  • Flood kills two in Akwa Ibom

Two persons have reportedly died following more than an hour of heavy downpour which caused flood in many streets in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.

The deceased persons, a man and woman were discovered in a gutter along Atiku Abubakar lane by GWT fuel station in Uyo, eyewitnesses said.

Our correspondent reported that the rain started at about 5.30pm on Sunday and did not stop until about 6.45pm.

According to an eyewitness, Uduak Mbakara, the unidentified victims who were found dead inside the gutter on Monday morning were not residents of the area.

She stated that residents of the area called the police who promptly responded and carried away the corpse.

“We woke up this morning to find the corpse of a man and a woman in the gutter along Atiku Abubakar lane. Since we could not identify them, we called the police who came and carried the corpse away,” she said.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Odiko Macdon confirmed on Monday in Uyo that the police has taken the corpses and deposited them in a morgue.

He said the police believe that the victims were electrocuted by the naked electrical wires inside the gutter as a result of a fallen electrical pole, adding that foul play was suspected in the death.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the victims were electrocuted because some fallen electrical poles were found around the area, giving the impression that they died of electrocution. But our investigations have not been concluded,” he stated.

  • Court opens hearing today in suit querying Atiku’s claim to be Nigerian

A Federal High Court in Abuja will today open hearing in a suit querying former vice president Atiku Abubakar’s claim to being a Nigerian by birth.

The suit, before Justice Inyang Ekwo, seeks a pronouncement to the effect that Atiku was not qualified to contest the February 23 presidential election as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The plaintiff, Incorporated Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa, wants the court to disqualify Atiku over alleged circumstances surrounding his citizenship.

The Mission wants the court to interpret the provision of Sections 25 (1) & (2) and 131 (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Listed as defendants are: the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney- General of the Federation.

The plaintiff, in a supporting affidavit, averred that Atiku was born on November 25, 1946 in Cameroon.

“That from Atiku’s own testimony that is gazetted and published in most national dailies in circulation, he is from Jada town in Adamawa and Jada used to be in Ganye Local Government Area in Adamawa.

“That Ganye is regarded as the mother of the whole Chamba tribe and was never part of Nigeria legally as at the date of birth of Atiku.”

The plaintiff wants the court to determine the following questions, viz:

    • Whether Section 25 of the Constitution is the sole authority that spells out ways by which a person can become a Nigerian citizen by birth?
    • Whether by the provisions of Section 131 (a) of the constitution, only a Nigerian citizen by birth can contest for the office of president?

    * Whether by the combined interpretation of Sections 25 (1) & (2) and 131 (a) of the constitution and given the circumstances surrounding the birth of Alhaji Atiku, he can be cleared by PDP and INEC to contest for office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?

  • Court opens hearing Thursday in suit querying Atiku’s claim to be Nigerian

A Federal High Court in Abuja will on Thursday open hearing in a suit quarrying former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claim to being a Nigerian citizen by birth.

The suit, now before Justice Inyang Ekwo, seeks a pronouncement to the effect that Atiku was not qualified to contest the last presidential election as the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The plaintiff, Incorporated Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa, wants the court to disqualify Atiku over alleged circumstances surrounding his citizenship.

It particularly wants the court to interpret the provision of Sections 25 (1) & (2) and 131 (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Listed as defendants are the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the Attorney- General of the Federation.

“That from Atiku’s own testimony that is gazetted and published in most national dailies in circulation, he is from Jada town in Adamawa and Jada used to be in Ganye Local Government Area in Adamawa.

*whether by the combined interpretation of Sections 25 (1) & (2) and 131 (a) of the constitution and given the circumstances surrounding the birth of Alhaji Atiku, he can be cleared by PDP and INEC to contest for office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?

  • Jonathan worked against PDP in last election – Group

The Save Ogbia Movement (SOM) has insisted that former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, worked against the interests of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections.

The group in a statement said the former President despite benefitting immensely from PDP abandoned candidates of his party especially in Ogbia Local Government Area and the entire East Senatorial District in the last elections.

