‘Aregbesola will win 70 per cent of the votes’

Three days to the August 9 governorship election in Osun State, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, an activist and Director-General of De Raufs Volunteer Group, which is championing the ideals and reelection bid of Governor Rauf Aregbesola is confident that the governor will get another four-year term. He spoke with ADEKUNLE YUSUF.

Long before Governor Rauf Aregbesola declared interest in running for a second term in office, De Raufs has been busy campaigning for his reelection. Why is your group so passionate about having the governor win reelection?

What I want to say on that is very simple. It took us months to study Governor Rauf Aregbesola. During our investigation, we unraveled some information that many people may not be familiar with. I am not saying that he is the best in the world, but among the few that do not attach importance to what we call ephemeral of office, he stands out.

What do you mean by that?

He is not somebody who allows the mentality of the so called public office holders who carry  everything on their heads thinking that without them, the generality of the people that they are destined to rule cannot survive. He is one of the few that believe truly in the emancipation of the people by using the instrumentality of office to change their lives for the beter. He is among afew politicians that will not betray the trust of the people – and it is very rare to see politicians that will not tell lies. I am teling you, sincerely speaking, that Aregbesola does not tell lies. And once a leader fails to tell lies, he allows the fear of God to run in his veins.

Once you have God, you have everything.  I have tested Rauf Aregbesola. In a week, I spend close to seventy-eight to seventy-nine hours with him. It affords me the opportunity to know him critically and from inside his character and life. Whatever you discussed with him, he will not tell anybody; he maintains what we call secret. Once you discuss anything with him in confidence, he will not discuss it with anybody immediately you leave, including his wife. I am saying this authoritatively. I was with him one night. Somebody was talking to an elderly person trying to cover the governor on some issues. I just heard the governor’s voice saying, “I did not say that. That is not what I told you. Tell people the exact thing I told you. I don’t tell lies and I hate people lying using my name.”  But if you ask the governor why he is doing that to the man, he will just tell you that the issue is between the two of them.

Apart from the fact that he is not a liar, he belives so much in God. He has reduced the attraction that people have given to the office of the governor. That means if you have the likes of him as president of this country, things will change. In his character, he has shown to the public that he is just a representative of the people and that it is the people that have power over him; that he is not the lord over the people. He behaves in a way that shows that without the people he canot be there. He brings everyone on board because he does not like division or segregation. Sometimes I don’t feel comfortable about some people around him, people I think are not honest. But he will say he can manage everybody. But immediately Aregbesola discovers you are not honest, he will still manage and tolerate you till you expose yourself. I don’t have temperament for such but he has. There are uncountable qualities this man has that I have never seen in our conventional politicians in my entire life. When Aregbesola is committed to an idea, he puts his life there. That makes him to stand out among our politicians. Even sometimes when he describes himself as a politician, I do tell him that he is not a politician. He will ask me why and I will tell him that a conventional politician will not behave the he behaves.

Aregbesola is also a leader that is ready and in a hurry to fix everything. That is why he wants to give his best in the area of education, thinking for the children of the people. He says he too is a product of public schools, and asks if he is a product of public schools, why should he not use the instrumentality of office to rehabilitate the battered and the destroyed public school system. He says that during his time in school, there was everything in the public school because the public school was competitive. He will say the very best attended the public schools while those that could not cope attended private schools. Today, the reverse is the case. He is also very passionate about reviving the health sector. He says he cannot imagine that many people in the rural areas cannot have access to decent health facilities. While people in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Kaduna, and other cities are living comfortably, they don’t bother to care about the rural dwellers who produce the foods they eat in the cities. When he realised that accidents have become incessant on our roads, he introduced the ambulance system. This is really saving lives – it takes care of the sick and the pregnant women.

And it is in all the senatorial districts, each senatorial distric having nine. Just call them on their number and the ambulance is already there. I know we have ambulances in our hospitals in Nigeria, but what we have here runs twenty-four hours all over the state. Apart from Lagos, where do you have that kind of thing? Since he inaugurated the ambulance system, the rate of mortality through accidents has reduced drastically – I have the hospital statistics. When some journalists had an accident recently the ambulance team gave them first aid and took them to the hospital promptly. We could have lost more than five of them but for the intervention of this great man. Those who are alive today among the victims will give gratitude to God and credit to the government of Aregbesola. Many members of the public who have benefitted from this initiative cannot also forget Rauf Aregbesola. In the past, when an acident happened, many of the victims died in the pool of their blood unattended to.

