Awujale stool: Govt halts selection process

Armed security operatives drawn from the Police, Department of State Service (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun and So-Safe Corps yesterday beefed up security along Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Archway, leading to the Ijebu-Ode palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland, over concerns that some powerful interests planned to infiltrate the meeting of the kingmakers in a location within the facility and foist a candidate on them.

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House leaders – Otunba Lateef Owoyemi (Olori Ebi), Prince Adedokun Ajidagba (Deputy Olori- Ebi), Prof. Fassy Yusuf (Vice Chairman) and others had on Monday submitted the list bearing names of the 95 nominees (candidates) to the kingmakers, who were expected to meet at the palace to begin the process of selecting one candidate out of the 95 nominees, but security operatives were sighted manning the entrance.

However, a letter by the Ogun State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, dated January 20, 2026 directed the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to halt further steps on the selection process until further notice, for the second time.

“The state government hereby directs that you convey this decision to the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House immediately. The latter particularly, should be advised to await further directives regarding the selection process,” the letter read in part.

Commissioner for Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, who signed the letter and addressed it to Ijebu Ode Local Government chairman, cited security concern and the need to protect public order and the integrity of the stool as reasons for the decision.

“The state government has received several petitions, reports from security agencies and other key stakeholders in relation to the ongoing selection process. In order to maintain public order, protect the integrity of the process and maintain the veneration of the stool, it has become imperative to halt the selection process for the stool at this time,” he said.

I’m not going to talk about the person the family supports now because you saw us nominating 95 of them… We support one of them.

“So, we are hopeful that the Kingmakers and the government select the best person for us. And we know they will not make any mistake.”

Ijebu group canvasses Rep Kuye as next Awujale

The Ijebu Leadership Foundation has called for the appointment of a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, Ademorin Alliu Kuye, as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

The call came as the Ijebu Traditional Council commences the process of selecting a new Awujale following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled Ijebuland for 65 years.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the coordinator of the group, Keshiro Sulayman OluwaSesan, said Kuye, who represents the Somolu Federal Constituency of Lagos State in the House of Representatives, possesses the requisite qualities to occupy the revered traditional stool.

According to him, Kuye was born and raised within the royal tradition and was groomed under the mentorship of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, whom he described as a ruler of outstanding reputation and integrity.

“Throughout history, destiny and cultures have often placed the King at the center of the universe, not desperation and unnecessary social media full of propaganda. From him radiated all of existence.

“The ancient king represented the spiritual centre of the realm, as the intermediary between heaven and earth. Through his divine powers, the king brought order to the universe by reconciling opposite forces. Myths abound of kings battling evil demonic creatures and establishing order in chaos.

“One of the functions of an ancient king was to bless those whom they led. As intermediaries between the gods and earth, the king had the power to bless his people so that they might prosper, just as the late Awujale Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona did to Omoba Ademorin Kuye.

“In the Holy Spiritual Books, both the Qur’an and the Bible, we can read several accounts of the great patriarchs leaving a father’s blessing on their posterity before dying.

“We often associate ‘blessing’ with a religious act. While a man certainly accesses the King archetype by giving a father’s blessing to his children, just like Jacob and Isaac did, he can also bless others around him in other ways that aren’t necessarily religious.

“Simply recognizing and honouring others for their achievements is a way we can bless others. As we get older, we think we can take for granted the power that a kind word can have on a young person’s life. That’s the power of blessing in action, which uplifts and edifies others.

“Hon Prince Otunba Ademorin Alliu Kuye was well mentored, fortified, and blessed by his grandfather, who was a King from the Fusengbuwa and the immediate past Awujale of Ijebuland, late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona GCON, Anikilaya 1, Ogbagba II, Awujale Akile-Ijebu, which dignifies Prince Ademorin Kuye apart from his noble royal birth from two ruling houses among the four ruling houses in Ijebuland and among the other contestants for the stool of Awujale of Ijebuland.

“Young men today are starving for blessing from older men, starving for blessing from the King energy. This is why they cannot, as we say, “get it together.

“They can’t be mixing a political contest and unnecessary social media with a culturally oriented and traditional contest. They need to be oriented, educated, mentored, and blessed.

