  • Fake BEDC workers arraigned for fraud

    A 34-year-old man, Ikechukwu Sunday, has been arraigned before an Evboriaria Special Grade Court for fraud and parading himself as a worker of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

    Sunday was also accused of collecting N100,000 to supply BEDC electricity meter to Udu Kelly.

    He was said to have also collected N10,000 from another person, Agho Favour, to repair a BEDC meter and disconnected some residents’ electricity lines.

    The accused was arraigned on three-count charges of fraud and impersonation.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Police Prosecutor, Inspector Olatoye Oluwaseun, told the court that the offences are punishable under sections 419 and 108 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State, as applicable to Edo State.

    Oluwaseun said the offence was committed at Ogheghe community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.

    Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. C. E. Oghuma, granted bail to the accused for N400,000 and a surety in like sum who must be a relative of the accused.

     

  • Nollywood actress arraigned for burglary

    An up and coming Yoruba actress and film maker, Yetunde Akilapa, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court for burglary and theft of valuables worth seven million Naira.

    The actress, 32,  who lives at No.7, Oladelola Street, Ketu area of Lagos, is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on burglary and stealing to which she pleaded not guilty. She came to limelight in 2013 when she starred in a Yoruba movie, ‘Ileri Oluwa’.

    Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that Akilapa  committed the offences on June 27 at No. 14/16, Mutairu Street, Shangisha, Ketu, a suburb of Lagos, at 2.10 p.m. According to him, the defendant was apprehended while trying to enter the apartment of the complainant, one  Mr Adeboye Lamidi. Lamidi alleged that he was in his sitting room when he noticed someone was trying to open the door to his apartment with a key from outside. He said Akilapa used a master key to unlock the door of the complainant’s house but was caught in the act.

    “l peeped through the door hole and l saw the accused trying to open my door with a key.”

    The prosecutor also alleged that the accused on November. 16, 2015 at 3.00 p.m. broke into the residence of Oyinlola Tuga by unlocking the door with a master key. Tuga, who lives at No. 39A, Ayodele Okeowo Street, Gbagada Soluyi in Lagos, reported that the accused stole jewellery, bags and other valuables worth N7 million.

    “Tuga alleged that after raising alarm that his house had been burgled, his neighbours told him that they saw the defendant parked her car with registration no. MUS 689 CZ in front of the complainant’s house.

    “They challenged her and found the stolen items and a hundred bunch of keys on her.

    “The defendant was arrested and handed over to the police at Ifako Police Station,” he said.

    The actress was earlier reported to be in the news for stealing and breaking into people’s homes years ago and has been on the police wanted list for the past three years.

    The actress was in the news in February 2013 when it was reported that she was arrested for robbery by the police in Alade, Somolu area of Lagos. She was sent to the Kirikiri Prison and after a few months, she regained her freedom in November 2013. In January 12, 2014, she was again caught trying to steal with a bunch of master keys hidden in her brassiere at a house in Magodo Phase 2. The offences contravened Sections 287, 307 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties. Sule-Amzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. She adjourned the case until October 22, 2018 for mention.

  • Dad, son, arraigned for ‘assaulting’ IE official

    A 50-year-old man, Samuel Abilagbo and his 20-year-old son, Moses, were yesterday arraigned at an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting an official of Ikeja Electric.

    The duo, who live at 2, Mount Sinai Street, Agbede, Ikorodu, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of breach of the peace and assault brought against them.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Mary Ajiteru told the court that the accused battered the official, Mr Ogbeke Harrison, while trying to disconnect the power supply to their house.

    “While the complainant wanted to disconnect electricity supply to their house, he was brutalised with stones and stick which left him with a permanent scar on his head.”

    The offence contravened Sections 168 (d) and 172 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sections stipulate three months and one year jail terms.

    Magistrate W. B. Balogun granted them N100, 000 bail with two sureties each in the like. The surties, he said, must be workers in reputable organisations.