You can also see that the people are happy with his agricultural revolution. His initiative in the area of agriculture can also be linked with Fidel Castro’s ideology in the area of agriculture in Cuba. Agriculture runs in Cuba. I know what I am talking about, in the forseeable future, this state will be the largest food basket in the whole of the former Western region. With the foundation, the output we are recording in all our farms in the areas of fishery, livestock, etc has increased. Very soon, cocoa will be processed here. There will be no need for any cocoa farmer to travel elsewhere because all the cocoa products will be processed in Ede.

The thinking of Aregbesola is to make Osun the hub of agricultural production for the whole of the West, that we can do it since the climate favours us. He has also made a landmark in the area of social security. He realised that the insecurity problems Nigeria is going through today is as a result of lack of social security. What he is doing in the area of O’Yes is a way of giving social security to Nigerians. With that, the rate of criminality in Osun has reduced drastically – anyone can find out from the police. He has engaged the youth of this generation in socio-economic development of this state. In the area of road construction in the thirty local government areas, he has touched so many areas. Look at the working tools he has given to the police. How will the people not be happy? Where there is security, investors will come. Awolowo immortalised himself in the hearts of the people through his policies. Aregbesola is doing the same thing here. That is why he walks freely on all the streets and towns in Osun. How many state governors can walk freely on the streets of their states?

Going by what you have seen in the course of campaigns, are you confident that the people so appreciate his works that they will vote for him again?

Yes, I am sure of that. Every Friday and Sunday, he makes beggars happy by identifying with them and giving them money. How many governors do that? How many times has President Goodluck Jonathan done that? How many times has the president visited an orphanage? How many times has the president dined and wined with destitutes or the downtrodden masses? How many times has the president invited the poor masses to the government house to share the dinning table with him? Aregbesola has done that on many occassions where people with special needs were invited to government house, organising dinner for them and giving them sense of belonging that they are part of us. His style of governance gives the impression that he does not fancy vanity or luxury at all.

Beyond what you ascribed to the governor, to what extent are you also counting on members of your organization in all the 30 local government areas in the state to win next Saturday poll?

Anytime we hold meetings or rallies, I am always amazed at the way they work. They are very committed. Recently, I tested them to know whether their loyalty and devotion is real or not. I asked each chapter to produce within 24 hours at least five hundred members of our organisation that have voter’s card (he opens his laptop to show the figures). Later, I extended it to 72 hours.

Before 72 hours, they produced more than that. I also did my own – I produced my entire family’s voter’s cards, my mother’s voter’s card, my wife’s voter’s card, my son’s voter’s card. I asked every member of De Raufs in all the 3011 polling units in Osun to do same. They produced all this in less than 72 hours. I was shocked. They gave me more than the figure requested for. To the glory of God, in each polling unit, we can conveniently tell you that we have over 150 members today that have voter’s cards. And we have their records stored permanently in our archive.

That is just our own organisation. Look at other countless organisations that also believe in the ideology of Aregbesola – look at the Oranmiyan, Aregbesola Victory Group, Vanguards, etc who also have their members too. Now let us talk about his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). All these are bloc votes. I can tell you authoritatively that Aregbesola cannot get less than 70 per cent of the votes. Anything less than 70 per cent is fraud. He will get 70 per cent from this exercise while other political parties will share the remaining 30 per cent. I can boldly tell you that the candidate of the Labour Party will have more votes than the PDP’s.

In other words, you are not afraid that violence or militarisation of the poll may suddenly change the game?

That is why I disagree with people who want to take over the state by force. I want to say that doing that will not help democracy in Nigeria. I therefore want to use this medium to advise and warn President Jonathan not to be deceived by the aggressive and over-ambitious politicians; otherwise they will throw Osun into chaos. If they come to Osun and rig election, the people of Osun will react. I know they will roll out their armoured tanks, but they should be ready to kill thousands. Rigging election here will bring sudden death to this democracy. I have been into detention 10 times because of the struggle for democracy.

