    Ambode, Amosun, Aregbesola, others mourn

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday commiserated with Ibadan people and the Oyo State government on the death of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, described the late monarch as a well accomplished Nigerian.

“Oba Odulana was an accomplished Nigerian. He gave his all to serve the country in various capacities.

He was a seasoned civil servant and a thoroughbred politician, which saw him become a minister in the First Republic.

“His contributions towards the establishment of both primary and secondary schools in the old Western Region cannot be forgotten in a hurry.

“On behalf of the people of Lagos State, I wish to express our heartfelt condolence to the people of Oyo State. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” Ambode said.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun described the late monarch as one of those who laid the foundation for the present day Nigeria.

“A World War II veteran, the late Oba Odugade was a seasoned civil servant and a thoroughbred politician, who later became a minister in the First Republic.

“He was involved in the establishment of both primary and secondary schools in the old Western Region and voluntarily retired, before being elected to represent his people in the 1959 pre-independence House of Representatives,” Amosun said.

His Osun State counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola,  commiserated with the family.

The governor described the late monarch as fatherly, quiet, peaceful and a bridge-builder.

In a statement by his Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, the governor said the monarch’s death has left a huge vacuum in the traditional rulers’ council in Oyo State.

He lauded the late monarch for always championing peaceful co-existence as well as fostering cordial relationship among diverse groups.

According to him, the monarch’s reign was peaceful, remarkable and progressive even though it was brief.

Kogi State governor-elect Yahaya Bello described the late Olubadan as a unifying factor who used his position to transform the economy and cultural awareness of the Ibadan people.

In his condolence message, Bello described the late Olubadan as “a great Nigerian who will be missed for his unifying aura and undying commitment to the transformation of Ibadan and Oyo State as a whole”.

He added: “The late Oba was a father to all Nigerians and through his actions he greatly showed the receptive spirit of  Ibadan people by accommodating Nigerians from various parts of the country.

“By conferring chieftaincy titles on non-Yoruba, he succeeded in making Ibadan a home for all.

“During his reign, he attracted development to the ancient city of Ibadan and promoted the city as a blend of traditional power and modernisation.

“I wish to commiserate with Governor Abiola Ajimobi and the people of Ibadan over this painful loss.”

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, called on the Olubadan-in-Council to ensure a smooth transition.

He noted that one of the beautiful things in Ibadan chieftaincy is the rancuor-free manner in which successors are chosen.

He said: “The late monarch was epitome of honesty, decency and a good symbol of Yoruba culture and tradition, who lived an unblemished life.

“The late Olubadan played his roles as a father to all within his domain very well. I urged Ibadan people to sustain his values.”

Diversion of arms funds heartless –Aregbesola

The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday described the diversion of money meant for procuring arms for Nigeria soldiers to fight insurgency as a monumental scandal.

The governor stated this at the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and laying of wreath in honour of fallen soldiers held at the State House of Assembly in Osogbo.

He commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in unravelling the crime.

He insisted that all the guilty must be brought to justice to forestall future occurrence.

This year’s Armed Forces Remembrance is the first to be held at the State House of Assembly after the cenotaph was constructed next to the parliament.

The governor stressed that the symbolism of holding the ceremony at the military cemetery was impeccable and bringing it to the parliament was of even greater significance.

Aregbesola added that the Parliament is the symbol of authority of the people and so the fallen soldiers “being celebrated today in the midst of the people for their gallantry and supreme sense of patriotism.”

He noted that every well-meaning Nigerian is of the hope that all those involved in the mismanagement of the arms fund will receive full retribution.

Aregbesola lamented the situation where some of the soldiers caught and indicted have been pardoned and some losing their commission while others face uncertain future, said it is pertinent that a fresh inquiry be set up so that justice ?will be done.

According to him, “It is even a monumental scandal of unimaginable proportion that funds meant for procuring arms for soldiers are shared among members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) without the least compunction.

“I commend the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in unravelling this heinous crime and I sincerely hope that all those involved will receive full retribution.

“Some of the soldiers caught in the maelstrom and indicted have been pardoned but some have lost their commissions while others face uncertain future.

