  • MASSOB, security agents clash in Onitsha

    • Four killed •MASSOB blasts APGA for witch-hunting

Four persons were reportedly killed yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State when members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) clashed with security agents.

MASSOB leader Ralph Uwazuruike, who spoke through the Director of Information, Uchenna Madu, said the organisation was witch-hunted because it refused to support the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Madu said a joint team of army, police and men of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) stormed MASSOB headquarters on Onitsha-Owerri Road and allegedly opened fire on their members.

He said 87 persons were injured and denied medical attention because of lack of police medical permit.

The MASSOB leader alleged that about 18 vehicles belonging to MASSOB members and traders at Ngbuka-Obosi, Old Motor Spare Parts Obosi, 137 motorcycles were burnt and N920,000 taken by the security agents.

MASSOB alleged that other items destroyed included 23 bags of rice, four bags of beans, 11 bags of garri and 228 tubers of yam and other food items.

“This devilish act of cowardice meted out on MASSOB was not unconnected with our refusal to allow our name to be used by some desperate politicians, who wanted to score cheap political goal, using our platform.

“We issued a statement distancing ourselves from APGA and its candidate ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

“We are very quite aware that the stand we took did not go down well with some persons in the state, hence the attack was to disorganise us and browbeat us to submission.”

But The Commander 302 Artillery Regiment Onitsha , Col T.A Gagariga said no body died.

”The police is in charge of joint patrol, we are only supporting with other security agencies but because they saw Army vehicles everybody was shouting the Army.

”Nobody was killed and there was no casualty as at the time of this report. Some people were arrested and they were all at the Inland Town Police Station.”

Police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka, however, said he had not been officially briefed on the matter.

  • Party exposes PDP’s, APGA’s rigging strategies

Party exposes PDP’s, APGA’s rigging strategies

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has exposed the plan by desperate politicians in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to rig Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State.

It warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against allowing itself to be used to carry out such plan.

In a statement in Ibadan yesterday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party listed some of the rigging strategies as disenfranchisement of voters, especially in opposition strongholds; massive thumb-printing of ballot papers in secret locations; sloppy accreditation process; late or non-delivery of voting materials to opposition strongholds and the use of the police and other security agencies to intimidate voters.

It described the strategies as old tricks, which INEC should be well aware of, if the electoral body was keen on delivering a free, fair and transparent election.

“There are plans to use several secret locations, including Ogidi, for massive ballot paper thumb-printing, and it is an open secret that some of these locations are being fortified for secrecy.

“Plans are also afoot to foist a sloppy accreditation exercise on voters by muddling up names and photographs of voters in such a way that most voters will be disenfranchised.

“Also, areas where the APC candidate is the strongest will either be starved of voting materials or will not even receive such materials at all, while the police – which are fast becoming the armed wing of the PDP – as well as other security agents will be used to harass and intimidate voters.

“These are some of the evil strategies, which the riggers are counting upon on Saturday. This is the same game plan that the PDP used to rig the Delta Central poll last month, with the collusion of some dirty INEC officials,” APC said.

The party warned, however, that Anambra people would not allow a replay of such electoral heist and unmitigated brigandage, “neither would we condone any action that would not ensure a level-playing field for candidates at the poll.”

It warned INEC, the police and other security forces to restrict themselves to their constitutional roles during the election, instead of conspiring with do-or-die politicians.

“We will expose, challenge and shame those bent on ruining the election in Anambra, using our counter-measures.”

APC urged INEC to present and use for the Anambra poll, an authentic, legitimate and reliable voter register; ensure a proper voter accreditation as well as proper documentation of agents and voting materials, starting from the polling units to the collation centre; and make sure that the distribution of election materials are timely, effective and well-monitored.

The party enjoined its supporters to be extra-vigilant before, during and after the election; protect their votes within the limits of the law and their own safety.

    •PDP holds rally for Nwoye

•Receives APGA, Accord, LP, PPA members

Vice President Namadi Sambo yesterday promised that the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State will be free and fair.

