  • Kogi: Faleke good as Audu’s runningmate, says businessman

The emergence of House of Representatives member, James Faleke as the running mate to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu, has been described as a good omen in the confluence state.

The Chief Executive (CEO) of Grandure Mobile Tent, Mr. Wemi Jones, who made the remark, noted that his selection to support the Prince of the Niger in the rescue mission from the hands of the rudderless Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has really united the party.

Disclosing this in Kabba, the Bunu-born businessman described Faleke as a great son of Okunland and good ambassador of Kogi State, whose political profile has risen to the pinnacle Lagos and Abuja.

He said his wealth of experience as a two-term council chairman and as a serving member of the House of Representatives, representing Ikeja/Ojodu Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, for a second term will help the state.

Mr. Wemi said as a true son of Okunland, Faleke needed the support of all and sundry to realise his ambition in lifting Kogi to loftier heights. According to him, the era of bad leadership was over, lamenting the neglect of his people by successive governments in the state.

Kogi guber: Wada, Audu in fresh battle royal

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress  (APC), are warming up for the governorship election of  Kogi State in Nigeria’s north-central. Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, examines the looming contest between two political arc rivals and their parties.

On November 21, governorship election will hold in Kogi State, according to the timetable recently released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Attention is on the confluence state as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) battle for the political control.

The upcoming election in Kogi is a peculiar one. The state has been governed by the PDP since 2003 following its defeat of the defunct All Peoples Party (APP) and the then Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Audu. Several efforts by opposition party, usually led by the resolute Audu, to send the PDP packing had failed since then.

However, the governorship election coming up in the state in November this year is daily gathering momentum following the emergence of former Governor Abubakar Audu as the candidate of the opposition All Peoples Congress (APC). Indications from the former Governor’s camp are that the APC is battle ready to oust the incumbent, Governor Idris Wada, who himself is willing to rule the state for another four years.

The emergence of Governor Idris Wada as the candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship election in the state, few days after APC settled for Audu,  has further heightened anxiety over the planned poll. According to party sources, the PDP is looking forward to defeating Audu again, the same way it did in the last three guber elections.

Already, the APC which has also named Hon. James Faleke as its deputy governorship candidate, has constituted a governorship campaign council for the election. This is according to the state party chairman, Haadi Ametuo. The party boss said the council is headed by Isah Daniel.

Ametuo, who is also a member of the council, listed other members to include Halima Alfa, Lincho Ocheje, Salihu Akawu and the APC woman leader, Rabi Haruna. Others are Ibrahim Atodo, the youth leader, while Ibrahim Ahovi will serve as the Secretary. All serving and former members of national and state assemblies as well as governorship aspirants of the party would also serve as members.

The ruling PDP on its part, just emerging from a rancorous primary election process that saw Gov Wada warding off very stiff challenge from many aspirants led by his agelong political rival, Isa Echoco, is said to be conscious of the threat posed by the APC which shocked the ruling party during the last presidential and national assembly elections.

“We know this is not going to be an easy ride for PDP. And we are not going to approach the election with levity. But we are sure of victory since the people of Kogi state cannot be deceived. They know what they want from their leaders and Governor Wada’s achievements in office is enough to sell to the people during campaign,” a PDP chieftain told The Nation.

Observers of the politics of the state said it is too early to say where the pendulum will swing as the two leading political parties have gone all out to seek the people’s vote. According to reports, both APC and the PDP are out there canvassing for the support of the people of the state in various manners.

“Unlike before when the ruling party is wont to take some parts of the state for granted, given that such areas are the party’s stronghold, the party is everywhere seeking votes. And the opposition too is not leaving any part of the state out of tis reach in its bid to win over the people. There is no doubt that both parties believe the game is still very much open,” Sola Amedu, State Co-ordinator of the Voters’ Rights Agenda (VRA), said.

    The candidates

Prince Abubakar Audu, first Executive Governor of the state and now APC governorship candidate, is from Ogbonicha-Alloma in Ofu Local Government Area. He ruled the state between 1991-1993, and again between 1999-2003. A banker before venturing into politics, Audu spent a total of 25 years with the First Bank, formerly Standard Bank, where he served in different capacities at management levels until 1991.