“Considering the circumstances of this unusual event, it is pertinent that a fresh inquiry be set up so that justice will be given to all those involved and our gallant soldiers will not be punished unjustly.”

Alaafin installs Aregbesola as Omoluabi of Yoruba

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has named Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola the Omoluabi of Yoruband.

The monarch, who was at the Government House Osogbo to present the award, said the governor has always been at the forefront of projecting the “Omoluabi ethos”.

“Ogbeni Aregbesola has always led along the line of a true “Omoluabi”.

The Yoruba are a tribe that always instill in their children and the youth all the characters of a responsible and well brought up individual.

“I have studied the governor’s leadership style and discovered that he is the only one who has projected the “Omoluabi ethos” of the Yoruba.

“I want to urge the people of Osun to assist the present administration with the payment of their taxes. The present administration has done so much in terms of provision of social amenities, such as construction of good roads, provision of affordable health care facilities, assistance for the aged.”

Aregbesola: fresh opportunities waiting to be tapped

Text of Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s broadcast to usher in the New Year

I congratulate you all for seeing to the end of the old year, 2015, and the beginning of the New Year, 2016.

The old year was particularly interesting and brought its own blessings, triumphs and challenges. It was a year of national election during which we voted for a president of the people in the true sense of it. It was a landmark year when we had and took a great opportunity to break from a ruinous and anti-developmental ruling clique bent on taking the nation to the dark ages, and began a transition to a prosperous, secure and promising era superintended by genuine leadership that rose from the people. It was in a true sense the year of liberation and freedom for the Nigerian people.

In that past year, in spite of our dire financial challenges, we fulfilled our obligation to the people by providing security, healthcare, education and enhanced environment for economic activities. You will recall that many of our legacy schools were completed and commissioned in 2015. Our administration’s flagship high school, Wole Soyinka Government High School in Ejigbo was also commissioned. We signed many Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with reputable institutions, including the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, the French government and a Chinese consortium for huge developmental programmes and job creation endeavours guaranteed to bring giant developmental strides for our state and people.

That great year, ironically, also witnessed dwindling national economic fortunes. The pillaging of the national treasury that began with the ancient regime was compounded by continued precipitous drop in oil prices. The undisputable evidence of this fall is that a barrel of oil which went for $140 in 2013 sold for $31.71 yesterday (December 31). There are even unsavoury prognosis that before long, it might drop below $20.

The effect of this sharp reduction is that the distributable pool of the Federation Accounts that hit a zenith of N1.2 trillion in 2012 dropped to a new low of N369 billion in November allocations shared in December 2015.

The stark implication of this for the Nigerian governments at the federal, states and local levels is that revenue derivable from the Federation Accounts, as the basis for running government, has been reduced to little or nothing.

It means for us that the era of unearned revenue has come to an end. We are now entering into a new and special period where it is imperative for us to work for our own money before we can spend it. This period demands innovation, creativity, productivity, industry and wealth creation.

I am therefore asking of you all, that whatever your vocation may be, you must work harder, be innovative and double your productivity from now on. Whatever your estate: traders, farmers, civil servants, artisans, transporters, workers, corporate executives and the self-employed, you need to do more than before.

Productivity is the key to tiding over and making the best of the special time we are in. It requires of – especially – the youth and school leavers to embrace the philosophy of hard work and innovation. This means finding engagement in farming and skill acquisition, instead of relying on general academic qualification in order to take advantage of this special period. No one must be idle again.

Every challenge brings its own opportunities. Fresh opportunities are waiting to be tapped in this special time. It only requires that we reach into our natural God-given ingenuity and endowments.

For us, we are already working in the areas of agriculture, solid mineral development, tourism and manufacturing.

Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. The history of development has taught us that humans are the primal agent of development. Development begins with thinking and coming up with ideas; only humans do that. These ideas are given life with their incorporation into policies which are then implemented to form an unending cycle of enterprise and wealth creation.

Development in machinery and robotics notwithstanding, humans still drive work and put even machines and animals to any endeavour.

Humans also form markets. Where there are humans, there is something to be sold, a service to be rendered and a money to be made, of course legitimately. We only need an atmosphere of peace, mutual respect and tolerance, even if we lawfully compete against each other. As long as we remain a people, united and resourceful, no force on earth can halt our march of greatness.