He said the principle of one man, one vote will operate during and after the exercise.

Sambo spoke at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka during the governorship rally of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for its candidate, Comrade Tony Nwoye.

The VP expressed hope that Nwoye will emerge victorious during the election.

The high light of the rally was the defection of the Deputy Minority Leader in the House of Assembly, Hon Emeka Idu(Onitsha North) to the PDP.

The former Accord Party(AP) member led members of the Progressives People Alliance (PPA), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Labour Party (LP) numbering over 3,000 to join PDP

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur; Former National Chairman, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, pronounced the end of the reign of APGA in the state.

Ekweremadu said: “We shall recover all the things the locusts have taken in this state. We want to recover Anambra to end kidnapping and provide job opportunities to our youths.”

Ihedioha said the only way to make former President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, happy for his post- humus 109 years will be for Anambrians to vote for PDP.

Former National Chairman of the party, Dr Ahmadu Ali, who spoke in his Igala language to some of his Anambra North kinsmen, begged them to close ranks to make the dream a reality.

At the rally were Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo; Deputy Governor of Abia State, Sir Emeka Ananaba; National Organising Secretary of PDP, Victor Kwom; Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Senator Wali Jibrin.

APGA’s plot to rig poll through head teachers uncovered

An alleged plot by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to rig next Saturday’s governorship election through head teachers has been uncovered, The Nation learnt yesterday.

A source alleged that head teachers of secondary schools had been invited to a meeting today by Governor Peter Obi to inform them of the plan by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to use them as returning officers.

The source said returning officers are always appointed from the universities, while INEC uses the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members as poll clerks and presiding officers.

Corps members have been in training, which will end today.

The source said Governor Peter Obi had been giving buses to schools.

The Nation gathered that the APGA administration has influenced INEC to engage head teachers as wards’ and local governments’ returning officers.

However, INEC’s spokesman in the state, Mr. Frank Egbo, said the allegations were untrue.

He said people were talking out of ignorance, adding that INEC invited the head teachers for a voter education workshop at the Girls Secondary School, holding today.

  • APGA will retain power in Anambra, says Obiano

APGA will retain power in Anambra, says Obiano

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Willie Obiano, has said that the party will retain power and intensify its service delivery to the people.

He spoke at the Idemili Day celebrations held at Nkpor. The area is believed to be the stronghold of his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Senator Chris Ngige.

The ceremony was organised to raise funds for the building of a secretariat and a skill acquisition centre. But it became a rally that offered the plaform for Obiano and other candidates to shed light on his manifestos.

Obiano was accompanied by the APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh. But the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, also stormed the ceremony with a large number of supporters.

Despite the absence of Ngige, who hails from Alor, at the event, the community leaders still expressed support for his ambition to rule the state. They said that they would not sacrifice the son of the soil on the altar of politics.

Senator Annie Okonkwo, who was the chief launcher, called for political tolerance among politicians to ensure a peaceful election on November 16. He donated N10 million to the worthy cause.

Senator Okonkwo said the proposed centre will equip the youths with life changing skills and re-directing their energies from kidnapping, armed robbery and other vices.

A community leader, Emeka Nwabueze, an engineer and Information Technology expert, implored the youths to shun evil and embrace value, virtue and hardwork.

He urged them to emulate the governorship candidates by shunning avarice and graft.

Nwabueze recalled that he attended Ogidi High School and rose from his humble begining to become an aide of former United States President George Bush.

Obiano thanked the people for supporting APGA in the last seven years. He urged the people to retain the party in power by voting for him on November 16.

He lauded the developmental programmes of the Obi Administration, assuring that the tempo will be sustained, if elected as his successor.

Obiano described himself as the candidate to beat, adding that other contenders cannot beat his profile.

He called for continuity, saying that APGA, the traditional party of the Igbo, will never renege on its promises to the people.

Dignitaries at the ceremony also included Chief Obiaora Okonkwo, the leader of NzukoIdemili Association, Dr. Emma Emelumadu, who chaired the ceremony, and other prominent indigenes.

