  • APC to Ndigbo: Atiku has nothing but deceit to offer you

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) on Friday warned the Southeast and leadership of the Ohaneze Ndigbo the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had nothing but deceit to offer them.

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was reacting to the Thursday endorsement of Atiku by Ohanaeze, told reporters in Abuja that the action of the group was a grave mistake aimed at deceiving the people.

Issa-Onilu said those present at the meeting were probably friends of the former Vice President who he had promised to make rich when he elected, adding that from the reaction of Igbo leaders, it was clear that the endorsement did not command the support of a cross section of the people of the geo political zone.

He dismissed Atiku’s restructuring plan as a convenient, simplistic and populist gimmick aimed at whipping up and exploiting perceived sentiments ahead of this year’s elections

He said: “We find it curious that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has tactically avoided speaking on his touted restructuring plans during his campaigns.

“Our observation comes against the backdrop of the now disputed ‘communique’ issued by some members of Ohaneze Ndigbo on the 2019 general elections.

“With a few members of Ohaneze falling for Atiku’s antics, it has now become clear that the purported endorsement of Atiku’s presidential ambition does not enjoy the support of most of the Igbos.

“One of such proofs is the statement by the Anambra State Government’s dissociating the state from the dubious endorsement of Atiku contained in the equally disputed communique.

“It would now seem that a few people in Ohaneze are trying to misrepresent the interest of the Ndigbo and we wonder whether these people are part of Atiku’s friends that he has promised to make rich as a cardinal policy of his government. Many questions beg for answers.

“Besides the deceitful restructuring promise, what else do the Igbo stand to gain from an Atiku presidency? Nothing!

“Could it be that Atiku and the PDP’s restructuring rhetoric are selective and bespoke for specific audiences? The answer is yes!

“Atiku’s restructuring rhetoric is simply a convenient, simplistic and populist gimmick aimed at whipping up and exploiting perceived sentiments ahead of the 2019 elections.

“Ndigbo and indeed all Nigerians must be wary of Atiku and his PDP ilk who, in their desperate quest for power, are ever ready to play fraudulent political games and parade themselves as ethnic champions to the gullible. We must protect the sanctity of our nationhood.

“Atiku has refused to speak on the nature of the restructuring that he is cashing in on.

“But little wonder because he is transactional in nature. Atiku has no plan for this country and he is not pretending about it.

“He has said it clearly and on many occasions that he is seeking power to be able to sell off national assets to make his friends and himself rich.

“There is no doubt that Atiku only intends to use and dump the Igbo people.

“Ndigbo should not forget that it was during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku as vice that Nigeria’s political history witnessed the frequent manipulated changes to the Senate Presidency and setting of Igbo brothers against one another for political gains.

  • Tradermoni fundamentally flawed, says Atiku

Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar on Friday dismissed the Federal Government’s social investment programme, especially the Tradermoni scheme as fundamentally flawed.

According to him the beneficiaries are” untrained, untraceable and funding inadequate”.

Atuku, who was represented by his running mate Peter Obi, spoke at a two- day job creation exhibition in Asaba, Delta State.

According to him, unemployment can only be solved by promoting micro, small and medium enterprises, urging the federal government to understudy the Delta State government’s scheme.

His words: “The focus of every government is to create employment and you can’t solve unemployment anywhere in the world without promoting micro, small and medium enterprises.

“So, what Governor Okowa is doing through the job creation office, training people and giving them the funding to start their businesses.

“When you compare it with the Trader Moni initiative by the F.G, I really don’t want to compare them, but how can you give people N10, 000 without training?

“Who do we even know that they are giving the money? How would they collect the money?

“Here we train them and support them with funding. This is happening only in Delta.

“Other government should come and learn from Okowa. So the Federal Government should come to Delta State and learn.”

Okowa said the economic downturn that heralded his assumption of office threatened to derail his campaign promise of prosperity for all Deltans, adding “our novel job creation scheme, geared at nurturing, supporting, supporting and promoting micro, small and medium scale enterprises is triggering off a new wave of economic growth, social inclusion and sustainable development.”

