Onuoha: Why I left PDP for APGA

Chief David Onuoha is a chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and its senatorial candidate for Abia North Constituency in this year’s general election. In this interview with SUNNY NWANKWO, Onuoha who has just defected from the PDP explained why he left the party and his agenda for the people of Abia North, if elected to represent the constituency.

Why did you dump the PDP for APGA?

My reasons are very simple. As we all know, there is no internal democracy in the PDP; they don’t practice it. If the just-concluded primaries are anything to go by, we were promised a level-playing field and on the eve of the primaries, everything changed. Governor Theodore Orji gave instructions to the delegates, saying they should vote for a particular person. The returning officer was changed to favour the anointed candidate and it was obvious from everything that happened that there was no level-playing ground and that we were cheated. At that moment, I decided that I could not continue pretend that everything was right. That’s why I moved to APGA. I’m not the only one; other aspirants also moved to achieve that which we have set out in the first place to achieve and that is to bring leadership, innovation and change to a famished people.

What are your chances of winning, considering your opponents?

It is for the people to determine. As far as I am concerned, my opponents are no threat. You have to look at where somebody is coming from to tell where they are going to. You have to also look at peoples antecedents to know what they can do and what they cannot do. The PDP is hoping to rig this election; that’s the only way they can install their candidate and I don’t think that is going to be possible now. In a free and fair election, I’m the clear favourite; there is no way the PDP candidate can win.

What do you intend to do for the people of Abia North and the state at large?

It is about impacting positively on the lives of the people; bringing about dividends of democracy that the people can feel in their lives. I want to make sure that the people I represent will know that I am representing them; see that somebody is representing them, and feel that somebody is representing them. In 1995 when people were still sleeping, I had a vision; to bring about Bourdex telecoms and that outing changed the way business was done in the former eastern region. I impacted on the lives of our people then, by making it easier for them to communicate with their loved ones and business partners at home and abroad from the comfort of their homes. Remember that was the time they said telephone was not for the poor. People travelled from their locations to Lagos, just to make international calls. But, I broke that jinx by providing telephone to share their joy and their grief with their loved ones and to communicate with their business partners. So, it takes vision to be able to do anything.

I have a lot of things that I wish to do for Abia North to help impact on the lives of our people, in terms of job creation and making life more comfortable for them. That is part of what I have set out and hope to do for the people of Abia North as the Senator representing the area, by the grace of God.

What is your unique selling point?

I am coming from a private sector background. I am not your everyday politician. I am not one of your usual suspects and I want people to believe in me, invest in me and then watch to see what I can do.

Another thing is that my main opponent, Mao Ohabunwa of the PDP, has been there twice. You cannot point to anything that he has done. So, I think the people should consider trying another person; somebody with a different orientation. There is no harm in trying something new and I promise you that they will regret it.

I want people even many years after we have gone to say, once upon a time, there was a man called Bourdex. He came, did this and did that all in the interest of the people that he once led or represented.

  • PDP, APGA lose more members in House

    Reps adjourn till February

The House of Representatives has adjourned plenary till after the presidential election but not before seven members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) defected to All Progressives Congress (APC).

While announcing the adjournment, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, said the adjournment of plenary was to pave way for committees to work on the 2015 budget.

However, before the adjournment, six other Representatives joined the Deputy Spokesman, Victor Ogene in defecting to the APC.

Ogene said his defection to APC was informed by lack of internal democracy in APGA and the factionalization of the party.

Other defectors cited denial of party ticket and maltreatment as reasons for dumping their previous parties.

The defectors include Fort Dike, APGA (Anambra) to APC; Ibrahim Kamba, PDP (Kebbi) to APC; Garba Umar, PDP (Kebbi) to APC; Abdumalik Cheche, PDP (Niger) to APC; Chukwuemeka Nwogbo, APGA (Anambra) to APC and Zakari Haliru, PDP (Niger) to APC.

Others are – Madwatte Anthony PDP (Adamawa) to PDM; Wison Nathaniel PDP (Adamawa) to SDP; and Benjamin Aboho from PDP (Benue) to APGA.