He was appointed Commissioner for Finance and Economic planning in the former Benue State in 1986 serving in this capacity for two years. In 1991, he contested for the Governorship position in Kogi State under the ticket of the National Republican Convention (NRC). He was sworn in on 2 January 1992 as the First Executive Governor of Kogi State. It was in this capacity that he transformed the infrastructural landscape of Kogi State.

According to his supporters, his achievement in office as Governor is responsible for the massive support he enjoys from the people of the state. In spite for failing in his bids to return to Government House on previous occasions, Audu is believed to have widespread support across the length and breadth of the state.

“Within the 22 months lifespan of his first stint as Governor, which was abruptly terminated by military intervention, Prince Audu made monumental landmarks in virtually all sectors, particularly in the area of housing, electricity, roads, education, and health care services. His social-economic contribution in the State is to date a point of reference to the generality of the people and many aspiring leaders.

Some of his major achievement during his brief 1st term of office includes the establishment of three different housing schemes for public officers, the Lokoja township roads with asphalt, street lights, aesthetic roundabouts, and over 75 electrification schemes and 50 water projects.

Other achievements include, the founding of Kogi State Polytechnic, the establishment of a television station, radio station, both AM and FM, a state newspaper and the transformation of the colonial residence of Lord Lugard into an Ultra Modern Government House Complex, the construction of office blocks for ministries among others,’

On 9 January 1999, Prince Audu got re-elected into the saddle of leadership of Kogi State under the ticket of the All  People’s Party (APP). He established of Obajana Cement Factory. The establishment of a state university, Kogi State University Anyigba, is another plus for Audu.

Other projects credited to him include: the five star confluence Beach Hotel, 250 units Housing Estate, a Sport Complex, a Specialist Eye Hospital and 25 other medical Institutions. Others are: a Special Government Girls Secondary School on Student exchange programme, 350 borehole schemes, 300 kilometers of township roads, the procurement of 100 transit buses and completion of 40 rural electrification projects.

Audu joined other progressives to form the APC and today, he is the governorhsip aspirant of the party in Kogi state. This is his third attempt at staging a return to Lord Lugard House after his defeat by the PDP in 2003. Many pundits are saying he may emerge victorious largely on the strength of this new party, than on his own merit or popularity.

Governor Wada hails from Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State. A businessman and pilot with over 35 years in the aviation industry before going into politics, he became a first-class flying instructor at the young age of twenty-three (23) and at the age of 29, Capt. Idris Wada joined the then national carrier, Nigerian Airways as a line pilot where he rose to the rank of “Pilot in Command’’.

In 1983, he joined the United Air Services (UAS) where he rose to the position of Chief Pilot and General Manager, within a very short period. He founded the Executive Aviation Service (EAS) with some other pilots making him one of the pioneer indigenous airline operators in Nigeria.

He worked for Nicon Airways Ltd as the Executive Vice Chairman from 2006 to 2007. Wada is Executive Chairman of Afroconsult Ltd since 1995 to date. He is the Chairman Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Tech) Potiskum, Yobe State since 2008 to date.

He joined active politics in 2011 and ran for the highest position in Kogi State, the position of Kogi State Governor. He defeated his major opponent Abubakar Audu, succeeding the former governor, Ibrahim Idris his cousin, making him the third civilian governor of Kogi State since the creation of the state in 1992.

After months of speculations, Kogi State Governor Idris Wada finally declared his ambition to contest for second term.

Wada made his intention known  on Tuesday, August 18, and said his achievements in office qualifies him to seek the people’s mandate again.

He revealed thatnumerous projects, spread across agriculture, education, health, tourism, water supply, security human capital development and road construction, have been completed by his administration in his first term. The Governor who said he still has a lot to offer, decried allegations of incompetence against him.

He commented on the synergy between the state government and various security agencies stating that there is a “clear reduction in the number of armed robbery and bank robbery incidences throughout the state.” He said this was made possible by his commitment to securing the lives and properties of the people of the state “in spite of the numerous challenges encountered.”

He said, “We have tried in the face of these challenges and limited financial resources to record some modest achievements within this one year … the judgment of our administration belongs to you.”

