  • Man, 73, arrested for raping girl, 13

    A 73-year-old native doctor, Joseph Umuluku, has been arrested by the Warri ‘B’ Division of Delta State Police Command for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

    It was gathered that the suspect, a resident of Giwa-Amu Street at Okumagba Layout in Warri, lured the victim into a bathroom where he had carnal knowledge of her and inflicted serious injuries on her.

    A police source at the ‘B’ Division Police Station, who spoke in confidence, said Umuluku is a neighbour to the parents of the victim.

    According to him, the suspect has made confessional statement and the matter will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

    “The matter was reported at our station on Monday and the girl sustained serious injuries as a result of the rape.

    “However, the police are trying to seek medication for the girl, while the suspect is making confessional statement. He will be charged to court once investigation is concluded.”

    The President of Nigerian Child Welfare Fund, Comrade Joshua Omorere, who has been calling for the case to be charged to court, said: “It is a weighty offence that cannot be settled out of court. They live in the same compound and the man must have been doing it.”

     

  • Fake task force official arrested

    Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (TaskForce) on Wednesday at Mike 12 nabbed a tout, who has been parading himself as an official of the agency.

    Its Chairman, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said Abiodun Adeleye, 51 was nabbed under the Mile 12 Bridge after he had illegally arrested a Toyota Camry car for obstruction and collected N3,000 cash from the owner.

    A Motorola GP 340 security walkie talkie and the N3,000 cash he collected from the owner of the car marked MUS 319 DL, Egbeyemi said, were recovered from him.

    He advised motorists to report anybody not authorised trying to assault or extort them to the nearest police station or any law enforcement agency.

    The Chairman reiterated that government’s directive ordering touts and traffic officials of local government to vacate the roads and desist from controlling and enforcing traffic laws was still very much in force

    The car owner, Balogun Adebayo, was quoted as saying “The tout charged me N15,000 for the traffic offence he claimed I have committed under Mile 12 bridge but I was able to raised N3000 which he collected from me.”

    Task force said the accused confessed that he makes an average of N15,000 to N30,000 daily from illegal activities around Ketu and Mile 12 under bridge.

    Also, the enforcement team of the agency impounded 97 commercial motorcycles between Ojota and Ikorodu axis.

    The agency has warned members of the public not to engage commercial motorcycling on 475 restricted routes including major highways and bridges across the State.

  • Weapons found as miscreants are arrested at dump

    The police yesterday arrested 80 miscreants at the Olusosun dump in Ojota, Lagos.

    They recovered a toy gun, 27 knives, hammers and substances suspected to be Marijuana.

    The suspects were rounded up in an early raid of the site conducted by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Environmental Taskforce, counter-terrorism unit and Alausa Police Division.

    It was gathered that the state government directed the dislocation of squatters and shutdown of the dump recently engulfed by fire.

    Government’s directive, it was learnt, was based on findings that the inferno, which raged for about a week, was caused by activities of squatters.

    The Nation gathered that some scavengers and homeless persons erected makeshift structures at the dumping ground.

    The police said those arrested set fire on the site to prevent the dismantling of illegal structures.

    “Recovered from the shades built by the squatters were a toy gun, 23 pieces of fake US dollars, three cutlasses, 21 kitchen knives, six  butcher’s knives, nine hammers, five  reflective jackets, substances suspected to be cannabis, charms among others,” the police said.

    SHI’ITE members again staged a protest yesterday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) despite the detention of about 115 of their faithful by the police last Monday.

    The sect members, who disrupted activities in Maitama area of Abuja on Monday, moved their protest to Wuse market yesterday, disturbing people from gaining access into the market.

    The FCT Police Command spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, told The Nation that additional sect members were arrested for unlawful behaviour.

    The protests were connected to the detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, who were detained since 2015.

    According to a witness, the protest, which was about turning chaotic around the Wuse Market, was quickly quelled with policemen applying heavy dose of teargas and water to dispatch them.

    Reacting to the protest through a telephone call, Manzah said: “We received information that some Shi’tte members in their thousands converged at Wuse market, thereby denying other residents and other business owners access to the market.

    “Upon receipt of information, our men were deployed to the place to clear the road for those who have activities or businesses around the place in order for them to access the market.

    “Upon the arrival of police team, Shi’ite members started throwing stones and other dangerous objects at the police. After some time, we were able to arrest the situation and some of them were arrested.

    “We were also able to disperse them and create opening for people to access the market and also enable the free flow of traffic around the area affected. The area is calm now.”

    On casualty figure and number of those arrested, Manzah said: “I don’t have any details now.”

    Scores of the protesters and 22 policemen were injured during the violent encounter between the police and the Shi’ite members, 115 of whom were detained by the police.

