Eid-el-Kabir: Three arrested as Oro worshippers attack Muslims, Christians in Ogun

Oro  worshippers truncated last Eid-el-Kabir celebration in about 20 communities of Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State last Monday and Tuesday.

No Eid prayer held in the affected communities as the traditionalists imposed curfew and restricted movement of residents.

The traditionalists had consistently flouted a directive by the state and local governments against daytime celebration of the Oro festival. It was learnt that three suspected Oro worshippers were arrested in connection with the attack.

Panicky residents of the affected communities, including Ifoyintedo, Atan-ota, Ita-ege, Iledu, Imule, Iropo, Akopin, Madoga, Ilagbe, Kajola, Osooro, Asipa, Ikorodu/Bola, Idologun, Araromi, Idomogun, Igbo-Atan, Oke – Iwo, Ajelende and Akinde Elepo-Temu/ Kusika were harassed by the traditionalists, it emerged.

The Oro followers also disregarded the instruction of the traditional ruler of Ifoyintedo, Oba Isaac Adetunji Adesiyan, against imposition of curfew and daytime Oro festival celebration in his domain.

The monarch’s secretary, Evangelist James Adeyemi, said during the Eid: “We are confused and equally disturbed that Muslims and Christians are being held hostage by Oro worshippers in defiance of Oba Adesiyan’s directive that the order of the state government and Ipokia Council Area against daytime Oro festival and restriction.

“Today and tomorrow have been declared as public holiday by the federal government but no one can go out now in this town because the traditionalists have kept us indoors since morning. I was almost lynched by the traditionalists after I attempted to beat the gong to tell people to go out on the instruction of the monarch. If not that I beat a retreat, I would have been beaten up by the traditionalists a few hours ago.”

The Chief Imam of Ifoyintedo, Alhaji Taofeek Ogunsoro, said that the traditionalists had initially promised to obey the state government’s directive against daytime Oro celebration only to renege. “I am sad. Instead of being happy on Ileya Day (Eid-el-kabir), my visitors, including family members, have been prevented from celebrating with me because of the mindless restriction by Oro worshippers who have disobeyed Ogun State government’s order stopping their daytime celebration.

“Both the Muslim and Christian communities here had series of meeting with the traditionalists, even on the eve (Sunday) of Ileya, and they promised not to impose curfew or restriction, only for them to start harassing us this morning. There is palpable fear here as we speak and the police have not been able to contain their excesses.”

At Ita Ege village, over 200 traditionalists comprising armed youths were said to have invaded the community to enforce the daytime curfew. The invaders, it was learnt, attacked residents who came out to observe the Eid prayer and headed to the palace of the monarch of the community, Apostle Mathew Ademola Abisoye, but were resisted by youths of the community.

Apostle Abisoye said: “The leader of the Oro worshippers had consulted his counterpart in neighbouring Ifoyintedo, and he was told that there would not be any restriction on Ileya Day.

“We were, however, shocked when about 200 traditionalists armed with dangerous weapons stormed this community to enforce daytime curfew on Monday. They hinged their action on the fact that our community is under the jurisdiction of their king and attacked our people. However, they were resisted by the youths of this community when they headed towards my palace in a bid to vandalise it, and the police from Idiroko Division succeeded in arresting one of them while two others were apprehended in neighbouring villages. The situation would have worsened if the police had not intervened when called upon.”

A community leader and chieftain of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the council area, Pastor Samuel Adelakun, said: “The government declared today and tomorrow as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Kabir muslim festival but traditionalists in Ifoyintedo disrupted the festival by imposing unlawful restriction on people. We asked them not to disturb the peace of this community on a day like this but they refused.

“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Idiroko Division led his men to this community at about 10:00 a.m. and warned the traditionalists against going ahead with their restriction of movement. But they defied the DPO’s warning as soon as he left here and started threatening to harm whoever dared come out. We are, therefore, calling on law enforcement agencies and state authorities to save us from the grip of the heartless traditionalists.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of Ogun Police Command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, explained that three suspects have been arrested and would be charged to court. He said: “The DPO of Idiroko Division visited the affected communities and told the Oro worshippers that it was not right for them to impose curfew, and that daytime Oro celebration was unlawful. However, three suspects were arrested in connection with the disturbance and they will be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, tomorrow (Wednesday) for further investigation.

“A few weeks ago, stakeholders, including leadership of CAN, Muslim community and traditionalists, had a meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the state command in Abeokuta and they signed an agreement to obey the law banning the daytime Oro festival in the state.