Defending the adjournment that came four days after a three week break, Ogene said it was important for the lawmakers to resume from the Christmas break in order to consider the 2015 Appropriation bill.

He also said concerns for voting rights of internally displaced persons were also paramount in the decision to resume from the break.

  • APGA candidate alleges plot to rig poll

APGA candidate alleges plot to rig poll

The Ebonyi State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Anthony Agbo, yesterday alleged that a major party was plotting to rig the election.

He said no amount of conspiracy and intimidation would change the divine plan for the state.

Agbo, addressing reporters at his country home, Ngbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government, condemned the omission of his name from the list of governorship candidates released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said there was a malicious rumour by the top echelon of a party that he would not run for the governorship poll.

His words: “There is plot to rig the election. No amount of conspiracy and intimidation will change the divine purpose. They also spread rumour that I would not vie for the election, as my name was missing from the initial list of governorship candidates sent to the INEC office in Abakaliki.”

Agbo said he resisted the move to remove his name from INEC’s list, which led to it being published later.

“Besides removing my file from INEC, these agents of destabilisation attacked and destroyed our party’s office in Mgbo.

“They burnt documents at our party’s office and destroyed items, such as furniture and posters.”

He warned those involved to desist, as he knew their identities.

Agbo noted: “It is clear that the forces of good and evil are competing for the soul of Ebonyi, but I assure the indigenes that no amount of conspiracy and intimidation will change the divine plan for the state.”

He urged the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to tighten loose ends and ensure the conduct of credible elections, as the top echelon of a particular party boasted that it would influence INEC, the police and  military.

According to him, the APGA state chairman was in Abuja following the attack on the party.

“We will officially report the matter to the police when he returns.

“Those, whose houses were attacked, have reported to the police. I assure the people that we will not be intimidated. We will go about our campaign according to the law.”

The governorship candidate enjoined the people to resist intimidation and financial inducement and vote for him and other APGA candidates, arguing that no other governorship candidates had the kind of positive records and vision he had for Ebonyi State.

  • Otti assures electorate of free, fair elections

Otti assures electorate of free, fair elections

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured the electorate that the innovation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would make rigging difficult in next month’s elections.

Speaking with reporters in Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government, he said the innovation introduced by the electoral body would make it difficult for rigging to succeed.

Otti said with the introduction of the biometric card reader by INEC, it would be difficult for anybody to rig, adding that he believed votes would count.

The APGA governorship candidate urged the electorate to vote.

He attributed voter apathy to rigging in the past, stressing that it would be difficult this time.

His words: “Many people were disillusioned by election because of rigging. But this time, votes must count.”

Otti said he had mobilised the electorate to obtain permanent voter cards and vote for him during the election.

The APGA governorship candidate said he would win because the party had a structure and enjoyed support at the grassroots.

He added: “Anybody who loves Abia and detests underdevelopment will vote for me. Many people are not happy with the situation in the state. So, the best thing is to vote for me for that change.”

The former managing director/chief executive officer of Diamond Bank Plc said he joined the governorship race to stop maladministration and develop Abia.

Otti said: “I entered the governorship race not as a politician, but to rescue the people from poverty. I will ensure that the resources of the state are utilised.”

  • I’m APGA’s authentic candidate in Abia, says Ufomba

I’m APGA’s authentic candidate in Abia, says Ufomba

Abia State All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship aspirant Chief Reagam Ufomba has said that he is the authentic flag bearer of the party. He said the primary election that produced him as the candidate received the approval of the party leadership.

Ufomba spoke with reporters in Umuahia, the state capital, shortly after he was presented to the public at the Aba Recreation Club by the Acting Chairman, Chief Ejike Uche.

The party leader said  the former Diamond Chief Executive, Dr. Alex Otti, was pronounced as the candidate by Chief Victor Umeh and Governor Willie Obiano in error.

Ufomba said Otti has visited him for a truce, adding that the banker-turned politician has not become a card-carrying member of the party.

He said Otti is yet to register as an APGA member in his ward as provided for in the party’s constitution.

