    Newstap-SWAN set to unveil recipients of Five Star Sports Award

    Organisers of the forthcoming maiden Newstap / SWAN Five Star Sports Award said they will  next week  announce names of eminent Nigerians that will receive their first award.

    They stated this after reaching an agreement on the modalities to be used in selecting  nominees for the award aimed at recognizing five eminent Nigerians that have contributed to the development of the country’s sports ecosystem.

    According to them, the award will not only be  unique but different from similar awards which prompted them to limit it to only five persons.

    “The award we want to organise will be a unique one. It’s not going to be an all comers affair because we were  meticulous in our selection. Those to be honoured have been carefully nominated and they are credible Nigerians doing well for our sports. By the time their names are announced, Nigerians will be proud with our choice of awardees,” they said.

    Speaking on the award, the National President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Isaiah Benjamin explained that the body decided to partner with Newstap Communications because of its track record that is in line with the association’s vision of recognizing those that have contributed to the country’s sports development.

    “We at SWAN are happy to collaborate with Newstap Communication because they have a good track record and vision that aligns with our plans of recognizing those that have made immense contributions in uplifting the country’s sports.”

    In his remarks, Editor of Newstap Communication, Ifeanyi Eduzor, explained that the forthcoming award will be  the best of its kind in the history of sports award in the country because it will be devoid of politics and sentiments positing that it is an award that is bestowed purely on merit.

    The 2024 GMYT Africa Humanitarian Awards (GAH), with theme, “Against All Odds,” will address critical United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) essential for long-term growth and resilience in African businesses.

    Holding on December 7 in Lagos, it will celebrate leaders who foster economic prosperity, build resilient infrastructure, and drive collaborative solutions.

    Group Managing Director of GMYT Group, organisers of the awards, Dr Princess Oghene, said awardees are leaders who defy challenges and transform Africa’s business landscape.

    Dr Oghene noted that these goals align with the event’s mission to empower businesses and leaders in creating a positive legacy for future generations.

     She said the awards would spotlight SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

    President of Nigeria Labour Congress  (NLC), Joe Ajaero; former Labour Party governorship candidate for Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour; Dr Chima Anyaso, chair of Cades Group; Prince Adedapo Adelegan, chief executive officer of Celtron Nigeria; and lawyer and politician, Dr Surajudeen Basiru, are among personalities to be honoured this year.

    Others include Prof. Lere Baale, chief executive officer of Business School Netherlands International; former Beauty Queen, Lady Sylvia Nduka; Chief Executive Oficer of Seed Foundation, Rev Esther Ajayi (Iya Adura); and David Olurin, chief executive officer of Cardinal Torch Company.

    Speaking on the theme, Oghene said: African businesses face challenges that impact their longevity and success. “From limited access to funding to lack of structural support, African businesses struggle to build sustainable legacies.

    ‘GAH Awards seeks to address these issues, empowering leaders with tools, insight, and partnerships to create resilient enterprises that stay.”

    Panels will discuss strategies to build resilient businesses, legacy and succession planning, and creating enabling environments for growth.

    Key questions to be explored include: African businesses adopting critical systems to ensure long-term resilience, government policy fostering or hindering business sustainability and how businesses can develop succession plans to empower future generations.

    Zamfara, Ebonyi, Kaduna, Niger Govs bag democracy heroes award

    Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara); Francis Nwifuru(Ebonyi); Umar Mohammed Bago(Niger) and Uba Sani (Kaduna) have been honoured at the just concluded Democracy Heroes Award Africa in Abuja.

    Also recognised at the award ceremony were former Senate President Bukola Saraki; member representing Ikeja federal constituency of Lagos Hon. James Faleke and member representing Bichi Federal constituency, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi.

    Others were Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos; the national chairman Accord Party, Prof. Chris Imumolen, the Executive Secretary National Lottery Commission, Tosin Adeoju and host of others.

    It was part of events to mark the country’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

    The award also recognised entrepreneurs, business and entertainers whose contributions have helped in entrenching stability through job creation, youth empowerment and poverty alleviation measures.

