Arsenal’s Madueke out for six to eight weeks

Arsenal expect Noni Madueke to miss six to eight weeks with the knee injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

However, the 23-year-old England winger is not believed to have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The summer signing from Chelsea was substituted at half-time of the Premier League match with City and has been having tests to discover the severity of the problem.

“It looks like Noni is going to be out for a few weeks, but we don’t really know yet, we will have to scan him next week again,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Tuesday.

“He felt something at the beginning of the match and tried to carry on but it was too sore, so let’s see.”

Asked to confirm whether Madueke will be out for weeks rather than months, Arteta replied: “We hope so. Like I said, we need to scan him again to see the extent of the injury but it doesn’t look too bad.”

Arsenal face Port Vale in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Earlier, sources indicated medics were waiting for the swelling to subside before making a definitive diagnosis on the injury, but it is understood that Madueke will be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks, though that timescale is thought to be the best-case scenario.

The news is a major blow to Arteta and England head coach Thomas Tuchel given Madueke’s promising start to the season.

If the initial prognosis is confirmed, Madueke will not return to action until November at the earliest, ruling him out of a clutch of key domestic and European games for the Gunners.

The attacker is set to miss England’s forthcoming games against Wales and Latvia, while also making him a doubt for World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania in mid-November.

Arsenal face Sunderland on 8 November in the Premier League. If Madueke is unavailable for that game and the international break, he could return for the north London derby versus Tottenham on 23 November.

Ex-Arsenal star Thomas Partey denies alleged rape charges

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has denied raping two women and sexually assaulting a third woman.

The Ghanaian midfielder pleaded not guilty to five counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court.

The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when the 32-year-old regularly played in the Premier League. He was charged four days after leaving the north London club, following the expiration of his contract at the end of June.

Mr Partey was granted bail until his trial, which is due to start at the same court on 2 November next year.

He spoke to confirm his name before pleading not guilty to each of the charges made against him.

The midfielder, who now plays for Spanish side Villareal, was already in England as his new team played Spurs in the Champions League on Tuesday. He came on as a substitute in what turned out to be a 1-0 loss for his team.

The conditions of his bail do not prevent Mr Partey from playing football, but he must notify police of any international travel 24 hours in advance and must not contact the complainants.

  • Arsenal’s ‘scary show of strength’ as Madueke shines

Arsenal’s ‘scary show of strength’ as Madueke shines

Arsenal came into this season on the back of a busy summer transfer window where they spent around £250m and brought in eight players to propel another push for the Premier League title.

As they swept aside Nottingham Forest 3-0 with five of those new signings starting, the Gunners showed why such aggressive recruitment was justified.

Mikel Arteta’s side were without key trio Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and William Saliba through injury, while skipper Martin Odegaard limped off in only the 18th minute.

But it mattered little as Arsenal showed their strength in depth to cruise to an impressive success.

Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi were their statement signings and likely to start regardless of the opposition.

But with Declan Rice named as a substitute, manager Arteta has ripped up his tier system for this campaign, where he had a number of players who were guaranteed starters and expected to play most of the games.

And despite their injury troubles, Arsenal have won three of their first four league games and are yet to concede a goal from open play.

EPL: Arsenal see off Forest at home

Martin Zubimendi scored his first Arsenal goals as the Gunners comfortably beat Nottingham Forest to give Ange Postecoglou a defeat in his first game in charge.

Former Tottenham manager Postecoglou had not beaten Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in the previous four matches they had faced each other in, with three losses and one draw.

That record did not seem likely to change as, although Forest showed promise in some of their play, Arsenal took charge of the match.

Arsenal’s Noni Madueke, again starting on the right in place of the injured Bukayo Saka, was impressive as he seemed able to beat Morato every time he had the ball, while his inswinging corners caused problems for the Forest defence.

It was from one of these corners that Arsenal took the lead. Chris Wood headed one of Madueke’s deliveries to the edge of the box and Zubimendi hit a powerful volley past Matz Sels with a slight deflection from Murillo.

Morgan Gibbs-White had the best chance for Forest when he shot wide from inside the penalty area following a counter-attack.