He said 4,253 unemployed youths have become business owners across various skill areas since his administration came on board.

Okowa listed the areas of job training to include ICT, catering, event management, beauty services, agricultural production and agricultural processing.

He said the job creation scheme has been endorsed by the World Bank/European Union State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) for funding support.

  • Anambra Govt. not part of communiqué endorsing Atiku – SSG

The Anambra Government has disassociated itself from a purported communiqué by Ohaneze Ndigbo endorsing the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for the Feb. 16 presidential election.

Abubakar is the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate in the February 16 election.

Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, the Secretary to Anambra Government (SSG), made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu.

Chukwulobelu declared that the contents of the communiqué did not reflect the Anambra Government’s position.

It will be recalled that an arm of the Ohaneze Ndigbo ‘Ime Obi’ arising from a meeting on Thursday in Enugu declared support for Abubakar.

Ime Obi is like a rapid response arm of the Ohaneze Ndigbo, comprising delegations from the seven states that make up the organisation including state governors.

However, Chukwulobelu expressed dismay that the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation had decided to be partisan, in spite of the fact that members of the organisation belong to different political parties.

Chukwulobelu said: “We have read bits of the communiqué purportedly issued by the Ohaneze leadership. We regret that they do not reflect the position of the people and Government of Anambra State.

“The position of the Anambra State Government is that Ohaneze should remain a united umbrella for all Ndigbo, and should not take sides with any party.

“There are major leaders in all political parties, including the three major ones in Nigeria, namely, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress ( APC) and PDP.

“It is deeply regrettable that the Ohaneze leadership has chosen to go down a divisive trajectory capable of setting back Igbo unity for several years,” he said.

The SSG said that Gov. Willie Obiano had sent a delegation to attend the Ime Obi meeting summoned by the organisation in Enugu.

“Our delegation arrived early enough to participate in the meeting of Ime Obi scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

“We were surprised to learn that the meeting had been held earlier and lasted for a mere 30 minutes.

“The representative of the Ebonyi State Government, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe, who arrived at the venue before the time the meeting was scheduled to start was also surprised that it had already taken place.

“The same goes for others like the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige,” he said.

Chukwulobelu said that they were shocked that the meeting was even slated for a day President Muhammadu Buhari was campaigning in Anambra and Enugu States.

He said that Buhari’s visit to Anambra was to honour Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, First Republic President of Nigeria, and the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo was expected to participate actively.

“We were, indeed, surprised that the Ime Obi meeting could hold today (on Thursday) of all days.

‘‘We had expected Ohaneze leaders to participate actively in the inauguration of the Zik Mausoleum, Onitsha, Anambra State,” he said.

Chukwulobelu said that the Mausoleum which had been under construction for the past 23 years was completed by the Buhari’s Administration which was a big honour to Azikiwe, an Igbo man.

  • Atiku’s endorsement splits Ohaneze Ndigbo

Chieftains of Ohaneze Ndigbo are split over the purported endorsement of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Abubakar Atiku by the organisation.

It would be recalled that an arm of the organisation known as ‘Ime Obi’ arising from its meeting on Thursday, declared support for Atiku on the grounds that he was running with an Igbo man, Mr Peter Obi.

This endorsement is in clear contrast of earlier stance of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation of not endorsing any of the presidential candidates.

However, a former Secretary General of the organisation, Chief Obiora Ozobu, described the move as a hoax and personal invention of the President General of the organisation, Chief Nnia Nwodo.

Ozobu, who disclosed this in Enugu on Thursday during a media briefing appealed to the people of the area to ignore the endorsement.

He described it as a mischievous act aimed at causing division among Ndigbo.

He said that Nwodo lacked the capacity to summon a meeting of ‘Ime Obi’ because his tenure as president general had lapsed.

