarding the recent false representation by INEC that Chief Edozie Njoku and his group are National Executives of APGA ‘by order of Court’ We challenge the Commission to produces any Court Order wherein the Court has made any positive pronouncement recognizing Chief Edozie Njoku and his group as National officers of APGA.

“We firmly assert that no such court order exists. The current representation by INEC concerning Chief Edozie Njoku and his group is false, illegal, baseless, and without any justification”.

The APGA chairman further regretted that INEC, as an institution created by the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, is duty-bound to operate strictly within the confines of the law.

He said: “It portends grave danger for our democracy for INEC to arrogate to itself the unfettered power to determine who the National Officers of a political party are without recourse to due process. It is abundantly clear from the plethora of court judgements and rulings that the legitimate leadership of APGA is firm under Barr. Sylvester Ezeokenwa.

“As a law-abiding political party, we have written INEC through our team of lawyers on the correct position. We trust that INEC will act swiftly to rectify any misinformation and uphold the integrity of our party’s leadership as ruled by various courts of law. In light of these clear Judicial determinations, we urge INEC to correct this misinformation promptly. This sanctity of accurate information is critical to maintaining the trust and confidence of the public in our electoral process.”

Ezeokenwa said INEC duly monitored the legitimate APGA National convention held on May 31, 2023, at the International Conference Centre (ICC) Awka, Anambra State, by the binding statutory provision, and subsequently issued a report.

He said: “We expect INEC to act responsibly and rectify the publication to reflect the legitimate leadership of APGA, under Barr. Sylvester Ezeokenwa.

Meanwhile, the chairman said the party remains united under its legitimate leadership and will continue to pursue the best interests of party members and the Nation at large.

He urged the commission to respect and always be bound by the outcome of the monitored National convention held by APGA as well as the final judgement of the court.

Re-run: APGA defeats PDP to reclaim victory in Yenagoa state constituency

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Hon Amakoromo Waikumo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) the winner of the Yenagoa Constituency II House of Assembly rerun held on Saturday.

Waikumo polled a total of 5,959 votes to beat his closest rival, Hon. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 5,263 votes.

Declaring the result at the INEC Collation Centre, Okolobiri, the Returning Officer, Prof. Chris Onyema, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, said the APGA candidate scored the highest number of votes and declared winner of the court-ordered rerun for Yenagoa Constituency II.

Recall that before ordered rerun in seven units of the constituency by the Court of Appeal, the APGA candidate had 4,971 votes while PDP got 4,593 during the March 2023 State House of Assembly election.

The votes scored by the candidates at the just-concluded rerun poll were added to what they scored during last year’s election with the APGA again emerging victorious and truncating the third term ambition of Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai of the PDP for the state House of Assembly.

Koku-Obiyai, then incumbent lawmaker and Chief Whip of the House of Assembly, rejected the result of the poll over alleged irregularities and malpractices in some polling units and therefore headed for court.

The court ordered a rerun in seven polling units in Gbarain and Ekpetiama.

The conclusion of the rerun poll in the affected polling units has resolved the contention for the constituency 2 seat in the 24-member House or Assembly.

APGA chieftain condemns attacks on Ajaero, urges police to arrest perpetrators

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the 2023 Imo state governorship election, Tony Ejiogu, has expressed sadness over the brutal attack on the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero in Owerri, the state capital.

The NLC president was in Owerri on Wednesday, November 1, to mobilize Imo workers for a protest rally in the state over an alleged violation and abuse of rights and privileges of workers by the state government, but the planned peaceful protest turned violent with allegations that thugs emerged and descended on the protesters and labour leaders.

In a statement on Thursday, November 2, Ejiogu described the incident as a “huge embarrassment to the highly cultured and peace-loving people of Imo state.

He said: “Regardless of the sentiment that the perpetrators of this act might express, there is no moral or legal justification for violence against a fellow citizen. There should be no place for violence in the Imo state that we all want to live in and prosper.

“How did we get here as Imolites? When did we become a state where leaders and elders are being disrespected, beaten up and disgraced while our children are watching? When did we become a state that has no respect for the leadership of the working population of our nation?” he said.

Ejiogu, however, urged the police to ensure that the perpetrators of this “shameful act” are brought to book.

He stated: “While the police have been providing the public with their details of this sad event, please permit me to state that an issue like this should not end on the pages of newspapers and social media because our state and the police leadership will be on the wrong side of history.

“This is not just a crime against Ajaero’s person, but against Nigerian workers, our state, and humanity. I appeal to the Imo State Police Command to ensure a thorough investigation of this shameful act so that its perpetrators are exposed, charged, and made to face the consequences of their crime.”

The APGA candidate also appealed to the people of the state not to lose hope in the future of Imo state.

“Do not be discouraged by these events. Rather, let them inspire you to troop out on November 11 and use your votes to choose a new future for our state. Vote for a new leadership that has genuine respect for human lives and places the security of the state as its top priority.”

APGA to Obi, Atiku: Tinubu won convincingly

The All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) has told the Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart Atiku Abubakar to join hands with President Bola Tinubu to develop Nigeria if they truly love the country.

The National Chairman of the party, Sylvester Ezeokenwa, a lawyer, said this at weekend in Awka, while hailing the victory of President Bola Tinubu, at the Supreme Court.

Speaking with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, during a courtesy visit at the APGA zonal secretariat, Ezeokenwa, said Tinubu won the February 25 presidential election convincingly, adding, ” there was no need for such litigations”

Ezeokenwa said the Supreme Court’s verdict on the petitions filed against Tinubu by  Obi of LP and Atiku of PDP, showed that Tinubu won the February 25, 2023 presidential elections.

He urged the opposition parties and other Nigerians to join hands with Tinubu to develop the country.

However, he noted that the pyresident has started well going by his policies, adding that he should make sure he fulfill up to 50% of his campaign promises and work towards moving the country forward.

“APGA has positioned itself in a vantage position to win more elective positions in the country during the next electioneering period.

“All post-primary elections bickerings which had in the past held the party to ransom, would no longer repeat themselves.

“Henceforth, we would insist on transparent primary elections in all the elective positions. Journalists as truly the watchdogs, they have a vital role to play in nation-building.”
