Chelsea on top by Christmas – Mikel

Nigeria star Mikel Obi has said Chelsea aim to be top of the English Premier League table by Christmas.

The London club is fourth on the table with 33 points, three points behind leaders Liverpool and faces a litmus test in Monday’s capital city derby against local rivals Arsenal.

And on Boxing Day the former European champions host Swansea City.

“We want to be top of the table by Christmas and that’s what we are aiming for,” MTNFootball.com quoted Mikel as saying on Premier League Television (PLTV).

“We need to put the finishing touches and finish off chances when we get them. At the same time we have to defend well too.

“We want to go to the Emirates Stadium on Monday night and prove what we are made of.

However, the Nigeria international midfielder is first to admit Arsenal will be a hard nut to crack at the Emirates.

“There has been some stability at Arsenal. And I think people criticizing the team for failing to win a trophy have helped too. Arsenal has not won a trophy yet but you can see the team is heading in the right direction,” he said.

“Arsenal has a very good chance of winning the league title but so do we.”

Mikel said “The Special One” Jose Mourinho loves to win and hates losing.

“Mourinho makes his views clear to us after games,” he said. “If we win, he’s happy. If we don’t, he’s not. Hopefully, by Monday, we will put things right. We are playing well and we are doing a few things correctly.”

  • Man City crush Arsenal 6-3

    Man City crush Arsenal 6-3

Manchester City beat Premier League leaders Arsenal 6-3 in a thrilling game at the Etihad Stadium Saturday.

The first chance of the game fell to the visitors as Jack Wilshere volleyed a deep cross wide of the far post.

City capitalised on the miss, immediately winning a corner at the other end of the pitch, from which Sergio Aguero volleyed in Martin Demichelis’s near-post flick-on.

Vincent Kompany set up Alvaro Negredo as the home side looked to increase their advantage over the league leaders, but Nacho Monreal made it difficult for the striker, who eventually sliced his finish wide.

The Gunners were able to get themselves back on level terms after 31 minutes as Theo Walcott unleashed a hopeful strike from the edge of the box, which swerved past a disorientated Costel Pantilimon.

However, Negredo was able to restore the lead for Manuel Pellegrini’s side shortly after when Pablo Zabaleta delivered a square cross into the box to leave the striker with a tap in.

As the game approached half time, Laurent Koscielny left the field with an injury and was replaced by club captain Thomas Vermaelen.

Five minutes after the break, Fernandinho opened his Man City account with a curled effort from the edge of the area to put Manchester City 3-1 up.

Three minutes later, Aguero left the field with an injury, and Walcott reduced the deficit to just one goal once again in the 62nd minute with a whipped finish following intricate build-up play involving Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey.

Within three minutes of Walcott’s second goal, though, the home side restored their two-goal advantage. Substitute Jesus Navas skipped past the challenge of Monreal and from the winger’s cross, Silva sidefooted a finish beyond the reach of Szczesny.

Wilshere almost grabbed Arsenal’s third goal with a 25-yard strike with 20 minutes remaining, but Panitilimon was equal to the midfielder’s powerful shot.

With Arsenal chasing the game, the home side took advantage of the space in behind the Arsenal defence, and Navas almost sealed the game when he rounded Szczesny, but the Spaniard could only direct his shot from a tight angle into the side-netting.

Three minutes before full time, Fernandinho jinked past two Arsenal challenges in the area and lifted a finish over Szczesny to make it 5-2.

With 88 minutes on the clock, Nicklas Bendtner thought he had got his name on the scoresheet, only for his header to be ruled out for offside, but Per Mertesacker did get a late consolation for the visitors with a 94th-minute header.

In the last of five minutes of injury time, Yaya Toure sent Szczesny the wrong way from the penalty spot after the Polish goalkeeper had brought James Milner down in the last action of an enthralling game.

  • Amassing our spiritual arsenal

    Amassing our spiritual arsenal

We are in a very real war. The stakes are high, the enemy skilled, heavily armed and determined. We are living in the crossfire of this spiritual war; struggling to shield ourselves from the shackles of spiritual wickedness. But we seem not to have any headway because our struggle is carnal and therefore humdrum.

The devil and his cohorts are restless in ensuring that mankind lost the battle. This he does by deploying different killer strategies to maim and destroy. Realising this, Christians are urged to bear in mind that a hostile strike requires completely different and neutralising tactics.

Mindful of this, Pastor Joses Hizkiah; the helmsman of Unfailing Life Ministry has produced what might be termed “tips for neutralising devilish attacks.” This he did by publishing this manifestly helpful book Weapons of Our Warfare.

He maintained that “Weapons of our warfare is good at all points, good for defence and for attack, to guard our whole person or to strike through the joints and marrow of the foe.”

The book instructs that “we must understand that our warfare is fought with the mind set of a winner; for Jesus Christ has won the battle …

Weapons of Our Warfare is a book of 19 chapters spread over184 pages excluding the 14 pages of prelims. It is compartmentalised into two sections namely “Principles of Spiritual Warfare” in part one which is made up of 10 chapters and “Armour for Warfare” in part two which boasts nine chapters.

The book sets off with the introduction where Pastor Hizkiah reveals that “the Word of God is very comprehensible about the fact that negative spiritual powers are behind the woes and the battles that many Christians go through,” even as he maintained that “the full armour of God is our spiritual defence against all the attacks of the evil one which is the devil and other fallen angels.

These weapons of our warfare are manifested in the intrinsic energy of the Holy Spirit…released upon us at baptism of the Holy Spirit.”

