  • LASU students arraigned for breach of peace

    Eight students of the Lagos State University (LASU) were yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for alleged breach of public peace.

    They are: Bolarinwa Olamide, 23; Oludare Samuel Olayinka, 18;  Fatukasi Timilehin, 19; Akanni Segun, 27; Babatunde Bolarinwa, 24; Ajayi Taiwo, 24; Olatimihan Taiwo, 20, and Victoria Oni, 18.

    They were arraigned before Magistrate Eniola Fabamwo.

    police prosecutor Samson Ehikhire alleged that the students, on Tuesday, hijacked a LAGBUS vehicle marked P004 with registration number SMK 719 XK, property of the Lagos State Government.

    The offence, he said, was contrary to and punishable under Section 166 (D) of the Criminal Law No 11 Vol. 44 Law of Lagos State.

    The students, pleaded not guilty.

    Mrs. Fabamwo granted each of them N10,000 bail with a surety each in the like sum.

    Magistrate Fabamwo ordered that the sureties must be the students’ relations. She adjourned the matter till August 6.

    On Tuesday, the students  took to the streets protesting the increase in their tuition fees. The protest caused traffic gridlock on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    The students also blocked the road leading to the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja, compounding traffic.

    They urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to direct the closure of the institution’s payment and registration portal, pending the resolution of the matter.

    Yesterday, the government said the crises rocking the university were being fueled by fifth columnists to  derail its plans for the school.

    Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba and his  Transportation counterpart Kayode Opeifa, told reporters that certain individuals were hiding under the crises to cause trouble in the state .

    Opeifa said the students’ union government and National Association of Nigeria students (NANS), South West, had met with the governor on the issue. the governor, they said, promised to look into the matter.

    “We have a responsibility to sit down and take decisions in the interest of the students, their parents, the institution and state government. We have also been meeting with other people for clarifications,” he said.

    Opeifa added that the committee  on the matter wouldn’t reach a conclusion till June 9. According to him, there are many issues to be resolved.

  • ‘Pastor’ arraigned for raping 12-year-old

    A self-styled pastor, Linus Ottis (28), has been arraigned by the police for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    At the Njikoka Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Magistrate M A Mbakwe admitted him to bail on N100,000 and a surety who must be a traditional ruler, president-general or a Grade Level 14 officer with landed property in Awka.

    The ‘pastor’ of Rhema ministry in Abagana allegedly raped the girl on September 3 in an Awka hotel.

    It was gathered that the victim, a secondary school pupil, is partially deaf, and now walks abnormally.

    In her ruling, Mrs. Mbakwe said the bail was conditional and might be revoked, if the defendant commits another crime within the time limit.

    A doctor’s report from Enuguukwu General Hospital, signed by the Chief Medical Director, Dr J O Atuka, showed that the girl was sexually assaulted.

    This, Atuka said, lasted from 8pm till the following morning, adding that she walked into the consulting room with a gait, consistent with severe vulva virginal pain and hearing defect.

    In Bayelsa State, a 45-year-old man, simply identified as Omo, was on Tuesday arrested by the police for allegedly raping an 11-year old girl.

    The victim was identified as a primary school pupil in Etegwe, Yenagoa Local Government Area.

    The suspect, who hailed from Edo State, was said to be married and has five children.

    Omo, it was learnt, lured his victim into an uncompleted building close to his house and raped the girl, who is a neighbour’s daughter.

    The victim was said to be bleeding after she was violated.

    Police sources said the victim’s mouth was stuffed with handkerchief while the rape lasted.

    The victim’s sister, who identified herself as Kate, said: “My violated sister crawled into the house crying in pain that the man raped her.

    “She struggled into the house to tell me what happened. I immediately arranged a vehicle and rushed her to a private hospital known as GloryLand Hospital. The bleeding was stopped and l obtained a medical report.

    “The man lured the girl into the uncompleted building under the pretext of sending her on an errand. Instead, he grabbed her and dragged her into the uncompleted building and raped her.”

  • Widow, lawyer arraigned for ‘Will forgery’

    Two lawyers -Samuel Urhoghide (75) and Mrs. Mercy Sheidun (46)- were yesterday arraigned at an Oredo Magistrate’s Court for the alleged forgery of the Will of the late Sir Kolawole Sheidun.

    Sheidun was the pioneer Managing Director of Okpella Cement Factory in the defunct Bendel State.

    It was gathered thatMrs. Sheidun’s step-children suspected foul play in the contents of the will, which bequeathed all assets to her.

    The children were said to have subjected the alleged Will to forensic test twice at the police forensic science Laboratory, D Department, Force CID Ikoyi, Lagos, where it was found to have been forged.