The Gunners doubled their lead one minute into the second half when Eberechi Eze, making his first start for Arsenal, teed up Viktor Gyokeres to tap in from close range.

Zubimendi then added his second with a header when he got on the end of substitute Leandro Trossard’s cross.

Arteta will be delighted with the performance his side put in, with a number of key players out injured and captain Martin Odegaard having to be replaced with what looked like a shoulder injury in the first half.

Anfield Showdown: Arsenal seek to land early blow on fragile Liverpool

Late summer blockbuster, early title skirmish, clash of the big spenders — call it what you will but Sunday’s showdown between Premier League champions Liverpool and Arsenal could shape the narrative for the long months ahead.

Autumn is still a way off and both sides will have 35 games more to play after the dust settles at Anfield but the chance to land an early psychological upper-cut on a main title rival will be forefront in the minds of Arne Slot and Mikel Arteta.

Both sides have taken maximum points from their opening two games but the manner in which they have achieved that makes Sunday’s meeting all the more intriguing.

Liverpool have banged in seven goals in two games but their new recruits have had mixed starts and defensively they have looked unusually vulnerable with four goals conceded.

Hugo Ekitike has hit the ground running, scoring in the wins against Bournemouth and Monday’s rip-roaring and rather fortuitous 3-2 victory at Newcastle United.

But 116 million pounds ($157 million) signing Florian Wirtz is still adjusting to the sheer pace and physicality of England’s top flight while new left back Milos Kerkez has struggled.

In contrast Arsenal have been water-tight at the back, enjoying two clean sheets and their new-look forward line spearheaded by Viktor Gyokeres sparked into life in the 5-0 thrashing of Leeds United last week.

Arsenal’s lack of heavy-metal firepower has been identified as the reason they have finished second in a succession of two-horse Premier League title races and a fair chunk of the 250 million pounds invested in the summer has been to address that.

The capture of Sweden international Gyokeres, together with last week’s audacious swoop for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze have given manager Arteta a plethora of attacking options.

So much so that injuries to Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard, which would normally be met with doom and gloom, do not feel as damaging, even ahead of a trip to Anfield where Liverpool have not lost a league game for almost a year.

Gyokores, the true ‘number nine’ that Arsenal fans have been calling for, scored a brace in the win against Leeds and will be out to make a statement against a Liverpool defence that looked fragile against 10-man Newcastle.

“He’s that old-fashioned striker, the way he runs,” former Manchester United captain and Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane said when running the rule over the former Sporting player who cost Arsenal an initial 55 million pounds.

“It’s not pretty to look at. But come the end of the season, I bet you’re going, he’s got us 20 goals.”

Both league games between the sides ended in 2-2 draws last season — the first one at The Emirates in October when Arsenal twice led and the second in May when Arsenal’s players gave the title winners a guard of honour at Anfield.

That will have stung Arsenal’s squad and while the season is still in its infancy, getting ahead early in the title race could be crucial to their hopes of finishing top for the first time for more than two decades.

Tottenham Hotspur, the only other side to win both their opening games, will seek to maintain their perfect start under new manager Thomas Frank at home to Bournemouth tomorrow

Manchester City, beaten 2-0 at home by Tottenham, travel to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday while Chelsea are up against local rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge tomorrow  .

The season is less than three weeks old but Manchester United’s plight is already an underlying theme.

Winless so far in the Premier League, they suffered a humiliating League Cup defeat at fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Wednesday and the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim to get a result at home to promoted Burnley tomorrow  is enormous.

  • Saka set to miss up to four weeks through injury

Saka set to miss up to four weeks through injury

Bukayo Saka is set to miss Arsenal’s game at Liverpool on Sunday as well as England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia next month.

The 23-year-old went off with a hamstring injury in Saturday’s home win against Leeds United and it is estimated the forward will be unavailable for up to four weeks.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is doubtful for the match at Anfield as a result of a shoulder injury suffered in the victory against Leeds.

Odegaard looked in pain as he was replaced in the first half of the 5-0 win and the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder is understood to have left Emirates Stadium with his shoulder in a sling.

