    Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc (STI) and its Managing Director, Olaotan Soyinka, have won the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Company of the Year and Insurance Man of the Year for 2017 awards.

    It was all at the Business-Today Online Media Awards.

    The event, which was held at the Lagos Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos was chaired by Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, chairman, Mutual Benefits Group.

    Others at the event included the Acting Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom) and Chairman, Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA).  The nomination for the Insurance Man of the Year Award, according to the organisers of the event, was  open to the insuring public and other stakeholders done via voting in the social media.

    The award is in recognition of chief executives of underwriting and pension firms  who contribute to the growth of the sector, while the CSR Award is given to underwriting firms, pension organisations and other financial institutions which enhance and improve the quality of life and infrastructure in their indusries.

    In his response, Soyinka promised to work for the growth of insurance.  He said the company will not rest on its oars in upholding professionalism and adherence to corporate governance, adding that it will maintain the position of a responsible corporate entity to further project the industry.

  • Dana Air wins award

    Dana Air has emerged the Best Customer Friendly Domestic airline in 2018 at a summit and award ceremony organised by the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria (AFARN) in Lagos.

    Dana Air also pledged to support one of the recipients of the Integrity award who appealed for support at the event, as part of the airline’s strong commitment towards the well-being of Nigerians and encouraging honesty and integrity among not just aviation workers but Nigerians in general.

  • BASF, PSN launch ‘Young Female Pharmacist of the Year’ award

    BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, has announced the launch of this year’s “Young Female Pharmacist of the Year” awards for BASF West Africa.

    The award is in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), the umbrella body of licensed pharmacists in Nigeria with membership strength of over 25,000 pharmacists in manufacturing, academia, hospitals, retail and research industries.

    The pioneering awards programme is an open and competitive process to only women pharmacists between 25 and 35 years old who are registered in Nigeria.

    Applicants can be drawn from manufacturing, academia and/or public research institutes and they may be nominated or elect to apply themselves, the organisers said.

    At the inauguration of the awards programme with the committee, which has validated and assessed the entries, the Managing Director of BASF West Africa, Dr. Jean-Marc Ricca said: “This awards programme will serve as an incentive for innovation and scientific excellence in Nigeria as we honour women who have shown exceptional commitment and have made extraordinary achievements in their scientific fields.

    “…We hope to contribute our quota to the achievement of Sustainability Development Goals 4 and 5, which relate to quality education and gender equality respectively.”

    Ms. Sharmila Govind, Head of Human Resources for Market Area Africa, applauded the initiative, being the one that speaks closely to the rewards and recognition scheme of BASF.

    She said: “I am very excited about this because the topic of women in leadership is one that is close to my heart. With this kind of initiative, I hope we see more women step into the limelight and grow in their careers.”

    Also, PSN’s President Ahmed Yakasai expressed delight at BASF’s intervention.

    He urged the union members to use the opportunity well.

    Yakasai advised the selection committee, led by a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and fellow of the PSN, Prof Mbang Femi-Oyewo, to discharge its duties judiciously and present candidates the society will be proud of.

    The finalists will be announced and awards will be presented at PSN’s annual conference in October.

     

  • Award for Stanbic IBTC

    Stanbic IBTC Bank has been named the “Best Sub-Custodian” in Nigeria for the year by Global Finance magazine.

    The London-based Global Finance magazine, organiser of the awards, announced winners for the 16th World’s Best Sub-custodian Banks following selection from across seven global regions and more than 80 countries.

    The latest win makes it the eighth time in a row that Stanbic IBTC Bank will be adjudged the best in the country, in recognition of its leadership in the sector.

    Stanbic IBTC Bank Chief Executive, Demola Sogunle, said winning the award consistently for the last eight years reinforces the bank’s strong management, systems and innovative solutions, and its leadership of Nigeria’s custody sector.

    “We are delighted to be recognised for the eighth time as the best provider of custody services in Nigeria. It is a demonstration of our strength in terms of our management, systems and solutions. This award will energise us to continue to provide unparalleled services to our customers as we raise the bar in the provision of investor services,” Sogunle said.

    According to him, the need for excellent custody services in Nigeria remains strong, driven by the impetus in cross-border investment activities and Stanbic IBTC Bank is well positioned to provide such services.

    The yearly award, instituted 16 years ago, recognises the pivotal role sub-custodians play in business and investment activities through the safekeeping of clients’ assets, such as bonds, stocks and treasury bills. Winners are selected by Global Finance magazine’s editors and reporters, with input from expert sources, from among institutions that reliably provide the best custody services in local markets, regions and to global custodians.