  • APGA will retain power in Anambra, says Umeh

APGA will retain power in Anambra, says Umeh

All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman Chief Victor Umeh spoke with reporters on preparations for the November 16 poll, shortly after the party’s rally in Onitsha. AUGUSTINE AVWODE reports.

Your party was involved in a protracted crisis. Will that not affect its chance at the governorship poll in Anambra State?

There are bound to be disagreements one way or another, but the important thing is the ability of the people that are involved to close ranks and reconcile. I can tell you that the APGA came out of the disagreement much stronger in the sense that the things many people wished should never be possible again have become possible and became the tonic, which the party needed to defend itself against the opponents.

So, I can tell you that there is a new spirit within the APGA that can best be described as wonderful. We were the original people that made the APGA what it was, what it still is, and there is no way people who laboured together to build an organisation, and along the line, some issues that were not well managed can be allowed to cause the organisation to disintegrate. It was a situation of rekindled hope in the party and everybody is ready to work for the party. Everybody is desperate to ensure that the party survives and the only way the party can prove that it can survive is by winning the election. So, we are very strong now and everywhere in the state, you can see it for yourself. From the rally that we have had today, it is the second in about nine days or so. The first one was wonderful and today’s rally was superb.

There is the insinuation in some quarters that the candidate of the party is a green horn, politically. Don’t you think that can affect the chance of the party?

There is nothing called green horn in a business like this. The people that are described as green horns may be very difficult to beat. I have said it before that, when you are a part of a society and have carried yourself very responsibly, at anytime, you can seek public office and the people will welcome you. Those who considered themselves as strong horses in the state have been losing elections. That some one has been part of a process for 20 years by being involved in the process will not guarantee you preference in the eyes of the people. If that were to be the situation, some people that have been in politics for 20 to 30 years must have become Presidents or governors. But that is not always the case.

In the present case, we have capable people, who are also known in their communities and the careers they have had. Nobody is faulting them that they are not competent or knowledgeable or that they can not deliver the goods. The only thing they are saying is that they are not politicians. By that, they mean not being the itinerant type of politicians. They will say they are strangers in politics and so they should not be supported. Well, that is not a good argument. The people in question here are urbane, well educated, people who have had experience and exposure in their careers to run the affairs of the state. So, there is nothing like green horn in this exercise. Then, you have to also consider our platform in the election. Our party is entrenched in the Anambra State. We have been here, we have fought difficult battles and stood against tough opponents in the past and overcame them. So, that platform is still the platform of choice in Anambra State. Once we have people, who are found to be worthy, both in character and in learning, they can stand on the platform and overwhelm those who are old horses. Our candidates will defeat them in the coming election.

Critics say that your candidates are cronies of the governor, who were propped up to hide his misdeeds in office?

What I have always heard is that they were imposed; I have never heard this angle you mentioned. But those who are champions of the claim that our candidates are imposed are actually the ones that were imposed on others. People don’t accept their own limitations, but spin things around against people who are honest and hardworking. As for people who are saying that they are cronies, I don’t know how you can describe somebody who has worked in the bank for 23 years. Governor Obi never had any interest in the bank that is up to 12 years; so, you cannot call him his crony. This is a man who excelled in his career, retired without blemish. Is it the running mate that you will call his crony? Somebody who is a senior lecturer in a university, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and holds a PhD in Monetary Economics. How can he be a crony to Governor Obi? And for the allegation that they have been brought to cover his misdeeds, don’t they have access to information? Why are they not unmasking Obi’s misdeeds on the pages of newspapers, instead of threatening every time that it will be terrible when Obi leaves, they will expose this or that? That is just fishing in the bush to cover their shortcomings with propaganda. There is no such thing. They only exist within the figment of their imagination. In Nigeria, Obi is known to be the most prudent governor in this country. He is the only governor that has been adjudged to have managed resources very prudently and deploying them to the development of the state. So, what is he going to cover? Somebody ignorantly declared that Obi is spending N15billion local government fund every month. The whole of Anambra State gets about N3billion every month on local government; and the person spoke publicly, talking out of ignorance. Our people have appreciated Obi in the past seven and a half years, in the areas of infrastructure development, revamping our educational sector, our health sector and so on and so forth. So, where is the money that he is stealing? You cannot pursue development without money, anyway. If our people are surprised at the level of achievements Obi has recorded and they have been hailing him everywhere, where are those misdeeds that he is hiding? Many state governments are broke now. They cannot pay salaries. Yet, at the twilight of Obi Administration, he is injecting about N40billion in a final push to meet Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) projects. Instead of saying the man has performed, they keep living in the illusion that he has something to protect and that is why he is sponsoring A or B. There is no such thing. Obi is not afraid of anything.

