  • Cleric seeks special pay for military, police

Blind cleric and General Overseer of the Hour of Mercy Prayer Ministry, Orioke Alaseyori, Ibadan, Oyo State, Prophet Moses Kasali, has advised the Federal Government to prepare special salaries for security agents to encourage them to end insecurity in Nigeria.

The cleric said: “Adequate compensations should be given to security men fighting at the warfronts if the Federal Government cannot come up with special salary package for the security formations which Nigerians believe is the best option.”

Kasali warned the Federal Government and Southwest governors against trivialising the alarm raised by Afenifere that the region was under the siege of herdsmen, but they should begin an aggressive mobilisation of all groups, including traditional rulers and security groups like the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and vigilance groups, to be on the alert to ward off imminent breakdown of law and order.

The cleric added: “The highway robbery in the Southeest, particularly along Aramoko-Efon-Iwaraja, Akure-Ado road, Owo-Ikare road, Ilesa-Akure road, Omuo-Abuja road should be stopped. Lagos-Ibadan axis too is not safe, so the Federal Government must do something about it.

“Wherever you go in the Southeest, the fear now has been that people are no longer safe because of suspected herdsmen, who are daily killing the people or abduct them.”

  • 2019 elections: Army absolves itself of wrong doing

The Nigerian Army has absolved itself and personnel of any wrong doing during the 2019 general elections.

It also dismissed allegations of attempted assassination, hijack of Independent National Electoral (INEC) materials as well as imposition of curfew in Rivers State as untrue.

A statement signed by Army spokesman Col. Sagir Musa said the Army would however embark on administrative transfer of some personnel from the 6 Division in Rivers state to douse tension in the area.

It added that the Committee set up by the Army Chief to look into matter met with all stakeholders before arriving at its decisions.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Army has absolved its personnel from allegations of misconduct during Operation SAFE CONDUCT 2019.

“A committee set up by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai to investigate the allegations of unprofessional conduct leveled against the Nigerian Army personnel during the 2019 general elections interacted with stakeholders including governors of Bayelsa and Rivers states, among others.

“The Committee analysed and reviewed the petitions received against Nigerian Army personnel from various stakeholders and found that most of the allegations were untrue, baseless and unsubstantiated claims.

“It was also found out that the allegations of alleged assassination attempt, soldiers unilaterally imposed curfew, abducted and illegally detained INEC staff and diverted INEC materials to Nembe-Basambiri was misrepresented.

“The Committee received submissions from some individuals in the state which revealed that painting Nigerian Army as the aggressor during the elections was a deliberate attempt by some individuals to tarnish the Nigerian Army’s image.

“However, the unprofessional conduct of some personnel was still under investigation and appropriate sanctions will be meted on the offenders according to military law, if found guilty.

“It is also pertinent to inform the public that steps are underway for the gradual administrative redeployment of personnel in 6 Division to douse the observation by some individuals that troops have overstayed especially in Abonnema community.”

  • Army relives how notorious cultist, oil thief was killed in Rivers

The Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 6 Division, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, yesterday gave details of how a notorious cultist and suspected oil bunkering kingpin, Korobe Menele Loveday (aka Mene), was gunned down in Ogoni axis of Rivers State.

His death was said to have occurred after he killed a soldier and two men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The slain security personnel were reportedly guarding Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited’s (SPDC’s) Trans National Pipeline (TNP) at Gio in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

But they were attacked by the criminals, who were prevented from vandalising the 24-inch and 28-inch TNP, thereby putting them out of their illicit business.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) for 6 Division of the Army, Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham, vowed to continue to protect life and property of law-abiding residents in its Area of Responsibility (AOR) in the core Niger Delta: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states, with its headquarters in Port Harcourt.

Sarham is also the Land Component Commander of Operation Delta Safe.

Besides the bloodbath at Gio, Rivers State, last weekend also witnessed three other major criminal activities consisting of armed protesters clashing with security personnel in a shootout at Rumuakparali/Ozuoba Junction, Port Harcourt.

The clash lasted many hours and it involved rival cult groups in the market at Mile Three, Diobu, Port Harcourt.

It led to loss of property with many persons severely injured.

Twice on Saturday, soldiers and operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) chased away criminals who attempted to kidnap some commuters on the Emohua-Degema-Abonnema road in Rivers State; motorists and commuters were forced to a standstill for many hours on the busy road.