    APC VS PDP

But the opposition APC says Wada has not done enough to seek another term. The party said the state has not move forward since the pilot-turned- politician replaced forearm Governor Ibrahim Idris as governor on January 27, 2012. The State chairman of APC, Haddy Ametuo, while saying Wada cannot win the forthcoming election, declared that the state under Wada has not recorded any tangible development in the past three years.

He lamented the deplorable condition of some roads in the state especially Lokoja,  the state capital. He vowed that the APC government if elected into power next year will restore the state to the position of development it was when the first executive governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu left office in 2003. It is for this reason he wants the people to return Audu to Lord Lugard House.

“Kogi is one of the states blessed with abundant natural resources but the administration has not made concerted effort to develop them. It is observed that the tourism potential of the state and its closeness to the Federal Capital, Abuja is enough for the state to generate enough internal revenue and turn the state to another Kenya of Nigeria,” he said.

However, the incumbent government insists it has done a lot for the state since it came to power. “One of the achievements of the government is the elimination of  the activities of political  thugs in the state. It would be recalled that during the administration of former governor of the state,  Ibrahim Idris, political thugs operate freely without fear.

Thuggery and youth restiveness which the state was known for, few years ago has now become a thing of the past. It is only when the people are free to go about their business without fear that they can feel the presence of any government. We have ended the reign of terror in Kogi,” an aide to the Governor said.

Audu to indigenes: make change happen

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu, has urged the electorate to effect change during the poll, to ensure transformation in all spheres of life.

Addressing a crowd yesterday at Anyigba in Dekina Local Government at the launch of the party’s campaign, he said the state’s future lay in the hands of the voters, who had the ability to effect positive change.

Audu said 12 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration had moved the state backward, adding that the infrastructure provided during his tenure had been allowed to decay.

Said he: “The power is in your hands, you can effect the change mantra of the APC in Kogi State and see instant development and advancement of the state for the future of your children and those yet unborn.

“I have done it before and I can also do it even better if you give me the mandate. If I can establish Kogi State University, Confluence Beach Hotel, build a befitting Government House, provide electricity and water in rural areas, among others, when the federal allocation to the state was below N400 million per month, I will do better now that the allocation is several billions of naira per month.”

The APC standard-bearer said 12 years of PDP administration could not translate into the well-being of the people. He assured the people that within one year, if given the mandate, he would use his connection and exposure to breathe life into the infrastructure that had been allowed to decay.

Audu noted: “Posterity will judge all of us if we allow the only state we can call ours to be dragged into the mud by inexperienced leaders, who do not have the interest of the state at heart.

“I have discussed with members of the international community in London, France and America. They are ready to help us through massive investment that will lead to job creation and improvement in the living standard of the people.”

He promised to declare all parts of the state as disaster areas, to attend to their needs.

Ex-Kano State Governor Kabiru Gaya said Prince Audu was not a hidden talent in the business of transformation, adding that his achievements when he was the governor was a testimony that if given another mandate, he would take Kogi to the promised land.

He told the people not to allow the opportunity slip off their hands, enjoining them to vote for Audu, to effect the desired transformation.

  • Audu urges APC members to unite

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kogi State , Prince Abubakar Audu, at the weekend, urged other aspirants to cooperate with him to enable the party win the November 21 election.

He said: “The victory is for all the aspirants.”

A statement by his media aide, Suleiman Abdulmalik, quoted Audu as saying the APC family was united and ready for the election.

The APC candidate said the party was posied to win the election.

He hailed the other aspirants for their efforts, adding that they projected the party in a good light.

Audu said: “I am reaching out to all my brothers and sisters. My emergence is indeed a victory for all the aspirants and our great party.

“The onerous task is how to win and rebuild our state, create jobs for our  youths and pay salary arrears. There are a lot to achieve.”

A chieftain of the APC, Alhaji Sanusi Omeiza Salami, congratulated Audu on his victory at the primary.

He said it was well deserved.

Salami urged the other aspirants to work with the winner to ensure the party’s victory in the election.

He said: “This victory is for all; hence, the need to build a united party, to uproot the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the league of the progressives.”

  • My plans to restore Kogi, by Audu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu, has promised to accelerate the economic development if voted into office.

Audu, who made the promised while receiving the indigenes living in the United States (US), said it was regrettable that the state was stagnant and required efforts to terminate the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government via the November 21 governorship election.