The statement signed by the Secretary of the group, Franklin Azibola James, noted that few days to the election, the former President called a meeting of his loyalists in the party at his Otuoke home and told them to vote for the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and other candidates of their choice in the National and house of assembly elections.

James lamented that Jonathan’s disposition and lack of contributions to the party made the elections very difficult for the PDP and brought the ugly narrative of an opposition party winning his senatorial district.

He recalled that while holding sway as the President on the platform of the PDP, Jonathan failed to contribute to the unity of his party at home but allowed his presidential aides to sow seeds of discord, that almost destabilize Bayelsa.

James said having failed to attract any meaningful development to Bayelsa and his own local government, Jonathan was expected to return home and help the PDP to withstand the force of opposition.

He said: But this is far from the truth. Instead the former President has continued to promote his personal interest against the collective aspirations of the PDP. Whatever he is today was made possible by the PDP.

“As a poor creek boy, he rose to become a deputy governor, governor, Vice-President and President on the platform of the PDP. It is unimaginable that a man that had risen to prominence, will turn around to work against the same platform that supported him.

“The last election is a case study. Instead supporting his party, our former president worked for the candidates of the ADC. We can no longer keep quiet. I mean how long will we continue to cover up for the anti-PDP posture of Jonathan at his home state?

“We are still disappointed at his outing at the Presidency. He squandered a glorious opportunity to develop Bayelsa, his home state. He couldn’t even complete the East-West Road. In fact, Bayelsa section of the road had remained deplorable. He couldn’t construct roads in our own Ogbia local government area.

“Anybody that visits Ogbia will never believe that we once produced the President. We tried to swallow all of these unforgivable shortcomings. But the one that we can’t tolerate is working against the interests of PDP in elections”.

James advised the former President to forego his personal interests and work with the party leadership in the state as a demonstration of gratitude to the PDP.

“Jonathan should work with the state leadership of the PDP to promote the general interests of the party in the state. He has benefited so much in the party that his name should not be mentioned in any activity against PDP”, James said.

But the ex-President’s media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, in a recent statement said there was no truth in the claim that Jonathan was engaging in anti-party activities.

He said: “It is manifestly dishonest, deceitful and preposterous for anybody to suggest that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is working against the interest of the party under which he rose to occupy the highest office in the land.”

  • ‘We are optimistic of Atiku, Mohammed’s victory at tribunal’

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chris Uche, who doubles as the lead counsel for Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar at the presidential election tribunal, and Bauchi State governor-elect, Bala Mohammed at the governorship petition tribunal sitting in Bauchi state has expressed optimism of his clients’ victory in court.

Atiku and his party are challenging the outcome of the election on the grounds of alleged massive rigging, malpractices substantial non-compliance with the electoral laws.

In the petition, Atiku and PDP are praying that its candidate be declared winner of the February 23 presidential election.

They are also asking the tribunal to nullify the poll and order for a fresh election that will be conducted in line with the provisions of the electoral laws.

The legal luminary said all the respondents in Atiku’s cases have all filed their responses.

He mentioned President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress,APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as the respondents.

Uche added that all processes have been exchanged and very soon, there will be commencement of the pre- hearing session with the actual trial coming after that.

He, however, queried the APC for not addressing some of the issues raised in the petition filed by Atiku.

“It is very unfortunate that they have not addressed the issues we raised rather they are raising issues that we feel are mere distractions. Whether Atiku is a Nigerian citizen or not or whether one of the lawyers who signed the petition, whether he abbreviated his name or not”

“But they are yet to address the issues we raised, mainly the information on the data of INEC, the physical result that INEC gave.  They have not reacted to that and all the anomalies we pointed out.

“We are very comfortable and confident with the processes that are before the court of appeal. Very soon, hearing will be commence on that. We are optimistic of victory In both cases”

“Having looked at all the fact in both cases,  our position are very strong, we are very confident of defending the mandate of  Atiku and Bala victory and we shall come out victorious ”

Meanwhile, Bala ‘s victory is been challenged by Governor Mohammad Abubakar and the APC over alleged rigging.

