The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, yesterday confirmed the arrest of 22 suspects and a fake policeman in connection with anti-impeachment riot in Lafia, the state capital, on Thursday.

He said the police and other security agencies had launched a manhunt for four suspects, who were said to be the masterminds of the protest.

Although he said nobody was killed during the protest, he admitted that two people sustained injuries.

He said those wounded  were treated at Agu hospital and had been discharged.

He said while five shops and a residential apartment were vandalised, a vehicle was burnt by the rioters.

He, however, confirmed the recovery of a locally-made pistol, some ammunition, knives and dangerous weapons from some of the suspects.

Idris, who made the disclosures at a briefing after a Joint Security Meeting, asked those fleeing the state to return.

He said: “We have been getting information that people in and around Lafia have started to flee their homes based on media reports

“I wish to appeal to the media to verify their information before going public. Any misinformation can cause panic and escalate the crisis.”

As at press time, preliminary investigation revealed that the protest culminated in a bloody clash between Eggon and Gwandara youths at Tundun Gwandara part of Lafiahe Governor of Nasarawa State, Meanwhile, the state governor, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, yesterday said he had not been served an impeachment notice by the State House of Assembly.

The governor, who had a three-minute interview with our correspondent before leaving Abuja for Lafia, said he was not a corrupt leader as being insinuated by the State House of Assembly.

He said: “As I am talking to you, I have not been served the impeachment notice by the House of Assembly as required by the 1999 Constitution and the law of the land.

“So, it is not true at all to assume or claim that I had received the impeachment notice. Some people are just insinuating that I had been served.

“The House of Assembly can also not lay claim to substituted service on me because to do so, it must seek the leave of a court of competent jurisdiction.

“There is no record that the Assembly has secured any order from a court of competent jurisdiction for substituted service.”

On the 16 offences leveled against him by the House of Assembly, Al-Makura said: “I am not corrupt; I have not mismanaged the funds of the state, not to talk of diverting any allocation.

“I have served the people of Nasarawa to the best of my ability. The fact that they are overwhelmingly against the impeachment proceedings initiated by the Assembly confirmed that the people of the state are pleased with me.”

Asked of his next step, the governor said: “I have been consulting with different groups, the consultation is still ongoing.”

Governor Al-Makura’s clarifications came against the backdrop of revelations that some stakeholders are pushing for the probe of some  members of the Assembly over their roles in the N30 billion bond obtained by the state.

It was gathered that the stakeholders are seeking the intervention of anti-graft agencies, following indications that the disagreement between the governor and some of the lawmakers had to do with the alleged desire for more “perks” from the N30billion bond.

A reliable source said: “There is more to the impeachment proceedings against Al-Makura than meet the eye. The governor had sharp disagreement with the lawmakers on conditions the Assembly gave him before the state could go for N30billion bond.

“This is why stakeholders have agreed to call on anti-graft agencies to probe the lawmakers’ roles on how  the bond was approved. There were a lot of dirty undercurrents and demands on the governor.

“There were allegations that some of the lawmakers asked for five to 10 per cent cut of the N30billion bond before they could approve it.

“The stakeholders may also ask Al-Makura to open up on what transpired between him and the Assembly when the state was seeking the N30billion bond.”

  • Native doctor arrested for ritual killing

The Anambra State Command of the Department of State Service (DSS) has arrested a native doctor accused of being a ritual killer.

The suspect, Sunday Asika, aka Aboy Ekwensu (Satan) and his accomplice, Uchenna Ibeh, were accused of killing John Nwosu from Ahiazu Mbaise in Imo State and burying him in a sitting position.

The incident reportedly occurred on November 6, 2013 at Obinabo village, Nkpologwu community in Aguata Local Government.

Asika and Ibeh, who were handcuffed and paraded yesterday on the premises of the DSS, argued over who killed and buried the victim.

The native doctor confessed that he was a member of the Ogboni fraternity, adding that he had been in ritual killing for over 20 years.