The government will do everything within its powers to maintain its covenant with you. We will not leave you alone – hopeless and helpless. We are in it together. We shall provide leadership, show the way, do what we say and walk the talk. From the present situation, we will lead and guide you to new opportunities from which we will create new wealth and bring prosperity for all. Only the lazy has no place.

We shall continue to provide security for lives and propertyand promote peace. This is the primary social good on which other goods rest upon. We shall also continue to provide healthcare service by putting our hospitals and medical institutions in the best shape. We are not going to slow down on education. It has been our priority and we are determined to make it our greatest legacy. The immortal words of Confucius is apt here. He said: “If your plan is for a year, plant rice; if your plan is for 10 years, plant trees; but if your plan is for 100 years, educate children.”

The Federal Government has spoken its mind with some assurances on the challenges facing the nation. I am assuring you that solutions are being sought to the nation’s financial problem and every effort is being made to cushion the effect, one of which was the concessionary loans provided for states last year to offset the backlog of salary arrears. We must support them in our own way by working hard, create wealth and adding value to the commonwealth more than we take from it.

It has also become necessary that you maximally support the government by paying your taxes, rates, levies and fines to the government. Every government is established on the sound foundation that it will be upheld and sustained with the taxes of the people. People place legitimate demands on their government only because they have a sense of ownership that comes from supporting that government with tax payment. This consciousness has been dulled in the past because the government has been supported largely with free and unearned oil money. That is now past. The consequences of direct ownership of government must be reawakened and you must enthusiastically pay your tax.

I will like to thank all the people of the State of Osun for your kind support, understanding and unflinching loyalty to our government from time immemorial. I thank the women and their groups, market women and men, traders, artisans, civil servants (for their profound sense of understanding and cooperation with government), workers, students, transporters, commercial motorcyclists, employers of labour, organised private sector, the business community, non-governmental organisations, community based organisations, youth organisations, political parties, traditional rulers, community leaders and religious leaders.

We have overcome obstacles, taken giant strides and buoyed with confidence to face any challenge in our way because we have firm assurances of your continued support. I thank youall.

I commiserate with the Ijesa people, especially the traders at Atakumosa market, over the fire that razed the market recently. I also commiserate with the proprietress of Bovas Filling Station, Osogbo, over the gas explosion at the station, occasioning the loss of a family of four, including young children. Our hearts are also with the people of Ibadan, Onitsha and other places ravaged by fire in 2015. May such disaster never reoccur in our nation.

On behalf of the government and people of the State of Osun, I offer heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the northeastern states of Nigeria being buffeted by insurgency. I pray the efforts of government will succeed and their afflictions will soon come to an end. We stand with the parents and families of the missing Chibok girls at this trying period in their lives. We pray that their sorrows and pains will end soon when the girls are found and reunited with their loved ones.

It is my earnest prayer that the New Year will be peaceful and usher in fresh opportunities, goodness, prosperity and abundance to all and sundry.

I wish you a happy and blessed 2016.

  • Why Osun is passionate about education-Aregbesola

Why Osun is passionate about education-Aregbesola

The Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, says the passion with which his administration is pursuing its education policy stems from the conviction that education is the fulcrum of human development.

The governor stated this while receiving a 35 year old compilation of past Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) questions and answers produced and presented to him by the leadership of the Coalition of All Progressives Supporters Group at the Government House, Osogbo.

The compendium contains past questions and answers of English and Mathematics from 1980 to 2015.

Noting that only education can guarantee the improvement and betterment of human conditions, the government added that his administration is passionate about education so as to equip the upcoming generation to explore nature to its extreme possibilities.

Expressing delight that in spite of the campaign of calumny being orchestrated by certain individuals and groups to discredit policies and programs of his government, a group like the Coalition still believes and support the government, Aregbesola said the gesture is highly impressive and will serve as an elixir for the state government to do more for the youth.

He said: “We are indeed passionate about education, because there cannot be any improvement in our condition if we do not equip our upcoming generations. We are determined to develop and equip them to be able to explore nature to the extreme possibilities so that nature will no longer be a threat to them.

