  • Proprietor apologises over assault on pupils

The Proprietor of Meteorite Schools, Itele, Ogun State, Mr Joseph Afolayan, yesterday apologised to the Ogun State government over the assault on two pupils of the school.

They were on May 17, 2018 tied to wooden cross and humiliated for their lateness to school.

Speaking with The Nation, Afolayan said the punishment meted to the affected students was to rein them in and dissuade them from flouting the school’s regulations.

He said: ’’ I want to express my profound apologies to the Ogun State government, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology and the Directors of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, over the embarrassment the unfortunate incident caused the state government and the ministry in particular.

He added: ‘The intention of the school management was to inculcate discipline and reprimand errant pupils, however, the embarrassment which the media report of the incident caused the state government was highly regretted.

‘’It is on record that this school until recently has not recorded any similar incident since its inception about 18 years ago. It is on the strength of this that I urge authorities of the state to temper justice with mercy, and I want to assure that the unfortunate incident will not repeat itself again.’’

  • FCTA apologises over `traffic inconvenience’

The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has apologised for inconveniences caused the public by traffic diversion during yesterday’s National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

Transport Secretary of FCTA, Mr Kayode Opeifa, gave the apology in response to complaints by some Abuja residents and motorists over “difficulties” arising from diversion of vehicular movements from routes leading to Eagle Square, the convention venue.

“We apologise for any inconvenience experienced. We could do better, but under the current circumstance we have done well,” Opeifa told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The convention drew thousands of party leaders, delegates and other members across the country, resulting in an upsurge in vehicular and human traffic.

Combined teams of security and traffic management agencies diverted motorists from both ends of Shehu Shagari Way and Ahmadu Bello Way and adjoining routes in the vicinity of the convention venue.

The agencies involved in the assignment included Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCTA Directorate of Road Traffic Services and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Although Opeifa announced on Thursday that motorists would be diverted through alternative routes, some of them and commuters, who spoke to NAN, said they were not aware of any notice for the diversions.

Mr Prince Uchenna, a commercial bus driver plying the Mararaba-Wuse route, said the announcement should have been made at least a week before the convention date.

“On my first trip from Mararaba this morning, I spent almost an hour at Bullet Junction because the place was jammed by vehicles making U-turn.

“I would have avoided that road if I heard the announcement you are talking about,” he told a NAN correspondent.

Opeifa said that except for the Shehu Shagari Way and its approaches that were restricted, most, if not all other parts of the city, remained calm.

He, however, thanked Abuja residents and road users for heeding “our traffic advisory”, and solicited continued support and cooperation from them.

“I call on them to continue to obey our traffic management and security officers who are doing their best to keep traffic moving with pride, dignity and honour.

“They have done so and fantastic too,” Opeifa said.

  • Eko Disco apologises for irregular power supply

The management of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) yesterday apologised to its consumers over the irregular power supply.

General Manager Corporate Communications, Mr Godwin Idemudia, said the epileptic supply was due to last week’s system collapse on the national grid.

Idemudia said the system collapse resulted in nationwide blackout.

The General Manager said for the past five days, power supply to electricity consumers under Eko Disco has been epileptic.

“Until Generation goes up, there is nothing we can do now because National Grid (NG) is the only source of our supply.

“We feel your pains. We are, therefore, appealing to customers to bear with us, as supply will be restored as soon as these repairs are concluded.

“EKEDC highly regrets any inconveniences caused by this irregular supply,” he said.

Nigeria on January 2 was thrown into a nationwide blackout as the country suffered total collapse of its power system grid.

The collapse followed a fire incident on Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd (NGPTC’s) Escravos Lagos Pipeline System, which supplies gas to plants generating 3,182 Mega Watt (MW). All the plants shut down.

These plants include Egbin 1,320MW; Olorunsogo National Integrated Power Plant (NIPP) 676MW; Olorunsogo 338MW; Omotosho NIPP 450MW; Omotosho 338 MW and Paras 60MW power stations.

The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, which confirmed the collapse and the shutdown of gas supply to the plants, described the incident as a setback to the power sector.

  • Rivers APC apologises to Benue gov, over insults from Wike

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has apologised to the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, and the people of the state on the insults from Governor Nyesom Wike.

Rivers APC, yesterday in Port Harcourt, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, stated that Wike, a former Minister of State of Education, should have acted much better.

It said: “As the news continues to pop up about a plan by the Rivers State Governor to execute road projects worth N4 billion in Benue State, the Rivers State Chapter of the APC has maintained a studied silence, believing that it was an episode taken from Hephaestus: a Greek Mythology Circus Tale that will soon come to an end.

“Despite our initial dismissal of the story as mere comic relief from the governor’s deep bag of tragic jokes, it soon became clear that Wike actually made the revelation in an exclusive interview with The Sun newspaper that, not too long ago, named him their Man of the Year – an award that reminds us that the famous Time Magazine named the dictator, Hitler Man of the Year on the eve of World War II in 1938. So also was Stalin given the award twice by Time Magazine in1939 and 1942.

“A day or so later, the Governor of Benue State, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, made a comprehensive response to the fatal comedy by Wike, giving him a thorough dressing down.