Uche who spoke at the inauguration of the governor-elect’s legal team in Bauchi,   which he heads said Bala has a right to be represented and his mandate defended and protected.

“As we all know Bala Mohammed won all the election but incidentally his opponent has challenged his victory. We are here as his legal team to defend the mandate given to him voluntarily by the people of Bauchi state.

“Our legal team is a highly constituted one, and we have about 60 lawyers with 5 SANs which have been chosen to defend him”

“We have seen a copy of the filed by his opponent, we have also taken a look at it and the area of the complaints and really those are not really complains”

“Since we have just been filed and served a copy of the petition, we have 21 days to file and reply .We are already gathering our materials, the results from all the local government even though they are challenging result from only 3 out of the 20 Local government areas. We will soon file our response and will also take preliminary steps required before the pre-hearing session which will expect to take place in two weeks’ time” He said

On his part, the governor-elect has said he would use every legitimate means at his disposal to defend his electoral mandate.

Inaugurating his legal team, the Governor-elect said, “On behalf of myself, the deputy governor-elect, Baba Tela and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, of Bauchi state, I inaugurate the legal team to fight for us at the tribunal.”

“I won’t relent in defending the mandate that was freely given to me by the good people of Bauchi State. This is not the first obstacle we have had to cross, and by God’s grace, we will emerge victorious again in court. He said

The Nation had earlier reported over the weekend that Chris Uche will lead the Bauchi governor-elect ‘s team with 10 senior lawyers which include 5 SANs and 60 indigenous lawyers from Bauchi to compliment the efforts of the Uche- led legal  team in defense of Bala ‘s victory at the tribunal.

  • PDP, Atiku to tribunal: Buhari lied about academic credentials

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, have accused President Muhammadu Buhari of making false claims about his academic qualifications.

The party and its candidate argued that the President’s claim, in his response to the petition they filed at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), that he (Buhari) was more qualified than Atiku, was also a false assertion.

They noted that unlike Atiku, the President failed to exhibit his credentials, which he claimed to possess.

The PDP and Atiku raised the issues in their reply to President Buhari’s response.

They are at the PEPT to challenge the outcome of the last presidential election, which President Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), won.

In the reply filed on April 15 by their lawyers, led by Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), the PDP and Atiku argued that, having failed to attach the credentials to the Form CF001, which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it could be concluded that the President lied that his certificates were with the Army.

The duo challenged him to, as the incumbent President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to direct the Army, where he once served, to make his credentials public.

They added: “In further response to Paragraph 381(iv) of the second respondent’s reply, aver that the petitioners have no knowledge of any certificates or alleged qualifications issued to the second respondent (Buhari), but contend that second respondent falsely represented that his certificates are in the custody of the Nigerian Army when the second respondent, by his own admission, is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

“In further response to Paragraph 381(iv) of the second respondent’s reply, the petitioners aver that the second respondent as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria could easily order the Army Secretary to produce the certificates allegedly submitted, if they actually exist.

“Contrary to Paragraph 381 (i-iv) of the second respondent’s reply, the petitioners aver that the second respondent does not possess the educational qualification he claimed to have in his INEC Form CF001 submitted to the first respondent (INEC), having not been attached as required.

“In reply to Paragraph 383 of the second respondent’s reply, the petitioners aver that the first petitioner (Atiku) is eminently qualified to contest election for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and had indeed attached evidence of his educational qualifications to his INEC Form CF001 submitted to the first respondent, unlike the seconnd respondent (Buhari) who did not attach evidence of the qualifications he claimed in his INEC Form CF001 because he does not possess them as he falsely claimed.”

The PDP and Atiku argued that “the purported training and courses” which President Buhari had claimed placed him “head and shoulders” above Atiku in respect to educational qualification to contest the presidential election “did not culminate in the issuance of any certificates he claimed in his INEC Form CF001”.

They described the President’s claim of being head and shoulders above Atiku, in qualification and experience, as erroneous.

  • ‘Buhari needs best hands for Next Level agenda’

The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr Joe Igbokwe, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on selection of ministers. In this interview with Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN, he speaks on the performance of the party at the 2019 poll, Igbo presidency, Federal Government presence in the Southeast and other sundry political issues.