I can assure you that the police will arrest anyone found during investigation to be connected with the disturbance, and suspects will be charged to court. It is unfortunate that Oro worshippers are disobeying the order by the state government on stoppage of their daytime festival that comes with curfew or restriction of people.”

At least 20 were injured in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State on Saturday August 27, 2016 after a group of Oro worshippers attacked Christians during street evangelism on the popular Idiroko road that leads to the Customs checkpoint at the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

The incident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. at the Iko Grammar School junction shortly after the victims and other members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the council area began the street evangelism from St. James African Cathedral Church in the Mede area of Ajegunle.

The Nation reported on Saturday, August 20, 2016 outrage by residents and Christians after worshippers of the Oro cult flouted a directive by the state government to stop daytime celebration of its traditional festival and imposition of curfew.

The worshippers had restricted human and vehicular movement from Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14 in disobedience of the Ogun State Government’s directive. The government banned daytime Oro activities in all parts of the state on June 17, 2013 via a release with number OGR/OL/13 dated June 17, 2013 in Ogun State, but the dreadful Oro cult group in Ipokia Local Government resisted the order.

The Ipokia Local Government had also warned the Ifoyintedo Oro Festival Association to desist from imposing curfew and stop daytime celebration of their festival vide a letter dated August 26 and signed by the Director, General Services and Administration of the Local Government Area, Mr M.A. Adewole.

A copy of the letter titled ‘Re: Approval for Oro Festival’, reads in part: “I am directed to refer you to your letter dated 12th August, 2016 on the above subject matter and to succinctly remind you of the existing Ogun State Law that strictly forbid any form of day curfew (Isede) in any part of the state while performing any religious or traditional rites.

“Based on this, an approval is granted to you to perform the Oro festival from 28th August to 20th September, 2016 in Ifoyintedo, Alaari, Ita Ege, Afuye, Atan-Ota, Imule, Madoga, Iledu, Ilagbe, Iropo, Akopin, Kajola, Osooro, Asipa, Ikorodu/Bola, Idologun-Araomi, Idomogun, Igbo-Atan, Oke-Iwo, Ajelende, Idomogun/Igbo-Atan, Akinde and Elepo-Temu/Kusika.

“However, I am further directed to stress that on no account should you impose any form of day curfew (Isede) during the celebrations, that is, 28th August to 20th September, 2016. May I add that Oro celebration should not disturb free movement of traffic along the main road. This is very important in order, not to contravene the existing law/pronouncement of the state regulating any traditional /religious activities.“

A cross-section of residents urged the security agencies to apprehend chieftains of the Oro associations in order to contain their excesses. “The chieftains of the Oro worshippers should be arrested and prosecuted. This is necessary to stop the menacing traditionalists once and for all,” said a resident, Adebayo Akanni.

Pastor arrested for child abduction, trafficking

I only help people, says suspect

THE Delta Police Command has arrested a syndicate which specialises in child kidnapping and trafficking in persons.

The alleged leader of the gang, Chinedu Strongson, is a popular tele-evangelist based in Anambra State.

Pastor Strongson, 48, the founder of Gospel Fire Army, Nwkele-Ogidi, Anambra State, was arrested alongside four others.

As ringleader, Pastor Strongson allegedly pays N400, 000 for each child sold to him, the police said.

The state’s Police Commissioner, Zanna Ibrahim, who briefed reporters in Asaba, the state capital, said that two members of the syndicate were apprehended following a complaint by one Aisha Yahaya of Umuezei Quarters about a kidnapped one-month-old baby girl.

Ibrahim said that the two suspects, Chidinma Anikwesiri, 20, and Nnoruka Obioma, 21, were arrested while attempting to escape. Said the police boss: “One Aisha Yahaya ‘f’ of Umuezei Quarters, Asaba, reported at the ‘B’ Division that two ladies identified as Nnoruka Obioma and Chidinma Anikwesiri introduced themselves as members of State Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) and told her that her husband sent them from Ogwashi-Uku prison.

“The complainant further disclosed that she followed them to a junction where they met Abigail Nwakama aka Madam Cash who gave her N3, 500.00 to alleviate her poverty and asked her to buy clothes for her baby Fatima Yahaya aged one year and one month. In the process, the said baby was stolen by the syndicate.”

He added that the baby was recovered from Onyinye Nwakama, the 11-year-old daughter of Abigail Nwakama, at a drinking bar in Asaba. Abigail Nwakama aka Madam Cash and another suspect were arrested at Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area.