“Education is life itself; it guarantees improvement and betterment of human conditions. Without education, there is no succession. Education guarantees trustworthy and reliable succession. And no one would want destruction for his succession. This is why education occupies uppermost place in our heart.”

Earlier in his remark, the National Youth Leader of the Group, Comrade Mojeed Yaya, commended the governor for making education attractive to all children in the state, saying his giant strides  has  bridged the gap between the poor and the rich.

The governor, who prayed for the repose of the lawmaker’s soul, extended his “profound condolence to the  family, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the people”.

The Chairman, Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, in a statement, said: “It is shocking that the late Makinde died at this critical period that he is needed in his immediate and political family.

“In Osun Assembly, we are really saddened to hear of the death of one of us.

“We will mourn deeply his passing due to his valuable contributions to deliberations in the Assembly.

“Politics apart, his oppositional engagement as a minority leader has assisted the Sixth Assembly to arrive at reasonable conclusions on several issues.”

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in a message by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, described Makinde as a gentleman endowed with attributes of “Omoluabi’’.

According to him, his positive impacts will remain indelible on the minds of not only inhabitants of Ile-Ife but the entire state, having patriotically served as Ife Central Local Government boss.

Ambode, Aregbesola, Ayade, Amosun, Dickson, Wada urge peaceful co-existence, hope

GOVERNORS, in their goodwill messages, have felicitated with the citizenry over the Eid-el-Maulud and Christmas celebrations.

They urged them to embrace the virtues of love and peaceful co-existence.

The governors advised them to refrain from activities that could trigger unrest and disunity, calling for prayers for divine intervention over the country’s economic challenges.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, in his message to residents, said as the nation anticipates the change promised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) governments at the centre and state levels, it was only through peaceful co-existence and atmosphere that any positive change could materialise.

“The season of Christmas is one that exemplifies the virtues of love and peaceful co-existence. We must continue to extend a hand of love and live as one family, irrespective of our creed or colour. We must also continue to respect each other’s right to live freely and peacefully”, the governor said in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna.

He said the security challenges facing the country should not be used as an avenue to create division along ethnic and religious lines by some politicians, who, he added, were engaging in name-calling of political opponents.

Ambode said Nigeria  has continued to draw strength from its diversity, saying that the citizens  must, therefore, stand together and resist any attempt by any individual or group of persons to highlight such ethnic differences to further their selfish ends or fan embers of disunity.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola asked Muslims all over the world to use the occasion of this year’s celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad to pray for divine intervention over the country’s economic challenges.

Though the governor recognised the global nature of the economic meltdown, he said Muslims have a great role to play in offering prayers for God’s direction and interventions.

He asked the adherents to remember the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and apply them in their personal lives.

Aregbesola said in doing that, humanity would regain the lost essence of living and there would be a return to the path of God.

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade enjoined Christians to “reflect on the import of Christmas brought about by the birth of Jesus Christ and its redemptive hope to millions of Christians around the world”.

The governor, in the goodwill message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, urged Christians to use the opportunity of the celebration to rededicate themselves to the values of love, peace, sacrifice and tolerance as embodied in the birth of Jesus Christ.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun described as “a divine message of love, unity and religious tolerance,” the fact that this years’ celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad almost coincided with that of the birth of Jesus Christ.

He urged Christians and Muslim faithful to live in unity and love at all times and eschew all forms of intolerance and violence.

Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dickson called on Bayelsans to imbibe the positive attributes of peace, love and forgiveness, which Christ propagated, lived and died for.

Dickson reminded the people of the importance of peace, noting that it remains a major catalyst to any meaning development, especially under a democratic dispensation.

Kogi State governor Idris Wada congratulated Nigerians for witnessing this year’s Eid-el-Maulud, Christmas and end of year festivities and enjoined them to use the atmosphere  for the revival of brotherhood and service to humanity.

The governor, in a message by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Mr. Jacob Edi, urged Nigerians to use the Christmas season for meditation and sober reflection.

Aregbesola said he was prudent in the finance of the project and challenged anyone to verify the cost.

Aregbesola added that the belief in building a better society has guided state’s policies and aspirations on education, noting that the present administration in Osun has revolutionalised education.