Ufomba added: “Otti came to my house to beg me and I told him that since I am a child of God, let us use the wisdom of God to do things, that I don’t have any secret when it comes to politics. They came here some days ago to commit illegality which they are still doing till today.

“By the APGA constitution, a governorship candidate is the leader of the party in the state where we have no governor and that is what I am. I have been building this party since 2010. I had a cease fire agreement with Otti, but he has violated it and I will tell him so right here that he is not a member of APGA.

“You have seen our national chairman and the 17 local government chairmen of our party present in this occasion and none of them are working with Otti. Democracy is different from military rule. It is different from dictatorship it has tenets, rule and procedure of governance. If all the 17 local government chairmen are here, who is with Dr. Alex Otti? His ward 5 chairman is here. He told me and I believed him that as I speak, Alex Otti has not registered in his ward. I am aware that he just left PDP, went to Abuja on Nov 11 to obtain his card in Abuja, they gave him receipt and that receipt became the party card. I know which I am sure every other person knows that before one vies for any elective post, that you must be a member in your ward. What I am saying is that Alex is not a member”.

“Abia has become a banana republic where one will come and do whatever he likes. They came here to commit illegality two days after court of competent jurisdiction had restrained Umeh from parading himself as the APGA national chairman. It is unconstitutional and impeachable offence to hold BOT position and still be the governor of a state.

“Abia has overgrown a situation where some persons that have been ordered by court to stop parading themselves will come and present someone that is not a registered member as the governorship candidate of our party and we can never allow that to happen”.

  • ‘APGA ‘ll bounce back in Abia’

‘APGA ‘ll bounce back in Abia’

Chief Reagan Ufomba is the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State. In this interview with Sunny Nwankwo, he speaks about his ambition, the APGA  crisis and its preparations for next year’s polls.

Why are you in the governorship race?

I have often said that I am in this race for my people. I was also in the race in 2011; I was the APGA governorship candidate in 2011 election. My motivation has not changed. I was and I am still motivated by the sufferings of my people, the mere extinct of what used to be the pride of Abia and Igbo people and that is Aba.

I am motivated by the loss of vision and focus by successive governments. Abia should be one of the fastest growing economies in the world because we have what it takes to be the number one state. We have the human and material resources. The basic motivation is the infrastructural decay, which we intend to improve on. Aba is a disaster and we need to maximize the gains accruable to agriculture through mechanized farming, processing of products and export of such products, these are not there yet.

Youth unemployment. We need to set up small scale agriculture, small scale industries to enable farmers maximize their profits and of course their sufferings. These are the major motivations propelling me to run for the governorship of Abia State.

Why is Aba a disaster area?

The jargon or slogan is not new to me which every other person has turned himself into a copycat. In 2011, I did declare a 12 point agenda for Aba alone. Aba is the commercial hub of not just Abia State, maybe not just for Igbo land, but for Nigeria and it is in such a deplorable situation. People cannot move freely, flooding all over the place, we have gullies in all our roads in Aba and life has become so difficult for the inhabitants. If you have God, if you have vision and conscience it means that you save the people of Aba and the commercial town from going extinct and collapsing. And when you talk about the town, you are talking about one of the most industrious and resilient people in the world. There is no group that would be put under the kind of condition of Aba people; both the traders and civil servants and all that they have gone through that will survive it.

On the other part, Aba should be a revenue earner for the state going by its network of commercial activities and that is not being harnessed. Aba has a chain multi value effect when properly developed. It will help the government to earn more revenue and have more money to run the state and because Aba is a cosmopolitan town, you will be widely acclaimed and acknowledged as a governor that has performed.

Aba is the center of economic activities, not only in Abia, but the country at large and I tell people that as soon as Aba is fixed, Abia is fixed as well.

Apart from Aba, are there other programmes you have for the state?

I am happy you mentioned about my comment at the Aba Recreation Club during my flag off. I did talk about free education at secondary and tertiary education levels. We intentionally excluded the nursery and primary schools because we expect parents to bring up their children at that level. We are going to offer free education. We are going to mechanize agriculture and I did say that Abia is standing on a tripod of Agriculture, commerce and artisanship.

