    Aspirants disrupt APC primary

The Chairman of the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly Primary Election, Mary Ekpere, has said the attempt by supporters of two senatorial aspirants to disrupt the party exercise was an act of sabotage.

She said the conduct of the two aspirants, who could not control their supporters was condemnable, stressing that it was aimed at undermining the success of the party in the next year’s election.

She said: “The action of Tony Adeniyi and Remi Olorunleke were condemnable. The entreaties not to frustrate the process fell on deaf ears. They were adamant to frustrate the party’s chances.”

She added that the aspirants sought for the abortion of the electoral process, noting that 47 wards had already cast their votes when they demanded that votes should be burnt.

According to her, it was only  Ayoleke Adu, one of the aspirants, that wanted the process to be concluded, stressing that the aspirant prevented the ballot papers from being destroyed.

She added that the APC was a law-abiding party, noting that the electoral committee would give a detailed report to the party’s National Working Committee on the development.

PDP governorship aspirants protest in Kebbi

Eight out of the 13 governorship aspirants in Kebbi State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have petition the national headquarters of the party, disassociating themselves from the recent primary held in Birnin-Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.

In a two-page communiqué signed by the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Aliyu and six others, issued, made available to The Nation, they said the process that led to the election did not conform to the guidelines of the party. Therefore, they called for a cancellation of the election and the organization of a fresh one as soon as possible.

The petitioners argued that there was no screening and accreditation before the commencement of the primary, as stipulated in the PDP guidelines.

They also stated that the delegates’ register provided by the national headquarters of the party in Abuja is not in sync with the one used for the conduct of the election.

Voters were intimidated and coerced into voting for the candidate anointed by the government, while a parallel congress was conducted at the Race Course with only one aspirant in attendance.

The aspirants also noted with dismay that the primary election, which was attended by the State Governor Saidu Dakingari, the Minister of Special duties Kabiru Tanimu and the Electoral Committee Chairman Celestine Omehia was marred by substantial irregularities.

Ex governorship aspirants enjoined to support Ambode

Aspirants who lost the Lagos State governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Akinwunmi Ambode in last week’s primaries have been enjoined to close ranks and support him as the party’s standard-bearer in the forthcoming election.

A public affairs analyst and entrepreneur, Mr. Adeniyi Adekunle, made this appeal at an event in Lagos while commenting on the significance of next year’s general election. He urged the close to a dozen other aspirants that lost to Ambode to give him their full support to enable the party to face the election as a formidable and united platform.

Adekunle described Ambode’s opponents during the contest as gallant men who have distinguished themselves in the nation’s public life, especially in Lagos State. He said: “In every contest, there must be losers and winners; that is inevitable. Now that Ambode has emerged as the winner, I want to appeal to his opponents to put whatever transpired behind them and work with the flag bearer to ensure victory for the party at the polls.”

Adekunle, who is also the Chief Executive Officer, Samad Group of Companies, said his appeal was borne out of a desire to see the APC triumph in next year’s election and consolidate on the good works of the incumbent administration led by Governor Babatunde Fashola.

He added: “I’m apolitical. I’m not a politician, but we are all political animals. As a political analyst who has been monitoring events in Lagos in the last 16 years, I’m of the view that the state benefitted immensely from the vision and dynamism of both former Governor Bola Tinubu and the incumbent Governor Fashola. I’ve known Ambode as a hardworking and brilliant technocrat over the years. With his wealth of experience, I’m sure that Lagos State will be better for it, if he is endorsed by the electorates.

The public affairs analyst and entrepreneur said Ambode has started well by extending hands of fellowship to all the aspirants who participated in the contest. His words: “Ambode has done well by saying that his victory is for all of them and that there is no victor and no vanquished at the end of the day. That is a hallmark of a good leader.”

    •Oppose automatic tickets for senators

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspiring for senatorial tickets in Bayelsa State have called for fair and credible primaries.

Some of the aspirants warned the party against giving automatic tickets to serving senators.

Irked by the recent decision of the national leadership of the party and President Goodluck Jonathan to pacify many of the senators with automatic tickets, the aspirants said the move would lead to protest votes against the PDP.

Some of the angry aspirants, who spoke in Yenagoa, the state capital on condition of anonymity,  said the decision should immediately be reversed in the interest of justice and democratic principles.

They  described the plan to give automatic tickets to the senators as the highest level of deception by the party, which collected their hard-earned money in exchange for forms.

Stressing that the decision would spell doom for the party, the aspirants described most of the senators clamouring for automatic tickets as  electoral liabilities.

They challenged the senators, whom they said had failed their constituencies, to a fair primary elections and vowed to defeat them.

