    Artistes croon for Akinwunmi Ambode

A couple of Nigerian artistes have lent their voices to the quest of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinwunmi Ambode, to become the next governor of Lagos State.

With two songs; Gbabe and Gbogbowa La Leko, the artistes, including Ice Prince, M.I, Olamide, Banky W, Yemi Alade and Dammy Krane, shore up support for the political campaign of the APC candidate.

The songs call on residents of Lagos State to turn out to support the candidacy of Ambode, whom they constantly refer to as Ambo. While Gbabe features Ice Prince, M.I, Olamide, Banky W, Yemi Alade and DammyKrane,  Gbogbowa La Leko was rendered solely by Yemi Alade.

Delivered strictly in Yoruba language, Gbogbowa La Leko brings the spirit of Lagos and Yemi Alade’s unique style to play. On the other hand, Gbabe represents a blend of the different genres of the artistes pooled in the song, largely defined by MI’s flawless rap.

“I believe in Lagos State, better tomorrow for me and you, I believe in Ambode, he can make this Lagos dream come true. Let’s move forward and no going back. Anybody no want make we dey on track, make dem relax. Ambode na him we want, make the others reverse,” are the lyrics of MI’s rap in the song.

  • Nigerian artistes who pulled their weight in 2014

Nigerian artistes who pulled their weight in 2014

As a pointer to the fact that Nigerian music artistes ruled their game and dominated the global music scene last year, the organisers of the prestigious Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards announced 10 nominees in its Best African Act, five of which were Nigerians.

Like every other industry, music in Nigeria is getting more competitive by the day and after all the dust has settled, it ends up as a win-some-lose-some situation. But by their very nature, artistes come and go and while some lived up to the expectations of their fans, others fell short by not a few points.

While some argue that receiving awards is not a confirmation of an artiste’s talent, one cannot deny the fact that it not only serves as an acknowledgement of success, it also recognises an artiste’s other qualities which include ability, struggle for excellence and reputation. Below are some of Nigeria’s biggest artistes who stood out among their peers in 2014.

DAVIDO: “I’m only 21 years old and I’m living my dream.” With those words Nigerian hip hop artiste, Davido received his Mtv Africa Music Awards (MAMA). Going by the number of sold out shows he embarked on in the European, African and American capital towns, attracting millions of spectators during his shows; it is safe to say that David Adeleke, aka Davido won the admiration of his fans last year.

His cache of awards last year brimmed over earning him, not just respect but also envy in some quarters.

Some of the awards received (which he says numbers 22) include; Best International Act Africa (BET); Best Male Artiste in West Africa, Artiste of the Year’ and Song of the Year (AFRIMA); Song of the Year and Artiste of the Year (Headies); Artist of the Year, Best Male (MAMA); Artiste of the Year, Song of the Year (HiphopTv Awards); African Artiste of the Year (Ghana Music Award) among numerous others.

To add to his achievements, his song, Aye ranks with Say Yes by the trio of Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and William, former Destiny Child, as the most viewed video on YouTube with more than 8 million views.

    Tiwa Savage

With the year almost marred by tales of a failed marriage that is barely a year old, Mavin’s First Lady Tiwa Savage also reaped a bountiful harvest of awards. She draws her strength on the fact that some of her biggest nominations were international awards. That includes MOBO which she eventually didn’t receive.

Like her counterpart, Davido, she took home the Best Female award at this year’s edition of MAMA. She also registered her presence at the Chanel O Music Video Award, clinching the Most Gifted Female at the ceremony.

She dedicated her MAMA award to her husband, stating; “I just want to thank God, fans, 323 Entertainment, my label, Mavin my producer and boss, Don Jazzy and finally, I want to say thank you to the most handsome and amazing husband in the whole wide world, TeeBillz who has put so much to make our story a success thank you and I love you very much.”

In her kitty also are the R&B Artiste of the Year and Female Artist of the year awards (Nigeria Entertainment Award) and Artiste of the Year Female Award (City People Awards) among others.

