Atiku recalled that he last saw Dimba Igwe in January this year, “while his demeanour was as lively as ever and full of bluster.”

The statement said further: “The demise of Dimba Igwe, who was a personal friend of mine will leave a huge hole in the spectrum of journalism profession in Nigeria.”

Turaki is of the view that 2015 is special and a potential turning point in Nigeria’s history – that we need to seize the moment, to give every Nigerian a chance to help redefine Nigeria as a place for them and their children to prosper and feel safe.

” He says a change is needed now, and he is ready to lead that change.” Shehu stated.

PDP’s misrule ‘ll end next year, says Odigie-Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, assured yesterday that the administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which started 15 years ago, would end next year.

He said the administration would be  replaced by that of the APC.

Odigie-Oyegun spoke at the Third Progressive Governance Lecture Series in Owerri, the Imo State capital, with the theme: “Dealing with the Challenge of Building a Physically-Healthy Nation through Preventive, Protective and Innovative Medicare”.

He said the nation could not survive another four years of PDP misrule.

The APC chief said his party would ensure that the change Nigerians desired was actualised in 2015, adding: “The tenure of the PDP at the centre must end next year. This is the mission before us. Our mission is simple. We must do everything legitimate to end PDP’s 15-year inept administration.”

Odigie-Oyegun noted that the nation’s problems were caused by “totally visionless and clueless leadership,” saying: “Nigeria ranks among the lowest in the world in all facets of modern society.”

The APC chairman said corruption had affected all sectors of the society.

His words: “Corruption has become the business of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration. This shows that the PDP government needs to be changed to save the country from impending collapse.

“But the good news is that all Nigerians need a change. They look on to us as the vehicle of change.”

The chairman of the event and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar advocated the devolution of power at the centre, to enable states drive development and check corruption.

He said the country runs a defective federalism structure, which he advised should be restructured to address the challenges. “The Federal Government should hand over the functions to the state governments and give them funds to develop the sectors.”

Atiku went on: “Federal Government has no business in agriculture, education and health sector as well as infrastructure development. These should be handed over to the state governments with the required funds for effective development.”

Highlighting the challenges in the health sector, the former vice president called for adequate investment in primary healthcare. Said he: “We need to identify the illnesses, which affect our people, identify the priority areas and tailor our health policies towards addressing them.”

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha said the health sector was a source of concern, despite efforts to improve it in some states.

Okorocha, who also chairs the APC Governors’ Forum, said the party believed that health cannot be ignored and improvements must be sought in the policy, strategy and management of healthcare to build a world-class and affordable healthcare for the citizens.

He said: “The health sector seems to be in a standstill. As it is, the three health-related Millennium Development Goals of reduction in infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate and the reocurrence of HIV, malaria and tuberculosis have not been met. In truth, a lot of the difficulties we face can be attributed to the dearth of preventive healthcare system.”

Okorocha said Nigeria’s healthcare sector, according to the statistics released by the United Nations’ Report on the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in 2013, stands at 187 of 191 countries, adding: “The report seems to insinuate that Nigeria is the only country clogging the wheels of the forward movement in the fight against the disease, towards a global target of reducing HIV infection by 50 per cent in 2015.”

He said the APC governors met to examine the state of the country’s health sector with regard to harvesting perspectives on preventive, protective and innovative healthcare delivery.

Those at the event include governors of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi; Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi; Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Others are Senators Chris Ngige and Magnus Abe.

In her paper presentation titled: “Nature, Scope and Dynamics of the Prevailing Crisis in Nigeria’s Health Sector; Examining the State of the Health Sector in Nigeria”, the guest lecturer, Prof. Ijeoma Okoye of the Department of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Chairperson, Association for Good Clinical Practice in Nigeria, said the health of a nation enhances its economic development and vice versa.

She said HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality, under-five mortality, malaria and tuberculosis, compounded by the non-communicable diseases, had undermined and impoverished many developing nations, such as Nigeria, adding: “The pursuit of better health should not await improved economy, rather measures to improve health will contribute to economic growth.”

    2015: Atiku to declare stand

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar may soon declare for next year’s presidential race, it was learnt yesterday.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain, it was also learnt, at the weekend made exhaustive consultations with stakeholders in Nigeria and abroad.