    More policemen were deployed in strategic parts of the FCT yesterday over heightened insecurity.

    Armed policemen were seen in various parts of the FCT with most of them concentrated at Maitama, Central Business District, National Assembly complex and Wuse.

     

     

     

     

  • Why I was arrested by the police – Ekiti Lawmaker

    The Minority leader of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Chief Gboyega Aribisogan, said yesterday he was not arrested by the police because he committed an offence.

    He said he was nabbed on Wednesday to provide information about a crime reporter working for his newspaper, New Democrat, over a misunderstanding between him (the reporter) and politicians as well as military officers, concerning a story.

    The lawmaker, the only All Progressives Congress (APC) member in the Assembly, who represents Ikole 1, said before he was taken away, he called Police Commissioner Mr. Ibrahim Chafe, who advised him to cooperate with the eight policemen, who came in an unmarked vehicle.

    He said he told the police all he knew about the matter, as the publisher.

    Aribisogan, however, alleged that powerful politicians in the state and military officers were using the arrest to smear his image.

    He condemned the act.

    The legislator hailed the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for reforms that had ushered in new orientation in the force and thanked Chafe for his intervention.

    He praised men of the IGP Special Task Squad for their professionalism while investigating the matter.

  • Kogi kidnap gang’s suspected sponsor arrested

    The Department of State Services (DSS) said it has arrested Lawal Mohammed, the suspected major financier and armourer of the Basalube kidnap gang in Kogi State.

    A statement yesterday by an official, Tony Opuiyo, said Mohammed was arrested on March 23 at Japama in Obajana Local Government Area. Opuiyo said that the suspect was arrested with two other gang members – Mohammed Tukur and Abubakar Ibrahim – by a joint team of DSS and the military.

    He said Tukur was identified as the chief surveillance officer of the gang, who coordinates its movement across Rivers, Edo, Delta, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kogi and the FCT, in preparation for its operations.

    Items recovered from the suspects include three mobile phones and 25 bottles of psychotropic inducers.

    Opuiyo added that the DSS also arrested five suspected members of the Basulube kidnap gang at Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

    The suspects are Ali Abubakar; Abubakareem Idrisa; Bashir Tsoho; Sanusi Abubakar; Nuhu Muhammadu and Abubakar Abdulhammeed.

    He said: “They were arrested while Abubakar was perfecting plans to carry out kidnap operations in Obajana council in Kogi State.”

    The service, yesterday, arrested Abubakar Danlansu, driver and weapon courier of the group at Dikko area of Niger State.

    “The suspect was arrested en route Edo from where he was to convey weapons to Obajana.

    The service also arrested Matthew Ekam (39) in connection with the kidanap of Obianuju Onyema in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on March 12. Onyema was released on March 18.

    On March 24, the service also arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Mohammed Bello, on the outskirt of Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State.

    According to Opuiyo, Bello is believed to be carrying out surveillance activities for the extremist group.

    “At the point of his arrest, several mobile phones, multiple identity cards, including those of a police constable and neighbourhood vigilance member, and N37,857 were recovered from him,” he added.

    The Anambra State Police Command has arrested Emeka Osita (22), who escaped from Minna prisons, Niger State, during a jail break in 2015.

    Commissioner of Police Garba Umar stated this yesterday at the headquarters in Amawbia. He also paraded five persons for various crimes.

    According to him, Osita, who hails from Agulu Otu-Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area, named Ugochukwu Odumegwu from Ihiala as his co-prisoner. He answered Chukwuebuka Okwujinne Ozoregbue in prison.

    Umar said the suspect would be handed over to the state Comptroller of Prisons as stipulated by law.

    Other suspects paraded yesterday included Chekwube Anthony Nkemaka, who hails from Nibo, Awka South council, Ifeoma Acholonwa and Stanley Nwafor, both from Arondizuogu, for robbery. Chekwube Chukwu and Amarachukwu Orjiakor were also paraded for suspected fraud.

    Umar said the suspects will soon be prosecuted after investigations.

    Items recovered from the suspects include a locally-made single barrel pistol, three expended cartridges and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

    Kidnappers of expatriates, slain Taraba lawmaker arrested

    Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested kidnappers of the Canadians and Americans on the Abuja/Kaduna road.

    A statement by the spokesman, Tony Opuiyo, added that the kidnappers of the late Taraba Lawmaker Hosea Ibi, a Senator, a lecturer and an Army Warrant Officer were also arrested.

    They were arrested between last December and February.

    Isaiah Suwe (23), was said to have led the DSS operatives to Gbise in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, where Barnabas Torva Amadu (aka Ataminin); Aondi Tersoo (21); Nengenen Mbaawuaga (22); Aondoase Kayitor (18) and Ternenge Tersoo (19), were arrested for their alleged involvement in the kidnap and murder of Ibi.