The author opines that our motives, operational mode, purposes, war tactics and goals change from natural to supernatural once we switch camp from carnal beings to a born anew spiritual being redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.

Reeling off the three stages or steps of spiritual warfare, Hizkiah said they are manifested in demolishing all that are opposed to Christ, holding captive and bringing into obedience to Christ all that were at one time opposed to Him.

Acquiescing with the views of Joyce Meyer in her book Battlefield of the Mind, Pastor Hizkiah said: “[We are] maintaining our faith walk and tearing down all the strongholds or fortresses of ungodly thoughts, imaginations, reasoning and lies that Satan uses to delude and deceive [us] in order to hold captive…It is time to demolish evil forces with the sword, truth and the Spirit. Get set to use your offensive and defensive artillery weapons which have the capability to deflect with the shield, the sword of the spirit to pierce asunder, truth to set free, feet shod with the gospel to gain a sure footing, helmet to protect the mind from wrong thoughts and effectual fervent prayer …to involve the God-head who answers prayers…”

The author described Satan as the foe and goes on to warn the reader that “Satan our foe is not to be taken with levity.”

The author notes that barraging us with an intention to get us to fall into sin, disobedience, immorality, transgression and iniquity is one of the strategies of Satan, in a bid to harm, indwell or fall us from glory.

Warning that “sin is evil or immoral acts, words and deeds; it is the act of violating God’s will and a transgression of God’s moral law… an offence against the standard of God, Pastor Hizkiah likened these shortcomings to the actions of little foxes that come into the vineyard when the grapes are developed and juicy to destroy the fruits.

Forewarning that battles are inevitable, Pastor Hizkiah reminds the reader that “the world’s solution is superficial, shallow and short-lived; but our God’s weapons annihilate the weapons of the evil one. The Lord is battle ready. He is raising a war cry but with victory assured [because] Jesus is set to fit us with all the spiritual equipment needed to fight and win…”

He noted that weapons of our warfare are divinely potent; custom-made to pull down all that oppose Christ in us. These, he said, include depression, oppression, repression, discouragements, bad health, financial problems, social pressures, sexual pressures and family problems, among others.

He reveals that “strongholds are any evil thought (in our minds) that are contrary or opposed to the objectives of Jesus Christ and bring with them deadly sins.”

He identified three kinds of sins which are the “heart” sins, utterance or “speech” sins and “mannerism” sins.

Other issues discussed in Weapons of our Warfare are renewing our minds, war is inevitable, lifestyle of a warrior, different types of warfare weapons, helmet of salvation, sword of the spirit, shield of faith, belt of truth, feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace, praying always with all prayers, keep standing on the word and crushing Satan under our feet.

Arsenal craves fresh vigor for United trip

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, is concerned that his flying team may lose some of their intensity as their “big month” continues with a trip to Old Trafford on Sunday (1610 GMT). The Premier League leaders face champions Manchester United hot on the heels of beating Liverpool 2-0 at the Emirates, and overcoming Borussia Dortmund 1-0 away in the Champions League, with midfielder Aaron Ramsey especially on fire. Arsenal’s victory over Liverpool last weekend put them five points clear at the top for their biggest lead since February 2008. The Gunners have lost only once in the league this season, a 3-1 opening day home defeat by Aston Villa. “We passed (the test against Liverpool) in a convincing way,” Wenger told Arsenal Players. “The focus of the team and the togetherness you could feel from the outside, they refused to lose this game and you could feel that from the start. “You could not have predicted that after the first game (Villa) so let’s enjoy it, take a lot of encouragement from it and continue to develop as a team,” Wenger added. “And as well be cautious and be on our toes, because we changed it in an emphatic way, so let’s make sure we continue to grow and not think ‘OK let’s have a little breather’.” The tables have turned since a beleaguered Arsenal were humiliated 8-2 by United, which included a Wayne Rooney hat-trick in August 2011, in a low point for Wenger. Arsenal, who have not won silverware since 2005, are now eight points ahead of a United side still adapting to manager David Moyes’ methods, following Alex Ferguson’s retirement. “At the moment, with 10 games played, you can say 25 per cent of the season (has gone). You see, the first tendencies and trends but it’s still not settled,” Wenger said. “By the end of November, you will have a clearer idea.” (Reuters/NAN)

john Ogu Declares: I want to play for Arsenal

Super Eagles attacking midfielder John Ogu has revealed to SportingLife that his sights are on a dream move to Arsenal FC in the English Premier League (EPL).

According to him, The Gunners are a club he has loved from his youth. Ogu said: “It is my dream to play in the EPL, and God willing that may be possible in my next move.

“Though I still have a contract with my present club Academica de Coimbra in Portugal, which will run till next year, after that I will be thinking of a possible move. I have my contact men working for me, and any time something concrete comes, they will let me know.

“I love my present club because they have been very good to me, but that will not stop me from making a move when an offer comes, especially in the EPL.”

He said that although it is relatively easy playing abroad, the need to overshadow the home players, continued to be a motivating force.

Born in Lagos on April 20, 1988, Ogu began his career with Starlet FC, Lagos, and in 2005 he joined Fly Sport Academic. On 23 September 2006 he left Fly Sport Academic and signed for Slovenian First League club NK Drava Ptuj where he played for four seasons.

In summer 2010, he moved to Atlético Clube de Portugal playing in Portuguese third tier, but after 6 months he moved to neighbouring Spain, joining UD Almería B.

He moved back to Portugal in November 2011 to join Portuguese side U.D. Leiria. After U.D. Leiria’s relegation from the top flight, Ogu moved to Académica de Coimbra in July 2012 on a free transfer.
