    Comedian AY Makun accuses people requesting money from him of lacking conscience

    Popular stand-up comedian and filmmaker, AY Makun has said that those requesting money from him during this period lack conscience. 

    The seasoned entertainer made the statement in a post he shared on his Instagram page.

    Recall that The Nation reported some months ago, that AY Makun had gone through an emotional roller coaster after he lost his multi-million naira home to a destructive fire that razed all the property in the house.

    With the festive period fast on the heels of people, AY Makun submits that he is tempted to say that anyone who asks for money lacks conscience or fear of God.

    His words read: “I am just tempted to say that everybody asking me for money during this period does not have a conscience or lacks the fear of God. E get why”.

    His comment section was flooded with his statement, below are some reactions:

    Popular comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has disclosed how his rise to stardom was nothing but a prayer backed with hard work. 

    The father of two narrated his career trajectory in the latest episode of the TokeMoments podcast hosted by media personality, Toke Makinwa, noting that he has been in the entertainment industry for 25 years.

    He said he began his career as a show promoter, organising a campus beauty pageant at his alma mater, Delta State University, Abraka.

    According to the actor, before leaving backstage, he produced candidates who participated in the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant and represented Nigeria at Miss World.

    AY noted that he worked as the Assistant Pageant Manager for Miss Commonwealth and was also a Personal Assistant (PA) to veteran Nigerian comedian, Alibaba, praying to be as famous as him one day.

    He said: “I was working with the king of comedy, Alibaba, as his assistant, and we used to travel everywhere. At the airport, people wanted to take pictures with Alibaba. There I was with my small bag, grabbing his phone. I didn’t see it coming, but I prayed for it. Then, it was just a prayer point backed with hard work.”

    I’m not among top 10 funniest comedians in Nigeria – AY Makun

    Stand-up comedian and filmmaker Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY, has revealed that he doesn’t classify himself as top 10 funniest Nigerian comedians.

    He made the assertion in a recent interview with Toke Makinwa, where he told his detractors that stand-up comedy isn’t just about being funny.

    He noted that finding a specialty and building a dedicated fan base had helped him succeed and make a living.

    AY emphasised that his success does not require him to honour critics who consider him more humorous than he is.

    He further declared that he wouldn’t consider himself among Nigeria’s top ten funniest comedians.

    “So people should understand that it’s not about who knows it best; I have my own fanbase; does my work put food on the table for my family? Yes, deal with it. 

    “That I am doing well doesn’t mean I do not respect the other person that you respect—that you claim is more talented, and I would accept it wholeheartedly.” “I even tell people that if you ask me to name 10 funniest comedians in Nigeria, I won’t put my name,” he said.

    I found out about my burnt house on social media – AY Makun

    Popular Comedian and actor, AY Makun, has recalled how the news of his house on fire reached him via social media. 

    The Nation reported that the comedian’s house was gutted by a fire in August 2023.

    Featuring on the Toke Moments podcast, the renowned comic narrated the series of incidents that led to the discovery of his house fire.

    He said he was on tour in Canada and was completely unaware his house was on fire back home.

    He said: “I woke up and i saw about 78 missed calls and I didn’t know what was going on. So I woke up to these calls and I knew something has happened, so the first thing that I saw when I opened my phone was my house on fire on Instablog, that’s how I found out. I was in Canada on a tour at the time.”

    Makun, who saw the fire as a blessing, said although, materials were lost lives were preserved.

    He said the day the fire occurred, his wife and kids were out of the country so when he makes jokes about the fire, it’s him being thankful to God.

    In his words: “That was my point of thanksgiving, knowing fully well that my family was on holidays. So when people see me and people are like ‘He’s still doing what he does best’ I say it’s my thanksgiving because will I be talking about a house that is aflame or the set of thing that got burnt in that house if I lose my family? No. I would be devastated, gone and a living corpse, so my thanksgiving is that we were all away.”

    Makun further clarified that the fire was caused by an electrical appliance and it started from the top floor of the building.

    AY via his post on Instagram reminisced about the struggles, beautiful moments, and experiences that have shaped their love life.

    He wrote: “It’s been 20 amazing years of knowing each other, 15 years of marital hustle and bustle, occasional sweetness and bitterness, pains, and gains.

    “We thank God for the unconditional love and grace that have kept us standing and counting all these years of celebration.

    “On this, our first 15-year anniversary, I wish us both more love, strength, patience, tolerance, and happiness to celebrate many more 15-year anniversaries together. I love you.”

    Nollywood actor and comedian, AY Makun has decried the state of the economy in Nigeria, saying that he doesn’t know when Nigeria will be better again.

    The father of two said via his Instagram page that he grew up hearing that Nigeria would be better, adding that things are actually growing worse in the country even now that he is in his fifties.

    AY went on to ask how many people make enough money to meet their basic needs.

    His post reads: “Nigeria go better us what one grew up hearing. I’m still hearing it in my fifties. What kind of Groundhog Day existence do we live in in this country though? The more things seem to change, they remain the same.”

    Captioning the post, AY Makun wrote: “How many of us do have wages more than sufficient enough to cover the bare cost of living in Nigeria?”