Sarham said: “In the early hours of June 16, troops of 29 Battalion of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, in conjunction with personnel of NSCDC guarding SPDC’s TNP at Gio, were attacked by militants and cultists.

“Unfortunately, during the ensuing shootout, one soldier and two personnel of the NSCDC died and their weapons, one AK-47 and two G3 rifles, were carted away by the assailants.

“An immediate reinforcement by troops at the location led to the cordon-and-search of the general area, with a view to finding any criminal believed to be hiding within the communities.

“Reliable intelligence led to the tracking of the prime suspect, a notorious cultist and illegal oil bunkering kingpin, Korobe Menele Loveday (aka Mene), who has been on the wanted list of the security agencies for terrorising communities in the state.

“Consequently, at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, troops cashing in on available information, sighted a white Toyota Hilux vehicle without a number plate, hastily driven with four occupants. Efforts to stop the vehicle by troops at a checkpoint were ignored.

“The gallant troops chased the speeding vehicle and caught up with the suspects at Kira Junction on Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, road.

“Sensing danger, the occupants of the Toyota Hilux vehicle opened fire on the troops in a bid to escape.”

  • Army begins clampdown on kidnappers in Ondo, Ekiti

Men of the 32 Artillery Brigade Owena Barracks, Akure, the Ondo state capital, have said that they are ready to rid the society of kidnappers and bandits in Ondo and neighbouring Ekiti states.

According to the Commander, Brig.Gen, Zakari Logun Abubakar, cparts of the plan to rid and fight kidnapping epidemic was the launching of the “Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad” of the military.

He lamented the rampant cases of kidnapping fast becoming growing business for criminals who use the deep forest to cover up and demand for huge ransom.

Abubakar, who assured the military would fight the scourges of kidnapping with full strengths in the states, declared that the days of the criminal elements are numbered.

He revealed the military has put in place the necessary modalities to ensure kidnapping is either curb or reduced to the barest minimum.

The Brig. Gen however added the military have already instituted an emergency against the fights of kidnapping in both in the states and its boundaries.

His words” To fight this scourge heads long, we have already launched the Anti-kidnaping squad of the military section.

“This squad, which is a special one, would be active, mobile and swift in reacting to cases of kidnapping in the states of our jurisdiction.

“To achieve this vigour, they are to mount strategic location of the roads, check on passengers and vigilant to react to kidnap case.

“We have identified the prone areas where this criminal elements use to perpetrate their evil works. They are bushes in Ondo, Ekiti and Ibilo that is Kogi state.”

Abubakar said the Special Squad (Anti-kidnapping) which is a wing directly under his Command is manned by a trained senior military officer, Captain B.M Danlima.

He noted the army had reached out to stakeholders in the security sector which included – community leaders and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria to further achieve success in the bid to wage war on kidnapping.

  • Rivers CSOs write Chief of Army Staff, hail conduct of personnel during 2019 polls