     Oritse Femi

By all standards, his hit-song, Double Wahala can be called the anthem of the year. Gigs were not complete without Oritse Femi’s presence, whether to entertain or just as a guest. This artiste can best be described as one of the wonders from the entertainment scene this year. Though he is yet to prove to his fans that his’ is a case of a one-hit-wonder, the artiste is still basking on the success and recognition the song, Double Wahala has and is still garnering him.

Among his list of awards this year are Best Music of the Year Award (City People Awards); Best Street-Hop Artiste (Hip-hop TV awards); Best Afrobeat Video (NMVA) as well as Hottest Song of the Year and Best Indigenous Artiste of the Year (NEA).

     Flavour

Gradually, as a highlife artiste, Flavour N’abania has come to establish himself as a darling of music lovers, especially since the release of the video of his wedding themed song, Ada Ada. To his credit, the artiste has been pulling his weight in the Nigerian music scene.

He was the biggest winner of this year’s edition of the Nigerian Music Video Awards carting home four categories; best Indigenous Concept, Best use of Costumes, Best Highlife Video and the overall, Video of the Year.

He also won the Best Video of the Year 2014- Flavour, the Best Traditional Artist 2014 at this year’s African Music Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) as well as the Best Live Act (MAMA) last year. These are among other awards he bagged in the course of the year.

    Kcee

His’ can best be described as a story of resilience. After going under, following the split of his group, Kcee Presh, Kingsley Okonkwo buoyed back to life last year with the song, Limpopo. Limpopo was a huge success but to prove that it was no fluke, he quickly followed it with other hits like Pull Over, Ogadinma among others.

His award pool this year shows that his stay in the music scene is far from over. With his song, Pull Over tying the Hottest Single of the Year category with Davido’s Aye at this year’s NEA, Kcee can be said to have had a good year. He also bagged the Song of the Year 2014 (AFRIMMA) and Hip Hop World Revelation (Hip Hop TV awards). Kcee also won the Most Gifted Duo for his song, Pull Over which features one of Nigeria’s best-selling artists, Wizkid.

  • ‘Give us permanent artistes’ village’

    ‘Give us permanent artistes’ village’

As the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Artists met at the Artistes’ Village, Iganmu, Lagos last week to deliberate on the way forward concerning the quit notice given to them by the Federal Government, Edozie Udeze takes a closer look at the issues involved and the stand of the artists

Last week, the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Artists held a press conference to state their own side of the story pertaining to the quit notice given to them to vacate the premises of the National Theatre, Lagos. The notice, which came from the presidency and was signed by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Edem Duke, stated in part, that some portions of the complex have been earmarked for new building projects that will form part of the Theatre environment.

However, artists have demonstrated that the purported arrangement is at variance with the idea of a total culture and art environment. They argued that it was improper for government to wake up one day and decided to mortgage the soul and conscience of the Theatre without due and proper consultation with artists and other core stakeholders in the sector. They wondered thus: “In 2011, at Eko Hotel, Lagos, the president himself met with us soliciting for our votes. There he also made so many promises to us on how to grow and develop the culture sector. Now, he wants to uproot us without our consent. Today, he sees us as nobody – people whose trade and profession do not matter. Is that proper?” the association asked in a statement.

Beyond the strong argument that a lot of people will be rendered jobless and hopeless in the new set-up, Biodun Olakun, a seasoned artist and a trustee of the Professional Guild of Nigerian Artists (GFA) said: “yes, even if government wants to make a move as serious as what we have here now, it should first of all dialogue with us the practitioners. More so, some of us have been inhabiting this environment for more than thirty years.”

In as much as Olakun is not opposed to laudable ideas to make the sector grow, he is indeed irked that most public office holders behave as if the country in their personal property. “You see, there is a Yoruba proverb that says, you can’t cut my hair without my consent. How can you understand my pressing needs without talking to me? Government has always said that people should be self-employed, self-empowered and that is what we have been doing. So, those of us who have found space to empower ourselves and even in the process alleviating the situation of other artists, thereby helping them to grow, should we just be dislocated like that?”

Olakun’s grouse, just like most other artists, is hinged on the fact that government policies most times are anti – people. “What will happen to thousands of students being sent here by their institutions to do their Industrial Training. All of us have extended responsibilities and obligations. Nigeria is for all of us. It is not anybody’s father’s estate. In the first place, what legacies are public office holders leaving behind? Now we complain that the nation is not making progress and the little we have achieved so far, they want to scuttle it,” Olakun wondered.

