DEMOCRATIC VICTORY OVER THE TYRANNY OF POWER
After an unnecessarily tense, tortuous and even traumatic process, the Independent National Electoral Commission this morning declared me as the winner of the Osun state governorship election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). On behalf of my party, we are delighted to claim victory for our hard work, focus and dedication in this election. I thank the Almighty God for our triumph at the polls, against all odds.
To the good people of Osun State goes our unflinching gratitude. We salute your steadfastness, courage, loyalty, commitment and fierce determination to defend your sovereign rights. You have demonstrated in this election that in a democracy, power truly belongs to the people. I am humbled and honoured by your trust and abiding faith in me and my party. I pledge that your confidence in us shall never be betrayed or taken for granted.
Ordinarily, this should be a moment of joy and celebration consequent upon the hard earned triumph of the people’s will. However, this election shows that democracy is still gravely endangered in Nigeria. We witnessed gross abuse of power and, of due process before, during, and even after the actual voting process. It is so sad and unfortunate that what should be a normal, routine process was maliciously allowed to snowball in to a needless virtual war by the Federal Government and the PDP.
Osun state was unduly militarized in an unprecedented manner through criminal intimidation and psychological assault on our people. This election witnessed an abuse of our security agencies and amounted to a corruption of their professional ethics and integrity.
The security agencies were unprofessionally utilized in Osun state to harass, intimidate and oppress the people whose taxes are used to pay their salaries and provide their arms. Hundreds of leaders, supporters, sympathizers and agents of our party were arrested and detained. Also, hundreds of other innocent citizens including women and the aged were harassed, brutalized and traumatized. In spite of this condemnable repression and abuse of human rights, the unflagging spirit of our people triumphed.
Our victory is due to the steadfastness and resolute determination of our people to assert and defend their rights. The PDP obviously did all it could in a most desperate manner to steal the people’s mandate. A critical analysis of the elections shows a trend of general low voter turnout largely because of the atmosphere of deliberate tyranny and fear caused by the excessive militarization of the state. Despite our victory, it is pertinent to condemn and also point out the fact that the number of accredited voters in most local governments was less than half of registered voters. Against this trend, it is curious that the bulk of Senator the PDP votes came from only four Local Governments- namely Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North and Ife South. This suggests an inexplicable large turnout in his stronghold which is a curious departure from the general trend of voting across the state.
The outcome of this election, once again, shows the unswerving determination of our people to ensure that democracy triumphs in Nigeria. We have sent a strong signal to all and sundry that no might is powerful enough to thwart the will of the people. This should always strengthen our resolve to ensure that as from now on, every vote must not only be counted but must count in this country. Nobody or party must ever exercise power unreasonably at any level except in accordance with the will of the people to whom sovereignty belongs.
Let me assure the good people of Osun state that I appreciate that this victory is a reward for our hard work and commitment to the welfare of our people. I promise that we shall not rest on our oars but shall be spurred to work even harder with all well meaning people of the State of Osun and the generality of Nigerians to continue to enjoy your trust and support. You can be assured that we will leave no stone unturned in our continued effort to transform Osun into a land of progress, prosperity and peace for all with renewed fervour. I realize that this victory and the challenges we went through is a call to greater service and sustained commitment to our people. I pledge a rededication of myself to the service of our people and the strengthening of democratic values in Osun and Nigeria generally. Our country remains in political bondage and we must set her free.

    Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola

Aregbesola to FG: Be committed to democracy

The Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Saturday’s governorship poll has charged the Federal Government to show commitment to the country’s democracy.

Speaking shortly after he was accredited alongside his wife, Serifat, and children, at exactly 10.45am at Ifofin ward 8, unit 1 polling centre in Ilesa, the governor condemned the clampdown on chieftains and members of the APC across the state by security agents.

He said: “They will have themselves to blame if they scuttle the democracy. You can see people’s patriotism and commitment to democracy. If they can be 20 percent committed like the ordinary people, the nation would have been the best for it. What they are doing by picking our chieftains and members is barbaric.

“They have been arresting, harassing and molesting our people for no just reason. The democracy is about making your choice freely without being hounded.”

The governor said with his observation so far things are going well with the voting process, except for the arrest, intimidation and harassment of the APC chieftains by the Peoples Democratic Party, using the security agents.

Meanwhile, voters’ turn out in Osogbo, the state capital and Ilesa was very impressive.

People started leaving their homes as early as 6.30am for polling centres.