He also wondered why such meeting was held on a day President Muhammadu Buhari was in Anambra and Enugu States for his presidential campaign when the Zik mausoleum was inaugurated.

He said that the leaders of the organisation were expected to participate actively in the inauguration ceremony of the project which was started 23 years ago but completed by Buhari.

Ozobu said that the meeting could be best described as a meeting of friends of Atiku and did not represent the wishes of the people of the area.

“The meeting is an attempt to perpetuate Nwodo in office. Granted that there were attempts to extend the tenure of Ohaneze executives to four but such has not materialised,” he said.

Also speaking, the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige described the move as unfortunate, adding that the endorsement of presidential candidates had never done anything good for Ndigbo.

Ngige said that Ohaneze as a socio-cultural organisation had no business endorsing a particular candidate.

The minister said that it was obvious that Nwodo had divided the organisation along party lines, adding that “we will fight this out.”

Former Enugu State governor, Mr Sullivan Chime noted that the said endorsement was done by those that had left office.

“It was not a meeting of Ohaneze Ndigbo but a meeting between Nwodo and his friends. Ohaneze has no business doing what that group did,” Chime said.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Geoffrey Onyeama, similarly said that it was inappropriate for such a meeting to hold at a time Buhari was in the South East for his campaign.

Onyeama described the purported meeting as a calculated attempt to exclude a significant number of people from such gathering, assuming it was a meeting of Ohaneze.

“A significant number of the membership was not present at the meeting assuming it was a meeting of Ohaneze. So it is inappropriate to have a meeting of such magnitude,” Onyeama said.

Former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani, said that such a position made no meaning to the people of the area.

“Our sons and daughters belong to many political parties and our people have never voted as a block but according to their conscience,” he said.

Nnamani said that such position was not in the best interest of the people and would not stand.

In a reaction, the Personal Assistant to the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Mr Emeka Attamah, said that everyone was entitled to their opinions.

Attamah said that Ohaneze Ndigbo had endorsed who they wanted, adding that the people kicking against it were members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said that it was misleading to say that the tenure of the executive members of the organisation was two years, adding that the constitution had been amended to reflect the current four-year tenure.

“The tenure is four years and they should go to court to contest,” Attamah said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that other chieftains of the organisation at the briefing are the Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu and Chief Osita Okechukwu among others.

  • Ohanaeze adopts Atiku for president

The pan-Igbo socio-political group has adopted Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku  Abubakar as its candidate in the February 16 presidential election.

Former Anamabra State Governor Peter Obi is Atiku’s running mate.

The group met in Enugu where it issued a communiqué in which it explained its position.

The communique issued at the end of the Ime Obi meeting today reads:

“In its collective search for a polity that is just, egalitarian and inclusive, the Ime Obi Ohaneze Ndi Igbo met today (Thursday) 24 January, 2019 at the Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, to further deliberate on the future of Ndigbo in the chequred history of a beleaguered country.

“After a critical and dispassionate appraisal of the issues and the visible fault lines in our polity,   including the analysis of the election manifestos of  the various contesting parties, especially with regards to the restructuring of the federation and continued relevance of our people in the Nigerian geopolitical space, the meeting resolved as follows:

    • That Ohaneze remains the apex socio-cultural organisation that works  for the interest of the Igbo in and outside Nigeria. It attempts to aggregate the views of  all other  Igbo platforms;
    • Ohaneze notes particularly that a major political party (PDP) by the nomination of  our son Peter Obi as the vice presidential candidate has given Ndigbo an opportunity for inclusivity. Ndigbo must seize the moment;
    • That the presidential candidate of PDP Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has made an avowed commitment to restructuring of the federation and reconfirmed same during his recent visit to the United States in his meetings with high-level US officials;
    • In consideration of the above and other relevant existential factors pertaining to the treatment of the Igbo in our polity,  the Ime Obi Ohaneze, therefore, hereby ratify the decision reached at the Ohaneze National Executive Committee (NEC)meeting held in Enugu on Tuesday, 22 January, 2019, to adopt the Atiku Abubakar/ Peter Obi ticket in the 2019 presidential election. Ime Obi therefore endorses and embraces fully this ticket, without equivocation, especially  with regards to the position of Ndigbo  at the AWKA Declaration which insisted on a complete restructuring of the Nigerian polity.
    • Ohaneze urges Ndigbo to see  their PVCs as their most potent tool  to ensure a restructured polity and for a better  society;
    • The meeting further called on the international community to help to ensure a free and credible 2019 elections in Nigeria;
    • Finally, Ohaneze urges all Igbo to come out and vote and to protect their votes.