“They need to be seen by the King, not read about kings in a published book or national newspaper, because if they are, something inside will come together for them. That is the effect of blessing; it heals and makes whole. That’s what happens when we are seen and valued and concretely rewarded for our legitimate talents and abilities.

“Unlike a king who creates and blesses others, the Tyrant seeks to destroy and tear down. Plagued by narcissism and desperation, he really does think that he sits at the centre of the universe. The Tyrant wrongly believes that power is finite; he has a scarcity mentality. He doesn’t understand the truth–that power and influence actually increase the more you share them with others.

“Thus, the burden of maintaining his fragile illusion of absolute power makes him very insecure; any threat to his authority and supremacy enrages him and causes him to lash out with abuse–physically, emotionally, or mentally.

“When the Tyrant isn’t viewing others as a threat and putting them in their place, he sees them as objects to exploit for his own gain; he is willing to push his friends, family, and employees under the bus to further his goals. We see the Tyrant manifest itself in this manner when businessmen further their own career at the expense of the people under their stewardship,” he said.

He said further thatIon Kuye was mentored by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he served as Local Government Chairman when he (Tinubu) was Governor of Lagos State. He also served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the state.

Kuye, the chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, is one of the ranking Members in the 10th House of Representatives.

“We want to specially appeal to the Ilamuren of Ijebuland (the Afobajes), Ijebu-Ode Local Government Authority, Ogun State Government, and the good people of Ijebuland and nation, to please consider Omoba Ademorin Alliu Kuye, a dynamic progressive and core Ijebu Ambassador with values, full with meek and humility, a high sense of humour, and tremendous integrity that commands both international and national honour and respect, as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

“As we grow older, wiser, and more in touch with the King’s characteristics, it is our responsibility as noble men to bless and assist younger men on their path to mature masculinity.

“We can also bless others by becoming a mentor because one of the reasons so many young men are struggling today is because they lack positive mentoring from great older men,” the statement said.

He said that posterity won’t forget the role played by every individual involved in the Awujale selection process.

Awujale succession not by self proclamation, says Omooba Abimbola Onabanjo

Nobody should refer to themselves or others as Awujale-elect in the ongoing conversations surrounding the revered Awujale stool, an aspirant Omooba Abimbola Onabanjo has declared.

He counseled supporters of all aspirants including his own to observe restraint and uphold respect for sacred traditional procedures.

His media team quoted him as saying that no individual should refer to themselves or anybody as Awujale-elect because doing so undermines the established selection processes and trivializes the sacred nature of the throne.

He also clarified for the record that he is not Awujale-elect and has never described or presented himself as such.

Omooba Onabanjo expressed deep appreciation for the goodwill endorsements and organic promotions that have continued to trail his name from well meaning sons and daughters of Ijebuland.

He acknowledged that many have supported him out of personal knowledge of who he is through testimonials from others or from what they have observed through his foundation.

He also acknowledged that many have in recent days compared him to the Olu of Warri,  citing posture, comportment and youthfulness.

He stated that while he appreciates the love and admiration behind such comparisons, it would be better if they stop out of respect for the established throne of Olu of Warri and to avoid unnecessary projections across royal institutions.

He stated that he is humbled and grateful to everyone posting, speaking or promoting him based on what they know firsthand or through what they have heard or seen.

He, however appealed that nobody should call him Awujale-elect  or Awujale in waiting or any similar designation.

He emphasized that the Awujale can only emerge through the time-honored process involving selection by the ruling house and approval by the Ogun State Government.

“No individual or group can announce or confer such status outside these established procedures.”

He stressed that this clarification has become necessary so that enthusiasm and excitement do not lead the public to trivialize the revered throne of the Awujale or trample on the sacred position and responsibilities of the kingmakers.

He reminded the public that the responsibility at this time is to pray for the ruling house that God and the ancestors will guide them to make the right choice for the future of Ijebuland.

The statement ended with prayers for the land and its leadership asking that Ijebuland continue to prosper that Ogun State may flourish and that her people may enjoy peace progress and unity along with prayers for wisdom for the Governor as he continues to steer the affairs of the state.