Despite the early morning drizzle, many trekked long distances to polling centres in the two cities.

    “Let’s return Aregbesola as governor”

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mr. Tunde Ojo, has urged the people of Oriade and Obokun council areas of the state to vote massively for Governor Rauf Aregbesola tomorrow.

Speaking during the distribution of branded campaign materials to party members and residents, Ojo said: “ The Ogbeni Aregbesola has performed well and he deserved to be returned once again as governor of our great state of Osun. His foot prints are everywhere in the state especially in the areas of socio-economic and infrastructure development, therefore, I want to admonished you to reelect him as governor for the second term.

“He is the only governor that understands what community or rural development means and he has demonstrated his firm understanding of that so far, please troop out in your large numbers to vote for him on Saturday,” he added.

  • Obanikoro plans to harm APC members, says Aregbesola

Obanikoro plans to harm APC members, says Aregbesola

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, should be held responsible, if anything bad happens to any All Progressives Congress (APC) member.

He said he had credible information that Obanikoro and Police Affairs Minister Jelili Adesiyan had instructed security personnel to kill two APC members.

The governor spoke yesterday at the launch of the students’ smart identity card at the Salvation Army Middle School in Alekuwodo, Osogbo.

Urging security agents to play by the rules, he condemned what happened on Monday at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, where APC campaigners were turned back by security men and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaigners were allowed in.

Querying Obanikoro’s presence in Osun, Aregbesola said APC members had been told to be law-abiding but may react if pushed to the wall.

He said: “How could the PDP be this desperate? Obanikoro and Adesiyan told security agents that by the time two APC members are killed, other members will learn from it and the APC’s stiff resistance would be destroyed.

“We urge security agencies not to allow themselves to be used by these PDP ministers, whose party was terrorising our state before the inception of this administration.

“I am using this medium to tell security operatives that Osun people are law-abiding; they have always been contributing to the payment of your salaries and you are not supposed to harass them with the guns which were bought for you with tax money.”

On the identity card for students, the governor said Information Communication Technology (ICT) is among other promising paths his administration has chosen to tread to develop the state.

Osun is the first state to provide students with an identification card containing their biometrics.

With the card, each student is a uniquely identifiable individual and cannot be mistaken for another person. With it, the government can identify genuine students in public schools and access their information at the push of a button.

Aregbesola said the O’MEALS and other supplies to pupils would be coordinated through the smart card.

He said it would eliminate fraud and accounting errors.

The governor said: “We have applied it to our revenue collection and tax administration and got good results. Immediately we deployed it in our revenue collection system, our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) improved by 100 per cent from N300 million to N600 million.”

  • Aregbesola ‘ll win, says opinion poll

Aregbesola ‘ll win, says opinion poll

OSUN State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will win the Saturday governorship election, if there is free and fair election, according to a survey by the Yoruba Academy.

The group, which conducted a survey in the state’s 30 local  governments, also reported that female voters may turn out more than their male counterparts.

The findings were based on the analysis of voters’ preference, based on the pedigree of the candidates, performance of the governor, disposition of the spectrum of local voters and expectation about free and fair exercise.

According to the survey, which was conducted in the last week of July, Aregbesola will defeat his rival, Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  in over 24 local governments. These include Ayedaade, Ayedire, Atakunmosa East and West, Ede North and South, Egbedore, Irepodun, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, Ife East and South and Ila. Others are Ilesa East and West, Irewole, Iwo, Obokun, Odo-Otin, Olorunda, Orolu and Osogbo.

PDP may garner more votes than the APC in Boripe, Boluwaduro, Ife Central and Ife North, the report stated.

The survey by the Yoruba Academy has trailed the poll survey by the TSN-RSM, a survey group, which is a member of the Gallup International, According to the previous survey, the governor will win 73 per cent of the votes. But  the survey  also revealed that public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dropped by 10 points.

According to TSN-RSM,  “the APC continues to dominate the political landscape in Osun State, judging by its performance on all key indicators evaluated. It scored highest and also increased in rating on first mention, sympathy and voting intention.”

It added: “The governor, Rauf Aregbesola, is the candidate of choice by Osun voters with 73 per cent lead over other candidates. This is a clear indication that the choice of Osun voters in the next governorship race is Governor Rauf Aregbesola. Meanwhile, Senator Iyiola Omisore of the PDP comes a far distant second, polling 19 per cent, representing a two per cent decline from the earlier survey.