And if democracy collapses on the head of Jonathan, posterity will never forgive him because anarchy is looming. Why? If you rig election in Osun, there will be crisis. This will trigger more crises elsewhere. It will raise the consciousness of people of Ekiti that have been robbed and kept quiet. Crisis will engulf that state and they may start killing people. In Adamawa where the governor was forcefully removed, it will raise the consciousnes of the people there and they may start challenging the impunity. Similar things may happen in Oyo and Ogun, where Governor Amosun is now feeling that he is unsafe. Same thing in Edo and Imo states. And when the crises engulf the whole nation, it will crumble democracy.

That is why I want Jonathan to look and think critically by not undemining the electoral sovereignty of Osun because it can bring quick death to our democracy. I know politicians don’t think about the welfare and security of the country; they only care for their pocket. That is why I am talking about the implications of rigging Osun election. If they do, what I said will happen. They should also know that nobody has the monopoly of violence; it will consume Mr. President and destroy everything because crisis knows no bounds. I want to appeal to him passionately that taking over Osun should be between life and death. It is a do-or-die affair. But he cannot toy with the life of the people and expect them to fold their arms. The people of Osun know what they have passed through in the last four years; they can sleep with their eyes closed because the state is very peaceful. Anyone who wants to return hooliganism to Osun should be expecting anarchy. His party is telling us that Jonathan wants to revenge for not voting for him in 2011, it will consume him if he dares it. It will consume every consumable democratic structure in Nigeria, and posterity will not forgive any of them.

Osun: OEDP celebrates Aregbesola in film

IN line with its pristine vision, the Office for Economic Development and Partnerships (OEDP) will today delight Nigerians, as it holds an exclusive premiere and screening of a new documentary film titled: “Nigeria: An Alternative Perspective, Inspirations and lessons from Osun” at  Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.

The insightful documentary produced by Paris-based production outfit, YK Projects, and directed by Kunle Afolayan, a notable actor, filmmaker and director, will be premiered with a private viewing for a select group of key societal and industry stakeholders.

The project director, Dr. Charles Akinola, revealed that the documentary “chronicles the new thinking on development as exemplified by the State of Osun under the leadership of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. It focuses on five key areas of education, infrastructure, empowerment, agriculture/food security and governance.”

Viewers, according to him, will be thrilled with innovative programmes in those areas of the economy, which are already being understudied by local and international development institutions.

The documentary features interviews and commentaries from notable national and international Nigerian leaders of thoughts. “The Osun example notably is a worthy alternative to developing Nigeria and should be sustained and, above all, scaled across the nation. This was part of the drive for the OEDP to have conceived this initiative and particularly to have an independent, non-political appraisal of the goings in Osun, which undoubtedly have been adjudged by all as exemplary,” he said.

  • Why Aregbesola will win

    Why Aregbesola will win

Friday, May 24, 2013. 35 governors gathered to vote for the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF). With the initial postponement and intrigues that surrounded it, it was going to be a night of long knives. With the Presidency interested in the outcome and with Governor Rotimi Amaechi determined to give it another shot in spite of his open confrontation with the President, it was going to take more than ordinary determination to navigate the treacherous waters. It would take grit, uncommon courage and the ability to outfox the henchmen of the Presidency.

At the entrance of the venue of the election, all the governors were mandated to submit all their mobile phones. But one man particularly suspected there was going to be foul play so he sneaked in a pen camera. He recorded the vote counting surreptitiously until when Governor Godswill Akpabio noticed they were being secretly recorded. When controversy sprang up on the actual winner of the contest, he released the video to the public. The man who exposed the lie was Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Governor of Osun State.

Controversy is his middle name. For nine months, he operated solely without commissioners. He renamed Osun State and gave it a new nomenclature called ‘State of Osun.’ He fashioned a new educational policy and called it reclassification of schools. In one fell swoop, schools were merged and bedlam ensued.

In spite of the unending controversies and despite the appointment of an Osun State indigene Jelili Adesiyan as the Minister of Police Affairs, it is my carefully considered opinion that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola will win the August 9 election. Here’s why I think he will trump Otunba Iyiola Omisore, the PDP’s candidate.