The Nigerian Army, under the leadership of Lt. Gen. Turkur Yusuf Buratai, has once again received a pat on the back for restoring peace and security in the formerly restive Niger Delta region from satanic forces of militancy and the nation at large.
Some Rivers State-based civil society groups, known as Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) gave the commendation in an open letter to the army chief on Friday.
The CSOs said the open appreciation of Buratai’s leadership became imperative following the successful conduct of the 2019 general elections.
“We least expected that Nigeria would come out of it unhurt as it is today. But with the intervention of the Army under your leadership, we have seen a near-zero electoral violence and killings during and after the last general elections,” part of the letter signed by Comrade Tamuno George (Esq), Convener, Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) read.
The coalition also hailed the army leadership for its display of maturity and professionalism in Rivers State despite the efforts of the state government led by Nyesom Wike to dent its image with unfounded allegations.
    The letter reads in full.
Please accept our belated post- Sallah greetings to you, the General Officers Commanding (GOCs) and other Army personnel of our valued Nigerian Army.
Sir, we hope you will pardon our tardiness hence there is really no belatedness in appreciating a good leader like you and our disciplined, patriotic and hard-working Nigerian troops.
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) domiciled in Rivers State have chosen this propitious time to specially thank you and your troops all over Nigeria. We know, you are spending sleepless nights and also, working sedulously every day for us to have peace and security in our respective domains.
We are elated at the manner you have restored peace and security in the formerly restive Niger Delta region from satanic forces of militancy which tormented all and sundry.  It’s obvious to us that you’re indeed, a very “senior spirit,” on security, whose status is acclaimed globally.
When President Muhammadu Buhari appointed you as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and also, the ombudsman of counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria, we were among those who doubted your competence to repress the threatening and assorted insecurity challenges of our dear country, Nigeria.
But years down the aisle of securing Nigeria, this “Peoples General,” a sobriquet we have specially adopted in the Niger Delta in recognition of your uncommon gift and talents as Mr. Fixer of Nigeria’s security challenges, has made us proud. We had no option than to publicly eulogize your excellent works in securing our country. We again, unanimously, chorus a loud thank you.
We have seen your rewarding and reflective shadows on insecurity in the Northeast, where you sometimes personally lace your boots and hop into the trenches with your troops to battle Boko Haram terrorism.  These CSOs have seen and felt the impact of your struggles with insurgents and have freed our country from their evil chains. In the Northwest, you have battled armed bandits and cattle rustlers to a standstill.
In the Southeast, like you did in the South-South, our people have greater peace and security because you left nothing to chance or happenstance in handling violent secessionist agitations and barefaced armed criminality.
Nigerians in the North Central region are also paying glowing tributes to your leadership dexterity because the Army under your command has quelled crises of various dimensions, which would have ordinarily turned the region into a warzone.
We passionately acknowledge that these confounding feats have been achieved because you are able to reorganize, restructure, re-orientate and reposition the Nigerian Army as a patriotic and responsible arm of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
We endearingly commend President Buhari for extending the needed support and free hand to you for the elevation of the Nigerian Army to grandiose heights in a manner, we least, expected. Again, let us reiterate our thanks to Mr. President for his support to you for the milestones.
And it has convinced us clearly that with you on the saddle as COAS and counter-insurgency leader, no enemy force can defeat Nigeria. None can deprive the citizenry of their liberty to security, peace and unity.
These CSOs are particularly bolstered into this open appreciation of your leadership of the Army because the 2019 general elections were scary for us and other electorates in Rivers state, Niger Delta region and the entire country. We least expected that Nigeria would come out of it unhurt as it is today. But with the intervention of the Army under your leadership, we have seen a near-zero electoral violence and killings during and after the last general elections.
Anywhere our members encountered your troops, we noticed a reformed and disciplined Army, which monitored elections throughout the country without issues raised even by the stiffest opposition parties against their professional conduct whilst on election duty. We saw the Army’s translucent apolitical stand as always sermonized by your leadership.
We noticed for the first time in our history of democratic elections or politics, a transparent outing of soldiers on election duty with just one motive and it started and ended with safeguarding and protecting Nigeria’s democracy to the #NextLevel. We cannot be less proud of you.
Sir, and for the first time, we saw and utilized the Army’s Situation Room under your leadership, which monitored and promptly responded to insecurity alarms from Nigerians in all parts of the country.
This singular initiative saved Nigerians from the planned electoral violence and killings. It averted the plots of electoral heist by demonic forces in Nigeria in 2019. We saw top military officers, especially in Rivers state, who stoutly resisted the numerous temptations of financial inducements by the incumbent Government of Rivers State to compromise the ballots.
We applaud the good conduct of the Nigerian troops particularly in Rivers State, where a vicious Gov. Nyesom Ezenwa Wike who was so desperate for reelection by hook or crook, blackmailed, intimidated and undermined the Army with his executive might.
It has not escaped our memory that Gov. Wike attempted to tarnish the good image and reputation of the Nigerian Army under your leadership by severally approaching the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Jamil Sarham and other officers to compromise the electoral process. When the attempts failed, Gov. Wike went to bizarre extents in blackmailing the institution of the Nigerian Army.
We dare say, without the intervention of soldiers, Gov. Wike would have murdered a sizeable population of the people of Rivers state like he did in 2015 for the sake of political power.
But Gen. Sarham resisted his devilish overtures and he is greatly appreciated for his steadfastness to save lives and protect Nigeria’s democracy in Rivers state. Again, the Army under your command actually saved democracy in Nigeria and our experience in Rivers state amply attest to it.
And Sir, when we heard of the James Moore group, the  “UK Matters Most”, protests in London  to  No. 10 Downing Street, Buckingham Palace and delivered a letter to Queen Elizabeth II as well as the Westminster Parliament, compelling these  top government officials to kick-start action on Gov. Wike’s alleged $1million bribe to the High Commissioner and consulate officials in the  British High Commission in Abuja, it was clear to us, Gov. Wike’s failure to monetarily influence the Army or compromise them compelled him to shift his devilry to foreign officials.
We learnt Gov. Wike’s alleged $1 million bribe to British High Commissioner and Consulate officials in Abuja was meant to have the British election observers cook an incriminating report, which will implicate and question the partiality of the Nigerian Army, especially, the innocent Gen. Sarham and his officers in Rivers state.
But God intervened by exposing the innocence of the Nigerian Army under your command by leaking the secret deals designed against your troops in Rivers state. The “UK Matters Most,” group’s protest in far away London explained it all.
And we shall soon officially write the British Parliament to make public its findings on this allegation against its Consulate officials in Nigeria. It is completely detestable by us for Britain to attempt to bury the outcome of this investigation on such a serious matter as it appears ominous now.
Lastly, we give the greatest gratefulness to you and your commanders for these wonderful works. Nigerians want you to know that your stamp of integrity, discipline and professionalism on the Army have reflected in the modified conduct of Nigerian troops during national assignments. And it has really impressed us and everyone in Nigeria.
We pray that may your days be long and let Almighty God continue to replenish your wisdom and foresight to continue to impact positively on this important institution for us and Nigerians. Thank you, Sir!
  • Terrorism studies: Nigerian Army officer emerges best in UK varsity