On gender disparity, the Yoruba Academy reported 38 per cent male voting and 62 per cent female voting for the APC and 33 per cent male and 67 per cent female for the PDP. This is distinct from the general voting population.

However, the public perception of the electoral commission reported by both TSN-RSM and the Yoruba Academy are identical. While TSN-RSM reported that public confidence in the INEC has waned, the academy reported that most respondents showed eagerness for a free and fair election where votes will count.

  • Osun people’s quest for continuity

    Osun people’s quest for continuity

OLUMIDE LAWAL examines the achievements of the Aregbesola Adminitration in the last three and half years and contends that there is basis for continuity in the State of Living Springs.

I believe that all men and women of peace should commend the present administration in Osun for the far-reaching development programmes it has initiated for the benefits of our people. It is our duty to see to it, that these positive programmes of development succeed and the momentum maintained. Our people should commit themselves to this noble cause. What others could not do during their tenure, Aregbesola has done in three and half years of coming into office, very prudently and transparently.

Indeed, anything is possible if we have faith, the will and heart. I know we all have the will to play our parts in this campaign for accelerated development in Osun State. I know we have faith in the present regime and we have the hearts to face the challenges ahead. Our people are urged to support this administration’s laudable programmes of economic reconstruction, social justice, unity and religious tolerance, that will guarantee our present happiness and future prosperity. Test of faith can only be ascertained by God Almighty, in whose hands are the sovereignty of heaven and earth.

The cause of Aregbesola’s regime is the cause of the common people and the less privileged members of our society-the villagers, the labourers, the farmers and those millions of unemployed. It is a cause that compels our serious attention and commitment.

What is therefore left for us as a people of Osun State is to make a pledge from now on that we will bury all our differences and come out fully to consolidate on the achievements of Ogbeni Aregbesola.

Let the politicians pledge, that they will not misuse the trust and responsibility that are thrusted upon them by our people. Let them pledge, that they will speak for those who have no voice, and to remember those who are forgotten. Let them pledge that they will love us as themselves and that looting of public treasuries will not be their major preoccupations. Let them remember Hisab-accountability before God Almighty, on the day that all would be assembled before Him.

The challenges for the electorate is to give voices and votes to people of integrity and for those fundamental democratic principles of human freedom, free economic enterprises, self respect and accountability.

Indeed, Aregbesola’s regime has offered us new hope. New hope of gainful employment and self respect for those thousands of our school-leavers, graduates-skilled and unskilled through O’YES.New hope of economic recovery through the dedicated pursuit of individualistic and collective approach to agrarian revolution and small-scale industrialization in the state through O’REAP.New hope of good quality of life for the rural populace through the faithful execution of populist-oriented programmes, like the DAGBOLU scheme, through O’HUB.

Socially, we must build bridges of understanding. And economically, we must narrow the wide gap between the rich and the poor, if we want peace and stability in this country. Indeed, we stand at a great turning point, when Osun State and indeed Nigeria is looking for a new direction, through a second term for Aregbesola and an APC federally controlled government.

A time like this calls for leadership like Aregbesola that can set a firm focus and positive vision for the future and rally the people of Osun behind it. We thank God that at this point in time in OsunState, we have such leader in the person of Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola. Let me commend all his good efforts toward ensuring progress in the state since he took charge. However, the governor himself must continue to reinforce the attributes of good leadership with which he is already identified and make more use of home-grown people to man key positions in his second term in office.

The school merger programme by the government should be vigorously pursued, possibly with modifications. The structures being put in place are of world standard and a legacy that will outlive Aregbesola. I am impressed that the various sites demolished are now been beautified with walkways. Definitely, we need to embrace modernity in all aspects of our life, though no changes come about without temporary pains. Only change is permanent.

Aregbesola government has been listening not only to the clamorous voices of the priviledged few and the opportunists at the corridor of power, but also the hardly audible voices of the proverbial silent majority.

The governor has declared that his administration does not presume to have a monopoly of knowledge. He has brought ‘dissenters’ into policy discussions, rather than freeze them out. He has invited constructive criticism, because he believes the critics have a right to be heard. We should realize that the lamps of enlightenment are lit by the spark of controversy and that their flame can be snuffed out by the blanket of consensus.

In this regard, we must concede, that out experience in this state between 2003 to 2010 was not particularly edifying. We saw hatred and sorrow on our faces waiting for love and happiness. We saw families divided against themselves, waiting to be brought together again. To find answers to all these unwholesome acts, we must look within ourselves. Let us forget the past and come together to build this state, for nobody else can do it for us because it belongs to all of us. We must close all sullen pages and open a new chapter.