Our correspondent learnt that the former Vice-President’s bridge-building outreach has an all-encompassing road map to tackle most of the challenges facing the country – from security to unity, equity and socio-economic development.

A source said: “The former Vice-President and his newly formed team shall be interfacing with diverse religious and professionals bodies nationally and internationally. His mission would be to gauge the pulse of the people on the many troubles bedevilling the country with the aim of finding genuine and lasting solutions to them.”

Atiku, who is believed to be a strong advocate of interfaith dialogue to reduce tension in the land, may begin his campaign with messages of peaceful co-existence, true nationalism and an end to religious fanaticism and extremism, which breed rebellion and anarchy.

The source added: “Uppermost on the Turaki’s mind, this time round, is the need to foster a harmonious working relationship between Christians, Muslims and traditional believers to have all hands on deck to rebuild our fatherland, Nigeria.”

Atiku condemns arrests, clampdown on APC members

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday decried the clampdown on APC leaders and supporters in Osun State.

The APC leader called for neutrality and professionalism of security agents monitoring the election.

Atiku in a statement by his media office said reports from the state suggested random chase down and arrest of APC leaders and members across the state by soldiers and officials of the Department of State Security (DSS).

He said that the use of the military for the purpose of election is “an anathema to the very spirit of electioneering politics, because the rules of engagement of the military violates the principles of fundamental human rights which gives the people the power of franchise.”

He therefore called on the relevant authorities behind the deployment of troops for the governorship election in Osun State to give instructions to the soldiers and state security agents on the imperative of limited and minimal engagement associated with the nature of their assignment, as the mood of terror being reported to have been created in the state is capable of distorting the expected free and fair outcome of the election.

  • APC’ll win Adamawa governorship poll

    •‘Al-Makura’s clearance vindicates APC’

Despite the recent impeachment of former Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako, a former vice-president and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, has said the party will win the forthcoming governorship election.

He also said APC would ensure an open and fair contest among its members vying for the party’s ticket.

Atiku addressed reporters yesterday on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

A statement by Media Unit of the Atiku Campaign Organisation quoted the former vice-president as saying: “APC is the party to beat in Adamawa State. All the contenders for the party’s ticket are my close political associates. Therefore, it is imperative for me to ensure a high sense of neutrality in this situation and allow the followership of the party take a decision on who should be their candidate.

“It is important APC makes the Adamawa election a case study in political transparency through effective application of the party’s internal democracy mechanism before, during and post-election periods.

“The governorship election is very crucial to the electioneering future and fortune of Nigeria’s politics.

“This is the more reason the APC wants to rebuild the country’s equitably, fairly and justly. I have always been an advocate of internal democracy in political party system; now is the time to practise what we preach.

“Only a level-playing field can sustain and maintain unity, security and prosperity for all and sundry.”

The former vice-president noted that the culture of imposing candidates on a party was no longer fashionable.

Atiku added: “The culture of imposition of candidates and its concomitant impunity is now old fashioned and unacceptable in our democracy.

“You may recall that I have been in the vanguard of safeguarding true democracy by challenging obstacles to justice and fair play. I even went to court severally to protect our hard-won political freedom.

“I will continue to lead with others in the race to unseat this inept and incompetent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) maladministration, which has thrown Nigerians into an era of depression, frustration and desperation.”

On the dismissal of the impeachment plot against Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura by the panel constituted by the Chief Judge, Atiku said this was “a real life vindication of the APC as a party of the people that creates and cherishes good governance”.

He added: “The era where a political super power would arbitrarily use impeachment as a mechanism to get rid of political opposition is over.”

    Atiku urges prayers for unity

FORMER Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has appealed to Muslims in the country to pray for an end to the spectre of insecurity currently plaguing the land.

In an Eid-el-Fitr message marking the end of the 30-day-long Ramadan fasting period, Atiku regretted that the terrorists have shed so much blood in the name of religion and urged Muslims in the country to pray to God to defeat and destroy evil doers masquerading behind religion.

He said the dark agenda of the terrorists defies any clearly defensible goals, adding that their activities contradict all the tenets of the Islamic religion, particularly the injunctions on the sanctity of life.