The APC standard-bearer, who promised to ensure the development of the state, said Kogites in the diaspora would see a new state if they returned after six months of his administration.

He said the previous governments failed to improve on his performance when he left the Lugard House in 2003.

Ex-Governor Audu has just returned to the country after trips to the United Kingdom and the United States where he conferred with stakeholders and business communities on his blueprint to build a new state.

He left the country after he picked a member of the House of Representatives, Abiodun Falake, as his running mate and inaugurated the Prince Abubakar Audu Campaign (PAAC) organisation in Lokoja, the capital.

Speaking on his plan for the state, Audu said: “I will advance on the infrastructure and human developments that have been in ruin. Kogi was the fastest growing state when I was the governor, but the same story does not apply now.

“Kogi is the poorest and most backward state in the country. So, it is sort of a great concern to all of us. We are very sad about it. This is why it is imperative for me to come back and take the state out of the woods.”

  • Audu: I’m on rescue mission

    Audu: I’m on rescue mission

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu, has said he is in the race to rescue the state from underdevelopment.

Audu, who addressed reporters yesterday on his mission to the United Kingdom (UK), said Kogi had retrogressed since he left government 13 years ago.

He said there was need for the indigenes at home and abroad to salvage the state.

According to him, given the antecedents of his party in the states it governed, Kogi would attain development if the APC was voted into office.

Audu said youth development, employment generation, wealth creation and investment in infrastructure development would be his focus.

He said despite the huge allocation accruing to it, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government failed to make impact in the physical and human capital development.

The standard-bearer urged the people to support the APC, saying it would not disappoint them.

His words: “I assure you that our party will carry the day. We won previous elections, but we were denied the mandate. Things will be different this time with the card readers.

“My people in Kogi State, I will not disappoint you. I will never take your support for granted.”

  • Audu pledges power rotation for Okun, Ebira in 2019

Audu pledges power rotation for Okun, Ebira in 2019

Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the November 21 election, Prince Abubakar Audu, has pledged to support the Ebira and Okun ethnic nationalities for a power shift in 2019.

Audu restated his commitment to Kogi Tripatrite Agreement signed in 1991.

The agreement was a power rotation mechanism among the Igala, Ebira and Okun.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Media Office, the APC candidate noted that this would ensure peace and mutual understanding for power rotation.

The former governor recalled that it was the challenges of political domination and neglect of the Igala in Benue State, the Okun and the Ebira in Kwara State that led to agitation for the creation of Kogi State for the three groups, which had lived together peacefully under Kabba Province for over 70 years.

He said: “I have told Kogi residents that when we mutually met at Engineer Sule’s house in Okene, in 1991, the three groups – the Igala, Ebira and Okun – met and said they believed in power rotation.

“When God, in His infinite mercy, spoke to the former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, to create Kogi State, we have a destiny in our hands. It was only fair to allow the Igala to have the first shot. For that, the reason adduced by the late Chief Sunday Awoniyi was that the component that came from Benue State, that is, the Igala, had never had the opportunity to produce the governor. But the second component from Kwara State, comprising the Ebira and the Okun, had had the opportunity in the late Adamu Attah, who was a Second Republic Governor of Kwara State.

“On that premise, it was agreed that we give it to Igala. Further, after the Igala, it was agreed that the governorship seat should return to the other components – the Okun and the Ebira – who should meet to determine the next person to have the seat after the Igala.

“I am the first beneficiary of the agreement. Thank God, I am still hale and hearty because most of those who reached the deal in good faith on behalf of our people are late. When we returned to democracy in 1999, I was uncompromising and firm in my intention to implement the 1991 agreement. But I was blatantly rigged out. That, of course, stultified development of the state in all facets.”

  • Audu: EFCC looking for court to jail me

Audu: EFCC looking for court to jail me

Former Kogi State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the November 21 governorship election, Prince Abubakar Audu, yesterday accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of looking for a court to jail him for alleged corruption.

Audu was reacting to the protest by a group of youths from the state on his nomination as the APC governorship candidate.

The former governor said he needed to first clear himself with the EFCC before seeking their mandate.

He described the protesters as mischief makers, adding that people without electoral value were using cheap means to discredit him.