What about the issue of your candidate’s alleged double registration?

I have read this story in the papers and I was amazed. The reason being that, those propagating the rumour are those who are afraid of the green horn in the election. They described him as green horn, yet they insinuate that he should be disqualified. If he were a green horn, why is his participation in the election a problem to them? Why do they want him disqualified at all cost? The people saying this thing are not officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The electoral body is the custodian of the voters register in Nigeria. They are the ones who will indicate whether Willie Obiano registered once or twice. What I heard was that Obiano was said to have registered in Lagos and that he also registered in Anambra State. The governorship election is taking place in Anambra State on November 16, not Lagos. The law is that nobody should vote twice in a constituency. Is Obiano going to vote in Lagos on November 16? The voters register has just been released; the soft copy to parties. Go and print it and see, if his name will appear twice in his ward. If his name appears twice, then, he can be said to have violated the laws. I can tell you authoritatively that his name will appear only once in the voter’s register that has just been released today. So, all this stories are peddled to create confusion by people who are afraid. They know he is the candidate to beat in the election and they will continue to look for straws to clutch onto to smear his name. Let them go and prepare because Obiano will defeat them at the election.

You have often described the campaign as ‘Operation Osmosis’. What is Biology doing in politics?

Of course, we have done two campaigns and you see people defecting into APGA. It is the strongest party in the state. In Biology, the stronger solution draws the weaker one. Last week, on October 7, we were overwhelmed by defectors from other parties. Our people, once they know where the prospect of somebody winning election is highest, they go there. That is the Osmosis in the campaign. We are drawing the people from the weaker parties. There are those who have been in the PDP for the past eifght years, idle and they say they cannot continue like that again. Today they are with APGA, because they know that their candidates stand no chance. And we are happy to receive them because they are all Anambra people. Not propaganda, today, the former Speaker of Old Anambra State House of Assembly, defected to APGA. He has been a very strong member of PDP. But he has changed his mind.

  • Anambra: INEC, APGA, Obiano dragged to court over double registration

Anambra: INEC, APGA, Obiano dragged to court over double registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and its governorship candidate, Chief Willie Obiano, have been dragged to court by Abum Emeremgini in Anambra State over an alleged double registration.

Also joined in the suit at the Federal High Court in Awka is the INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof Chukwuemeka Onukaogu.

Emeremgini, is praying for an injunction restraining the 1st and 2nd defendants (INEC and REC) from parading and recognising the APGA candidate as a candidate in the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State.

This, according to the plaintiff, is for having not fulfilled the constitutional requirements for the qualification of a governor of a state.

The plaintiff is also praying for an injunction restraining the officers, servants and agents of 1st respondent (INEC) from interfering or deleting data of the 4th respondent, Willie Obiano, from the register of INEC.

He alleged that proper procedure has not been followed for the transfer of the name of the 4th respondent (Obiano) from Lagos to Anambra State in the transferred voter’s list of the 1st defendant’s register.

Again, that any purported transfer was not done in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

  • APGA too desperate to win, says Ngige

APGA too desperate to win, says Ngige

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, yesterday told United States (US) diplomats that the desperation of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to win at all cost could derail the election.

“APGA’s desperation to win the November 16 governorship election has manifested in its destruction of APC billboards, posters and attacks on members of my campaign team,” Ngige told Messrs Rolfe Olson and Craig Lanless, the Political/Economic Section chief, US Consulate, Lagos and Political counsellor, US embassy, Abuja, who interacted with him at Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area.