The communiqué was signed by John Nnia Nwodo, President-General Ohaneze Ndigbo World Wide.

  • Non-indigenes in Ebonyi endorse Atiku

Non-indigenous women in Ebonyi State have endorsed presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar.

The women said the All Progressives Congress (APC) government had failed to live up to the minimum expectations of Nigerians in infrastructure, security and job creation.

The women spoke yesterday at the Friends of Atiku Campaign Office in Abakaliki, when they visited the state coordinator, Linus Abaa Okorie.

Leader of Benue women in Ebonyi State Mrs. Ujoh Rose condemned the “disheartening” treatment” meted out to the women under the APC government, saying the time had come to end the ugly development.

She noted that women were not being carried along in the scheme of things due to the belief of the leaders that women should belong to the “other room”.

Mrs. Ujoh, who retired as an assistant director of Administration in the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, said: “If you study how politicians handle women and youths during campaigns and after elections, it is very disheartening because they only value us during elections and discard us after victory.

“Since I retired from service, no benefits, no entitlements, nothing at all. Each time I call the man in charge, he will say I am in a meeting. What kind of meeting is that that holds everyday and which does not end? It is time to change that, and it is our belief that Atiku Abubakar will be very different when he comes on board on May 29.

“As leaders of women groups from various tribes and ethnic groups in Nigeria, we shall galvanise our fellow women to ensure Atiku’s victory on February 16.”

Mrs. Hajia Adiza Abubakar, leader of Hausa Women from Adamawa State, said chilling reports of killings and insecurity across the country demand urgent attention, stressing that Atiku Abubakar is the only presidential candidate with the experience and political will to tackle the challenges.

She said: “All these killings, hunger and unemployment everywhere in Nigeria should be addressed, and I know that my brother Atiku will stop it when he becomes President. All our women have decided to vote for him for the betterment of Nigeria.”

Okorie praised the women for the visit, and assured them that Nigeria would be great and prosperous under Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

He directed the women’s coordinator of the Friends of Atiku, Mrs. Eze Mercy, to work with the women to ensure Atiku’s victory in next month’s polls.

  • I’ll bring back economic growth, says Atiku

PEOPLE’S Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar yesterday promised to bring back the country’s wealth and prosperity, if voted into power in the February 16 presidential election.

This came as the party’s National Chairman, Uche Secondus, said President Muhammadu Buhari has tried, but he has lost the strength to lead a country of 200 million people.

Atiku, who addressed a presidential rally in Kaduna in Hausa language, said there was no hunger and poverty among Nigerians when the PDP was in power.

He alleged that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) had failed to fulfill its 2015 campaign promises, urging the electorate to vote the PDP back to power on February 16 to return the nation back to the path of progress.

The former vice president said the APC and Buhari promised to tackle security but failed, as the challenges continued in most part of the country.

He, however, said the APC and the President must go, urging the people to vote the PDP from bottom to top.

“The PDP is responsible for all the development in this country. But they came and deceived people and lied to them and asked them to vote for change. But where is the change?

“The APC promised to tackle insecurity, but the challenges are still here, ravaging the Northeast, Northwest and the Northcentral. Have they fulfilled the promises? So, why are going to vote for them?

“When PDP was power, there prosperity, wealth and development.