In agriculture, for instance, we intend to mechanise and process. We will generate employment for our people and in addition to that, we will earn more revenue through the exportation of what we produced.I also did say that we are going to reintroduce Marketing Boards that will buy up whatever the farmers in the rural areas produced because we are going to process it and when we process, we market.

We are going to support traders in the state with bonds and guarantees because for you to make profit in business, you need to borrow at single interest digit rate. You need to have collateral that can give you money to engage competitively with people in Lagos, Onitsha, Port Harcourt and other parts of the country. But because of the state of Aba, an edifice of this nature (his house) if valued at N1billion in Lagos, it will be valued at N10million in Aba and government need to come in and breach that gap so that people who are trading in Lagos would compete favourably with those who are in Aba because the more money you have, the more business you do, the more business you do, the more people you engage, the more tax you pay. So the value chain we get when government get involve is enormous and I have also said that I do not believe in this school of thought that government in a whole state like Abia has no business being in business. We are going to drive the economy.

Abia is a poor state. Where would you get money to fund these projects?

One of the things that I have against this government is that they keep misapplying funds. It is a serious issue in Abia State and may be in most other states. You need to prioritize; government needs to do things that are extremely necessary, that we are going to do. We are going to prioritize and by so doing we save funds. We are going to harness the potentiality of the people. Aba on its own is a revenue earner, but you must organize it

What is your unique selling point?

My selling point lies in my vision. My uprightness, commitment to excellence, commitment to service and commitment to whatever he believes in.People say that Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba is a fighter. I fight for whatever I believe in. Some say he is intelligent, I articulate my position all the time. Others say that the man is resilient; for whatever I believe in, I stick to it, I fight for it and if need be, I even die for it. These are the USP (Unique Selling Point) of Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba.

What is your reaction to the crisis rocking the APGA, which resulted into the emergence of two governorship candidates?

Let me start from our national office. I must continue to stand on the path of truth and justice. Umeh’s tenure has elapsed and he must go. He is the architect of the entire problem that we have in APGA, including the exit of a gentleman, Peter Obi from the party. We can no longer allow him to destroy the party.

Is the APGA a credible opposition party?

If a party won the 2011 election but was stopped by the ills of the society, which we are fighting today, it means that is a credible opposition. Even if we didn’t win and we came second, it means that APGA is a credible opposition party. But I can also tell you that in 2015, there is no party in Abia that will defeat APGA and when you talk of APGA, people are talking of Ikemba Nnewi and Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba in Abia and no more, no less.

What is the level of confidence you have in the INEC?

Well, I think we have a clear departure from where we were in 2011. We now talk about card readers, permanent voter’s card that is 21century compliant. We have also listened to Jega talk about linking ones card to the ballot papers and to your vote. That makes it a little difficult for people to snatch ballot boxes to go to somewhere and thumbprint them and, as such, over stuffing the ballot box and in return, get bloated votes.

What is your reaction to zoning?

That is absolute nonsense. When people say things to favour them, I simply pray that God should touch their heart. I have been a player in Abia politics effectively from 1999 till date and I know that the zoning formular has been between Old Aba and Old Bende divides and by so saying, Ukwa Ngwa and Old Bende. When people come and say it is in the interest of fairness that this thing goes to Abia South. What are they talking about? Am I an Umuahia person? I am an Ukwa Ngwa man and that is the struggle that has been on since 1999. Right from the old Imo State, people have laboured and fought that an Ukwa Ngwa man becomes the governor of the state.

If we say that we are going to get the governor based on senatorial divides, are now saying that an Umuahia man, who lives in Aba or a Bende man who is living in Ukwa or Ohanku Street, should become the governor. It is a question for the proponent of this illegality to answer. Can an Umuahia man living in Abia South become the governor? They will say no that is an ngwa man. I am an ngwa man and I am eligible to contest and that has been the position. You also cannot talk about ngwa without the head of the clan.