He said that the suspects led detectives to Nkwele Ogidi where 12 children were recovered from Pastor Strongson. Two of the recovered children have been handed over to their parents while the remaining ten children within the age brackets of six months to two years are being kept at an orphanage.

Strongson denied heading a child kidnapping and trafficking syndicate. He said: “I help people. So people bring people for me to help. I announce it on Odenigbo programme on 99.4 FM station that I am willing to help anyone pay school fees. There is an allegation that I am involved in child trafficking. I give people money generally.

“Nobody brought any person; the police only recovered two children who were brought for help. People bring children for me to help to pay their school fees. People come to me for spiritual help.”

On the source of the enormous wealth with which he helps people, Strongson explained that he runs five businesses ranging from land prospecting to restaurateur and football proprietor.

  • EFCC driver, others arrested for breaking into property seized from Badeh

EFCC driver, others arrested for breaking into property seized from Badeh

A driver in the employ  of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Nasiru Isa, is in the soup for allegedly breaking into a  property seized from a former Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd).

Sharing the same fate with him are: mobile police officer, Corporal Aliyu Ismaila; Abubakar Jibrin; Abdulsalam Ado; Ibrahim Babangida; Reuben Dauda; Hassan Aliyu; Sani Yusuf and Murtala Mohammed.

They will be arraigned for offences bordering on criminal breach of trust, attempted theft, conspiracy and impersonation.

Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said a mobile policeman, Corporal Aliyu Ismaila, and a carpenter, Yakubu Muhammad, were implicated in the alleged theft.

Uwajaren described the driver, who joined the commission about 18 months ago, as “a member of a criminal syndicate that attempted to break into a sealed property by the EFCC, with the intent of carting away goods suspected to be proceeds of money laundering.”

He added: “The syndicate includes a mobile police officer, Corporal Aliyu Ismaila, Abubakar Jibrin, Abdulsalam Ado, Ibrahim Babangida, Reuben Dauda, Hassan Aliyu, Sani Yusuf and Murtala Mohammed.

“Located in the choice area of Garki, Abuja, the property is currently under investigation by the agency, and became a subject of interest, in the aftermath of findings into the N3.9 billion fraud case involving a former Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd). The property was also linked to the wife of the former CDS.

“Investigations by EFCC operatives revealed that shortly after the property was sealed, some individuals moved about 12 bags believed to contain items linked to money laundering offence, into the property.

“On August 30, 2016 operatives of the EFCC as part of monitoring activities on the sealed property, had gone to site to execute a search.

“However, members of the syndicate took to their heels on sighting the operatives of the anti-graft agency.

“A carpenter, Yakubu Muhammad, who was hired by the syndicate was left behind and was subsequently arrested by the operatives.

“The carpenter, who has been cooperating with operatives, confessed that he was not in the know of the illicit activity, as he was only brought in by the syndicate to assist with the use of his carpentry tools to break into the property.

“Investigations revealed that one of those in the know about the goods was the brain behind the scheming to steal them.

‘The syndicate decided they would need to subdue the security man at the property, which would mean they would need to involve security man in the syndicate. Subsequently, Isa was contacted.

“To further beef up the security aspect of the crime, he also contacted his friend, Ismaila, who came for the ‘operation’ fully armed. In perpetrating the crime, Dauda had posed to be a senior staff with the EFCC, while Jibrin posed as an intelligence police officer in the office of the Inspector General’s office.

“However, nemesis caught up with them on August 30, 2016 when they were caught in the act of breaking into the property, having successfully overpowered the security guard at the entrance of the property.

“They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

Suspected ritual killers arrested in Delta

TWO suspected ritual killers, disguised as mentally challenged person, were yesterday discovered under the Otokutu Bridge in Ughelli South council area of Delta State.

It was gathered a would-be victim blew the lid on the suspects after managing to escape.

The latest incident came 12 years after police recovered decomposing corpses under the same bridge in 2004 from a gang of ritual killers.

The suspects were reportedly handed over to the Jeremi Police Division.

Attempts by our correspondent to confirm the arrest were unsuccessful.

Calls placed across to the Police Public Relations Officer Celestina Kalu (SP) were neither received nor returned as at the time of filing the report.

An eyewitness at the scene of the incident told our correspondent: “Two men looking lunatic attacked a woman who was gathering sharp sand along the road side on the Otokutu end of the bridge.

