Nigeria will end terrorism, banditry with establishment of Army Aviation – Gen Ezugwu

Nigeria will win the war against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry if the planned establishment of Army Aviation succeeds and the night fighting capabilities of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps are improved.

Former commander infantry corps, Major General Victor Ezugwu (rtd), stated this in his farewell address, during the Pulling Out Parade ceremony organised by the Infantry Corps Centre, Jaji in honour of himself and 28 other Infantry Generals recently retired from the Nigerian Army.

Major General Ezugwu (rtd), who served as the Special Guest of Honour and Reviewing Officer at the colourful Pulling Out Parade said, Colombia fought international security challenges similar to Nigeria’s for 52 years, but the country defeated its adversaries with the establishment of aviation corps for its Army.

General Ezugwu said: “We note with great hype the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja to operationalize the Nigerian Army Aviation Corps. This will not only deal a fatal blow to the adversary Centre of Gravity but also change the tempo of the game in our favour.

“I was privileged to go to Colombia with Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai when he was the Chief of Army Staff in 2016. They told us that, they fought their crisis like we have had in Nigeria for 52 years, but the moment they established their Army Aviation, they went on their enemies and gave close support to the infantry and other armed forces and they were able to defeat their enemies.

“So, I am praying and wishing the Nigerian Army well, that this Army Aviation that the Chief of Army Staff is driving, is going to get the support of Mr President so that we can finish this business once and for all so that Nigerians can rest.

“As my colleagues and I bid you all farewell today, we wish to admonish the Infantry Corps to review some of its tactical and operational strategies in the areas of night fighting capabilities, frontline intelligence gathering on enemy activities, basic field crafts training in the areas of aggressive fighting patrols to dominate at least 5 km radius of their locations, Ambushes, listening and observation posts as well as all levels of battle drills.

“The enemies often attack us in the night, maybe because they think we are weak in the night. The moment we can enforce that night training and we perfect all the actions we need to do when the enemies are on us, I am sure we are going to defeat all our enemies flat.

“Furthermore, we advocate the employment of modern technology and Information and Computer Technology enablers as well as deliberate efforts to develop leadership skills of junior commanders.

“Considering the sound pedigree of the current Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Lagbaja whom I consider a very capable hand and a General of high professional standing and character, the Nigerian Army and Infantry Corps will not let the Armed Forces of Nigeria down.

“With these and other suggestions, I am sure Nigeria is going to witness absolute peace in a few moments to come.

“As we finally bid farewell to the Queen of the Battle Family, I want to encourage all our successors to not only sustain our modest strategic, operational and tactical achievements but also try to surpass them by yielding to nothing whatsoever.

“It has become highly imperative to do so as our Country has never been faced with grave security challenges as it is being witnessed today. The frontline is expanding and the Nigerian Army is becoming increasingly committed with the eyes of the nation and the world on it.

“Our Infantry Corps must therefore not relent or rest on her oars as the entire Nigerian Army depends largely on the Infantry Corps to achieve its Core Mandate and mission.

“Let me also admonish the Infantry that as the threats to Nigeria’s sovereignty is becoming asymmetric in time and space, you must be proactively way ahead of our adversaries in all aspects of the unfolding combat scenarios.

“I am strongly convinced that we are leaving behind tested and trusted officers and soldiers as capable successors who will leverage the quality of training, guidance, and mentorship we have given them over the years to defeat our adversaries.

“Be rest assured that my colleagues and I will be glad and willing to avail the Infantry Corps of our time, energy, and resources until our last breath on earth,” he said.

On behalf of himself and the 28 other Infantry Generals, including 19 Major Generals and 10 Brigadier Generals, Ezugwu announced a donation of N1million and 200 books and an encyclopedia to the Infantry Corps Centre to promote training, reading culture, mentorship, and capacity development of Infantry officers and soldiers.

The Infantry Corps Commander and the Host of the pulling-out ceremony, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, wished the retired generals well and said the corps will continue to tap from their wealth of experience and expertise.

Army kills IPOB bomb expert in Imo

Troops of the Army, in conjunction with sister services and other security agencies, have neutralised an Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) expert of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Orsu – Ihitteukwa, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The troops, comprising the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Nigerian Police, Department of State Services and the Nigerian Securities and Civil Defence Corps, were on a clearance operation around Udaah, Identa Ihitteukwa and Awo Idemili in Orsu LGA of Imo State.