Atiku advised Muslims to join hands with other Nigerians of goodwill to defeat the terrorists’ agenda of trying to provoke sectarian crisis by attacking places of worship.

He said the terrorists spare neither Muslims nor Christians and that Nigerians must be united against them.

Atiku cautioned Nigerians against playing into the hands of terrorists by helping them to achieve their agenda of seeking to divide and dismember the country by causing deliberate provocations.

On the current security challenges, the former Vice President said the security operatives should be ahead of the terrorists by nipping their plots in the bud.

He enjoined Nigerians to assist the security agencies by being vigilant and furnishing them with information that could enhance their efficiency in dealing decisively with insurgency and other criminal activities ravaging the country.

Atiku also urged political leaders to urgently deal with the hardship being experienced by the ordinary people in the country.

He stated that the worsening level of poverty and unemployment feeds criminal tendencies and has become an embarrassment that needs to be redressed.

Lukman was Nigeria’s best oil minister, says Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said Dr. Rilwan Lukman, who died on Sunday night, was Nigeria’s best Oil minister.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his media office, Atiku said: “I will describe (the late Dr Rilwan) Lukman as the best oil minister we ever had, given his unmatched knowledge of the industry and the integrity with which he ran the ministry.”

The former vice-president recalled that Lukman’s contribution to the management of the nation’s Oil and Gas sector provided the impetus for his elevation as the Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The Turaki Adamawa described Lukman’s death as a monumental loss.

He prayed Allah to grant his family and the nation the fortitude to bear the loss.

  • Governors, Saraki Atiku, Balarabe condemned Nyako impeachment

Governors, Saraki Atiku, Balarabe condemned Nyako impeachment

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum and eminent Nigerians condemned yesterday the impeachment of Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako.

NGF chairman Chibuike Amaechi, the Rivers State governor, described the act as “a sad day for democracy in the country.”

The APC governors speaking through its chairman Rochas Okorocha, said the action “is bad politics of intimidation aimed at stifling the opposition. “

He added that it could have a negative effect on the country’s fight against democracy.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Bukola Saraki and second Republic Governor Balarabe Musa, also condemned the removal of the governor.

Amaechi urged Rivers people and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain calm, saying by God’s grace, he would hand over to his successor on May 29 next year.

The Rivers governor, who spoke through Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, asked the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike; the Rivers Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, and the six “desperate” lawmakers to give peace a chance in Rivers State and bear in mind that power belongs to God. He urged them to stop their “rascality” forthwith.

Semenitari said: “The Rivers State Government is assuring the people of the state that the enemies of progress will fail and all the persons plotting to impeach Governor Amaechi and their paymasters in Abuja will be disappointed, because God remains the Almighty.

“We wish to appeal to all well-meaning people in Nigeria and around the world to please call the PDP leaders to order, before they truncate the nation’s democracy. They are becoming too desperate over 2015, forgetting God.

“It is now very obvious that the members of the PDP, especially the leaders of the drowning party, have no interest in the peace and stability of Rivers State. Their evil plan will never come to pass. They are afraid, because Rivers remains an APC state and the people of the state, who have not seen any Federal Government project, will chase them away in 2015.”

The Rivers information commissioner also stated that there would be no hiding place for the six pro-Wike lawmakers, in the 32-member Assembly, while insisting that emphasis must always be placed on the rule of law and due process.

Semenitari said: “Just on June 19, shortly after Governor Amaechi was held hostage in commando style by soldiers and the Federal Government’s security agents in Odudu, Ondo State, on his way to Ekiti State, where he was to join Governor Kayode Fayemi and other leaders of the APC, for the mega rally before the June 21 election, we informed Rivers people about the move to impeach Governor Amaechi earlier in the day. The six Rivers lawmakers and their sponsors are not relenting, not minding the illegality and unconstitutionality of their proposed action.

“We wish that the PDP-led Federal Government will address the spate of insecurity in Nigeria, especially the embarrassing Boko Haram menace and suicide bombings, with as much fervor and vigour as it has deployed in plotting against and witch-hunting its political opponents, at a time the over 200 innocent Chibok girls, kidnapped since April 15, are still in captivity.”

Okorocha, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, regretted that despite series of discussions and dialogue with members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly to have a rethink, they went ahead with the plot.