    Democracy Hero’s Award is hosted by Face of Democracy Nigeria (FDN)

    Speaking shortly after receiving his award, Lawal, said it was worth celebrating that democracy is getting gradually institutionalised.

    He expressed hope that years to come will usher in multiple indices of growth both for democracy and good governance.

    The Project Director FDN, Olufunsho Ajagbonna aka Fajag while expressing satisfaction with the success of the award programme, said such recognition was to encourage those who are making significant contributions towards good governance and nation-building.

    He congratulated the award winners and encouraged them to continue placing their names on national history by their meaningful contributions towards national development.

    The event hosted by Bigmo of Wazobia FM and Dorkong featured electrifying performances from cultural troupes.

    Association of Medical and Dental Officers (AMDO) in Oyo State has conferred Distinguished Personality Award on the Chairman, Oyo State Hospitals Management Board (OYSHMB), Dr. Akin Fagbemi.

    The award recognises Fagbemi’s leadership and contributions to the health care sector.

    Presenting the award at this year’s Non-Elective Annual General Meeting with the theme: ‘Security Harzard; A National Epidemic: Doctors as an Endangered Species’, AMDO Chairman in the state, Dr. Solomon Olaoye, hailed Fagbemi’s innovative approaches to health care management, citing improvements in primary health care services, infrastructure development and workers’ welfare.

    Fagbemi thanked AMDO for the honour, dedicating the award to Governor Seyi Makinde and health care team in Oyo State.

    Under Fagbemi’s leadership, OYSHMB has recorded milestones, earning recognition from local and national health care stakeholders.

    He thanked Governor Makinde for his magnanimity and support for doctors, saying the role doctors played in health care delivery could not be overemphasised.

    The Coalition of Nigeria Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA) has honoured Bello Oluwasina Opeyemi, CEO/Director of Toppy De Autos, with the title of Icon of Security Ambassador 2024.

    This recognition was awarded to Opeyemi for his unwavering advocacy and active participation in enhancing security and safety within his community.

    The announcement of Opeyemi’s recognition was made in a statement jointly signed by him and CONYSSA’s Director General, Amb Ade Mario Emmanuel.

    The statement highlighted Opeyemi’s collaborations with various security organizations and his leadership in implementing strategic measures to combat insecurity in his area.

    “Through his humanitarian services, he has supported numerous youths in their careers and provided scholarships to some”, the statement said.

    Philanthropist and President of the SAM Empowerment Foundation, Dr. Aisha Achimugu, has been honored with the Champions Newspapers 2024 Philanthropist of the Year award.

    Ekiti State Governor,  Abiodun  Oyebanji, Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited(NNPCL), Mele Kyari and Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri are among personalities to be honoured at the Triangle Media International Award in London.

    The event is slated for May 17.

    The award is for few outstanding Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in their areas of endeavour.

    Seasoned academics, Prof. Ojo Emmanuel Ademola and Dr Nathaniel Oyinloye will deliver a lecture ‘Security Challenges as test of statehood in Nigeria’.

    Adebayo bags award from Canada, Ontario govts

    The Federal Government of Canada and the State of Ontario in Canada have honoured one of Nigeria’s church leaders, Prophet Olusegun Joshua Adebayo, for his impactful role in the society and being an example to young people in Africa.

    Prophet Adebayo is the founder of Christ Apostolic World End-Time Revival Ministry (CAWERM).

    The award from Canada was facilitated by Rev. Dr Olu Aladejebi and his wife Evang Funmi Aladejebi.

     The couple came from Canada to present the award to the cleric.

    Barely two weeks after the honour from Canada, the African Students Union also gave a lifetime leadership award to Prophet Adebayo.

    The leadership of the union which were drawn from about seven countries in Africa presented the award to the cleric in his Lagos Church.

    Commenting on the awards from Canada, Aladajebi gave an account of how he facilitated the award for Prophet Adebayo.

    According to him, it was the good works of Prophet Adebayo and the great impact he has made over the years in the lives of many people known to him that made him push for the honour from Canada.

    He said that was the only way he could  pay him back for his sacrifices and love for humanity over the years.