    An excerpt from the forensic report reads: “It is my opinion that the questioned signature in the relevant column of the document (testaments) marked Exhibit A5 is not the same with the standard signatures on documents Exhibit B-D (signed documents by Sir Sheidun).”

    A police source, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspects were, however, released on bail of self recognition.

    Also arraigned was Jonah Sojah, who was an employee of the late Sheidun.

    The Magistrate, Peter Asemota, admitted Sojah to a N100,000 bail and a surety, who must be a landlord.

    The case was adjourned till September 23.

    Police spokesman Moses Eguavoen said only the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) could give more details.

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘stealing’ bus

    A 28-year-old man, Ademola Daramola, has been arraigned before the Abule Egba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing a bus valued at N700, 000. The vehicle belongs to Okolo Robinson.

    Prosecuting Inspector Rachael Williams said Okolo had given the bus to one Victor Abang, the complainant, who recruited Ademola as “conductor” with whom he had worked for six years.

    According to Williams, the complainant parked the Vanagon bus at Oja Oba in Agege, a Lagos suburb, and asked the defendant to wait for him as he went to ease himself.

    “When he returned, he could not find both the “conductor” and the bus. So, he began to search for the conductor.”

    The defendant who pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of stealing brought against him under Section 285 (10) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos 2011, said he sold the gear box of the Vanagon bus for N20, 000.

    He told the court that he called the driver and asked for forgiveness, adding: “It was not the first time I would steal. I stole a kick starter from a Vanagon bus in 2006. I was arrested and charged before an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court, where I was granted bail. I am begging this court to have mercy on me.”

    Magistrate T. Akanni adjourned the matter till August 19.

  • Police chief arraigned for ‘assaulting’ lawyer

    A Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, yesterday arraigned Assistant Police Commissioner Tajudeen Bakre for allegedly assaulting a lawyer in his office at the police headquarters.

    The lawyer, Mrs. Oluronke Adeyemi, in her Direct Complaint Sheet, alleged that on June 26, the police chief committed the act, contrary to Sections 264, 265, 396, 397, 399 and 400 of the Penal Code.

    She said the action constituted an abuse of public office.

    Mrs Adeyemi’s allegation bordered on “criminal complaint of assault, criminal intimidation, use of insulting and abusive language, words and gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman and threats to life” against the police chief.

    The lawyer’s complaint, which was addressed to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Kwara Magistrate’s Court, said Bakre committed the alleged offence when she accompanied her client, Oba Daniel Dada, the Elegosi of Egosi, to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at the police headquarters following the police invitation to the monarch.

    Mrs Adeyemi also alleged that when she introduced herself as the counsel to the Oba and his chiefs, Bakre got angry and said he would not entertain any lawyer in his office.

    He was said to have ordered the lawyer out of his office.

    The lawyer added that attempts to make the police chief see reason further provoked him as he allegedly charged at the woman and “rained curses and other abusive languages on her, threatening to deal ruthlessly with her”.

    Bakre pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. I. O. Olawoyin, granted him bail on personal recognition and adjourned further hearing on the matter till August 14.

  • Driver arraigned for hitting FRSC officer

    The driver of a Toyota Camry car, Mr. Abiodun Agbaje, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ore, Ondo State, for allegedly knocking down an officer of the Federal Road Safety

    Commission (FRSC), Mr. Yussuf Salahudeen.

    Agbaje, who was driving the car with registration number DV 863 GGE, allegedly knocked down the FRSC officer on the Lagos–Benin Expressway, Ore in Odigbo Local Government.

    In a two-count charge, the accused reportedly committed an offence contrary to Section 10 of the FRSC (Establishment) Act of 2007 and punishable under Section 10(4) (J) of the FRSC (Establishment) Act of 2007.

    Speaking with reporters, the state Sector Commander of the commission, Mrs. Aderonke Daniel, said the driver was allegedly driving recklessly on the highway before the accident occurred.

    She said the victim did not die but sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital.

    Mrs. Daniel urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and other traffic offences, saying with a normal speed, it would be easy for a driver to control his vehicle if there

    is a problem.

    The case was adjourned till July 22.

  • Headmaster arraigned for ‘defiling’ pupil

    The police in Bayelsa State have arraigned a 55-year-old headmaster of a private nursery and primary school in Akaba community, Yenagoa Local Government Area, Akpolagha Agbugiye, for allegedly defiling an eight-year- old pupil.

    The headmaster appeared before the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Yenagoa.

    He was accused of inserting his finger into the privates of the pupil.

    The prosecuting lawyer, Roselyn Doctor, told the court that the incident happened on May 3.

    She said the headmaster committed the offence at the back of the school building after summoning the pupil to the hidden spot.

    She said the school boss asked his pupil to touch the ground with her finger and raise her leg after which he removed her pants and inserted his finger into her.

    She said the posture he placed the girl was supposed to be a form of punishment called “pick a pin”.