Uche, a photographer whose office is located at the Artiste’s Village within the same premises, posited thus: “Each time government comes here, they tell us that the Theatre is not working. Up till now the 1988 National Policy on Culture has not been implemented or made public. When you go to find out who ran the Theatre down, it is still government people. Now, we are afraid it is the same people who ran it down that will now buy up the spaces. After that, what will be the fate of the artiste? Government is not even making temporary or permanent arrangement to resettle us. And this is a sub-sector that contributes over N1 billion to national economy every year. Every year, artists from all over the world visit this place and they go to all the corners of the Theatre to commune with us. Since we all own this country together, we should all be part of the decision to make it work,” Uche said.

But in his own reaction, Steve Ogundele, the Secretary-General of National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) said: “First of all I am not making an official statement on this issue. Anyway, when you consider the level of development in this area now, especially with the presence of the rail terminal, government might be right in catching in on it to make the Theatre a better place. Be that as it may, as a practitioner, I am not against the place being turned into a haven of some sort. What I am particularly worried about is the sincerity of government. Is what they are going to do be for the benefit of our economy, our practice as artistes, and for the over all development of the people of Nigeria? I don’t really want to pre-empt government, but let them follow due process in this regard.”

What the coalition of artists is saying is that government has to be fair to all. If there has to be this sort of arrangement, the government should provide a permanent artistes’ village somewhere else. “There has to be a place for us while the development is going on. Or does government want to turn all of us into refuges and destitutes, people who have no home but live under the bridge. If that is what they plan to do, then we are set to reason it out with them that it will not work, it can’t be encouraged, not in the least.”

Government should reconsider its decision in such a way that these army of artistes with offices in and around the Theatre do not have reasons to feel out of place in their own land. Olakun’s last words surmises the general feeling of the people affected thus: “Government has to look inwards and when this development is over, where are they going to put us and while it is going on, where will they resettle us so that we can continue to practice our art?”

  • Artistes thrill at countdown festival

Along with the world’s top tourist destinations, Lagos State played host to a world class cross-over festival on new year’s eve. The bouquet of activities created by the Lagos State government to mark the Lagos Countdown 2012 came to a climax with a thrilling display of spectacular fireworks, laser beam and water projection as never seen before in the entire continent of Africa. This was complimented by rich musical performances by a long list of top Nigerian artistes which include Tu Face Idibia, Omawunmi, Darey, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, MI, Banky W, Skales, Burma Boy, Ice Prince, Brymo, Dr. Sid, DePrince, Durella, Davido, Inyanya, among others.

The event, in its maiden edition, turned out to be the largest musical concert of the year in terms of artiste performance and attendance. Over 100,000 people converged on the Eko Atlantic City on the year’s eve to welcome the new year in true Lagos style, while millions of people experienced the event via the mass media as well as the social media.

The Lagos Countdown was featured live on CNN along with other choice tourism and business locations such as Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York, thus elevating Lagos State’s tourism profile and projecting its potentials to the world. According to the organisers of the event, Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, LASAA, the strategic intent for hosting the Lagos Countdown was to put Lagos on the global tourism map in the league of cities as Sydney, New York, London, Paris, Los Angelis and other major destinations that will be commemorating the cross over into the year 2013 in spectacular ways.”

George Noah, the Managing Director, LASAA, while speaking with newsmen at the Eko Atlantic City, venue of the event, hinted that, “what the agency is doing on behalf of the state government is leveraging the proposition of Lagos as a premium destination for business and leisure.”   The Bar beach end of the Eko Atlantic City became a beehive of major commercial and leisure activities, thronged by thousands of domestic and foreign tourists who were entertained every evening by different artistes at the instance of some of the sponsors of the event who give away various mouth-watering freebees night after night.

The celebration officially began on Thursday 20th December 2012 as the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola officially “switched on” the Lagos Festival of Lights, heralding the holiday season. In his remark at the flag-off ceremony, the Governor said that the Lagos Countdown was conceived to create an end of year cross-over tradition that engages citizens of the state, tourists and investors throughout the end of year holiday season.