Omisore’s poor candidature. Iyiola Omisore is not Peter Ayodele Fayose. He lacks the charisma of Fayose. He is not a Jimi Agbaje. He lacks the character of Agbaje. He doesn’t have the mass appeal even though he has the notoriety. While you cannot deny that he has a semblance of structure having been the Deputy Governor of the state and also a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, his major Achilles heel is that he has been successfully tainted by the accusation of involvement in Bola Ige’s murder. This is one accusation that has refused to go in spite of his protestations. In addition, his campaign is a poor caricature of Ayodele Fayose’s. Whoever is his campaign director needs to get fired as he has run one of the most bizarre and lacklustre campaigns ever. His efforts to align with the masses fell flat – his handling of two roasted corn cobs in both hands, his ride to a campaign venue on an ‘okada’ and his absurd combination of two different ‘Ankara’ materials as cloth are images that have defined his campaign. He has not successfully exploited Rauf Aregbesola’s obvious weaknesses.

When it was time to debate Ogbeni, he didn’t show up. That was an opportunity to redeem himself but he failed to utilise it. Ayo Fayose challenged Kayode Fayemi for a walk on the streets of Ado-Ekiti but Iyiola Omisore claimed he didn’t come for the debate because he didn’t want Ogbeni to beat him up. Is it any wonder that the President has not attended any rally in Osun State even up till now? The President must have read the handwriting on the wall and there was no point dissipating energy in the wrong direction. PDP lost it when the ticket was given to Omisore because he is irredeemable. If he’s banking on federal might, he got it wrong this time because you can only rig successfully where you are popular. In fact, Ogbeni will be gifted this election not because of his superlative performance but primarily because of Omisore’s poor candidature.

Disunity in the PDP house. No situation exacerbated the looming disunity in Osun State PDP than the statement credited to the Minister for Police Affairs that he will beat Senator Isiaka Adeleke when he leaves office. Adeleke claimed he was assaulted during a party meeting and he subsequently defected to APC. Fatai Akinbade, a former Chairman of the State PDP and a man who served three different times as commissioner under three different military regimes also defected to the Labour Party. Former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has not come out openly in support of Iyiola Omisore despite belonging to the same party. In fact, he was even courted by the top echelon of the APC. As a former National Secretary of the party and also a former governor of the state, his body language speaks volumes. Oyinlola is a prince of Okuku, the capital of Odo-Otin Local Government Area, one of the 30 local government areas in Osun State. It is instructive to note that Odo-Otin is one of the three local government council areas with the highest number of 15 wards in the state after Osogbo and Iwo.

Ogbeni Aregbesola’s above-average performance. In spite of his controversies, only a blind man will ignore Ogbeni’s performance. He has built mega schools, many of them super infrastructures with commendable appurtenances. He has constructed over 20 inter-city roads and more than 15 intra-city roads. This is apart from some very ambitious dualisation projects embarked upon. The free festive inter-city train ride from Lagos to Osogbo has become a constant feature of his administration. I was informed that he has built 74 primary health centres all over Osun State. He has increased IGR in Osun from N300m to N1.6b and has not been known to borrow from any financial institution, save for the Islamic bond he took. His O’Meals project is laudable. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying the fact that he has improved the face of governance in the state.

Ogbeni’s massive campaign network. Ogbeni has embarked on a blitzkrieg of a campaign. Maybe due to the lessons learnt from Ekiti’s recent election, he has left no stone untouched. This is the first time I’m seeing an incumbent campaign as if he’s the under-dog. He has run a very good campaign so far- both terrestrially and on social media. Going by his student unionism antecedents, one is not too surprised that he has at least two former student leaders in his cabinet and they are both active in running his campaign. Most of the controversial issues raised have been either effectively addressed or well mitigated by this team. When the issue of religious fundamentalism came up, they released the video of Bishop David Oyedepo’s visit. Ogbeni has been photographed genuflecting to Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye. He attended a major night vigil organised by a white garment church. He has been dancing ‘skelewu’ at all rallies to show he can connect with the populace. He has run his campaign without Bola Tinubu being visible, so the issue of the overbearing influence of the APC leader has been largely well managed. Ogbeni runs the best propaganda machinery in the South-West and the effect can be seen in how he has successfully diverted attention from his controversies while making Omisore seem to be the controversial one.