“So, let me tell you, if you vote the PDP, we shall bring back prosperity, progress, employment and trades to the people. This is a promise we are making to you.

“I am begging you to vote the PDP from top to bottom and bottom to top. So join me in chanting ‘Buhari must go, APC must go’. May God bless you.”

Secondus said that President Buhari has tried, but did no longer have the strength to continue to rule over 200 million  people.

“It is time to ask President Buhari to go, he has tried. But let him go home and rest. His energy is no more there. We need somebody with a lot of energy that can work for 24 hours.

“If you vote for APC, the cabal will be in control of government because Buhari is weak; he cannot rule.

“We want somebody who has capacity to rule this country, and that person is Atiku. Atiku will provide jobs, food, security and others for Nigerians.

“Nigeria is 200 million people. So, Atiku will not sleep until there is food on your table and security of lives and property all over the country. Atiku will not fail you.”

The PDP national chairman said the era of election rigging is over, saying that nobody can rig election any longer.

He warned INEC to resist the temptation of rigging the election.

On his part, the Director-General of the PDP campaign and Senate President Bukola Saraki said “the APC promised us security, but there is no security anywhere in Nigeria.

“There is no security in the Northeast, no security in the Northwest, no security in the Northcentral; no security anywhere in Nigeria

“They promised us economic growth, but Nigeria is now the capital of poverty.

“Come February, Nigerians should vote for the PDP in all the elections. We want a better Nigeria, not the APC propaganda.

“Atiku has capacity to deliver and provide jobs. He is the man that understands and can deliver. APC lies have come to an end. Nigerians are tired of propaganda,” Saraki said.

Former interim PDP National Chairman of PDP Senator Ahmed Makarfi said the crowd has confirmed that Kaduna is a PDP state.

“We in PDP, we don’t abuse. Whatever road, water supply, big educational institutions, secondary school and health facilities you see in Kaduna State, was built by PDP.

“During PDP, we have peace in Kaduna, people were doing their farming in peace and we’re making profit. If you vote PDP again, you will get these things back. Vote for PDP from top to bottom, presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state house of assemblies,” the ex-Kaduna State governor said.

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo urged all the party supporters to ensure that they have their PVCs ready to enable them to vote for candidates of their choice.

He promised that “Atiku will atikulate you”.

PDP gubernatorial candidate in Kaduna State Isah Ashiru urged the party’s supporters to keep their PVs ready.

“Some people are going round saying they have won election but we are waiting for the polling day. We should make sure that we vote, wait for our votes to be counted and defend our votes,” he said.

Those at the campaign rally include ex-Governors Mukthar Yero of Kaduna, Liyel Imoke of Cross Rivers and Boni Haruna of Adamawa State. Chairman PDP board of trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin, Senator Datti Ahmed and PDP candidates in Kaduna State.

  • APC planning to rig presidential election, says Atiku

PEOPLE’S Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar yesterday accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to rig the forthcoming general elections.

The former vice president, who spoke at the PDP Southeast rally in Owerri, the Imo State capital, urged the people to protect their votes by staying back at the polling units after casting their votes.

He added that except such measures were taken, the APC would manipulate the election.

He said: “APC is planning to rig the election. Please protect your votes. We have promised to restructure this country. APC is an evil party. They have turned this country as headquarter of poverty.”

He noted that under the APC, Nigeria has been made poorer.

“We are going to take over the country in the next election. Immediately after your vote, stay there and protect your vote. We want the economy to start growing again. We want you to vote PDP at all levels. Let nobody deceive you.”

Atiku went on to describe the APC as an evil party that wants to sink Nigeria, if not stopped.

PDP vice presidential candidate Peter Obi stated that the Southeast will vote for Atiku.

“He is the one to develop Igboland. He has promised us restructuring. He will revamp the economy of Nigeria. Igbo people will vote Atiku Abubakar,” he said.