In a statement by the Director, Ngige 2014 Campaign Organisation, Chief Charles Amilo, the APC standard-bearer said the odds were against Mr. Willie Obiano, APGA’s candidate, “as he is the greenest horn of all the candidates and Anambra State does not appear to be ready for a governor who is coming to learn the ropes.”

Ngige told the diplomats that APC was well grounded in the state, adding that the propaganda about its status was baseless.

“What Anambra people are interested in is a capable and reliable governor, not a political party. The state has suffered developmentally and it cannot afford to be ruled by a learning governor,” he said.

Ngige said his programmes had a special place for children and women through free education and free medical care for expectant and nursing mothers.

He urged the diplomats to inform their government to increase the number of election observers for the election, as the state’s 21 local governments and 356 wards would not be adequately covered by the proposed 20 observers.

“The November 16 governorship election is a major test for Nigeria to attain genuine democracy. If the country must move forward, the outcome of the poll must reflect the wishes of the people,” Ngige said.

The diplomats told the APC candidate that they came because they were interested in a free, fair and credible election in Anambra State. “USA is interested in the process leading to the election, the election proper and the final result, because we want to make sure that it conforms to international democratic standard,” they said.

The diplomats promised to consult Western countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, to collaborate on using more observers during the election.

  • Fear grips APGA over Nwoye’s, Ngige’s influence

Fear grips APGA over Nwoye’s, Ngige’s influence

Members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are no longer comfortable in Anambra State, following the rising popularity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige.

Besides, the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt declaration of Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) as the party standard-bearer in the November 16 poll has also unsettled APGA.

When PDP members were at loggerheads over who should be their candidate, APGA adherents were in a joyous mood that they had only Ngige to contend with during the election.

But after the pronouncement of the court on Wednesday, APGA’s woes worsened because Nwoye is from the same senatorial zone with the APGA candidate.

Besides, Ngige’s presence in any function attended by the APGA candidate, Chief Willie Obiano and his supporters, including Governor Peter Obi, has been a nightmare for APGA.

A member of the party, who spoke with The Nation yesterday in Awka, said: “We have a double headache now because we will not contend with Ngige alone, Nwoye has joined the fray.

“He is even from Nsugbe, a neighbouring community of Aguleri where Obiano hails from. That apart, Nwoye’s mother is from Aguleri.

“As we were trying to settle this puzzle, Ngige came to Nzam in Anambra West to pick another influential person, Ralph Okeke, who is a former chairman of that local government and an ex-member of the House of Representatives, as his running mate. You can see that it won’t be an easy ride for us.

  • INEC denies plans to rig for APGA

INEC denies plans to rig for APGA

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied allegations that it plans to rig the November 16 Anambra State governorship election for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The commission said yesterday in Awka that it was not working for any party, adding that it would ensure a free and fair election in Anambra State on November 16.

INEC said its clarification was based on reports in the media that the non-display of the voter register 30 days before the election was a ploy by the commission to rig the poll in favour of APGA.

It was also alleged that contrary to sections 19 and 20 of the Electoral Act 2011, INEC refused to integrate the supplementary voter register compiled in August, into the 2011 register.

INEC’s spokesman Frank Egbo described the allegations as baseless.

He said before INEC conducted the supplementary voter registration in August, the 2011 voter register was displayed at the centres for three days.

Egbo said the exercise took place between August 19 and 26 and the register was displayed for one week.

According to him, INEC allowed claims and objections, which had been addressed.

The INEC’s spokesman said he did not understand why people believe the commission would work for APGA when the register did not allow the electorate to indicate their party affiliation.

Egbo queried: “How would INEC know that a person has registered to vote for a particular party when he is not required to indicate his or her party on the voter card?”

This explanation followed suspicion that the reason INEC did not want to display the supplementary voter list and integrate it into the 2011 register was because opposition parties had more registered supporters during the exercise.