The Coordinating Secretary, Southsouth Peoples Assembly and a leader of the PDP in the state, Dr. Ayakeme Whiskey, described the decision as undemocratic.

Whiskey, who is aspiring for the ticket of the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, said the decision was a contradiction to the principles of democracy, which allow the people to choose their leaders freely.

He said the PDP, by the decision would only succeed in narrowing the political space and presenting misfits to the electorate in the general elections.

He recalled that, in 1999, the PDP lost the Bayelsa West senatorial seat to the Action for Democracy (AD) because of the decision of  party leaders to present an unpopular candidate.

“Therefore, the decision to give half of the seats to serving senators, whether they have performed creditably well or otherwise, will lead the party to many problems.

“The elections do not end in the party. Flagbearers of the party will certainly face the best from other parties and, where a party decided to impose a non-performing candidate on them, there could be protest votes”, he said.

He said the move by some of the senators to hide under the party for tickes was a demonstration of their unpopularity and lack of performance.

Whiskey said: “It is my conceived belief that where party members are not given the right to choose their representatives in the manner at which they want it, you are invariably alianating the people from governance.

“It is particularly painful that some of those senators who are clamouring for third term tickets may not win the elections in their own senatorial constituencies for reasons of non-performance.

“The concept of representative democracy is that where a representative has served well, the people will naturally volunteer their mandate for the person to go back.

“Tickets to return should not be seen to be automatic. It should be a product of effective representation. It should be a product of the people being satisfied with the services rendered by the elected representatives.

Besides, Whiskey said the desicion by the party meant injustice to the aspirants who had spent their money to acquire forms.

He said: “The decision should be reviewed. It is an injustice to aspirants who have submitted themselves to provide effective representation to their people.

“Most of us have committed our money and have been doing underground work to actualise our aspiration. I call on the leadership of the party to review the decision, otherwise, we will feel the party has done injustice to us and we will protest it. The decision is undemocratic and should be stopped.

“I have been reaching out. If a serving senator feels that he is very popular, he should do the same and let the people return him. My prayer is that for the interest of the party, this decision should be reviewed. Justice must not be seen to be selective. Some of these senators could become electoral liabilities to the party.”

  • Ondo APC to ensure level-play ground for aspirants

Ondo APC to ensure level-play ground for aspirants

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has reiterated its committment to a level-play ground for aspirants into political offices.

Its Chairman, Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke, made the pledge while presenting the expression of interest and nomination forms to a senatorial aspirant for Ondo South District, Mr Morayo Lebi, at the party secretariat in Akure, the state capital.

He said the party would conduct transparent primaries devoid of rancour.

Reiterating his determination to conduct peaceful primaries, he said: ”I have no candidates, likewise all members of my executive committee”.

Kekemeke said that the party has enlarged it coast and become the toast of the people.

He said market women, artisans, road transport workers, and other groups are embracing the party on daily basis.

The party leader congratulated APC members for the new development, stressing it was “divinely orchestrated”.

The former Secretary Government (SSG) however, urged aspirants and supporters to ensure rancour-free primaries.

He said: “Any party man who engages in friction before, during and after the party’s primaries in the state would be sanctioned.

“Aspirants should conduct their campaigns in a civil manner like one family. Anybody who emerges after the exercise will become the party’s candidate. We are looking for community-focused candidates.”

Kekemeke urged party members to win for souls for the party.

He said: “We want to teach the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) the rudiments of political party administration.”

Kekemeke commended Lebi for supporting the party morally and financially, noting that his contributions would further empower the chapter.

Lebi, who spoke after receiving his forms from Kekemeke, promised to attract developmental projects to Ondo South District.

  • Jonathan to subject aspirants to test

Jonathan to subject aspirants to test

President Goodluck Jonathan may have jettisoned the internal democracy of the Peoples Democartic Party (PDP), by directing that only the aspirants, who are loyal to him, should be supported to contest the 2015 general elections.

Aspirants are to undergo risk assessment and valuation, to determine their level of loyalty to the President.

The development was made known in a statement by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs in conjunction with the Nigerian Economic and Political Action Committee (NEPAC), which announced the commencement of risk assessment and candidate valuation for aspirants jostling for offices.

The assessment, tagged: ‘Presidential Support Base Programme’, would evaluate and shortlist aspirants on classified basis.

NEPAC Director-General Dr. Godson Nnaka, in the statement yesterday, noted that the assessment would ensure that only those proven to be loyal to Jonathan are supported to win elections.