Senate President Bukola Saraki said: “We have come here to see that the entire Southeast zone is part of the making of Atiku as the next president. Let me tell you, he has the capacity to make Nigeria united. I know that Nigerians are not happy the way it is now. Believe me, Atiku will solve the whole problems.”

  • Emefiele to Atiku: your monetary policy agenda disastrous

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate’s suggestion that the exchange rate should be free float is a recipe for disaster.

The CBN governor said: “The MPC reviewed it and concluded that it would be wrong. It is as good as saying that we should go back to the era of Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in Nigeria. The implication can better be imagined. It will certainly lead to capital flight, lead to massive depreciation or devaluation of the currency and ultimately to currency crisis in Nigeria and I think we should all know that it is a road to perdition to ever go in that direction.”

Addressing reporters at the end of the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, the first for the year, Emefiele added: “There is no capital control in Nigeria today because you cannot find the CBN trying to intervene in the market for demand and supply of foreign exchange.”

Emefiele went on: “Normally, the Central Bank as an independent institution is apolitical but it is also important that at the MPC meeting today we asked ourselves if there is any merit in it to begin to say that we should look at free-floating the currency or that we should allow free import of goods that we have restricted. The MPC came to a conclusion that this was a wrong premise.

“We cannot be talking about allowing import of items that can be produced in the country today, exporting jobs from Nigeria to foreign countries, and we say we have the interest of Nigeria at heart? We don’t agree with anybody. It is a wrong premise to say that you will allow imports to just flood the country just because you want to please anybody. It is not in our interest.

“We will remain apolitical. We will not want anybody to drag the central bank into issues that are within our remit otherwise, we would respond to it.”

The CBN governor admitted that the apex bank has instructed banks ro suspend interest on loans for fuel imports. According to him, “we have indeed told banks to suspend interest on those loans from July 2017. They should collect whatever credit notes have been issued and credit the account of petroleum marketers immediately. If any bank refuses to do so, the marketer or their association are free to report to CBN, mention the name of the bank and we will appeal to the bank to please carry out this instruction.”

With regards to forex restrictions on imported items, Emefiele said CBN would get even more aggressive to see to it that any or all food items that can be produced in Nigeria and consumed in Nigeria and are currently being imported into Nigeria may face forex restrictions.

Emefiele said: “We would go through our records and once we convince ourselves that these products can be produced in Nigeria, we will place them on the FX restriction list. It means that you cannot source foreign exchange from Nigeria foreign exchange market to import those items into Nigeria. If you have free dollars, you can bring it in but you will not be able to even make payments for those goods with dollars from the Nigerian foreign exchange market. This is because we think that the initatives that CBN has put in place in the past to cut imports and diversify the structure of the Nigerian economy is yielding results and we will continue to be that aggressive. And we also went further to say that the Economic Intelligence Department of the CBN together with EFCC would investigate any company, any individual suspected of bringing these items through smuggling or any means for money laundering and economic sabotage. And that if we discover and conclusively too, that these companies or individuals that are are involved in bringing these goods, we would write to all the banks that they should blacklist all those companies and individuals running those companies that they can no longer operate any bank accounts in any Nigerian bank. We don’t need to talk about prosecuting them but just to say we will not allow you to do business in Nigeria and of course you know the implications of that.”

Highlighting his successes and achievements as CBN governor, Emefiele argued that “Dangote is today establishing the biggest refinery I have ever seen. The size of Dangote refinery is at least 10 times the size of Victoria Island. By April 2019 when Dangote Fertiliser Plant begins to roll, we will place a ban on the importation of fertiliser because Nigeria will both be self-sufficient and even export.”

He also disclosed that he has “written to governors in the Southsouth and Southeast that time has come to stop importation of crude palm oil. A barrel of crude palm oil is more expensive than crude petroleum per barrel. I told them that we will re-establish the oil palm belt in the Southsouth and Southeastern parts of the country. Edo State has reacted positively like some other states. With support and intervention from CBN and government, we would reverse the trend. That should be the direction. It is important to say this so that people can know that the economy is doing well. A lot of work still needs to be done, there are still a clouple of vulnerabilities and fragilities that we see in the economy but we are determined to resolve them.”

