  • Sevilla, Atletico, Arsenal gun for Ogbonna

Italian – Nigerian defender Angelo Ogbonna is not in the plans of new Juventus manager, Max Allegri, and will be allowed to look for a new employer this summer.

Sportmediaset.it says clubs based overseas are monitoring the transfer situation of the Italy National Teamer.

Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are believed to be on the trail of Ogbonna, who is available for a transfer fee of 12 million Euros.

Given the caliber of clubs interested in the stopper, he would be sold to a team that bids highest for him.

The 26 – year- old is tied to Juventus until the end of the 2017 – 2018 season.

Arsenal stars hit the hit weights in pre-season training

Pre-season training is all about building up strength for the gruelling campaign ahead, and Arsenal have wasted no time in getting ship-shape.

Gunners stars including Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla were all pumping the iron in strenous excercises at the Gunners‘ London Colney base.

Arsene Wenger was on hand to put his side through their paces as the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Kieran Gibbs got ready for the new season.

Arsenal kicked off their pre-season schedule with a 2-0 win at Boreham Wood on Sunday before Saturday sees them start their USA tour with a match against Gunners legend Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls.

Ahead of their tour, Wenger said he can’t wait to play in a country where the World Cup was so widely embraced.

‘It is the first time since I [started to] go to World Cups that I’ve been stopped by so many American people,’ he told Arsenal’s official club website

‘I can tell you something I’m completely convinced of – before people didn’t know who you were, but now every American guy I met knows Arsenal, knows England and knows the Premier League.

‘The enthusiasm about soccer in the States is new but big. I expect us to have a good crowd there.

‘I hope that we can help to develop the interest in the game and that we can play a good match there to make people enjoy it.

‘It is the perfect time to go. I always wanted to go with Arsenal to the United States, so I’m personally very happy to do it.’

  • Arsenal targeting top trophies —Cazorla

arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla wants the Gunners to build on their FA Cup triumph by winning the Premier League or the Champions League next season.

Arsene Wenger’s side ended their nine-year run without a trophy by beating Hull at Wembley in May and have made a splash in the summer transfer window by signing Alexis Sanchez.

With the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Sami Khedira also linked with a move to north London, Cazorla is confident Arsenal can hit new heights in 2014-15.

“We hope to win more trophies – I want to win the Premier League or Champions League,” he said at the launch of the club’s new PUMA kits.

“Of course we can win. We have a good team and with the support of the fans it’s important for us.

“We have high expectations to go better than last year. We won a trophy last year and we want to do it again. Hopefully we’ll make some great signings to support the squad and if so, it’ll be good.”

  • Ajayi to make Arsenal debut

    Ajayi to make Arsenal debut

19 year-old ex-Nigeria Under-20 invitee Semi Ajayi is in line for his Arsenal first team debut after being listed in the match day squad for Arsenal’s first pre-season game against Boreham Wood.

Ajayi joined Arsenal last season from Charlton Athletics but despite training with the main team on so many occasions last season he failed to make the match day squad for any of the Gunners game in the entire tournament they played.

However, Ajayi’s big chance to impress manager Arsene Wenger was presented to him following the absence of the club’s regular centre backs who were all involved at the World Cup with Metesacker’s Germany up against Argentina in the final on Sunday.

He made quite an impression last season on his debut for Arsenal B team, scoring with a header in a victory over Blackburn Rovers before turning in an impressive display against West Bromwich Albion at Emirates Stadium in the next fixture prompting the coaching staff to offer him a two-year contract at the club.

Tip to pair with returning Spanish centre back Ignasi Miquel in today’s game, Ajayi still needs to fend off competition from another Spanish youngster Julio Pleguezuelo rumoured to be named as the club’s fourth-choice centre-back for the new season, at just 17 years of age.

Last season Ajayi spent time on loan at Conference side Dartford last season and featured for Norwich City during pre-season prior to being offered a trial with Arsenal and played four friendly games for Nigeria Under-20 team before the World Youth Championship 2013 in the UAE.

He is still eligible for England as he was born in the country to Nigerian parents.