I therefore have no doubt that he is going to win the governorship election of August 9 in a landslide.

  • Aregbesola ‘ll win by 73%, says opinion poll

Aregbesola ‘ll win by 73%, says opinion poll

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will win the August 9 governorship election by 73 per cent, if there is a free and fair election, TSN-RSM, a survey group, has predicted.

The research firm, which is a member of Gallup International, also reported that Aregbesola’s main challenger and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore, is behind by 54 points.

However, the survey, which was conducted in Osun State between June and last month, also said that public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dropped by 10 points.

The survey stated: “The APC continues to dominate the political landscape in Osun State, judging by its performance on key indicators evaluated. It scored highest and increased in rating on first mention, sympathy and voting intention.”

It added: “The governor, Rauf Aregbesola, is the candidate of choice by Osun voters with 73 per cent lead over other candidates. This is a clear indication that the choice of Osun voters in the next governorship race is Governor Rauf Aregbesola.”

Omisore polled 19 per cent, representing a two percent decline from the earlier survey.

“The governor remains the main voting choice. Voting choice for Senator Omisore declined by two per cent and seemed not to pose a threat to the incumbent’s chances of re-election as he remains firmly ahead of the race.”

“Not only is the APC the most preferred party in Osun State, it has largely retained this goodwill from way back in the past. It was the party that most people claimed to have voted for in the last election and it is still the party with the highest chances of winning the election again. More importantly, the gap by which it outperforms the opposition, continues to widen and more convincing in the survey.”

In the report, the APC is rated very high as its top-of-mind and awareness increased from 75 per cent to 78 per cent over the two polls, followed by the PDP with 18 per cent, a drop of three per cent from 21 per cent in the first study.

The Labour Party (LP) came third, with a negligible one per cent. Furthermore, the “electorate choice” for the APC is now 70 per cent, boosted by one per cent increment. Nineteen percent indicated that they would vote for the PDP, which represented another three per cent drop. The electorate’s choice for the LP remained one percent.

The report stressed:  “While Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is more known than his party, Senator Iyiola Omisore is less known than his party. The top-of-mind awareness of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola increased to 85 per cent (from 79 per cent), affinity increased from 72 per cent to 74 per cent and chances of being re-elected increased from 71 per cent to 73 per cent.”

“Conversely, it is a tale of decline for the man in the second place, Senator Omisore. For the top-of-mind awareness, the PDP candidate dropped to 13 per cent from 19 per cent, affinity fell to 19 per cent from 21per cent and chances of being elected declined to 19 per cent from 21 per cent.”

The analysis showed that while the affinity of the Osun electorate towards the APC increased by four per cent, the PDP failed to maintain its connection to the people. The positive perception of the APC by Osun voters stood at 83 per cent while on 17 per cent viewed the APC as unfavourable.

According to the polls, 98 per cent of respondents said they would participate in the August 9 election. This suggests that the people are prepared for any eventuality in election.

The survey also showed the strength of the candidates and their parties in the local government areas across the state.

“The repeat of the APC high chance to win in all the local government areas (LGAs) seem to play out again in the next election. The APC is poised to repeat this feat, except in Ife Central and Ife East. The PDP seemed well-positioned to win these two LGAs. The LP’s weakness is imminent across all the LGAs.

“The incumbent’s chances of being reelected remain same across the LGAs, except in Ife Central and Ife East. The incumbent’s chances of re-election remain high and leads his closest rival by a good margin of 54 per cent – an increment of four per cent over the last survey.”

But the voters’ confidence in the INEC dropped to from 57 per cent to 67 per cent.

Statistically, the research firm stated that that “the margin of error for the survey is “plus or minus five per cent, with 95 per cent level of confidence.”

  • ‘Aregbesola deserves re-election’

    ‘Aregbesola deserves re-election’

A group, Eko United Association, has said Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola deserves re-election.

It said the electorate should vote for him to enable him continue his good programmes.