“The objectives of this programme is to identify, evaluate and shortlist aspirants on classified basis, who, if supported, will maintain maximum loyalty and be part of a strong support base for President Jonathan beyond 2015,” he said.

  • 16 aggrieved Pdp governorship aspirants head to court

16 aggrieved Pdp governorship aspirants head to court

Sixteen aggrieved governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Rivers State, led by Lancelot Anyaya, are to seek redress in court on the ward congress of the party at the weekend.

Spokesman of the aggrieved aspirants, Mr Soalabo West, explained that “to be clear, there were no elections in the various wards in Rivers State, even though attempts were later made at some secret locations to stage-manage what was a Grassroots Democratic Initiative (GDI) ward congresses”.

West, who spoke last night in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said the sore points the aggrieved parties would table in court is that the five-man panel set up to conduct the ward congress did not show up at the party’s secretariat.

He also alleged that the team went to the home of  a former minister, where they were lavishly entertained and wrote the results and concocted reports on Friday night”.

According to him, the panel “surprisingly” returned to Abuja  same Saturday.

The spokesman said the aggrieved aspirants  would tell the court that no electoral material was distributed at the various venues.

He said this made party faithful to wait in vain.

West added that in some cases, like in Asari Toru Local Government Area, some aspirants were allegedly attacked by GDI supporters.

Listing the names of the five-man electoral panel and the Electoral Appeal Panel, which the national executive committee of the PDP set up for the state, West claimed that the people had personal relationships with former Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike.

The spokesman said it would amount to a waste of time if the aggrieved aspirants tabled their grievances at the PDP appeal panel.

West alleged that ward delegates, who bought forms for the exercise, were not allowed to return their forms at the PDP secretariat, despite  meeting the deadline to return the forms.

The spokesman said the aggrieved aspirants would also tell the court that there had been fundamental breaches of the PDP constitution and guidelines, adding that the party failed to follow its constitution and due process in line with the constitution of executive committees in wards and local governments.

One of the aspirants, Prince Tonye Princewill, faulted the exercise.

He urged the PDP’s national executives “to avoid anything that will distract Mr. President and resolve the Rivers State issue, before it gets out of hand”.

In a statement in Port Harcourt yesterday, Princewill said:  “The congress has already been done. The panel  has been settled and the electoral umpire has been compromised. All their planning was in vain. For them, the congress was just an opportunity for the masses to fight and destroy things. They do not care if Rivers people die, as long as they win. We do. We care; that’s why we steered clear.

“The Wike-led PDP exco, does not realise that we are several steps ahead of them; none of the key aspirants was involved in the congresses. That should be a signal for the party. Our silence will speak louder than our words. In the end, PDP will either sit up and address this sham or it will lose us and lose Rivers State. Nothing is impossible.”

  • Delta 2015: Aspirants kick against zoning

Delta 2015: Aspirants kick against zoning

Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants have kicked against zoning, saying that it is undemocratic.

The aspirants, including Chief Ovie Omo-Agege and Dr. Andrew Warri,  said they preferred primaries where the flag bearer will be democratically elected by delegates.

The aspirants, who spoke with reporters in Abuja, after picking their expression of interest and nomination forms at the PDP National Secratariat, said aspirants should be given equal opportunity to contest.

Omo-Agege, who is the former Secretary to Government under former Governor James Ibori, said there was never a time where Deltans agreed on zoning.

He said: “There was never anytime where it was agreed that there should be zoning in Delta state or stopping aspirants from all the three Senatorial Districts from contesting. Aspirants have always contested for the  governorship position irrespective of district.

“The contest for governor is essentially the exercise of executive powers and I can tell you today that there is no part of Delta state in what is today Delta state that has not at one time or the other exercised executive powers.

“Chief Denis Osadebe, who was a Premier of Mid-West/Bendel State, was from Asaba in today’s Delta State and he exercised Executive powers over what is today’s Delta State and even beyond. So, all the three senatorial districts in what is today’s Delta State have, at one time or the other, exercised executive power which is the essence of the governorship contest.”

He urged the party not to exclude anybody who wishes to contest.

“Everyone who is running should run, I do not seek exclusion for anybody, everybody should be allowed to run,  there should be a level playing field, we all should be allowed to go into the field and we hope that the best person will emerge.

Dr. Warri said  the zoning introduced by the PDP will not work, adding that politicians are adopting zoning because it is politically convenient for them.

He noted that zoning system was not adopted for the gubernatorial race in 2011.

He added: “Anybody from Delta North. Delta Central and  Delta South can become governor because there is no articulated zoning system in Delta now. They are singing the song of zoning now just for political convenience.