They made contact with the dissidents, who opened fire, lobbed hand-held IEDs and launched locally made rockets (Ogbunigwe) at the advancing troops.

According to army spokesman, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, while troops advanced, several IEDs were detonated by the terrorists, who fled in disarray. One of the dissidents was neutralised while connecting the explosive to its power source.

Items recovered include locally made rocket launchers, defused IEDs, pipes, wires and other materials used in the production of explosives.

The troops also covered several ditches used as obstacles on the roads linking the communities by the ESN elements.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to conduct its operations to deter the irredentist from freedom of action,” he assured.

    • Three terrorist commanders, 715 others killed  in three months

The Army has taken a significant step to prevent the killing of its troops through ambush by terrorists and bandits.

In the last one month, 24 Army officers and men were killed through ambush in Delta and Niger states, while on peace missions.

Yesterday, Chief of Army Staff (COAS)  Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, hinted of the plan to take delivery of Mine-resistant Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicles in the next few weeks.

This is to ensure safety of its personnel in the battle against terrorists and economic saboteurs.

The Amry is engaged in different operation in virtually all the 36 states.

Gen. Lagbaja added that the Aviation unit of the Army will soon take off.

MRAP vehicles are a family of automobiles designed to provide increased crew protection against operational threats, such as Improvised Explosive Devices(IEDs), mines, and small arms.

There are different categories of MRAPs with the most popular being Cougar 6×6, an  advanced ballistic and blast-protected type that can seat 10 fully-equipped soldiers.

Army Aviation is generally separate from the Air Force. It usually has a full complement of its own helicopters and light support fixed-wing aircraft.

Gen. Lagbaja did not give the number of the MRAPs being expected when he spoke to troops of the 23 Brigade at the  Gibson Jalo Cantonment, Yola in Adamawa State. However, he revealed that some of the assets for the NA Aviation would be on the ground before July.

He told the troops that the awaited special purpose vehicles, the NA Aviation, and other projects,  were evidence of progress being made by the Army due to  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support.

He said:  “The government, in its effort to reposition the Army, is doing a lot. In the next few weeks, we are expecting mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles to enhance the conduct of our operations nationwide.

“With the support we are getting from Mr President, putting everything together, in the foreseeable future, I see the security situation across Nigeria improving tremendously.”

The Army chief also told the troops that he chose to visit them for a first-hand experience on their challenges and how they conduct their operations.

He added: “I want to encourage you to be unrelenting in the discharge of your duties. Is it anti-banditry,   counter-terrorism,  normal internal security operations? Whatever task you are given, you should take it as a duty that must be discharged creditably. The Army will address the challenges that confront you and your families.”

    * Three terrorist commanders, 715 others killed  in three months

The Defence Headquarters yesterday said that air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF)  killed three terrorist commanders – Ali Dawud, Bakura Fallujah, and Mallam Ari – in  Kolleram, Borno State.

It added that several terrorist leaders and their combatants were neutralised during air strikes on their enclaves in Katsina, Niger, Sokoto, and Zamfara states in the past three months.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, who made these known to reporters in Abuja, also said that  146 criminals were arrested and 465 kidnap victims rescued.

Buba added that troops seized 2,563,335 litres of stolen crude oil, 254,620 litres of illegally refined diesel, 1,050 litres of kerosene, and 8,000 litres of petrol in the last three months.

He said: “Furthermore, troops recovered 937 assorted weapons, 23,034 assorted ammunitions and denied the oil thieves of  N2. 6 billion.

“Troops are conscious and are not losing sight of the importance of momentum when it comes to fighting such vicious adversaries.

“The current situation depicts a strain of tactical achievements in degrading the terrorists by dismantling most of the terrorist infrastructure in the Northeast, killing the majority of the combatants, and killing a lot of their senior combatants.

“It must be noted that many of the terrorist commanders as well have been taken off the battlefield.

“Ongoing operations have suppressed the terrorists and prevented them from achieving their strategic objectives.

“Troops have equally denied the terrorist freedom of action and disrupted their activities, thereby reducing their effectiveness. Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to rid the environment of terrorists and the military is not resting on its oars.”