Lukaku: I don’t understand why Ozil left Real Madrid for Arsenal

The Germany international has been criticised for his performances since the record-breaking move from Real Madrid, with below-par displays continuing into the World Cup

Romelu Lukaku has questioned Mesut Ozil’s decision to leave Real Madrid for Arsenal in a playful dig on Twitter.

Arsene Wenger brought the Germany international to the Emirates Stadium last summer, smashing the club’s transfer record with a €53 million move.

After starting strongly at Arsenal, Ozil’s form in the Premier League came under the microscope and he has again been criticised for below-par displays in Brazil.

The 25-year-old was one of Germany’s poorest performers as Joachim Low’s side stunned hosts Brazil in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday and Lukaku has jokingly questioned Real Madrid’s reasons for selling him.

No dissrespect to Arsenal who is also a big club but i don’t understand why ozil has left real madrid…. I guess will never know..

Lukaku was also the subject of criticism at the World Cup and lost his place in Belgium’s starting line-up to 19-year-old Lille striker Divock Origi, but did play a key role as Marc Wilmots’ side beat USA in the last-16.

  • No Arsenal commitment from Vermaelen

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen revealed he is unsure whether he will stay with the London club for the 2014-15 season.

Vermaelen has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and the 28-year-old defender added fuel to the fire of those rumours on Monday.

Having left Brazil after Belgium’s FIFA World Cup campaign ended at the quarter-finals stage, Vermaelen refused to commit his future to Arsenal, where he has spent the past five seasons, although he confirmed he plans to discuss a possible new deal with the Premier League club.

“I really do not know where I will play, Arsenal or elsewhere next season,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“All my attention went to the World Cup. I will see when I talk with Arsenal.”

Vermaelen has a year left on his contract with Arsenal but played just 14 league matches last season, as he fell behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as one of Arsene Wenger’s preferred central defenders.

  • Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea race for unsettled Balotelli

Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea race for unsettled Balotelli

LIVERPOOL, Arsenal and Chelsea are monitoring Mario Balotelli’s situation at AC Milan after the striker indicated he could be ready for a move back to England.

Reports suggest that Balotelli has grown tired of the racist treatment he receives in his homeland and is now open to a return to the Premier League.

Additionally, the combustible Balotelli has tested Milan’s patience this season with occasional petulant outbursts that have grated with the club’s hierarchy.

But while all three clubs are interested in signing Balotelli if he becomes available, none of them see him as their first choice.

It is thought that Arsenal consider Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema their priority and are already in talks with the Spanish club over a move.

However, with Real on a high after claiming their tenth Champions League title over the weekend, the Gunners are wary that they may not be able to prise Benzema away.

In that event it is believed that Arsene Wenger would pursue talks with Balotelli’s representatives.

Similarly, Liverpool see Balotelli as the ideal man to replace Luis Suarez should he be tempted away after the World Cup.

The Anfield club are confident it won’t come to that after Suarez’s recent positive comments about staying in England, but are preparing for the worst-case scenario in any event.

Chelsea could similarly enter the race if they miss out on their top striking targets this summer, with Jose Mourinho familiar with the enigmatic player from his time in charge at Inter Milan.

    Atletico Madrid win La Liga

Arsenal on Saturday ended its nine years trophy drought with a come –from-behind 3-2 victory over Hull City at Wembley.

Aaron Ramsey was Arsenal’s hero, scoring in the 109th minute to send the hard fighting Hull City into despair.

The match started at a frenetic pace and it was the underdogs who first threatened.

They were duly rewarded with two quick goals through James Chester and Curtis Davies in the 4th and 8th minute.

Midfielder Santi Cazorla pulled one back for Arsenal in the 17th minute.

The Gunners were in the ascendency in the second half and were back on level terms through Laurent Koscielny in the 71st minute.

The match stood at 2-2 at the end of regulation time. During extra time, the Gunners continued from where they stopped during regulation time and were duly rewarded through Welsh international Ramsey.

In Spain, Atletico Madrid won its first La Liga crown in 18 years after playing a 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Nou Camp.