What was responsible for improved performance of the APC in Lagos during the governorship election?

Lagos remains the stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southwest. It is true that the margin between the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the presidential election was narrow, compared to what we had in governorship poll. One major factor responsible for this was that some Yoruba pastors told their congregators not to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari whom they described as a killer and herdsman. Again, the Igbo in Lagos voted for Atiku Abubakar, because of his running mate, Peter Obi, who is an Igbo man. The Igbo told APC governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, that they would vote for him, but will vote Atiku/Obi in the presidential election. The APC believes in free and fair electoral process; we don’t influence results like the PDP used to do when they were in power. We believe that power belongs to the people and that every vote must count for our democracy to grow.

Are you sure the Igbo in Lagos voted for the APC governorship candidate?

Yes, they did. I and some Igbo leaders made humungous efforts to ensure they voted for the APC governorship candidate. We visited all markets where there is large concentration of Igbo people to sensitise them. Even, Senator Ifeanyi Uba joined us in the crusade. We told them that they stand to benefit a lot by pitching their tent with the ruling party. We have large population of Igbo in Lagos. They have their major investments in Lagos; they don’t have one-quarter of their investments here in Lagos in the Southeast. I don’t know how Lagos will look like if the Igbo decided to leave. This is why our host community should see Igbo as partners in progress and treat them well. Lagos is second home for Igbo. They spend 11 months in a year in Lagos. They travel home during Christmas and Easter celebrations.

The Yoruba and Igbo have had good relations in the past. For instance, it was in Lagos that Igbo properties were kept and returned to them during and after the civil war, even with the rents collected on them. It also happened in the North, but not the South-south. Igbo property is said to be abandoned in the South-south. Professor Wole Soyinka, a Yoruba man braved the odds to visit Biafra during the war and came back to tell the Federal Government to stop the carnage being perpetrated by the Nigerian soldiers. He was put in jail for this. The kind of loyalty and service that late Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya offered the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe was unprecedented. When the killers of the late Head of State, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi, surfaced during his state visit to Ibadan, the capital of the old Western Region, his host, the Military Governor, the late Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, told them if you must kill him in my domain you have to kill both of us. Fajuyi sacrificed his life for national unity.

These are the things that cemented our relations. It didn’t start today. When Zik returned from overseas, he started his political career in the Western Region. The Southeast is small in population, because Igbo don’t stay at home. They move to anywhere they can find fortune. Igbo are mobile businessmen. You will find them in Kaduna, Kano, Jos, Ghana, South Africa, Canada, South America,Asia, Europe, United States, etc.

The Igbo voted massively for Atiku/Obi during the presidential election.

Don’t you think that this will affect the quest for Igbo presidency in 2023?

I told them, if you want to produce President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023, work with Hausa/Fulani/Yoruba alliance. I had expected them to vote the APC, so that they can have a shot at presidency in 2023. After the civil war, no Igbo man has ruled this country. I told them to play politics of inclusion but they voted PDP thinking Atiku will win. What will happen in 2023? It is not yet concluded. There could be a compromise for the sake of national unity.

The Igbo are not happy with their present status in the country. It is only the Southeast that has five states. With that we have smaller number of representatives in the National Assembly and the federal allocation to the region is small, compared to other zones. In Canada, a small group of people called Quebec with less than 10 per cent of the total population produced the current Prime Minister of Canada. They are French-speaking people. The President of Rwanda is a Tutsi, an ethnic group with less than 10 per cent population of Rwanda.

It is possible for Nigerians to sit down and say the Southeast is not happy, let’s have a presidential candidate from the zone for the sake of equity, justice and fairness. In addition, create additional state for the zone. If this happens, the agitation for Biafra will vanish.

But, the Southeast is clamouring for the Deputy Senate President of the 9th assembly. Is it feasible?

Who among them will be considered for Deputy Senate President? There is no APC ranking senator from the Southeast. You can’t eat your cake and have it. Anyway, we can bend the law for the sake of unity. Our national leaders may say let’s have compromise for the sake of peace, because when there is peace there will be development. Professor Harold Laski of the London School of Economics said politics is superior to economy. Politics should not be left to politicians alone. We are not making progress because of bad politics.