    Aladejebi said at the presentation: “We thank God for what God is doing through our father. We experienced the miracle of God in his life. Our day of testimony is coming. My wife and I thought of what do to appreciate our father for his great impact in our lives and the society in general. 

    ‘We don’t have money. Even if we give him money, it will be exhausted.. My wife and I wrote to the federal government of Canada and also to the Ontario State government. We narrated a lot of things we experienced and the touch of God we received. And we asked that they be recognised in the country of Canada and state of Ontario.’

    “The state government and Federal government have approved the recommendation. It is to appreciate the church of God and for the glory of God. Not all churches have such privilege. We give glory and honour to God who gave us the privilege to be able to do this. You are well recognised throughout the world.”

    He said further that the awards are a testimony to the cleric’s unwavering commitment and timeless effort in impacting his community. The Federal Government of Canada through the House of Common is hereby presenting a Lifetime achievement award of global missionary work to you. We look forward to witnessing your continued influence on community. We like to extend our wishes for the continued success of your future endeavour.”

    The representatives of the African Students, Antony Manyara while presenting their award to Prophet Adebayo noted that he has lifted many young people.

    Manyara who is East African Students Union President and also President of Kenya Students Union  said, “We are here to thank you, encourage you and position you as example to others.  We watch your service a lot in East Africa. We wish you come to establish more branches of your Church in East Africa more than West Africa.

    “This award is being presented for your good works, for building men and building Africa. The youth of Africa have benefited a lot from you. We have the challenge of young people going astray. If we can learn from your person, African youth will do well. The president, Osisiogu Osikenyi has given me the grace to present this instrument of gratitude for your selfless contribution to the progress of Africa”

    Responding to the awards from Canada, Adebayo thanked the facilitators and expressed gratitude for the recognition.

    He expressed willingness to continue to project right values and impacting more lives.

    While responding to the award from African students, he expressed appreciation to God for being an African.

    He said: “I bless God that I am an African. All over the world, apart from children of Israel, Africa is the most blessed continent. The West are using our resources to prosper. China came to limelight through Africa. The seat of God is in Africa. God speaks to me concerning Africa and the youths.”

    He appreciated God for the life of the African students while making a prophetic declaration that one of them would become a president. 

    His words, “I give God glory for your life. One of you will become the president of your country. It is not of the flesh, it is of the spirit. One of you will become president”

    He said further: “God spoke to me that he wants to endow the youths in Africa. God told me many things will be discovered in Africa that will be of global benefit. God said to me Africa will begin to invent some technology that will be different from that of the West.”

    Adebayo recalled an invention by a Zimbabwean and how the West is trying to frustrate the invention. 

    He warned that some people are after the life of the inventor because they believe nothing good can come from Africa.

    He urged young people in Africa to rise and support the cause of technology and give a backing to the Zimbabwean that came up with the unique invention on car and aircraft that do not use fuel.

    The cleric also used the opportunity to campaign against Big Brother Africa programme asking that the programme be replaced with a pro-technology programme that will be of huge benefit to humanity. 

    “God told me that he has deposited knowledge in Africa. I want to encourage you to move around African countries and discover youths that have technological knowledge.

    ‘ Youths of African rise for this. Presidents of Africa should stop embezzling the continent’s wealth. Any country that has resources should rather plan to maximise the resources”

    Other award received by Prophet Adebayo was the Africa Heritage Award early in the year.

    The facilitator of the award, Mr Damilola Akingbagbihun who unfortunately has passed on described Adebayo as an inspiration to the African continent.

    He noted that the cleric is proudly African, always putting on African attire during his public engagements.

    Reverend Uma Ukpai, president of Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA) has won The Sun Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023.

     The event, led by Chairman of the newspaper’s Award Ceremony, Secretary to Government of the Federation, George Akume,  was attended by governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and media representatives.

     Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Ukpai spoke about his initial surprise on learning about his nomination.

    He noted the award was an acknowledgment of divine intervention in human affairs. Acknowledging the role of the media, Ukpai underscored the responsibility of the media in monitoring actions and promoting social welfare.

    The cleric thanked The Sun’s Board of Editors for the recognition. Rev. Ukpai, surrounded by his wife and association, prayed for Nigeria.