At the end of the MPC meeting, all 11 members voted to keep the policy parameters unchanged from their current levels. By this decision, the MPC decided to retain the MPR at 14%; retain the asymmetric corridor of +200/-500 basis points around the MPR; retain the CRR at 22.5 per cent; and retain the Liquidity Ratio at 30 per cent.

In his assessment of the economy so far, Emefiele said: “It is important for me to say that if we think about where we are coming from, I would say I like to use some numbers: for instance, in September 2008, Nigeria’s reserve was about $62 billion, GDP was 7.2%; inflation was 15%.

“By January 2014, GDP was 6.2%, inflation had trended downwards to 8% and external reserve was 40%. Let us not forget that we were in a period of prosperity, in terms of crude prices between 2009 and 2014 which is five straight years, with no shut-ins in pipelines, with high crude oil price, reserve still dropped.

“From the end of 2014, we started another round of global crises. The global crises resulted in stagflation in Nigeria. GDP dropped, to 2.79% in 2015, went further and contracted to negative of 1.58% in 2016, improved in 2017 and then we are hopeful that 2018 would end at about 1.8%.

He added that “Inflation was 15% in 2008, dropped to 8% in 2014 and it moved up to about 9.5% and by January 2017, it had moved up to 18.7% but today, through the activities of monetary and fiscal authorities, inflation had gone down to 11.4%.

He also stated that “by 2008, with higher reserves, with higher productivity reserves dropped to $40 billion in January 2014 anmd ended 2014 at $35 billion, went further down in 2015 to $28 billion and indeed by October 2016 as a result of economic crises, reserves had plummeted further to $23 billion. Today as a result of all the actions and activities of both the monetary and fiscal authorities supported by the government, reserve is up, went to $39 billion in 2017 and 2018 we closed at $42.5 and I said so in my communique that even as at now, as a result of the confidence in the management of the Nigerian foreign exchange, the confidence in the management of the country, we’ve seen confidence even in foreign investors returning, reserves as at yesterday was $43.28 billion.”

Emefiele added: “We have seen FX stability in the market and as if all of you will recall, that sometime in 2016 and up to early 2017, we saw a situation where exchange rate even in the black market had moved up in February to N525/$ and I was being told that by March, it will hit N1000/$. But as a result of the actions of CBN today, the all markerts in fact BDC has come down to about N360/$ and even slightly lower. The I&E Window, which is a market that we set up as a free in-free-out market today is about N362/$. So we have seen a substantial convergence in the foreign exchange market in Nigeria.”

On balance of trade developments, the CBN governor noted that “when people say nothing has happened in the economy, they should know that it is not a fair comment to make both on government and also on the monetary authority. In 2008, imports stood at $86 billion. By 2017, it had dropped to $45.8 billion as a result of the activities of government and of monetary and fiscal authorities.”

“Trade balance in 2008 was $46.2 billion, went down during the period of global crises to $6.4 billion and today it is up. In 2017 it was $13.15 billion and closed at $18.7 billion in 2018. When you talk about activities that related to issues on the restriction of foreign exchange for the importation of certain food items you will also find for instance that rice which is a major staple in Nigeria: data from the Thai Rice Exporters Association says that in 2014, Nigeria imported 1.2 million metric tonnes of rice. In 2015, it had dropped to 644 metric tons. In 2016 to 58,000 metric tons. In 2017, to 23,000 metric tons and 2018 to 6,000 metric tons” he pointed out.

While reading the communique, Emefiele lamented that “on external borrowing, committee noted the increase in debt levels, advising for caution, noting that it could fast be approaching the pre-2005 Paris Club exit levels. MPC also noted that although there was an increase in inflation rate for the second consecutive month based on month on month, inflation continued to moderate indicating that the year on year measures will also moderate in the near term.”