    The criteria used, according to Global Finance, included technology platforms, competitive pricing, customer relations, smooth handling of exception items, technology platforms, quality of service, post-settlement operations, business continuity plans and knowledge of local regulations and practices. Global Finance said it also obtained input from users of sub-custody services. Performance was judged over the period covering January 1 through last December 31.

    Publisher and Editorial Director Global Finance, Joseph Giarraputo noted as custodians deal with increased liability from new regulatory requirements, they are seeking the safest and best sub-custodians with whom to entrust client assets.

    “With these awards, we recognize those sub-custodians that do the best job of meeting their clients’ needs in increasingly complex markets,” Giarraputo stated.

    Stanbic IBTC Nominees Limited Chief Executive Akeem Oyewale, said the company will not rest on its oars in delivering value to customers as well as prospects.

  • Award winning film unfolds Niger Delta’s challenges

    The film Future World made by Nigeria Wilfred Ukpong has exposed the challenges of the Niger Delta region according to Senate President Bukola Saraki.

    It won the ‘Eco-Tourism’ category in the International Tourisms Borse Berlin’s Golden City-Gate Film Festival award.

    After the film’s screening before the audience, the senate president observed that the message in the film is “quite clear and apt.”

    He added: “it is an early warning of the impending danger in the Niger Delta; all the stakeholders must take it seriously.”

    Saraki, who was represented by Senate Spokesman Sabi Abdullahi,  said Nigerians have a responsibility to what is happening in Niger Delta as captured in the film adding however that “we must congratulate the government of Buhari for the initiatives of starting the clean up of the Niger Delta, beginning with the Ogoni land.”

    While presenting the trophy to Ukpong in Abuja at the weekend, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany Yusuff Maitama Tuggar, noted that “Future World” is a piece of work that provokes discussions around some of the most topical issues of the day: environmental pollution and climate change, youth employment and migration, energy mix and international trade,” adding that the Nigerian government is already taking a good step to finding permanent solutions to the challenges.

    Ukpong, a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker, said “the seven-minute film narrative conflates around climate change, environmental pollution, and health-related issues and draws from true-life stories, and regional myths to create a captivating abstract universe pulsing with some of the most profound historical, ecological, and socio-cultural issues of our time.”  He noted that it was produced to further raise the awareness on the level of degradation in the oil producing area, and calls for urgent solutions.

  • Akeredolu’s wife gets award for breast cancer advocacy

    A WIFE of Ondo State governor Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has been given a high level recognition award for her effort at raising awareness on breast cancer challenge among women.

    She got the recognition at the Global Health Catalyst (GHC) summit at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States of America.

    The GHC is a premier yearly event designed to catalyse high impact international collaboration to eliminate global health disparities with main focus on cancer and related diseases.

    Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu has recorded great achievements on the global challenge of breast cancer and the need to make women realise the fact that breast cancer ailment is not a death knell.

    She said women should talk about it collectively, and patients must resolve not to die of the ailment.

    The SO&U Mother’s Day advertising campaign which went viral in March has won a Gold Prize Award at the African Cristal Festival in Marrakech, Morocco.

    The campaign, which profiled Nigerian mothers and their “secret weapons,” recorded over two million shares across social media with zero promotion.

    It had also received wide commendation from industry experts and Nigerians at large received Gold from the international panel of judges who highlighted its unique ingenuity not just to the Nigerian home but Africa at large.

  • Daniel gets African Hall of Fame Award

    Former National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) Commissioner for Insurance,  Fola Daniel has won the African Insurance Hall of Fame Award.

    The event took place during the gala night to mark the end of 45th AIO conference in Accra, Ghana.

    Daniel defeated two other nominees to emerge winner.

    The third African insurance Hall of Fame award generated much suspense across the continent following the quality of nominees and the award panel.

    The panel focused on the contributions of nominees to African insurance.

    According to the panel, nominees must have contributed to insurance, broking, reinsurance, and regulatory.

    They must exert influence on the ability of the industry to serve the society and be recognised by their peers.

    Daniel, a veteran underwriter, studied in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London, the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (FIIN) and, the British Institute of Management.

    Prior to his appointment as Commissioner for Insurance in 2007, he was appointed by the Federal Government as Executive Director (Operations) of Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation.