“ The impeachment won’t encourage other nations of the world willing to help us come out of our security problem to take us serious.  To say the least, the impeachment was not the best of actions this time”,  the statement said.

The Imo Governor added that “What the nation needs most this time should be ideas, unity of purpose and patriotism to deal decisively with the lingering security problems threatening our nationhood and not actions that would further inject bad blood among the leaders of this country and the citizenry in general.

“The impeachment of the Adamawa State Governor and similar impeachment threats against the governors of Nasarawa, Edo, Rivers and so on, could be explained as bad politics of intimidation aimed at stifling the APC as a party and threatening our nascent democracy.  The impeachment has no iota of value to add to the nation’s growth and development, and even to the progress of Adamawa State”, he said.

Atiku Abubakar warned against the excessive use of power by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government, a tendency, which he said, was not good for decent democratic practice.

In a statement by his media office in Abuja, Atiku said wielding the axe of impeachment against elected public office holders to settle scores by the PDP-led Federal Government would needlessly build up tension in the country.

The former Vice President said the reckless use of impeachment to settle scores could not have been the intention of the framers of the 1999 Constitution.

He said the frequency with which elective officials were being shot down by impeachment would destroy the whole purpose of inserting the impeachment clause in the Constitution.

He regretted that the use of impeachment to harass and humiliate perceived opponents by the PDP-led Federal Government would ultimately bastardise the spirit in which the constitution provides for the impeachment clause.

The former Vice President admonished the PDP-led Federal Government to take it easy in the way they use power, adding that the constitution was not meant to provide ammo to anybody to harass and humiliate opponents or force them out of office.

He deplored the use of financial inducements to influence the removal of perceived opponents from office. According to him, triumphalism in the suppression of opponents is a bad omen for democracy.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Environment, Senator Saraki, described the impeachment as unfortunate.

He said: “It is very unfortunate and I think we are seven months to the end of the tenure. We all need to look at the bigger picture, look at the stability of our democracy.

“After Adamawa, I think Nasarawa State governor is being served with impeachment notice and three other states are going to be served.

“The bigger issue in this country now is the issue of security, and poverty.  Some of the issues raised against the Adamawa State Governor can also apply anywhere and we need to be mature with our democracy.

“The issue of impeachment should not be our priority at this stage and those of us that love this country will really need to talk to ourselves and be more concerned with the insecurity  before us instead of dissipating our energy on issues that will divide us by overheating the polity and creating problems for ourselves.

“We should talk about how to improve security and ensure better living conditions of our people. Those who are beating the drums now should know that it will come back to them.”

Balarabe Musa described the impeachment of as a desperate act by the PDP

He said he was not surprised by the news of the impeachment, saying, he had observed that the PDP was desperate to reduce the All Progressive Congress (APC) to a loyal opposition party.

According to the elder statesman, who himself was impeached in the Second Republic: “I am not surprised because, the PDP is desperate to reduce the APC to a mere loyal opposition and they have found Adamawa as a soft spot, following the defection of House of Assembly members to PDP.

“Secondly, the fight among the elite of Adamawa State for power had made it very easy for the PDP to succeed in its plan,” he said.

The “PDP is mindless, insensitive and practising do or die politics, which is very dangerous for the development of Nigeria’s democracy.”

I have my doubts if due processes were followed.  I think the impeachment was not an act of the Adamawa State House of Assembly. It appears Governor Nyako is being punished for holding views considered subversive and against the powers that be.

“To remove a governor is not a small business. It is a serious constitutional duty that must be carried out in accordance with due processes and after affording the governor adequate time and opportunity to defend himself.

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) blamed President Goodluck Jonathan of playing ‘politics of dictatorship’ by hunting opposition governors.

It advised Dr. Jonathan to follow due process.

It said: “we wish to advise President Jonathan to always adhere to the rule of law and hard core democratic tenets; for we could notice signs of dictatorship creeping into the political landscape. For instance the Maiduguri airport which was closed to pilgrims because of Boko Haram was opened for the man who nurtured the monster, what an irony.”Yesterday, it was Governor Murtala Nyako, today Tanko Almakura, tomorrow another APC governor to be impeached, so no PDP governor is corrupt?”The statement was issued by the CNPP National Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu.
