  • So much to behold at AY Live Easter show

So much to behold at AY Live Easter show

BY 7:00pm Easter Sunday, the roads leading to Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, were clogged with vehicles in traffic jams. The surge of crowd were headed nowhere but to watch AY Live at the Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel.

The show, hosted by popular on-air-personality, Freeze, started at about 9:00pm, over two hours behind schedule. And with about 6, 000 attendees, all seats were fully occupied, and some attendees had to stand throughout the show. Sponsored by Maltina, a brand of Nigerian Breweries Limited, the event’s theme, ‘Complete Happiness’ which is in line with Maltina’s tag line of ‘Happiness’, featured a long line of artistes, including dancers, musicians and comedians to do just one thing  create fun.

Immediately after a serenading session by the Veentage Band, the show kicked off with a mock performance of the result announcement for the recently-concluded presidential election. Actors mimicked the sign language interpreter and electoral officers of Kano and Rivers States (the two states with the most surprising result margins for the big political parties  APC and PDP) while AY played the role of the electoral umpire. In a seemingly brief dialogue, AY receives a telephone call and blurts, “I cannot rig it” which generated peals of laughter from the crowd. The ensemble was made complete with an actor playing Elder Godswill Orubebe’s role in the election process.

Then came the entrée  AY and Helen, clad in soutane, depicting a religious prophet and prophetess. Closely following this was Explicit, an Ibadan-based dance group also put up an energetic performance, including a well-coordinated acrobatic sync.

However, given that AY-Live thrives on comedies, the show featured the likes of Helen Paul, Princess, Acapella, Laff Up, Ushbebe, Gordons, Ajebo (comedian and OAP), MC Shakara and MC Galaxy. Few areas were sacred as they made fun of everything – politicians, religious leaders, foreigners, attendees, and even themselves.

Other artistes present were Bovi, Okey Bakassi, Empress Njamah, Vector da Viper, Timaya, Funke Akindele, Jimmy Jatt, Korede Bello, Kiss Daniel, Brian Okpara, Osas Ighodaro, Ubi Franklin and Lilian Esoro.

President Goodluck Jonathan also got a standing ovation at a point in the show when AY said that the recent act by Jonathan in conceding defeat in the presidential election to his major rival, General Muhamadu Buhari, is responsible for the current peace the country is witnessing.

“The man look am come say, ‘If I allow my people go the other way, Nigeria go scatter,” AY said in pidgin English. “He say make I just do like Jesus Christ. And today na the resurrection day.”

Among musicians that also performed at the show was Onyeka Onwenu. The Elegant Stallion put an amazing outing, belting out tunes from her collection such as Iyogogo, which got sections of the attendees dancing. She was also sprayed with currency notes in appreciation by her admirers. It did not matter to her fans that spraying of naira notes is frowned against by the Nigerian Constitution. AY also prostrated as a sign of appreciation to the beautiful singer.

As the curtains wind down at about 2:00am and the crowd thronged out of the Convention Centre, there was little doubt that AY-Live, despite not ensuring ‘complete happiness’ it touted, had succeeded in bringing a dose of happiness.

    AY shows his ‘Warri-ness’

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) has come and gone but, snippets of the glamorous event will occupy social discourse for a while. JOE AGBRO JR. captured some of the remarkable moments.

In a bid to be distinctive, comedian, actor and debutant movie producer, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, could not resist showing his Warri, Delta State roots.

Receiving the New Era award for his contribution to the African film industry, AY, whose movie, 30 Days in Atlanta, is making waves, blurted loudly in Pidgin English, “Their father” which generated uproar across the hall.

While in the Queen’s English, the expression, “Their  father” is clear, however, in the Warri pidgin English, “Their father”, could refer to different things such as an abuse or to show triumph, depending on how stressed the word is.

While AY succeeded in turning the entrée of his speech into a joke, he attributed his win to “time and chance.” The comedian then thanked Richard Mofe Damijo “for being a vision helper.” He also thanked Ramsey Nouah, Desmond Elliot, Mercy Johnson, Ada Ameh and others.

AY was also rewarded with an Inner Circle Black watch from Chris Aire in addition to one million naira.

  • YouTube rates AY’s channel No.1 in Nigeria

YouTube rates AY’s channel No.1 in Nigeria

FOR many reasons, 2013 will go down as most memorable for leading stand-up comedian, AY.

This becomes more evident when the news broke recently that YouTube officially rated his Channel, www.youtube.com/AYTV, as the most-watched YouTube Channel in Nigeria.

At a media parley recently, AY explained the factors that must have contributed to his being honoured by YouTube.

He said: “First, we didn’t go out to be the number one most-watched, but we only re-defined. We gave our channel a personality. We wanted to be known for first-rate, timely and where-we-can-very- exclusive entertaining videos.

“Next, we deliberately upload interesting episodes of The AY Show which, in the first place, is seen only by TV audience. We didn’t stop at that. We also uploaded premium episodes of AY’s Crib just for a wider audience, who probably missed or will never get to meet up with the TV time of the programmes.

“Then, we quenched the thirsts of fans, followers and patrons of AY Live, who want to see performance videos of comedians and musicians at all our Live Concerts after every edition in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja and the UK.

“And then, we weren’t shy to upload all the comedy skits we shoot exclusively for the live shows. We just wanted a channel that would be a good alternative to entertainment on TV. And while we took stock of their mileage online, just then, YouTube came up with the top 10 listand we were number one.”

As at December 18, 2013, AY’s YouTube channel had 11, 053, 962 (Eleven million and fifty-three thousand, nine hundred and sixty- two) views to rank first.

It will be recalled that in 2013, he shot his first-own movie, 30 days in Atlanta; he won two awards at NaijaFM Comedy Awards (Comedy Event of the Year and Comedy TV Show of the Year).