The association’s chairman, Alhaji Taofeek Ariyo Osuolale, who spoke at a special prayer organised for Aregbesola, said they decided to pray because the governor deserved re-election.

He said the prayer was organised to coincide with the end of the Ramadan fast, adding that having fasted, they believed God would answer their prayers.

The Missioner of As-Abul Nuhu Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Alhaji Kamaldeen Salmon Alawiye, hailed the group for praying for Aregbesola.

A member, Sadiq Odusoga, thanked his colleagues for defying the rain to pray for Aregbesola’s re-election.

  • Between Aregbesola and Omisore

One of the several intrusive short messages that invade my phone regularly says that potential employers spend only six seconds to scan through the curriculum vitae (CV) of applicants. The message therefore asks an applicant to make the most of the opportunity by learning how to write an arresting CV. With respect to voters, what is it that propels a voter to make his choice? Does a voter, as an employer (well that is what it should be in a functional democracy) spend just six seconds to look at the CV of a candidate for election, who actually is not different from an applicant?

So on August 9, 2014, how much effort will the people of the State of Osun, expend before they make the critical choice of who governs their state for the next four years? Will they like impatient potential employers inattentively gloss over the CV of the candidates, or will they take time to critically examine the antecedents of the candidates and with the information garnered, make that critical choice. Luckily for the Osun electorate, the two major candidates, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the current Governor of the state and the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC); and Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have curriculum vitae, out in the public domain.

For Ogbeni, as the Governor is popularly called, his record of performance is there for the public to see. A critical appraisal shows that he has delivered on his current mandate in terms of infrastructure, like rural roads, urban renewal projects, housing, rural electrification, schools rehabilitation and a host of others. He has also done well in developing the human capital, whether by way of massive youth employment programmes, that has been copied by many states, the innovative ‘tablet of knowledge’ in schools, which has also been copied by many states, and his efficient reform in the judiciary and the state civil service. One intriguing aspect of Aregbesola is his grassroots politics.

As a Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has no airs about the grand illusion of high political office, even as he doggedly contends that he and his state, as a Governor and a federating unit respectively, deserves respect from the federal authorities. On this score, the Governor of the State of Osun has my full support, and I suppose that of the majority of the people of Osun. As I have consistently argued on this page, Nigeria as it is currently configured can only make little progress, and so I support the courageous advocacy of officials like Governor Aregbesola, in asserting his official rights and that of his state in the federation. No doubt, that is the only way to develop a productive federation, rather that a consumptive and dependent federation, with states in the country, not any different than a hapless appendage of the Federal Government.

Of course Ogbeni Aregbesola has had his disagreements with the Federal Government because of his fierce opposition to the obtrusive interference of the Federal Government in the affairs of the states. As I argued in my only intervention on the affairs of sate on this page, sometime in the past, Aregbesola acted within his capacity as governor of a state, when he decided to refer to his beloved state, as the ‘State of Osun’, created totems for his state, and celebrated them.  Despite the harassment and innuendoes from the Federal Government, those acts have nothing to do with interfering in the exercise of the executive powers of the President or any other federal authority acting within the confines of the provisions of the 1999 constitution, as amended.

Notably, Governor Aregbesola’s main albatross is that he loves his religion, Islam. That is no crime. But his opponents like to insinuate that his passion is responsible for the realignment of schools in the state, which generated a lot of controversy. Interestingly, the preponderance of opinion by those who should know; is that, that argument is a bogey, to tar the governor as a dangerous extremist. For me, the Yoruba represent a good model for religious tolerance, with several notable Muslim personalities marrying Christian spouses, and vice versa. So, it was surprising those insidious commentaries where trying to cast Aregbesola as a bigot, despite that he is an associate of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Fashola who are quintessence models of religious tolerance.

On the other hand Omisore is a Senator, representing one of the senatorial zones, in the state of Osun, in the National Assembly. He is not reputed as a radical law maker; instead being a member of the ruling party at the center, the PDP, he tag along, to ensure the maintenance of the status quo. In a free and fair election, a PDP platform would have been a death knell for any person in the politics of south-western Nigeria. The reason being that majority of the people of the region has always fought for an authentic federal system of government, which no government at the center since independence has shown any predilection towards. So, it is strange that Senator Omisore, on the platform of a national status-quo driven PDP government is considered a strong contender, in a state regarded as the fountain of the Yoruba race.