Amid the perpetual clamour by the global human rights organisation, Amnesty International, against the efforts of the Nigerian military in combating insurgency and the accusations that the Armed Forces are doing little or nothing to protect the rights of citizens, a Nigerian Army lawyer, Major Ajibade Azeez Atobatele, of the Directorate of Army Legal Services, studying in the United Kingdom, has made the country proud. He distinguished himself by finishing with a distinction in International Human Rights and Terrorism Law, coming top in his class.
The Nigerian Army officer also bagged the Best Dissertation Award of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Lancaster, one of the top 10 universities in the United Kingdom. He was honoured at the convocation ceremony of the University, which was held in the UK. Attesting further to Atobatele’s brilliant academic performance, the Director of Postgraduate Programmes in the Lancaster University Law School, Prof. Sigrun Skogly, confirmed, in a letter written to the Nigerian Embassy in London, that the Army officer performed exceptionally well and achieved the highest mark of his cohort – a mark she described as rarely awarded by the university.
The Law School further confirmed that Atobatele had been offered a doctoral degree admission in order to further his research on legal issues surrounding the war against insurgency in Nigeria.
This remarkable feat by the Nigerian Army officer is coming on the heels of the scathing criticisms by Amnesty International, which has always been at loggerheads with the Nigerian government over alleged poor human rights records of the country, especially with regard to the perennial fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country.
Indeed, this development has been described as a confirmation of the efforts of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and those of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, who believes that the war against Boko Haram is not only to be fought in the battle trenches, but also on the intellectual sphere. Not only that, this development has also substantiated the recent claims by the Defence Headquarters that serious steps were being taken by the military and other security agencies to ensure that in any operation, human rights issues must be held sacrosanct and that in all her institutions in the country, from the lowest to the highest, the importance and essence of human rights laws during armed conflicts are taught.
The need to combat the seeming international antagonism championed by the AI against the Nigerian government and the Army compelled the top brass of the Nigerian Army, led by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, to restrategise and take certain concrete steps to reposition the Army in its fight against terrorism and insurgency with a view to improving the human rights record of the force. The Federal Government recognised that a way to achieve this was through the provision of higher education opportunities in human rights for Army officers.
Therefore, in line with his vision “to have a professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles,” as well as prove Amnesty International, which is always accusing the military of gross human rights violation, wrong, Buratai deemed it fit to allow officers to undertake special courses focusing on human rights protection in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
The Nigerian military and the country are now set to reap the fruits of this ingenuity and investment by the chief of Army staff.
Buoyed by Atobatele’s brilliant and excellent performance in its LLM course in International Human Rights and Terrorism Law, the university has also immediately offered him a place in its Doctor of Philosophy programme for the 2019 academic session.
Documented testimonials obtained by our correspondent from the UK-based highbrow university attest to Ajibade’s “exceptional brilliance” throughout his course of study at the Lancaster University Law School.
The General Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Comrade Olayinka Folarin, expressed confidence that allowing military officers to go for such courses in human rights and returning to apply the knowledge acquired, regarding the observance of the rules of engagement, would ultimately help to regulate the conduct of troops during operations.
Folarin added that the efforts by the Army to improve respect for human rights of persons during their operations would also result in raising the rating of the country’s human rights record in the global arena.
The CDHR general secretary said, “I believe it will regulate their conduct as far as human rights is concerned in the fight against terrorism. It is a welcome development. It will enhance their performance; it will enhance their conduct. We just believe that by having their men studying such courses and coming back to apply it, it would go a long way in building confidence in the Nigerian military because everyone should be accorded his or her human rights. We must know that human right is the cornerstone of any professional practice.
“We just hope that the Nigerian military will see reason why they should be humane in their conduct and also take time to listen accordingly to the voice of the people. And the mentality that they are trained to kill can easily be addressed when the respect for human rights is there. When they are acquainted with what human rights entail and when they also understand that Nigeria is also party to several international treaties on human and people’s rights; it will assist them in their performance, in their operations. It will make them to be more professional and it will put our country in tune with the rest of the
    world.”
Speaking in the same vein, a defence analyst and strategist, Mr. Adesola Olatunji, said allowing military officers to undergo such courses would go a long way in checking the alleged violation of human rights of citizens by military personnel involved in combating terrorism and insurgency across the country.
The military expert added that the development would also improve the poor rating of the human rights record of both the military and the Nigerian nation by international human rights
    bodies.
“This development has brought to the fore, the commitment of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, in having a professionally responsive Army discharging its constitutional role in strict compliance with the various international conventions on human rights, especially in its war against terrorism,” he said.
    Military authorities decline to comment
However, efforts by our correspondent to reach the Chief of Training and Operations, Nigerian Army, Major Gen. L.O. Adeosun, for an update on the outstanding performance of the brilliant officer proved abortive.
Adeosun did not pick calls made to his phone and also did not reply text messages sent to him as at the time of filing this report.
  • Army holds inter-divisional training for officers

