  • Artistes are to blame for their woes, says Alex Usifo

Artistes are to blame for their woes, says Alex Usifo

As entertainers continue to seek bailout from the public whenever they are ill, their colleague and veteran actor, Alex Usifo, has described the act as shameful.

Usifo’s position is contrary to that of many who have made a case, especially for veteran artistes who have died in penury. Usifo noted that artistes’ wellbeing depends solely on the decisions they make in their glory days.

Speaking with The Nation, the actor likened the entertainer to a businessman who either knows or doesn’t know what to do with the resources at his disposal.

“A good businessman, even if he has N5, 000, will know what to do with it. Some of us are more excited about the show. We don’t remember the business. They are inseparable. I’m trying to say that if I don’t have enough money today, it is not the fault of the industry. It is not because I have not made money in the industry. I have made millions in the industry. That, I can also say concerning those who have such problems, because we have seen cases where somebody would tell you that he started small and then prospered. I think it actually depends on your vision and what you want to be,” he said.

However, to Usifo, it is not a crime to seek help in times of need. “If you want to judge people by their mistakes, you won’t help anybody. When somebody is dying, it is not the time to blame the person. You heal the person first. Let him get well then you can begin to say whatever you want to say. But if you say because it is irresponsible, you won’t help the person, then you are actually wicked. And since the person has also contributed his quota in terms of making people happy and in terms of the GDP of the country, I think his case should be looked into,” he said.

  • Artistes seek enforcement of piracy law

Artistes seek enforcement of piracy law

The Nigeria music performers and producers are appealing to government to help them enforce the law against film or music counterfeiting and piracy.

Speaking at the zone’s World Music Day Anniversary in Lagos, the chairman of Alimosho zone of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Mr. Omosebi Abiodun (aka Omoba), said piracy, apart from engendering financial incapacity on the members, is the biggest threat to the music and film industry and their practitioners.

According to Omosebi, many music practitioners and producers have run into huge debt after they had produced music/film with millions of Naira. The worst, he said, is that these works are pirated before even they are released from the studio. This, he said, has caused severe loss of revenue, not only for the creative artistes, but also for the government which loses revenue in form of tax.

Omosebi, appealed to government to assist the association by enforcing the law on piracy.

He also urged government to encourage professional musicians both morally and financially. This, he added, will be a boost for the up-and-coming artistes.

He urged government to empower the youth who are into music and film. This, he said, could be through granting them soft loans and building studios where they can produce their albums with minimum charges.

With the Nigerian music scene fast gaining more stride, a new addition, Aquila Records, has been added to the list of record labels in its kitty. The re-launch of the label, which took place at Oriental Hotel on Friday, June 12, witnessed the presence of bigwigs in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Introducing the new look label, CEO of the outfit, Shina Peller described it as the youngest of the Aquila Group family.

“After the existence of Club Quilox, we decided to invest more in the entertainment industry, especially to give the opportunity to young and talented Nigerians to showcase their talents. Of course I believe that we can actually make a difference and make an impact. As it is, we are unveiling this record label today, but it is not something that we can actually do on our own to make the change that we require for the Nigerian music industry,” he said.

According to Peller, Aquila Records label has set up a platform where any talented Nigerian can come forward and “we can be able to examine what the person has got and see how we can position the person for the industry. I believe that it is an exciting time for the industry as I have made up my mind to actually invest into it and I believe that we can actually make a change.”

Present at the launch of the label were its recording artistes, Cue Peller and Base One. Its lead artiste, Tillaman was unavoidably absent.

Following the launch of the label, guests were treated to a night of music and dancing at Club Quilox. Among guests who graced the occasion were Skuki, Skales, Jay JayOkocha, Wizkid and a host of others.

  • Artistes intensify anti-piracy war

Musicians and actors under the umbrella of Film and Video Producers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) have taken their war against piracy to the streets.

The group held a peace walk in Lagos against piracy last Saturday.

The walk began at Planet One Hotel at Maryland through Opebi Link Bridge and ended at the Lagos Television (LTV) in Ikeja.

Many actors, actresses, musicians and dancers frowned at piracy, which according to them, has deprived them of the fruits of their labour.