Even more confounding, is the albatross on the neck of Senator Omisore. I am talking of the well known fact that he was detained and tried for the murder of late Bola Ige, a former Governor of the old Oyo state, which included the present Osun state. Even though he was acquitted by the court; the fact that there was enough evidence to charge him, ordinarily was enough tar; where the upcoming gubernatorial elections to be free and fair, devoid of the prevalent unconstitutional militarisation by the Federal Government.

  • My priority, by Aregbesola

    My priority, by Aregbesola

Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the transformation of Osun State remains his priority.

He spoke when rendering accounts of his stewardship at  a programme organised by the All Christian Leaders and Ministers Forum (ACLMF) at the auditorium of the Olorunda Local Government Secretariat, Osogbo.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, said his administration was determined to transform the state into a mega city.

He said since assumption of office, he had brought transformation to governance and gave democracy a meaning.

The ACLMF National President, Dr. Sam Ogedengbe, said it was the practice of the group to give candidates the opportunity to tell the electorate about their manifestos and to allow them render their accounts of stewardship.

He urged the electorate to vote for a credible candidate on August 9.

The State Chairman of the ACLMF, Apostle Samson Opadotun, praised Aregbesola for rendering his stewardship to the Christian group despite being a Muslim.

The event was attended by the ACLMF chairmen in the 30 local governments and Christian leaders.

  • They will be singing for Rauf

Snooper has just received a zodiac message on the morning of Aregbesola’s re-election. It is not going to be a close call. There is a vision of school pupils of all hue dancing and singing for Rauf. In the muffled din of celebration, the lyrics are unforgettable. It goes like this.

Our egg is better than your corn

The yolk will save us from your yoke

The albumen will become a timeless album of the mind

Which will remind us of the wasted years of our fathers

The growing infrastructure of our brains

Will forever mock the shrinking structure of your stomach.

  • ‘Why Aregbesola’s agric programme is a success’

‘Why Aregbesola’s agric programme is a success’

Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Office of the Osun State Governor has emphasised that the StateRural Enterprise and Agricultural Programme (OREAP) remains “one of the successful, laudable development and wealth creation programmes of the Rauf Aregbesola administration.”

The Bureau spoke yesterday while reacting to what it called “another in the litany of the Iyiola Omisore lies.”

Omisore had claimed in some media reports that the state’s agricultural programme tagged OREAP was a fraud, alleging there is nothing to show for it in almost four years.

Describing Omisore’s position as ill-informed and an indication of the crass ignorance of the working of development programmes in government, the Bureau said Aregbesola had not come to power before recognising the need for massive food production to grow an economy such as that of Osun; ignite industrialisation and create jobs.

The statement by its Director, Semiu Okanlawon, said the allegation gave away PDP and its candidate as a lazy bunch of people who lack the capacity for simple facts-finding before going to the press.

“Farmers are among the happiest beneficiaries of the current administration in Osun. This is because of the prime place Aregbesola accords food production. The agricultural sector has been very strategic to the overall development of Osun. At least, the state’s massive food production programme is central to the realization of three of the six integral action plans of the administration. Only the nit-witted would conclude that agriculture has not played a lead role in banishing poverty, banishing hunger and creation of jobs and wealth,” the Bureau stated

Against the lies being bandied by the PDP that farm estates and settlements were supposed to be upgraded, he said land validation exercise and perimeter survey were done with latest technology in nine farm settlements which he noted is the first in the history of farm settlements in South-West of the country.

He added that over 3,070.3 hectares of land was cleared and 6,209 hectares tractorised across the state.

Okanlawon also noted that 20,000 Hectares of farmland were validated in the nine farm settlements, more 4,211 Hectares was discovered and reallocated to small holders.

According to him, “This is a programme that was well thought out to empower farmers. The Government procured 5000 metric tons of fertilizers sold to farmers at 50% subsidy over the last 2 years; 1,830 rural farmers in 61 local communities received farm inputs from the State in collaboration with UNICEF.”