“Assuming that the good people of Rivers State have had enough of Wike’s theatre of the absurd, the APC declined to throw itself into the ring, for the sake of saving the people yet another distraction and needless embarrassment.

“Surprisingly to the APC, the Rivers governor has continued with his gory market-square dance, to the unending shame and embarrassment of the good people of Rivers State.

“The APC is dismayed that a governor (just like any other) facing the present crunchy economic times has embarked on making expensive jokes that suggest that Rivers State has overcome its own infrastructural, educational, health and other glaring developmental deficiencies, as to go offering road projects to other states of the nation.

“In a twist of fate, just as Wike disparaged and taunted Ortom for not being able to pay striking pensioners, the next day, pensioners in Rivers State, who are owed up to eight months pensions, marched to the Government House, Port Harcourt. They were joined by suffering staff of Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), whose months of outstanding salaries we have lost count of.”

APC also stated that in Rivers State, many ongoing projects were begging for completion, while it reiterated that Wike had since withdrawn Rivers youths on overseas scholarships, with the state-of-the-arts modern secondary schools started by his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, now Transportation Minister, had been closed and abandoned.

It noted that many of the primary schools had been overgrown with weeds and had become homes for reptiles.

Rivers APC said: “All you see are superficial and deceitful projects that cannot stand the test of time. Yet, Rivers State ranks among Nigeria’s most indebted states, under less than two years of the Wike administration. Yet, the governor thinks he is better off than his Benue State counterpart.

“The APC wishes to apologise to Governor Samuel Ortom and the good people of Benue State for the undeserved insults from Wike. We re-iterate that the Rivers State governor is not near the example of who true Rivers people are.”

The main opposition APC also stated that the tragedy that afflicted Wike on Rivers people had become too well-known to Nigerians, while taking solace that God would surely heal the people of the affliction, much sooner than later.

There are some reasons responsible for this sad turn of event but it is a story for another day. HoS apologises to Lagos Assembly

The Lagos State Head of Service (HoS), Mrs. Folasade Jaji, has apologised to the House of Assembly on the elongation of the tenure of members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The Assembly summoned the Head of Service to appear yesterday to explain the matter. This followed a letter to the House by members of the commission, stating that they had been confirmed for another four-year tenure by Mrs. Jaji.

According to the House, the continuation of tenure by members of the commission was in flagrant disregard of Section 199 of the 1999 Constitution, which states that tenure of public officers should end automatically when due.

Mrs. Jaji said she got an approval from the former Attorney General, Mr. Ade Ipaye and former Governor Babatunde Fashola on February 24, a week after she was appointed.

  • RED CARD ‘MADNESS’: Onazi apologises

    RED CARD ‘MADNESS’: Onazi apologises

There was one sour point of Nigeria’s victory against Chad in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier – Ogenyi Onazi’s red card and the Lazio man has come out to apologise to fans and teammates for his ‘silly behaviour’ that forced the referee to send him off.

The incident occurred in the 79th minute when players of the Chadian team were swooping around the referee protesting a penalty awarded against them after substitute Odion Ighalo went down inside the box under a clumsy challenge from a defender and like a train without breaks Onazi ran into one of the players of the away team –pushing him to the floor like it was a bull fight.

That moment of madness prompted the referee to issue the former youth International a straight red inside the Ahmadu Bello stadium in Kaduna, meaning he will be out of Nigeria’s next three qualifying campaigns which includes the crucial double header against former African Champions Egypt.

‘I let my teammates and loyal fans down with my action on the pitch today. I apologise for my actions. Thank you for your usual support,’ Onazi posted on his official twitter handle.

‘Thank you all for your support and praises, even when I don’t deserve them. I don’t ever feel like I have the right to refuse the criticism of the same people who praise me even when I don’t deserve it.’

The win against Chad represents Stephen Keshi’s first win after his reappointment as manager of the national team but he will have to do without the services of Onazi when the Super Eagles play their second Group G game against Tanzania in September.

  • Omeruo apologises to Boro fans

    Omeruo apologises to Boro fans

Middlesbrough FC defender, Kenneth Josiah Omeruo has said he is aware of the Riverside’s fans criticism of his performance this season and that he will soon overcome his present trying times.

Omeruo and few other Boro players were singled out for bashing after the club lost two out of the last four games including a home loss to Leeds United and the unfortunate 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

Boro jumped back to the top of the Championship league table without Omeruo in the squad on Tuesday night after a 3-0 home drubbing of Millwall but the Super Eagles’ defender has told SportingLife that he was happy that his club returned to winning ways after the weekend loss.

The Chelsea on loan star told SportingLife that Boro’s fans shouldn’t be too hard on him since as humans we are prone to make mistakes at some point but he stressed that he has been putting in extra effort at training sessions to ensure that he overcomes his present challenges.

“I will say I am very sorry for some of the mistakes I made recently and I take responsibility for them. I am happy that we are back to the top of the table because it is our objective to ensure that we qualify for the premiership automatically than playing in the unpredictable play off.

“I will continue to work on the lapses noticed in me but I will beg the fans to be calm  and understand,” Omeruo was quoted by his advisor, Chika Akujobi.