Some organisations and corporate bodies also came together to support the group. One of the groups, Oceanic Health Management Limited (OHML), a health care insurance company; screened participants for hypertension, diabetes and eye problem.

Head, Medical Operations, Dr. Emegha Emohare said his company is supporting the anti-piracy war because artistes are being denied their due.

Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) President Pretty Okafor said his organisation is committed to fighting piracy, adding: “We don’t get value for our money. We put in so much time, energy and money just to get little or no profit in return.”

Nigeria Inter–Bank Settlement System  (NIBSS) Managing Director Adebisi Shonubi said: “This marks the beginning of change for the media industry. This walk is to sensitise people that piracy is real and that they should not encourage the entertainers. Piracy kills artists and so it should be discouraged.”

Nollywood star Emeka Ike, who is also the President of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), said the industry needs to fight this rot. “The time is up for piracy,” he added.

A representative of the National Association of Nigerian Deejays (NAND), DJ Mix, said: “I beg Nigerians to condemn piracy and say no to it.”

A member of Marketers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mr Emeka Samuel Aduah said: “We are here to tell the world about piracy and tell them that it is real and we all must kick against it.”

  • Artistes are special in different ways, says Reminisce

Artistes are special in different ways, says Reminisce

REMINISCE, who is often compared with Olamide, has urged fans to desist from making such comparing which seems like putting both artistes in competition. He said there is no competition between them, as each singer is unique in his style of music.

Both singers were discovered by ID Cabasa alongside Abolore Akande, aka 9ice.

“Olamide is younger than I am in the music industry. We were together when he started with ID Cabassa. He has always been my brother and the comparison is a good thing. We are both successful and that is what matters. There is Christian Ronaldo and there is Messi, people would always argue about who the best is based on certain criteria. It’s the same with us. The most important thing is that they are both successful.”

According to reports, his third studio album, Baba Hafusa, has debuted at #12 on the Billboard World Music Albums Chart. Having received massive critical acclaim, the album which is selling out fast both online and offline made it to the prestigious music chart this past week.

The album which was released on April 30, remained on the number one spot on the iTunes World Music chart for seven days straight, prompting fans, critics, and music aficionados to label.

With the success of the album, the indigenous rapper will embark on a tour to the United States this June, in order to promote the album.

Reminisce was given the chance to record his first studio song in 2006 and recorded a hardcore rap album at Coded Tunes, but the album was not released, which made him go back to school.

In 2008, Reminisce returned to the music scene, performing a rap verse on a track titled Bachelor’s Life off 9ice’s sophomore album titled Gongo Aso. His first single, Ever since, featured 9ice, and was a story about his life till that moment. Since his comeback, he has tried to remain relevant.

  • Omotola leads artistes in fight against poverty

Omotola leads artistes in fight against poverty

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, together with fellow entertainers, Waje and Yemi Alade have teamed up to create a brand new song titled Strong Girl, a rally meant to empower girls and women everywhere.

According to information, nine artists from seven African countries came together in South Africa earlier this month to write and record the track. They were joined by superstar actress and activist, Omotola, who stars in the Strong Girl video. The women are calling for action because “poverty is sexist, and we won’t end it unless world leaders act now to help girls and women reach their full potential.”

The track and video was released on May 13, 2015 along with a global day of action amplifying the songs message and recruiting thousands worldwide to the fight for justice.

This year, new global goals to end poverty will be set by world leaders. To be truly transformative, the goals must focus on the countries and the people that are worst off, and that includes girls and women. Evidence shows that investing in girls and women helps their families, communities and whole economies too.

Speaking about the campaign, Omotola said; “I am fortunate to be a young woman living her dreams and a trailblazer of my generation but I also recognise that many women and girls are not so fortunate. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the injustice of poverty and inequality. But when we invest in women and girls, we increase and accelerate the chances of overcoming extreme poverty.”

Their call-to-action is already backed by more 36 of the world’s most powerful women, including Beyoncé, Meryl Streep, Lady Gaga, Angelique Kidjo and other leading women from the worlds of business, arts, politics and activism.