Alexi Sanchez 34th minute strike put the Catalan giants in front, while Atletico restored parity few minutes later through Diego Gordin who slotted in Gabi’s assist to stun Barca supporters in the Catalan capital.

  • FA Cup: Can Arsenal end nine-year trophy drought?

FA Cup: Can Arsenal end nine-year trophy drought?

Can Arsenal end a nine-year trophy drought in Saturday’s English FA Cup final against Hull City?

The match starts at 5pm Nigerian time in Wembley.

The pressure is on Arsenal ahead of the game because of its clear favourites tag and the quality of players expected to be on duty for the Arsene Wenger side on Saturday evening.

Interestingly, it was in this tournament back in 2005 that the north London club secured their last piece of silverware, when they beat Manchester United on penalties.

The win against the Tigers today could bring back Arsenal’s lost glory.

The “Gunners” have since lost two League Cup finals (in 2007 and 2011) and were beaten by Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final.

Probably, the most painful defeat was in the 2007 Carling Cup final when Wenger‘s men surprisingly lost to Birmingham City. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and centre-half Laurent Koscielny howler gave Alex McLeish’s side their first piece of silverware since 1963. Substitute Obafemi Martins’ 89th minute strike separated the two sides.

Arsenal started the season on a bright note, raising hope of the club’s supporters that they could challenge for the English Premier League title, but floundered as the season entered home stretch. But as usual, the club secured Champions League football for a 17th consecutive season.

Wenger is quite aware of the fans’ expectation on Saturday and has expressed confidence that the pressure of the club’s nine-year trophy drought will not derail his side against Hull City.

“No matter what the result is, this club — and this is always most important — can deal with the consequences of any game,” Wenger said.

“What is important is that we come out of the game and have the feeling that we gave absolutely our best, our total energy to play at our best, and then you always accept the consequences.

“No matter how much we talk about it, you can win and lose, but you want to come out of the game feeling you have done the maximum to win and that is what we want to achieve.”
Should Arsenal leave Wembley without the FA Cup, the questions will rise again about whether he can ever regain the touch of a decade ago, and whether he has lost the ability that came as second nature after he arrived at Highbury in September 1996.

Wenger has shown every indication of extending his stay as Arsenal manager, dismissing rumoured interest from former club Monaco. But how would such disappointment sit with him and a passionate fan base desperate for trophies rather than the consolation of a top-four place in the Premier League?

If Arsenal wins, however, Wenger has every right to paint the season as a successful one.

20 years to the week since lifting the FA Cup as captain of Manchester United, memories of that illustrious day still burns as intensely as ever for Hull’s boss Steve Bruce.

In an illustrious playing career which also yielded three Premier League titles, European Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup honours, Bruce admits his three FA Cup winners’ medals – the latter as a non-playing squad member in 1996 – have an extra-special place.

During his nine years as a player with Manchester United he prepared for the FA Cup final on no fewer than four occasions in six years. Wins came in 1990 and 1994 before defeat followed in 1995. A year later he failed to make the cut as United beat Liverpool.

Bruce relishes the role of underdog against ‘mighty Arsenal’ ahead of the encounter and an FA Cup final against Arsenal, the biggest fixture of his managerial career.
“It’s just dawned on me that we’re here,” said Bruce, surveying the room.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to win it before but to go as a manager I never thought that would be possible. I’m going to enjoy the occasion and take a deep breath. There can’t be anything better than what we’re about to go through.”

“It can be over in a blur,” said Bruce, offering early words of advice. “Not many of them are married but I told the players it’s a bit like your wedding day. Before you know it, you’re married and before you know it, the FA Cup final’s gone.

“That’s what it was like for me. You’ve got to try to grasp the occasion and enjoy it. If you’re not careful, it just goes past you.

“The memories of the FA Cup are the ones you cherish, when you’ve finished your playing career. The ones you really remember are your FA Cup days and believe me, it’s far better when you’ve won one than when you’ve lost one.

“I’ve experienced losing but more importantly I’ve experienced winning, so let’s hope it’s our day.”

Arsenal finished the season fourth on the table while Hull City ended 16th in the Premiership table.