    The sureties must also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Balogun adjourned the case till July 12.

  • Man, 39, arraigned over car theft

    A 39-year-old man, Clement Kingsley, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a Toyota saloon car.

    Prosecuting Inspector Peter Nwagwu told the court that Clement committed the offence on April 24 at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    Nwagwu explained that the car marked GG 127 ET belongs to Adetunji Taiwo. It is worth N2.3million.

    Nwagwu said the offence was punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state 2015.

    Clement pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Y.O. Aje-Afunwa granted the defendant N650,000 bail with one ‘responsible’ surety in the like sum.

    She adjourned till July 23.

  • Suspect arraigned for assaulting woman

    A 45-year-old man, Anaemena Cletus, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ekiti State, for allegedly turning a woman to a punch bag.

    Cletus, who is facing a one-count charge of assault, was alleged to have dealt several blows on the face and body of Miss Ronke Ayegoro, injuring her.

    Prosecutor Monica Ikebuilo said the accused committed the offence on May 27, about 5 pm, in Ijigbo, Ado-Ekiti.

    She said the offence contravened Section 351 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    Ikebuilo asked for an adjournment to enable her study the case file and assemble her witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mr. Timi Omotosho, urged the court to grant him bail, promising he will not jump bail.

    Magistrate Mrs. Omolola Akosile granted the accused bail at N20,000 with one surety.

    She adjourned the case till July 5 for hearing.

     

     

  • Police: we arraigned, rearrested senator

    THE police explained yesterday why Senator Dino Melaye was arraigned and later arrested at the Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja.

    In a statement, the Force spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood, said: “Senator Dino Melaye was arraigned in court by the police today, 2nd May, 2018 at Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse, Abuja for criminal conspiracy, causing damage to government property, attempted suicide and escape from lawful custody.

    “His arraignment in court today was subsequent to his discharge from the National Hospital after he was confirmed fit for trial.

    “It will be recalled that, on the 24th April, 2018, at about 1200Hrs, Senator Dino Melaye while in lawful custody of the Nigeria Police Force and being taken for arraignment for Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms in court in Lokoja, from Abuja, escaped from lawful custody when hoodlums and miscreants in two Toyota Hilux Vehicles blocked the police vehicle conveying Senator Dino Melaye around Area 1 Round About, Abuja.

    “In the process, the senator broke the side glass of the vehicle and jumped out of the police bus through the window and was rescued from the police men by hoodlums and miscreants to an unknown destination before he was rearrested at Zankli Hospital in Abuja later in the day on same date.

    “This case was investigated and that is why the senator was arraigned in court today.

    “Meanwhile, the police investigation team re-arrested Senator Dino Melaye today, 2nd May, 2018 after his arraignment at Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse for the pending offences of Criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms already filed in a court of competent jurisdiction in Lokoja for which he will be arraigned without further delay.”

    Moshood said Melaye is safe in police custody, adding that suggestions that the senator’s life is in danger was untrue, because he is in lawful custody.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

  • Man, 25, arraigned for ‘stealing’ cashew nuts

    •Four arraigned  for ‘assault’

    A 25-year-old man, Babatunde Filani, has been arraigned at a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ilupeju-Ekiti, Ekiti State, for allegedly stealing cashew nuts, valued at N150,000.

    Police prosecutor Matthew Omale alleged that the suspect on March 22, at 10am, on Adimula Farm, Ijelu-Ekiti, Oye Magisterial District, unlawfully entered the farm of Mr. Gabriel Adimula and stole the nuts.

    He alleged that the accused on the same date, time and place assaulted Mrs. Lydia Adimula, wife of his victim, by beating her up.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 81, 383, 390 (9), 355 and 249 (D) of the Criminal Code Volume 1 Cap16 Laws of Ekiti, 2012.

    He prayed the court for an adjournment, to enable him prepare for the case.