Omo-Agege said if elected in 2015, he would tackle the issue of incessant kidnapping by setting up Community Security Marshalls , create jobs, and provide  portable water.

Dr. Warri also  said, if elected as the governor, medical tourism will be a thing of the past because he will  make Delta state a reference point in terms of healthcare delivery.

  • Rochas and council election aspirants

Since the election of Governor Rochas Okorocha as the executive Governor of Imo state, I have refrained from joining those who pillory him for his eccentrics. Some others prefer to call it, his love for the mundane. Others will rather call him, a fake democrat. However, one wants to see it, one glaring attribute of Governor Okorocha is that he loves the world of theater. Well, that is no sin. Whether in the way he governs, with his so called fourth-tier of government or his audacious claims of unprecedented achievements in the state, which many of his critics insist exists only in the media. Even his loquaciousness and the many battles with his potential rivals for the 2015 gubernatorial elections, all speak of his character.

But one disturbing attribute of Governor Okorocha is his dishonorable treatment of the local government elections aspirants, since he became the executive governor of the state in 2011. On assuming power, he sacked the elected local government officials that he inherited from the former administration. His grouse was that the departing Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) led administration had arranged the election to foist their surrogates on his incoming administration. The jury is still out on the propriety of that action, with the many battles in court. However, as a counter to the sacking of the elected local government officials, Rochas initiated the process of conducting another local government election since 2012. And that is the crux of this piece. The fact is that those who embarked on that democratic journey, appears to have entered a vehicle which in the Nigeria local parlance, is called “one chance”.

The ‘one chance’ vehicle is usually manned by mean hearted miscreants who pretend to be normal transport operators, and who while on the excruciating journey to nowhere, rob and disposes the distrusting and unlucky passenger they pick on the road, of all his or her belongings, before shoving him or her out from the moving vehicle, to either death or permanent incapacity, before zooming off with the items stolen from the victims. In Imo State, Governor Rochas has since 2012 encouraged the local council election aspirants that an election would soon take place, with all the material and physical exertions that go with that prospect. To keep the aspirants hopeful and engaged, the governor has continuously and disingenuously encouraged the aspirants to engage in one meaningless and expensive gambit or tour of the communities or other form of trickery or another.

Now with just about five months to Governor Okorocha’s personal re-election battles, the aspirants who have spent all they have worked for in life, and who may have borrowed to satiate the insatiable pilots of this ‘one chance’ vehicle; may yet go for the last lurch, unless Rochas changes his mind to act honourable. Without knowing it, Rochas is creating an army of disposed political activists, and that is not good for his image and the state. For while many usually dismiss Governor Okorocha for his theatrics, I have always held hope that the man has his peculiar style. After all, before he became a governor in the current political dispensation, Rochas had already made his name as a philanthropist, even if he may be showy about that. So if as a governor, he makes a drama of every political opportunity, he is only behaving true to character.

But, while Governor Rochas may have other fellow comrades in other states, playing poker with democracy at the local government level, it appears Rochas has elevated his maltreatment of the aspirants to a new level. This is because Rochas the man of theater and constitutional absurdity, dose not see the incongruity of giving instruction to local council aspirants, to engage in expensive and time consuming community tours, as if they are state officials, under his command. Rochas also appears not to appreciate that most of the aspirants are completely distraught with the process, but are merely hanging on, having already been encouraged to go full throttle on several occasion, in the earnest believe that the elections where by the corner.

As a governor on the platform of a party that professes progressivism, the All Progressive Congress (APC), I encourage Governor Rochas to immediately take steps to redeem his image and that of the party by conducting the local council elections that has seen many turns and twists in his state in the past three years. I hope he knows that such a matter will be a campaign issue in his bid for reelection and also for other party aspirants to national offices, particularly the presidency. Unless he has other plans, Governor Okorocha should realise that if he doesn’t conduct the local council election before the next gubernatorial elections, the malcontent that he has mobilised at the local level, is enough to jeopardize his chances and that of his party candidates in the other elections.

Governor Rochas must also realize that the grassroots contestants, who have been mobilizing the local electorates in the past three years, can be persuaded to join his numerous detractors to derail his own ambitions. Indeed, as the foremost APC political office holder in the south-east zone, Rochas must begin to act as the rallying point for the party in the zone. To do this, Rochas must act in a manner to inspire confidence and exude leadership discipline. Thus his word must be his bond. He can not afford to be seen as untrustworthy. He must rally his followers and expand the frontiers of the party. He must not reduce his party interest to what will benefit Governor Rochas Okorocha and nothing else. Immediately conducting the local government election in consonance with the provisions of Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution is in the state’s best interest.