Audu said: “…The fact that you have a case with the EFCC does not make you a criminal. I have contested four different elections since 2007 and I was not disqualified. So, what are they talking about? I contested in 2003, 2007 and 2011. What are they talking about now?

“The case with the EFCC dates back to 2003. Since then, I have been contesting elections. It is those who do not have electoral values that are making noise and using cheap means to discredit me. It is an unfortunate situation.

“The EFFC has so far gone to four courts in Lokoja. When I wanted to get judgement, it went to another court and restarted the case. EFCC is shopping for where to nail me. This country’s constitution states that one is innocent until a court proves one guilty. They are mischief makers.”

The protesting youths said Audu should first clear himself of the N11 billion corruption charges with the EFCC before seeking to become governor again.

But the APC flag bearer noted that having a case with the EFCC had not made him a criminal.

Audu defeated 27 aspirants last Saturday in Lokoja, the state capital, to emerge the party’s governorship candidate.

Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai headed the party’s primary officials.

The former governor was initially denied the Certificate of Return on Tuesday by APC’s national secretariat on the grounds that the grace period allowed other aspirants to submit the petition against the conduct of the primary had not lapsed.

The party gave him the certificate yesterday in Abuja.

But while the presentation of the certificate was going on in the party’s conference room, the youth blocked the entrance to the secretariat, carrying placards and chanting anti-Audu slogans.

Some of the placards read: “Enough is really enough –Audu”; “Kogi State says no to Audu”; “Kogi wants total change”; “Kogi people says no to Audu”; “APC is all about change”; “APC, Kogi State says no to Audu”; “Audu, have mercy on Kogi State”, among others

Leader of the protesters, Suleiman Muhammad, told reporters that youths were against the party’s presentation of Audu as its candidate because of his case with EFCC.

Their leader said the matter was enough to disqualify him from the race.

He said: “We are here to protest against the candidature of Prince Abubakar Audu, under the platform of APC for the forthcoming governorship election in Kogi State. We say no to Abubakar Audu because he has N11 billion corruption case with the EFCC. Until he clears himself of the case, he has no moral right to present himself for an election.

“The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has declared war against corruption. We, the concerned citizens of Kogi State, support his anti-corruption move. We want to toe the line of APC’s change mantra and we will not support Audu because of his alleged corruption.”

APC’s National Organising Secretary Senator Osita Izunaso, who presented the certificate to Audu, said the party had not received any complaint on the conduct of the primary.

He hailed the aspirants for being good party men.

Izunaso said: “We began this process about four weeks ago with the screening of those who brought forms. There were 28 of them who bought forms. Fortunately for us, the 28 qualified to contest the primary. The committee, which conducted the primary, headed by Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rural, went to Kogi and conducted the best primary.

“The party is proud to announce that internal democracy has been given a pride of place. Without internal democracy, we cannot advance this internal democracy further. Charity must begin at home…”

  • Kogi 2015: Audu emerges APC candidate

•El-Rufai to PDP: pack your load

Prince Abubakar Audu yesterday emerged the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the November 21 governorship election.

He defeated 27 aspirants in a keenly- contested primary election.

Audu led by 1,109 votes, followed by Yahaya Bello (Fairplus), who polled 703. Senator Abatemi Usman came third with 400 votes.

The primaries at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja started at noon on Saturday when the accreditation of delegates began. Voting started at 8pm and ended at 5am yesterday. Counting of votes was concluded about 11am.

There were 3,458 delegates, with 3,044 screened and accredited for the primary election under a seven-man Electoral Committee led by Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The governor hailed the aspirants for their commitment and urged them to support the winner, “who emerged from a free, fair and transparent election.”

Audu praised the Electoral Committee members for their transparency. He promised not to disappoint the party.

The APC standard-bearer hailed other aspirants for their “large heartedness” and his closest rival for his doggedness and commitment.

Embracing Bello, Audu expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the primaries and thanked everybody, saying a lot had been achieved from the process.

He said: “I have realised that the age of Methuselah cannot be compared with the wisdom of Solomon. With this man (Bello), in the next four years, the party and Kogi State have nothing to fear.”

Bello said the election was transparent, free and fair. He promised that they would close ranks in the interest of the party.