    “The accused asked the classmate of the victim to call her for him. When the two girls met him at the back of the school building, he asked the other girl to leave.

    “The headmaster then asked the pupil to pick a pin which the girl obeyed. At this point he pulled the girl’s pant and inserted his fingers into her private part”, she explained.

    The police prosecutor said the victim limped home and reported the incident to her mother.

    She said her mother later took her to the Federal Medical Centre for examination, adding that the doctor confirmed that the girl had been defiled.

    The police told Magistrate Patricia Edouyemiekumo that the hedamaster’s action is a criminal offense punishable under Section 146(2) of the Criminal Code, Law of Bayelsa State, 2006.

    However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    He was granted bail of N100,000 with two sureties residing in the state capital.

    The case was adjourned till June 13.

  • Pastor arraigned for ‘raping’ girl, 13

    A pastor, Fidelis Ajoke, has been arraigned before an Oredo Magistrate’s Court in Benin, the Edo State capital, for allegedly raping and eloping with a 13-year-old daughter of the General Overseer of his church.

    The Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) pupil told the court that the accused started sleeping with her in November, last year.

    In January, this year, she said, the pastor asked her to steal her mother’s money and give him for the treatment of his indisposed mother and she obliged.

    The victim told the court that she eloped with Ajoke to Ubiaruku, Delta State to avert the wrath of her mother over her stolen N170, 000.

    The teenager said the accused used part of the money to rent a house in Ubiaruku, where both of them stayed before he took her to Lagos and Port-Harcourt.

    She said her trip round major cities in Nigeria was cut short when a friend called her with her new mobile number while in Ubiaruku, that her photograph was shown on the television as a missing person in Edo State. The call prompted her to return to Benin, which paved the way for the pastor’s arrest.

  • Four LASU students arraigned for alleged cultism

    Four students of Lagos State University, (LASU) Ojo Campus, were yesterday arraigned before an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Mainland, for their alleged membership of secret societies.

    They are: Olaleye Jaiyeola Habib, 20, Olawuyi Olalekan Temitayo, 23, Olaosebikan Ibrahim, 22, and Akinniyi Adedapo, 26.

    Three of them, Temitayo, Ibrahim, and Adedapo are 400-level students of the Department of Economics; Habib is a 200-level student of Mass Communication Department.

    They were alleged to have conspired to commit felony to wit, by belonging to unlawful societies in March, 2013, on the Ojo campus of the institution.

    The police also alleged that while Habib, Temitayo and Adedapo belong to the Buccaneer confraternity, Ibrahim is of the Eiye group.

    According to the prosecutor, Inspector Frank Inah, the offences are punishable under Sections 409 and 42 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011. All the defendants pleaded not guilty.

    The defence counsel, Mr. Lanre Folahan, R. O. Olubambi, Emmanuel Adebayo and Lekan Adebanjo applied for their clients’ bail on liberal terms.

    They told the court that the defendants had been in the costody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in for three weeks without trial.

    The prosecutor did not oppose the bail application.

    Magistrate Mr. A. O. Komolafe, granted them N200, 000 bail sum of with two sureties each in the like sum.

    Komolafe also ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation to each of the defendants, while the other must be a Grade Level 14 officer, either in the Lagos State or a federal ministry, who must show to the court, evidence of a three-year tax payment to Lagos State Government.

    He said the tax, residential addresses and means of livelihood of the sureties, must be verified by the court’s prosecutor. The case was adjourned till April 24 for mention.

  • Ilasa-Ekiti robbery: Ex-bank manager, four others arraigned

    A former bank manager, Ayokunle Asaba (36), and four others were yesterday arraigned before an Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court for allegedly robbing a first generation bank in Ilasa-Ekiti on May 24, last year.

    The others are Dele Ajayi (29), Banji Adedayo (37), Tajudeen Salawu (22) and Akeem Ahmed (36).

    It was learnt that Ahmed, a former police corporal, served at Aramoko Division before he was dismissed for undisclosed reasons.

    On May 24, last year, robbers attacked Ilasa Police Station and a bank.

    They killed two policemen who were guarding the bank -a sergeant and a constable- and stole N7,833,000.

    At the police station, they stole four AK 47 rifles, one Berretta pistol, one smoke gun with 10 catridges, 10 hand grenades, one handcuff and 1,295 live amunition.

    The suspects were arraigned on a 13-count charge bordering on armed robbery.

    Although their charges were read, no plea was taken from the accused as the court lacks jurisdiction to hear the matter.

    Police prosecutor Enabulele Curtis said he had forwarded a copy of the case file to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice and prayed for an adjournment.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Funke Ajibade, remanded the accused in prison custody, pending the receipt of the legal advice .

    She adjourned the case till April 10.