Nigerian Army to receive ambush-protected vehicles, set for aviation takeoff

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has announced that the Nigerian Army will receive mine-resistant and ambush-protected vehicles in a few weeks.

Lagbaja, who said this in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, also announced that Nigerian Army Aviation will soon take off.

While addressing troops of the 23 Brigade in Gibson Jalo Cantonment, Yola, the Army chief emphasised that the acquisition of these special purpose vehicles and aviation development projects is evidence of the progress made by the Army.

He also acknowledged the huge support from President Bola Tinubu.

He said: “The current government, in its effort to reposition the Army is doing a lot. In the next few weeks, we are expecting mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles to enhance the conduct of our operations nationwide.”

On the Nigerian Army Aviation being worked on, the COAS said the Army is seeing now how it can quickly get some of the assets on the ground before July this year.

He said much has recently been achieved in curbing insecurity in the South-South, South-East, and North Central, and that challenges still noticed in North West and part of North East are being aggressively addressed.

  • It’s Army’s duty to wage war on poverty through Òguń Complex

It’s Army’s duty to wage war on poverty through Òguń Complex

The Army is the most disciplined and technically skilled institution that can carry out the task of laying our railway foundations for industrialization, which it will then protect with weapons that it makes. Instead of activists yearning for Shango’s Justice to throw out corrupt politicians, they should prompt the army to build the railways and military industrial complex, regardless of the party, person in power. Strictly economic, nothing political. Prince Justice Faloye writes

Since returning to democracy, we have been in search of the right political systems and economic ideologies to bring prosperity to our people, but the political class have shown little or no solutions of how to attain the Prosperity of the Industrialized world. Some disgruntled politicians and citizens often wish that the army takes over after shambolic elections or economic mismanagement. Army coups swept out post independence democracies across Africa, and ruled for decades until it became obvious that they had no business with politics and governance.

Recall back in history, George Washington, the largest slave owner became a soldier to protect the local slave economy from British colonialists, while Alexander Hamilton, a soldier, is the acknowledged father of USA big business. Following the mid 1800s railroad boom, the iron merchants turned to building skyscrapers with the surplus iron, before finally using it to build armoured plates for the Navy and armoured vehicles. The First World War caused widespread public discontent that the USA had been dragged into what was essentially a European Colonial War, and led to the 1934 Senator Gerald Nye Senate Committee Hearings that showed that the Navy and Army were the main salesmen of arms makers that dragged the USA into war to sell their munitions.

In what is known as Peace Dividends, the production plants of war goods incorporated producing consumer goods, consumer cars alongside armoured vehicles, radios with radar among other things which brought a long period of prosperity and employment by what was aptly named the Industrial Military complex. Not only in USA has the military been at the economic foundation of nations, as the British Empire was built on the efficiency of turning slave ships into battleships. This was known as Mercantilism whereby nations used their army to back their businessmen to takeover natural and human resources.

In actual fact, the prosperity of Eurasian empires dating back to Babylon was based on war economics. Starting with brutal war with no ideology during the Age of Aries/Ogun 2000BC to 1AD, it evolved in the Age of Pisces/Olokun to using religious dogma to disguise the military grabbing of resources, which eventually led to racist dogma of enslaving Africans to build the Western global economy. At the end of the 350 year slave based economy came colonization that led to the First World War, and the start of the Industrial military complex of turning war goods into consumer goods. It followed by the Second World War when production facilities of fighter jets were adapted for passenger jets and air travel, before the Cold War and its military intelligence became computer technology and the internet, the current economic growth driver.

California, currently the world’s fifth largest economy, was a desert that first attracted people during the short-lived 1848 Gold Rush, whose fortunes were turned around by the airborne military industrial complex. Its clear skies and huge expanse of land was conducive to testing of airplanes and siting of huge factories that employed millions of people. Its Peace Dividend was Hollywood. With the advent of computer technology, the military industrial complex built the Silicon Valley which also worked with Hollywood, it’s Chief marketer. In time, California became the most populous and richest USA state with a GDP of nearly $4 trillion. Texas also became second richest due to the relocation of the military industrial complex facilities there.