    The accused, who is facing a four-count charge of unlawful entrance, stealing, breach of the peace and assault, pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate John Ayodele granted the accused bail at N50,000 with one surety.

    He said the surety must swear to a “Means of Affidavit” and adjourned the case till April 26 for hearing.

    Four suspects; Frederick Adimula, 20; Timilehin Adimula, 16; Ojuolape Adimula, 17 and Tomilola Adimula, 16, have appeared at the same court for allegedly assaulting Babatunde Filani.

    Omale said the accused, onMarch 22, on Adimula Farm, Ijelu-Ekiti, beat up their victim.

    He prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him prepare for the case.   When the charge was read to the accused, they pleaded not guilty.

    Frederick claimed he did not know how Filani sustained injuries, but agreed that they fought when the latter was caught stealing cashew nuts.

    Chief Magistrate Ayodele granted the accused bail at N50,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case till April 26 for hearing.

    Man arraigned for allegedly killing teenager

    An FCT High Court, Apo, yesterday ordered the remand of a 28-year-old man, Abdulkarim Zubairu, in Kuje Prison.

    He was accused of killing a 13-year-old boy, Umaru Hussini, with a machete.

    Zubairu, a resident of Pangu village, Kwali, is standing trial on a charge of culpable homicide, an offence he denied.

    The prosecutor, Simon Lough, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence on October 1, 2013.

    He said Zubairu used a machete to cut Hussini’s hand, after an argument, resulting in the victim bleeding to death.

    Lough said the cutlass was later recovered on the scene of the crime.

    The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 220 of the Penal Code and is punishable by death.

    Justice Bolaji Belgore adjourned the case till March 13 for hearing.

    Protesting poly students arraigned

    Fourteen students, comprising 13 males and one female students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic at Owo in Ondo State, have been arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in the town.

    The police arrested them a few days ago during a violent demonstration in the town.

    The students were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court II, sitting at Owo GRA on a three-count charge of conspiracy, felony to wit stealing and malicious damage.

    The suspects are: Lukman Arowolo, 21; Iyanuoluwa Gift, 21; Olayinka Oyewole, 21; Aladejebi Temitope, 35; Oluwadare Gbenga, 26; Japhet Samuel, 21; Ayeni Samuel, 24; Lawrence Monday, 24; Titus Felix, 22; Emmanuel Segun, 23; Ayeni Temitope, 21; Ayeni Trust, 23; Olayinka Olalekan, 17 and Ayomide Opeyemi, 21.

    Police prosecutor, Sergeant Edu Owolabi, told the court that the offences contradict and are punishable under sections 516, 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

    All the accused pleaded not guilty and their lawyer applied for their bail.

    But Owolabi opposed their bail application.

    The Magistrate Mr Sunday Adedapo said he would deliver his ruling on the bail application on February 5.

    Culprits of South Africa killings arraigned

    The South Africans responsible for the attack on Nigerians in Durban and other areas were, on Monday, arraigned at a South African Court.

    A statement by the Nigeria Consulate in South Africa confirmed this to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

    The statement said consular officers in Johannesburg and the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria were in Durban to witness the court proceeding.

    With the latest development, Dabiri-Erewa appealed to Nigerians in the affected areas to remain calm and await the outcome of the judicial proceedings.

    A statement by her media aide, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, condemned the death of Mr Ebuka Okori (27), a Nigerian, from Anambra State, in the hands of two members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), on January 19.

    According to Nigeria’s consulate-general in South Africa, the late Okori was killed in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal Province, South Africa, on Friday.

    The statement reads: “We condemn the barbaric acts and call on the South African authorities to intervene and end this ugly trend.

    “We also call on Nigerians to continue to be law abiding, as we work towards getting justice for the deceased’s family.”

    The consulate added that investigation is on to unravel the cause of the death of another Nigerian in Rustenburg, North West Province, on January 20.

    Dabiri-Erewa reiterated her appeal to Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and shun acts capable of tarnishing the country’s image.