The Army has begun a joint workshop for Commanding Officers in units attached to 2, 6, 81 and 81 Divisions.

The workshop, according to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, was to enable the officers learn the application of leadership skills from their contemporaries, especially those serving in areas with such security challenges.

Held at the Nigerian Army Officers Mess in Marina, Lagos, the workshop, themed “Enhanced Leadership: Prerequisite for the Nigerian Army transformation to meet contemporary challenges”, was attended by over 50 Commanding Officers.

Gen. Buratai, who opened the training, said it was necessary to refresh the officers’ minds on current challenges to proffer solution.

The COAS, who was represented by the Corps Commander Signal Maj.-Gen. Muhammed Mohammed, said: “Bringing them together here is for them to share knowledge, understand the new directives and policy that will guide them to conduct and integrate with the society where they work so that we can achieve seamless cooperation.”

General Officer Commanding, 81 Division, Maj.-Gen. Musa Yusuf praised Gen. Buratai for approving the maiden joint Commanding Officers workshop, saying it would enhance the capacity of the trainees.

He said: “This will help officers effectively tackle dynamic situations and myriad of challenges facing their areas of responsibilities.

  • Army and May 29 inauguration

IT is not clear what the Nigerian Army wishes to achieve with the alarm it sounded over plans by alleged shadowy characters to stall the second inauguration of the Muhammadu Buhari presidency on May 29. On May 4, in a statement issued by army spokesman Col. Sagir Musa, the Nigerian Army alerted the public to what it believes is a subterranean plot by some disgruntled people working in collusion with foreigners to cause disaffection and engender chaos among Nigerians. The sole purpose of that plot, the army continues, is to ensure that the inauguration was disrupted.