The Norway playmaker has not yet been ruled out of the game against the Premier League champions and there is optimism at Arsenal that neither the 26-year-old or Saka will be long-term casualties.

There is particular relief regarding Saka, who missed three months of last season with a hamstring injury.

Arsenal have a much deeper pool of attacking talent this season though, having signed Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze this summer.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta also has Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman to mitigate the absences of Saka and Odegaard.

Arsenal rop EPL after thrashing Leeds 5-0

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres scored his first two Premier League goals, while defender Jurrien Timber also netted twice, as the Gunners cruised to a 5-0 victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The triumph was slightly overshadowed by injuries to captain Martin Ødegaard and winger Bukayo Saka.

Timber gave Arsenal the lead in the 34th minute with a superb glancing header from Declan Rice’s corner.

He then played in Saka for the England international to score in first-half stoppage time to send the home side into the break 2-0 up.

Since joining Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon in July for a reported £55 million, Sweden international Viktor Gyökeres finally got the goal he had long sought with a composed finish three minutes into the second half.

Defender Jurrien Timber then scored the fourth from another corner eight minutes later.

Teenage debutant Max Dowman earned a penalty, which Gyökeres calmly converted to complete the 5-0 rout.

Only the injuries to Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka slightly dampened what was otherwise an impressive home opener for Mikel Arteta’s side.

  • Arsenal ‘short of numbers’ after £123m spend – Arteta

Arsenal ‘short of numbers’ after £123m spend – Arteta

Mikel Arteta said Arsenal are “short on numbers” and are looking to “improve the depth and quality” of the squad.

The Gunners have been busy in the transfer market and have completed deals for Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke for a total of about £123.5m.

They are also still in negotiations for the 73.5m euros (£63.5m) transfer of Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres and working to bring in young defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia.

Arsenal had been hoping to finalise a deal for Sweden international Gyokeres and include him on their pre-season tour but a transfer has yet to be completed, although Arteta has not ruled out new signings joining them in Asia.

“I cannot comment on any player who is not part of our group yet. When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player, we will do that,” Arteta said when asked about the arrival of 27-year-old Gyokeres.

Asked whether there could be more new signings joining his 30-man squad while they are travelling, Arteta said: “There’s still a long time in the window and we are seeking still.

“In terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad. We are constantly looking in the market.

“Until that happens, [we] focus on the players we have – and I’m very pleased with what I have seen in the last 10-15 days.”

Arsenal are in Singapore for matches against AC Milan and Newcastle before they travel to Hong Kong for a game with rivals Tottenham.

Speaking in Singapore about his new signings ahead of Arsenal’s match against AC Milan on Wednesday, Arteta added: “It’s like shaking the tree again.

“New faces… they bring new excitement, new energy as well. We signed very important players as well. I think everybody feels that the heights have to go to different level and it’s what we are seeking.”

  • Arsenal  break record for Smith’s million-pound signing

Arsenal  break record for Smith’s million-pound signing

European champions Arsenal shattered the women’s transfer record by signing Canadian forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool, for a fee of one million pounds ($1.34 million) according to media reports, making the 20-year-old the first female player to break the seven-figure barrier.

Arsenal’s blockbuster move eclipses the previous record set by American defender Naomi Girma’s 900,000-pound transfer from San Diego Wave to Chelsea in January, although the 25-year-old had already broken the one million dollar mark.

The first player in men’s football to command a million-pound price tag was former England forward Trevor Francis when he moved from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forest in 1979.

“It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal,” Smith said in a statement.

The versatile Smith, who can operate as a striker or play on the wing, enjoyed a stellar debut season at Liverpool despite the club’s struggles.

Smith finished as Liverpool’s leading scorer across all competitions with nine goals to claim their player of the season award, even as Liverpool slumped to seventh in the Women’s Super League after a fourth-placed finish the previous campaign.

Arsenal are building on their Champions League triumph with ambitious recruitment having already bolstered their squad by re-signing Chloe Kelly from Manchester City as a free agent.

They also snapped up left back Taylor Hinds from Liverpool after her contract expired.

But securing Smith represents a statement of intent from Renee Slegers’s side, who finished as runners-up to Chelsea in the league.