“They were struggling with her trying to drag her to their hideout under the bridge. The helpless woman started shouting and alerted passers-by.

“Concerned drivers and passengers began to stop to see what the problem was. That was when it occurred to the public that ritual killers have come to the bridge again.

“The crowd was still beating them when police came and took the suspects away.”

Another witness said: “Unlike in 2004 when the suspects caught were found with human carcasses of victims killed, no body was found under the bridge.

“But the sight of several school bags belonging to pupils, several clothes and women bags convinced the mob that ritual killers are back in Otokutu Bridge.

  • Policeman, three others arrested for ‘robbing’ 20-foot container

Four persons, including a police Sergeant, Victor Omorokai, have been arrested for allegedly hijacking a 20-foot container in Sagamu, Ogun State, last weekend.

The suspects were nabbed at Okokomaiko in Lagos by a joint team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Safer Highways operatives and men from the Okokomaiko Police Division.

It was learnt that four policemen attached to the Strike Team of SARS, Ikeja, on Saturday night blocked a trailer laden with auto spare parts, with their Lexus Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV).

The team led by Inspector Durojaiye Taiwo was said to have pretended to be on duty and flagged the vehicle down.

When the driver stopped, they allegedly pointed a gun at him and his conductor; tied them up and bundled them into their SUV’s trunk.

It was gathered that some of the suspects dumped the driver and his conductor in the bush and sped off to join their accomplices who were driving the trailer towards Agege.

The suspects were said to have stopped at abbatoir in Agege, where they contacted a prospective buyer who came and inspected the goods but did not have the N30 million they asked for.

The victims were said to have out of the bush and reported the incident at the nearest police station.

A police source said the trailer’s owner, on being contacted, told the police that the vehicle has a tracking device.

The vehicle was tracked to abbatoir and the Lagos Police command was contacted.

“The police then started monitoring their location as they were moving and tracked them to Agege. Three police units made up of the SARS, Safer Highways and the Okokomaiko Police Division were deployed.

“The teams blocked the various entry and exit points. The suspects contacted another buyer and were moving towards Okokomaiko when the police stopped the container.

“At first, they pretended they were policemen who arrested the truck but when they saw that they were in trouble they started shooting. While three of them managed to escape, Sergeant Omorokai was arrested. Three civilians have also been arrested in connection with the crime,” said a police source.

The Nation gathered that Inspector Taiwo and the other two officers, who shot sporadically when they were intercepted, escaped because they were inside the Lexus SUV; Omorokai was in the trailer.

After their escape, the suspects were said to have returned their guns, which they collected from exhibits retrieved from armed robbers.

“The guns they used were exhibit guns. They returned them that very night, when no one knew what has happened. They would not have been able to return them if they were signed from the armoury because they would have been asked why they were returning their guns in the night.

“It is not the first time they are doing it. Inspector Taiwo has been named in several operations like that and the mallam that they were going to meet at Okokomaiko claimed that the Inspector took his N30 million.

“Those inside the Lexus were able to escape because they were firing. But the Sergeant was arrested because he was the one inside the trailer. The Commissioner of Police (CP) is very angry over this issue and he has given us one week to look for the fleeing suspects.

“They are disgracing the police. It is a very shameful thing,” said another source.

Confirming the arrest, the state command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos said: “They (suspects) were trailed to Okokomaiko where they were arrested. The case is still under discreet investigation.”

  • Warring Mushin gang leaders arrested

Calm has returned to Mushin, scene of gang wars spanning years, following the arrest of the leaders, The Nation gathered.

The foot soldiers called boys, it was learnt, have fled, following their leaders’ arrest.

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Mr Dawodu Olatunji has hailed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the restoration of peace in the area.

“For two months now, peace has returned to Mushin. Thanks to our governor, who ordered the arrest of the gang leaders and their boys disappeared.

“Mushin is now safe, no longer a hotbed of criminality. The hoodlums are killing themselves and not hoodlums versus the people,” he said.

Olatunji thanked the governor for his intervention, saying the criminals are not from Mushin, but from other parts of the state.

“I am born and bred in Mushin and like others; we grew up to imbibe some virtues

to become responsible citizens. Not everybody in Mushin is criminals.”

He noted that gangsterism, not robberies had reigned in the area, saying “ the supremacy fight between the gangs had always unleashed a reign of terror on Mushin.”

He blamed politicians for allegedly raising armed gangs for elections and advised youths to reject guns and banditry and go for empowerment and jobs.