Col. Sagir puts it blithely: “Some of these mischievous elements thought that we would not have safe and successful general elections but were proved wrong, hence they want to derail the scheduled handing over later this month and to scuttle the democratic process in the country.  Their body language and unguarded utterances seem to be in tandem with the above and imply tacit support for the criminals. For example, credible source has shown that some individuals are hobnobbing with Boko Haram terrorists, while others are deliberately churning falsehood against the security agencies with a view to setting the military against the people and the government. They are also demoralising troops and security agencies through false accusations and fake news…We also noted that foreign interests are also working assiduously to cause disaffection and divide the coalition Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to give room for the so-called Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) and its defeated local franchise, Boko Haram terrorists group, to resurrect.”

The attempt by the army to induce national paranoia is unlikely to work. It is possible that those who loath the Buhari presidency would want the government to come to grief one way or the other. But to suggest that such a malevolent objective could be procured by enemies of the government months after the conclusion of the election, and despite the pendency of a suit against the ruling party’s electoral victory, is to stretch credulity to its elastic limit. If, however, the government’s enemies are hard at work to scuttle democracy and rub the nose of the Buhari presidency in dirt, the army has done precious little to prove that point with the political statement they released two Saturdays ago.

Very little has changed over the decades, despite the hesitant but salutary steps Nigerian democracy has taken to entrench progress. Past military regimes were accustomed to spreading bogey accounts of impending insurrections and coup plots. Some were true, others were concocted. Indeed, those military governments became so used to believing their accounts of plots that they learnt how to deploy those ghastly stories to subvert protests and opposition efforts, rein in perceived enemies, and sometimes deploy them deliberately to destroy specific people, institutions and other targets. Col. Sagir’s statement on the alleged plot against the May 29 inauguration should, in a democracy, come from the Defence ministry. Political and politicised statements have no business coming from the army directly. They tend to suck the military into politics and give the unwholesome impression that troops are for a faction of the political elite.

The military should concentrate on winning the war against Boko Haram. It should not allow distractions such as reading “body language” and weighing “unguarded utterances”. They are unfit to make such assessments. Fake stories have become a global phenomenon. The army and everybody else must get used to dealing with them. But no matter how potent they are, fake stories and other sponsored stories have limited effects on the course of wars. Tactics and strategies, together with sophisticated military hardware and well-trained soldiers, often determine victory. In fact, critics may begin reading the army’s statement as a weak attempt to justify the troubles plaguing its troops at the war front.

Government spokesmen see bogeys where there are non, and sometimes the secret service in developing countries also feel obligated to come up with reports of subversions that exist on paper. After painful transcending the destructive intrusion of politics into service discipline and camaraderie, the military must never allow that era to return, even subtly. It is sad that democracy in Nigeria is not growing as it should, with institutions strengthened and public officials subjecting themselves to the rule of law, but the military can help themselves and the country by sticking to a clear-sighted approach to relating with democratic institutions. After all, they must know that the military did not, and could never, vote as one man, in one direction. That is why they must be above suspicion. Let them stick to their job and let those saddled with writing security reports worry over the fidelity of what they write.

  • Rivers citizens embarrassed by Wike’s needless allegation against Army GOC- Group