Can we say there is no more division in Lagos APC?

There is none. APC has a deep structure in Lagos. It is maintained throughout by hard working people. To the glory of God we have two gentlemen, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat, coming on board that to take Lagos to the next level. They belong to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s school of thought. We shall support them to achieve their goals

The presidency and the APC national caucus have endorsed Femi Gbajabiamila for House of Representatives Speakership. Was it by accident?

It was designed. He had been positioned in the House for it. He was supposed to be the Speaker in 2015, but for the rebellious acts of some APC members in the House who connived with the PDP elements to truncate the party’s arrangement. We don’t want to throw the issue of National Assembly leadership open in the House. APC has majority in both chambers to decide the leadership of the 9th National Assembly. In spite of the party endorsement, Gbajabiamila and the APC Senate President candidate, Senator Ahmed Lawan, have been going round the country seeking support from APC legislators-elect and the opposition members as well.

What would you advise President Muhammadu Buhari in choosing his new cabinet?

He should go for the best. Only the best is good enough for Nigeria. We told Nigerians during the campaign that the president, if re-elected, would take Nigeria to the next level and they are waiting for it. He is a trusted leader. He can’t do it alone; he needs capable hands to assist him.

There are a lot of saboteurs in the system; there are PDP moles in government. You find them in INEC, military, civil service and the judiciary sabotaging the government. For President Buhari to continue to fight corruption, build infrastructure and invest in the economy and security, he needs the support of loyal people, otherwise they will constitute an impediment and slow down the process.

The Buhari administration’s investment in agriculture is paying off in rice production. But the smugglers are trying to undermine the government’s efforts. I am in support of the suggestion that government should set up special courts to handle cases of economic saboteurs and the corrupt elements in the system. Our judiciary is corrupt. That is why people are calling for the establishment of special courts manned by incorruptible judges. We need to protect the interest of local rice farmers. There should be a task force to apprehend the saboteurs. Smuggling is a crime. They should be jailed.

How would you rate the achievements of the Buhari administration in the Southeast?

The infrastructure development in the Southeast under the Buhari administration is fantastic. What the PDP didn’t achieve in Southeast in 16 years, Buhari has done it in less than four years. Road construction is going on in all the Southeast states, major critical roads like Enugu-Port Harcourt road, Enugu-Onitsha road, Second Niger Bridge and many others are in progress. The Independent Power Project (IPP) in Ariara Market in Abia State financed by the Federal Government is wonderful. Light has improved in that area. Even  in Adelabu Street where I live in Surulere, Lagos, we enjoy 21 hours power supply every day.

Election results in the South-south have not changed since 1999. What is responsible for this?

The South-south is known for electoral fraud. It didn’t start today. The zone is known for election rigging since 1999. Votes don’t count in the South-south. Some rogues with the support of security operatives would seize electoral materials and write out results. Anyway, some aggrieved candidates have gone to the election petition tribunal to seek redress. We are waiting for the tribunal’s findings and rulings.

  • Sokoto not your origin- Group tells Atiku

Contrary to his claim of Sokoto as origin, a group under the auspices of ‘Concerned Citizens of Sokoto State, has disowned the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP), and Nigeria’s former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar., saying that, he should look for his origin elsewhere and not Sokoto State.

The Sokoto State Coordinator of the Group, retired Squadron Leader Aminu Bala Sokoto, disclosed this when he addressed newsmen in Sokoto .

According to the former Airforce Senior Officer, “Atiku who is now over 72 years old has never associated himself with Wurno , headquarters of Wurno Local Government of Sokoto State,  where he claims his grandfather hailed from .

“His false and atrocious claim is just coming now that he is being bogged down by a protracted electoral litigation sequel to the 2019 Presidential elections.

“He is now claiming to hail from Sokoto and Jigawa States. He has forgotten that, in 2003 he had maliciously described the people of Sokoto, Kano and the other North Western States as ungrateful  power zealots”.