The most pronounced use of the army to build an industrial military complex is the Peoples Liberation Army, which built the Chinese railways that stimulated industrialization to liberate their people from poverty. So did South Korea’s General Park Chung Hee. Unfortunately unlike other races, African national armies evolved from slave/colonial armies used to suppress their peoples, and after independence used to protect neocolonial interests. Nigeria’s army originated from the 1863 Lieutenant John Hawley Glover’s Constabulary Force, largely composed of freed Hausa slaves, primarily established to protect the Royal Niger Company and push British colonialism. After the defeat of Benin Empire, it was consolidated in 1900 into the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF), before finally becoming the Nigerian Army in 1956. Despite becoming national armies in Nigeria and Ghana, key soldiers were recruited to protect Western neocolonial interests and sometimes overthrow their national democratic governments.

Due to their misconceptions, the armies never saw themselves as the liberators of their peoples, especially by building their own industrial military complexes that would not only make them truly independent but provide employment and prosperity. Initially the Nigerian army bought its arms from about 13 different nations. However, in 1964 the Nigerian army set up the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria, which became more functional with the 1967 Civil War, assembling other nations weaponry like AK 47. Overtime, it produced more weapons and even started building furniture for the civilian populations. So one wonders that if it knew that it could make profit from consumer sales, why not develop the whole industrial military complex?

Coloniality of knowledge robs us of the philosophical foundations of what the army and industrial complex is about. The loss of indigenous African civilization knowledge robs us from knowing the Ogun philosophy that shows the evolution of Ogun (iron) from the blood (iron) carrying oxygen and other nutrients to make our body function properly, to the use of iron tools for both Agriculture and War. Now, Ogun is to lay iron rails to every locality to stimulate heavy manufacturing of both industrial and defence goods to share the huge overhead costs.

General Obasanjo, probably the most pro-development head of state, went about Operation Feed the Nation, instead of Operation Industrialize the Nation, which should have been done through the army. As a politician, he established Transcorp as a massive investment vehicle to build an industrial complex, but it takes more than investment, and requires political will which civilians can’t summon. The army is Ogun, and only Ogun can beget Ogun. In Yoruba philosophy, the army has no business with Obatala governance and Olokun politics, the army’s job is simply to lay economic foundations, and the first step had been taken with the establishment of DICON. Since defense industries needs consumer industries to share overheads, the army should present plans of how to lay iron rails across Nigeria in record time like the Peoples Liberation Army, and unless we don’t want our army to be self sufficient would politicians obstruct them.

At present, only China can build railways and unfortunately our political class is tied to the West that would sabotage Chinese involvement, therefore left to the politicians we will wait another generation through nepotistic contracts. The Army is the most disciplined and technically skilled institution that can carry out the task of laying our railway foundations for industrialization, which it will then protect from internal and external saboteurs with weapons that it makes. Instead of activists yearning for Shango’s Justice to throw out corrupt politicians with his Ogun axe made by foreigners, they should prompt the army to build the railways and military industrial complex, regardless of the party or person in power. Strictly economic, nothing political.

Our two North-South railways will become a grid by laying three East-West railways – Lagos-Calabar, Ilorin-Yola and Sokoto-Maiduguri in three years. Government and public institutions are not good managers of business, so once the infrastructure are built it must be privatized, and either the army builds the rest to fill up the 9 box grid or the privatized companies and state governments can build the feeder routes to every corner. Railways provide the highest return on investment of USA industries at 50.93%, and could bring close to $100b annually to Nigeria, in addition to the fact that it has the highest income and employment multiplier effects across the economy. For every Naira or person employed in the railway it stimulates N20 and 20 new jobs in agriculture, car manufacturing and other heavy manufacturing, logistics, freighting and other new sectors. Being the largest contraption of Iron and Chemicals, it will multiply tenfold the combined contribution of a mere 1.6% that iron and steel, plastic and rubber, and electrical and electronics currently make to the economy.

Since President Tinubu’s hands are tied by the West from doing business with China, especially on economic liberating infrastructure, the army should leave chasing terrorists and bandits to the politicians that should restructure, decentralize and specialize the police force, and instead focus on building an industrial military complex through Defense Industries Corporation (DICON) with plan for 10,000 kilometers of railways to employ millions and liberate us from poverty.

The villagers said they fled following the withdrawal of military security personnel from the area.

A male among them, Malam Umar Salisu, said: “Before now, there were military personnel attached to our village. Some of them were killed by bandits while some were withdrawn yesterday.