Rivers Progressive Council has warned the state Governor Nyesom Wike to stop ranting and face business of governance.
RPC asked Wike to find other ways of proving his popularity among Riverians rather than resorting to what they termed ‘utterances that amount to ranting that add no value to the state.’
The group said Wike’s recent incendiary comments following the general elections were unbecoming of a leader.
Tony Chris, President in a statement was reacting to the recent war of words between Wike and the Army over the latter’s claim of oil bunkering by the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army.
The group in the statement said Wike’s cantankerous behaviour on his part made it impossible for Rivers State people to productively and effectively review his dismal first term in office while setting agenda for his second term and that is assuming the Election Petition Tribunal and the judiciary as a whole allow him to cling onto the stolen mandate.
The group urged Army not to be distracted by Wike’s remarks.
    The statement below.
To ensure that he causes maximum distraction to prevent Riverians from having issue base engagement with his government, Governor Wike opted for a highly valuable target like the Nigerian Army to unleash his umbrage upon, knowing full well that Nigerians will not take kindly to one of the country’s best performing institutions being maligned. His permutation must have been that people will be so outraged with this kind of behaviour that they will forget the other evil deeds he has committed against Rivers state.
We have news for the governor. Irrespective of his heating up the polity in Rivers state, we shall continue to fine-tune modalities for holding him to account, even more so in his second term, for which his mandate remains contentious. At no time shall we allow his resort to verbally abusing others scare us from performing the sacred duty we owe to ourselves individually as leaders in our communities to hold those in position of authority to account.
The Council, like other law abiding citizens of Rivers state, has zero tolerance for thuggish and cultist behaviour irrespective of how highly placed the offender is. We therefore unequivocally disown Governor Wike’s comments against the Army, the Federal Government and politicians from other parts of the country that have been victims of Wike’s tantrums.
We want to categorically state that the views and claims he has expressed or made about these persons and institutions are private to him and in no way represent the high esteem in which Riverians hold the Nigerian Army and politicians of other ethnic nationalities; Rivers state is also unquestionably loyal to Nigeria.
Even as we seek the understanding of those that have been offended by Governor Wike for them to know that he acted pursuant to his private agenda, RPC nonetheless find it irresponsible for a full grown adult, one occupying a position of trust for that matter, to make unfounded allegations against an institution and individuals that have made so much sacrifices for the people of Rivers and helped to stabilize the security situation such that the state is making economy recovery.
It becomes more incomprehensible with the realization that the militancy and cultism that the Army helped to curtailed in the state were the products of his administration.
It is only delusion that will make Governor Wike think that his verbal attacks on people make him popular but we dare him to test this so called popularity by walking on the streets of Port Harcourt without the detachment of security agencies that accompany him and see the outcomes. He certainly would be lynched for the crimes the people of Port Harcourt know he committed against them. If he wants popularity he should find other means that positively impact the lives of the people instead of engaging in theatrics that benefit no one.
RPC therefore directs Governor Wike to unreservedly apologize to the military and all the officers he has maligned with his spurious claims so that he will not be compelled to take that walk of shame at the appropriate time. The apology must be accompanied by an undertaken to be of good behaviour going forward.
Meanwhile, we urge the military, particularly the Nigerian Army, not to allow Wike’s behaviour to define their perception and appreciation of Riverians, who are naturally peace loving and collaborative towards the attainment of the Nigerian aspirations. We use this opportunity to reassure the Army that it has the backing of the people especially as it will soon have to curtail the activities of those threatening to declare a Niger Delta Republic on June 1; these urchins are acting at the behest of top politicians from the region and do not represent the desire of the peace loving people of Rivers state.

  • Army: Foreign interests plotting to scuttle May 29

The Nigerian Army alleged yesterday that some unpatriotic elements were colluding with foreigners for the purpose of derailing the swearing in of newly elected government on May 29, thereby disrupting the democratic process.

“Some of these mischievous elements thought that we would not have safe and successful general elections but were proved wrong, hence they want to derail the scheduled handing over later this month and to scuttle the democratic process in the country,” army spokesman, Col. Sagir Musa said in a statement.

Musa alleged that the unpatriotic elements plan to do that by causing mischief and exacerbate security situation in the country in particular and West African Sub-region.

He further alleged that the group is making concerted efforts to further induce ISWAP/Boko Haram terrorists and bandits with funds and other logistic supports.

“Their body language and unguarded utterances seem to be in tandem with above and imply tacit support for the criminals.

“For example, credible source has shown that some individuals are hobnobbing with Boko Haram terrorists, while others are deliberately churning falsehood against the security agencies with a view to set the military against the people and the government.

“They are also demoralising troops and security agencies through false accusations and fake news,” Musa said.

He warned them to desist as the consequences of their intended actions would be calamitous to themselves.

“We also noted that foreign interests are also working assiduously to cause disaffection and divide the coalition Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to give room for the so-called Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) and its defeated local franchise, Boko Haram terrorists group to resurrect,” he said.

He, however, expressed confidence in the Federal Government efforts at sustaining and reinvigorating the MNJTF to continue its good work.

Musa also restated that the Nigerian army would not relent in clearing the visages and remnants of Boko Haram terrorists and their sympathisers.

“The Nigerian army is a stakeholder in our national security and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

“Additionally, we are making this statement because the military, particularly the Nigerian army has always been called upon to intervene in conflict situations in order to resolve crises in most cases when they get worse, while the public expect miracles.

“We will like to reiterate our unalloyed loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and we are determined more than ever before, to continue to uphold the constitution and defend the territorial integrity of this nation from both external and internal aggression.

“Nigeria is a sovereign country with clearly established judicial system, therefore all aggrieved persons and groups should take advantage of that and resolve their differences amicably,”he said.