Let us give unalloyed support to Ogbeni Aregbesola, so that those who were left out in the cold in those years of inaction, could be accommodated for positive contributions. Let us know that we cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another; until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices.

Let us remember that if we succeed, generations to come will say of us now living, that we mastered our moment. That we helped to make Osun safe and prosperous to live in. This is our summon to greatness. Let us pray that strength and courage abundant be given to us; that the good that lies in each of our hearts may day by day be magnified. That we may come to see more clearly not what divides us, but that which unites us. That the true spirit of this time – its joy, its hopes and above all its binding faith may live among us. Osun State must always be many steps ahead of others.

We must build a virile state and improve the standard of living of our people, because the worth of a nation is the worth of the men and women in it. We must not lose hope, for in ashes there can still be spark. For as the passage in one of the Shakespeare works put it “there is a tide in the affairs of men which taken in time leads to good fortune.” We must not allow this golden opportunity to slip by.

The prelude to August 9th governorship election should be devoid of violence and acrimony in whatever forms. We should know, that our leaders can only govern over the living. Both APC and PDP should call their supporters to order, as there is no cause to make the forthcoming election, a matter of do or die.

Aregbesola is working. Osun is progressing. For Aregbesola, it is a goal scored in a grand style, after an epic and protracted play against concerted forces of fate.

    Osun 2014: For Aregbesola it’s a goal

I believe that all men and women of peace should commend the present administration in Osun for the far-reaching development programmes it has initiated for the benefits of our people. It is our duty to see to it, that these positive programmes succeed and the momentum maintained.

Our people are urged to support this administration’s laudable programmes of economic reconstruction, social justice, unity and religious tolerance that will guarantee our present happiness and future prosperity. Test of faith can only be ascertained by God Almighty, in whose hands are the sovereignty of heaven and earth.

The cause of Aregbesola’s regime is the cause of the common people and the less privileged members of society – the villagers, the labourers, farmers and those millions of unemployed. It is a cause that compels serious attention and commitment.

Let the politicians pledge, that they will not misuse the trust and responsibility that are thrust upon them by the people. Let them pledge, that they will speak for those who have no voice, and to remember those who are forgotten. Let them pledge that they will love us as themselves and that looting of public treasuries will not be their major preoccupations. Let them remember accountability before God Almighty, on the day that all would be assembled before Him.

The challenges for the electorate is to give voices and votes to people of integrity and for those fundamental democratic principles of human freedom, free economic enterprises, self respect and accountability.

Indeed, Aregbesola’s regime has offered us new hope; new hope of gainful employment and self respect for those thousands of our school-leavers, graduates-skilled and unskilled through O’YES. New hope of economic recovery through the dedicated pursuit of individual and collective approach to agrarian revolution and small-scale industrialization through O’REAP. New hope of good quality of life for the rural populace through the faithful execution of populist-oriented programmes, like the DAGBOLU scheme, through O’HUB.

Socially, we must build bridges of understanding. And economically, we must narrow the wide gap between the rich and the poor, if we want peace and stability in this country. Indeed, we stand at a great turning point, when Osun State and indeed Nigeria is looking for a new direction, through a second term for Aregbesola and an APC federally-controlled government.

A time like this calls for leadership like Aregbesola that can set a firm focus and positive vision for the future and rally the people of Osun behind it. We thank God that at this point in time in Osun State, we have such leader in the person of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

I am impressed that the various sites demolished are now being beautified with walkways. Definitely, we need to embrace modernity in all aspects of our life, though no changes come about without temporary pains. Only change is permanent.

Aregbesola government has been listening not only to the clamorous voices of the privileged few and those at the corridor of power, but also the hardly audible voices of the proverbial silent majority.

In this regard, we must concede, that out experience between 2003 and 2010 was not particularly edifying. We saw hatred and sorrow on our faces waiting for love and happiness. We saw families divided against themselves waiting to be brought together again. To find answers to all these unwholesome acts, we must look within ourselves. Let us forget the past and come together to build this state, for nobody else can do it for us because it belongs to all of us. We must close all sullen pages and open a new chapter.

Let us give unalloyed support to Aregbesola, so that those who were left out in the cold in those years of inaction, could be accommodated for positive contributions. Let us know that we cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another; until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices.