The Nation learnt that the victim was killed by the suspects because he demanded the refund of the N500,000 his brother in South Africa paid to them for charms.

Briefing reporters, State Director of (DSS), Mr. Alex Okeiyi, said the suspects used an English double-barrel gun with serial No-8773180 to kill their victim.

When security operatives, who acted on a tip-off, combed his shrine, 10 live cartridges and a locally-made handcuff were recovered.

Okeiyi said: “Ibeh confessed that the native doctor asked the deceased to stay back for a sacrifice, only for him to kill him later, while (he) Ibeh buried him in a pit.

“Investigation showed that the deceased was an intermediary between his brother in South Africa and the native doctor.

“The brother, identified as Julius, sent him to the native doctor for a charm to make his business flourish, but the charm seemed not to be effective.

“The development forced the brother to demand the refund of his money, except the charm was made effective. That was Nwosu’s mission in the native doctor’s home before he was murdered and buried secretly.”

He said a homicide team from the police command led by a pathologist exhumed the deceased’s body.

Okeiyi described the native doctor as a terror, alleging that he gave spiritual protection to criminals in the Southeast.

He appreciated the assistance of the police command led by Usman Gwary and the courage of the operatives, who he said searched the shrine.

The deceased’s wife, Ndidi Nwosu, an expectant mother, was delivered of a baby girl in April.

She told reporters that being a housewife, things had not been easy since the death of her husband, a vulcaniser at Uga in Aguata Local Government.

The native doctor admitted that he killed Nwosu, but he claimed that he was buried by Ibeh.

Asika said the N500,000 he charged them had not been paid, while he borrowed N250,00 to prepare the charm.

He said he had never killed anybody except Nwosu.

Ibeh said he joined Asika in the act because he threatened to kill him if anybody heard of the incident.

He said he worked for Asika by repairing  things in his home.

Members of the Nkpologwu community rejoiced yesterday when they learnt of the arrest of the native doctor.

Two of them, who spoke to The Nation on the phone on condition of anonymity, alleged that Asika was a terror.

  • Cameroonian, nine Nigerians arrested for ‘stealing’ .36m litres of AGO

Cameroonian, nine Nigerians arrested for ‘stealing’ .36m litres of AGO

The Nigerian Navy has arrested a Cameroonian and nine Nigerians for allegedly stealing 360,000 litres of Automative Gas Oil (AGO) or diesel in the Niger Delta.

Troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO of the Central Naval Command (CNC) in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, were said to have apprehended the suspected oil thieves offshore Brass River, in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that a patrol team of the Navy intercepted a vessel, Mt Pauline, on Brass River on Friday.

The operatives were said to have searched the vessel and discovered 360,000 litres of AGO.

Ten suspects were arrested on board the ship, which the Navy impounded.

In a statement yesterday, the CNC said the ship lacked valid documents authorising it to carry the product.

The statement by the command’s Operation Officer, Commodore Emmanuel Enemor, said the captain of the ship was unable to tender the bunkering permit of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).

He said the ship lacked other documents, such as the certificate of registration with the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Pulo Shield, and a permit from the Naval headquarters.

The statement said: “On September 6, at 8am, a Naval patrol team from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO intercepted and arrested MT Pauline offshore Brass Rivers in the Brass Local Government area of Bayelsa State.

“At the time of arrest, the vessel was loaded with over 360,000 litters of automotive gasoline (AGO). The ship was arrested with 10 crew members comprising nine Nigerians and a Cameroonian.

“Besides, the captain was unable to document. Currently, FOB has commenced investigation into the source of the suspected stolen petroleum product on board of the vessel.

“The arrest and many others recorded in the past is a clear display of the determination of the naval commands to completely eradicate oil theft, illegal bunkering and other illegalities in the maritime environment.

“This further demonstrates the zero tolerance for the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Dele Ezeoba against oil theft and related criminalities in the maritime domain.”