    The statement reads: “Suwe is an accomplice of the notorious kidnapper, Terwase Akwaza (aka Ghana), who is wanted. Amadu participated in the kidnap and murder of Ibi. About nine SIM cards, different telephone brands and accessories, as well as a First Bank ATM card, a flash drive, one Voters’ card and one ID card, belonging to Moses Yaro, a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in Taraba State, were recovered from the gang.

    “On February 21, at Igu area of Benin City, Edo State, the service arrested five members of the Gemere kidnap gang – Usman Umaru; Abubakar Umaru; Garba Umaru; Abubakar Garba and Umar Bello – which operates on the Lokoja/Okene highway. They were responsible for the kidnap of some Canadians and Americans.

    “The service, on January 20, arrested the gang leader, Abubakar Muhammed (aka Gemere) on the Lokoja/Okene highway. He was killed in a gun battle.

    “On February 20, at Ambaliya area of Jalingo, Taraba State, Mohammed Babangida Isma’il was arrested in possession of firearms and he is being investigated…”

    Five arrested for diverting 40ft generator container worth N10m

    Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have intercepted a syndicate that allegedly diverted a truck carrying a 40ft container loaded with 608 pieces of Elimax generators and 2,900grinding engines worth N9.7million.

    Five members of the gang arrested are: Onyebuchi Okeke, 30, Sunday Chukwuwike 28, Onyebuchi Ede 30, Sopuluchukwu Eze, 30, Sunday Nwachukwu, 35, while one Ozor is still at large.

    The goods according to sources belonged to Sylveohemma Petroleum Limited, Apapa, Lagos, and was diverted by the gang on December 22, 2017.

    Following a petition submitted to the office of Inspector General of Police on December 23, 2017 by the company’s clearing agent, Nickson Budu , the IRT’s Commander, Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police was asked to fish out the culprits.

    The special squad subsequently arrested the driver and the truck conductor at Nkwere, Anambra State while they were negotiating with the receiver.

    The buyers were also apprehended and all the suspects have since confessed to the crime.

    Confessing, the truck’s conductor, Chukwuwike said: ”l am the motor boy. I am from Ihiala, Anambra State. It was the driver that brought the idea to divert the container and make fast money on the 23rd December 2017 at Tin Can Island at about 8.00pm when we were to take the container to Abuluchu in Festac area of Lagos but on the way we diverted the truck to Ikorodu.

    In his confession, Okeke said: ” Yes, I brought the idea to divert the container. We later took  the container to Nkwere in Anambra State, where the receiver collected part payment from buyers which is N430,000 and gave us(the money). Four of us namely Onyebuchi, Sunday, the other Sunday and Ozor who is still at large shared the money. We and the buyers negotiated N25,000, N14,000, N17,500 for some of the stolen goods which are giveaway prices.”

    Ede said: ” the only role I played was to provide my house as the warehouse where the goods were off- loaded. I am from Nkanu, Enugu State. I am a primary six certificate holder. They promised to pay me N200,000. When I saw that there were enough goods in the container that would fetch me more money I decided to join the gang.”

    Sopuluchukwu said: ”I am from Nkanu East, Enugu state. I used to do well in my business. I used to deal on men wears and I used to make #80,000 monthly but recession came and it affected my business. When my friend Nwachukwu called me and told me about the deal I jumpED for it. I will blame the devil also.”

    Eze recalled his role in the crime saying: ” They asked me to look for a safe place to off- load the stolen goods. I called my brother Ede and he helped to provide his house because he has enough space in his house. I was also interested in buying the goods.

    ”We contributed money for advance payment. I gave them #210, 000, Sopuluchukwu brought N250,000 plus the initial N100,000 I gave them. The total money collected for part payment was N510,000.”

    Police sources said about 120,000 pieces of the stolen goods have been recovered while the remaining are still to be recovered from the gang members house in Nkwere which was used as warehouse.

    Suspected car snatchers arrested

    Three PERSONS have been arrested for alleged drug peddling and vehicle snatching.

    They are Nosiru Adeniyi, 36, Olamilekan Abolade, 34, and Shola Sodunke, 30. They claimed that they embarked on selling hard drugs because they could not get a job.

    They urged the police to  free them.

    Parading the suspects yesterday, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said : ‘On December 30 at about 8.48pm, the operatives of the command arrested one Nosiru Adeniyi at the Sunday market, Ogba, while opening a car with a locally manufactured key.

    “After the suspect confessed, he led police to arrest his accomplices namely Olamilekan and Shola who are suspected drug peddlers on Wednesday.”

    The police  recovered 18kg of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp and 300 wraps of whitish substance suspected to be cocaine from them.