JUST IN: Heavy security in Ijebu-Ode as Fusengbuwa ruling house begins nomination process for next Awujale

There was a heavy security on Monday at the Bisirodipe Hall in GRA, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, as the Fusengbuwa ruling House commenced its nomination process to select the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

Dozens of operatives drawn from the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were stationed within and around the venue ahead of the exercise, which was scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon.

The hall premises were crowded with members of the ruling house, including the head, Otunba Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, delegates, observers, and residents keen to follow the proceedings. Security personnel had difficulty managing individuals who lacked entry clearance or could not justify their presence.

A group believed to be supporters of Fuji musician and Olori Omooba of Ijebuland, Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM 1), also arrived at the gate but were denied access for not having the required pass.

Ayinde has recently raised concerns over alleged attempts by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to exclude him from the selection process.

In a petition to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the musician, who is said to belong to the Fidipote Ruling House, alleged that the family had taken steps contrary to the Chieftaincy Declaration and the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State.

His allegations were captured in a letter dated January 8, 2026, issued by his counsel, Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN.

The claims followed an earlier suit filed at the Ogun State High Court in Ijebu Ode, where Ayinde sought to halt the process.

The court declined to grant an interim injunction, and he later withdrew the case without explanation.

The nomination process is resuming after an earlier suspension, with the Fusengbuwa Ruling House directed by the Ijebu Ode Local Government—through a letter dated January 6, 2026—to conclude the exercise within 14 days.

Ayinde said he was taken aback when the family’s Public Relations Officer, Prince Adeleye Lateef Ademuyiwa, issued a notice directing aspirants to obtain nomination cards and appear before a screening committee, scheduling the exercise for Monday, January 12, 2026.

Scores of princes have indicated interest in succeeding the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away at 91 on July 13, 2025, after a 65-year reign.

The letter read, “It is a matter of deep concern to our client that all these directives, which contravene the Chieftaincy Declaration, Obas and Chiefs Law, and the letter from the Secretary of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, were included in the family’s letter dated January 6, 2026.

“It is clear that there are plans by the leadership of the ruling house to disenfranchise members desirous of participating in the nomination of candidates for the Awujale stool.

“We wish to emphasize that all members of the ruling house are entitled to attend the meeting to nominate candidates of their choice.

“A group of people in the ruling house cannot usurp these rights. The directive providing for screening and nomination by delegates is inconsistent with both the spirit and letter of the Chieftaincy Declaration and the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State 2021.

“In the interest of justice and compliance with due process, we urge timely intervention to address these concerns, ensuring the integrity of the process and protecting our client’s rights.”

Fuji music star and Olori Omooba of Ijebuland, Wasiu Ayinde, aka KWAM 1, has expressed concern about perceived moves by Fusengbuwa Ruling House to exclude him from the nomination process for the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

He alleged that the ruling house, which is next in line to produce the new Awujale, has been taking decisions that run contrary to the Chieftaincy Declaration, Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State.

In a letter written to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, KWAM 1, who is said to be from Fidipote Ruling House, claimed Fusengbuwa House was sidelining him from the ongoing selection process for the next Awujale.

Fusengbuwa Ruling House resumes nomination process today in Ijebu Ode, the headquarters of Ijebu Ode Local Government, after an initial halt to the process.

Several princes were said to have indicated their intention to succeed the last Awujale, the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who joined his ancestors at 91 on July 13, 2025 after 65 years reign on the throne.

KWAM1’s allegations of exclusion were contained in a letter dated January 8, 2026, sent to Governor Abiodun by the musician’s lawyer, Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN.

Earlier, he had approached Ogun State High Court in Ijebu Ode seeking an interim injunction to restrain Governor Abiodun and six others from proceeding with the selection process, but the court declined the request.

The musician eventually withdrew the suit without providing explanations.

He said he was surprised to know that while the family members were preparing for the meeting, Prince Adeleye Ademuyiwa, the family’s spokesman, issued a notice directing candidates to collect nomination cards and appear before a screening committee.

KWAM1 noted that the directive scheduled the nomination exercise for Monday, January 12, 2026.

The letter said: “It is a matter of deep concern to our client that all these directives, which contravene the Chieftaincy Declaration, Obas and Chiefs Law, and the letter from the Secretary of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, were included in the family’s letter dated January 6, 2026.