  • Fear grips PDP candidates over INEC’s list

Fear grips PDP candidates over INEC’s list

There is tension in Anambra State, following the non-inclusion of the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) list for the general elections.

Some of the candidates have threatened to mobilise against President Goodluck Jonathan in the elections.

When INEC’s list was released last week, the PDP candidates’ names were missing, raising doubts whether or not the party would take part in the elections.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who preferred anonymity, said the submission of names had ended “and any other thing INEC does will be illegal.”

APGA’s National Chairman and the party’s candidate for Anambra Central, Chief Victor Umeh, threatened that the party would seek legal redress to stop PDP from fielding multiple candidates.

This, according to him, had become a norm in the party’s practice in the state over the years, adding that APGA had written to INEC and PDP.

The Nation learnt that the situation was causing panic among PDP candidates.

Following the deployment of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) ahead of the elections, another REC had been posted to Anambra. He is Edwin Nwakatari from Ezeagu in Enugu State. He takes over from Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu.

The Nation gathered yesterday in Awka that the REC might resume next week.

When our correspondent called on INEC’s spokesman Frank Egbo for confirmation of the list, he said: “I’m not competent to comment on it.

APGA governorship candidate promises to rebuild Aba

The Abia State governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Alex Otti, has promised to transform the ancient city, if  elected  next year’s general elections.

Otti, who was received by a crowd of supporters, lamented about the sordid state of Aba, which used to be a prime location for industries in the Southeast. Speaking at the popular Ariaria International Market in the city, the APGA flag bearer said the transformation of the city would be one of his priorities, adding that the filthy and horrendous is a slight on the  leadership of the state under Governor Theodore Orji.

Otti had a very healthy interaction with traders during the market tour and the traders were well at home to have a heart-to-heart chat with him and laid before him some of their concerns.

One of the traders, Obinna Innocent, promised to rally his fellow traders to support the APGA candidate. He expressed concern however over  the ability of Otti and his supporters to secure enough votes to win the contest, given the antics of those he referred to as enemies of the state.

Also speaking, another trader, Mrs. Duru, expressed great dismay at the state of the Ariaria market and Aba in general, urging the APGA flag bearer to keep to his promises ‘when’ elected. Duru assured Otti traders in Ariaria believe in him and his master plan for the development of Abia State come next year.

In his response, Otti assured the gathering that he is a firm believer of President Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘one man, one vote’ philosophy and that their votes will be protected, even as they also have a major role to play in this regard.

He advised those that are yet to collect their permanent voters card (PVC) to do so at their various local government headquarters because that is the main tool they need to change Abia for better. He pledged to abolish multiple taxations and provide a conducive environment for business in the state.

  • 500 APGA, LP members defect to PPA

five hundred members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Labour Party (LP) from Nnewi South and Aguata local government areas of Anambra State yesterday defected to the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA).

The defection took place at Ekwulobia Township Stadium in Aguata Local Government.

PPA was led by its state leader, Chief Godwin Ezeemo. Flags were presented to the candidates, who won the primary elections.

Ezeemo urged the people to vote for the party, saying it would improve their welfare.

“The indigenes have become disenchanted with what is happening in APGA, PDP and other parties. They want a reliable party. This is why they are defecting to the PPA,” he said.

Enjoining the people to vote for PPA candidates, Ezeemo noted: “We are here today to showcase our candidates by giving them flags.”

Receiving his flag from the leader, the House of Assembly candidate from Nnewi South, who led half of the defectors to the arena, said: “Because of what is happening in APGA, selection instead of election, we have to leave the party for PPA where one is given the opportunity to contest.”

He said PPA would provide a level-playing field and urged the aggrieved to defect to the party.

The House of Representatives candidate for Aguata Federal Constituency, Mrs. Angela Okoye, said she joined PPA to enable her give the dividends of democracy to the people, adding that she had been helping people.

Mr. Geoffrey, who defected from the LP and is contesting for Aguata North seat in the House of Assembly and Mr. Clinton Vitus Amara, who is vying for the Nnewi II seat in the House, vowed to provide dividends of democracy to the people.

He hailed Ezeemo for using his money to build the party.
