Ayade begins building of rice mill

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade has begun the building of a multimillion naira rice mill in Ogoja.

He said at the groundbreaking ceremony that the mill, the first of its kind in Africa to produce a vitaminised rice, would incorporate growth hormones for children between seven and 15 years and enhance their intellectual capacity.

Ayade said: “With the vitamins enhanced plant, specific vitamins and nutrients will be incorporated, the vitaminisation process of this mill will be a bigger business than selling the rice.”

He said despite that “the people of Ogoja are traditionally the number one rice growing people in the Southsouth, the rice cultivated in Ogoja ends up in other states.”

The governor added: “Indeed, it is our rice and we have come to stop taking our rice to somewhere else and adding it to the rice cultivation statistics of another state.”

He said the product, which would be called ‘Ogoja Rice’, would be packaged to reflect the identity and unity of the people “so that when our product gets to the market and you taste it, you will know it is very fresh.”

Explaining that the rice city in Calabar did not conflict with the mill in Ogoja, Ayade said the Calabar rice city was designed as a research centre for the production of a new hybrid of rice that would have high yield, high disease resistance and targeted at the production of seeds and seedlings.

Hailing President Muhammadu Buhari for his financial support to ensure that the project succeeds, the governor stressed that “Buhari has demonstrated that if Nigeria can be focused on rice production, we shall indeed, get out of the woods and our continued dependence on foreign rice will be a thing of the past.”

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Anthony Eneji, praised Ayade’s initiative, which he noted would stop the state’s dependence on outsiders for the processing of its grains.

Ayade inaugurates 134km dual carriage Cross River road

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade at the weekend inaugurated the construction work on a 134 kilometers Mfom-Okpoma-Imaje-Bekwarra-Obudu-Obanliku dual carriage road in the northern part of the state.

The road will re-energise and increase footfalls into the famous Obudu ranch resort and provide access to produce markets, according to government officials.

It is a federal road which traverses the five local government areas that constitute the Northern Senatorial District. The value of the project is N31 billion. The completion period is 30 months.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony attended by indigenes of Bekwarra, Yala, Ogoja, Obudu and Obanliku local government councils, Ayade described the event as “the beginning of a new journey in the history of the Northern Senatorial District which for 45 years has been denied the luxury of driving on good roads caused by the challenges of the times and circumstances not caused by our people.”

  • 2013 Eaglets beg Ayade for Calabar houses

Three years after they conquered the world in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) , the Golden Eaglets class of 2013 have again begged the incumbent  Cross River State  Governor,  Ben Ayade  to redeem the pledge of houses made to officials and players of the national U-17 team.

On Tuesday (November 8), it would be exactly three years after the Golden Eaglets massacred Mexico 3-0 in Abu Dhabi to lift the FIFA World Cup for the fourth time in the presence of immediate past governor of the state, Liyel Imoke.

An impressed  Imoke later hosted the team on November 15, 2013 inside the state’s council chamber at the Governor’s office in Calabar where he magnanimously pledged houses for players and officials to be located within the state’s new housing estate scheme in Akpabuyo in Calabar.

The amiable governor said then it was necessary to break away from the norm in order to give a befitting future to players and officials hence the state was duty-bound to reward the team with properties instead of monetary largess.

“We want to partner and invest in you because we believe this kind of investment (house property) would yield better dividends in the future even if you no longer want anything to do with football,” Imoke told the victorious team in the presence of top officials of Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) and other state’s executives.

” It is three years now that we won the World Cup and the then Governor Imoke pledged all the 21 players and 10 officials houses as reward but it is unfortunate that we are yet to be given these houses despite several appeals,” stated coach Manu Garba.

“It’s really painful that we don’t have our houses  even after three years and I wonder why they are yet to give us the houses promised by former  Governor Imoke ,” lamented Godwin Saviour who is now with Belgian club, Roeselare. We just have to keep begging our new governor and pray they give us these houses because we did the state and Nigeria proud in 2013,” added Godwin.

The former commissioner was among over 1,000 appointees Ayade announced yesterday.

In a statement on his Facebook wall, Ochinke said: “My attention has been drawn to radio announcements that I have been appointed Chairman of the Cross River State Diaspora Fund Board by Governor Ayade. While I thank the governor for having confidence in my capacity by giving me this appointment, I am unable to accept this responsibility. I have had the privilege to express my views on the size of government in private discussions with Governor Ayade. I still hold those views.

“I have also provided the governor at those discussions with additional reasons why I cannot take an appointment at this time. Those reasons remain valid and I will keep them private still.

“Meanwhile, I thank all well-wishers who have called me to congratulate me on this appointment. Your affection is appreciated and I hope you show me understanding in my decision. I will continue to support the government for our common good.

“I make this decision confident that there are very capable citizens who can step in and take my place. Thank you all and thank you Your Excellency.”

  • Ayade reappoints Uko as carnival consultant

Ayade reappoints Uko as carnival consultant

THE governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade, has re-appointed travel expert, Mr Ikechi Uko, as consultant for the international aspect of the carnival.

The move is part of efforts to re-position Carnival Calabar as the number one event in Africa.

Mr Ikechi Uko, who is the team leader of Team Africa, is also the organiser of the Akwaaba African Travel Market.

He was appointed last year by Governor Ayade to help create the international version of the carnival.

No fewer than 11 countries participated at the last edition of the festival which was deemed successful.

Based on the success of last year’s event, the governor re-appointed Mr Uko to grow the event in 2016 with a mandate to bring more countries to the biggest street party in Africa.

The 2016 edition of the carnival is expected to be bigger and better as last year’s event was the first carnival organised by the governor.

The Bikers Day has also been slated for December 27, with over 10, 000 bikers expected to participate in the major biking showpiece in West Africa.

December 28 is the main draw, which is the Street Carnival. Last year’s event had over 2.5million visitors in the city for the party.

The international carnival, which will hold on December 29, is expected to grow bigger than last year’s maiden edition.

Already the Carnival Commission has inked an MoU with the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) to promote this year’s event globally with three- and five-day packages for tourists.

The chairman of the carnival commission, Mr Gabe Onah, said that the arrangement with NATOP will complete the product and make it available to more families to visit and enjoy the fun.

He pointed out that the satellite TV channel, Nickelodeon, will debut this year at Tinapa to further excite the children.

The president of NATOP, Mr Nkereuwem Onung, has praised Carnival Calabar for reaching out to professionals to market the biggest tourism product in Nigeria to the world.

He promised that NATOP members would soon launch packages for people to sign on for this year’s carnival.

  • Understanding Ayade’s essential humanism

Much of the significant critical issues in the keenly contested 2015 governorship election in Cross River State were centred on the qualities and pedigrees of the contestants. This became necessary as it was glaring that a precedent had already been set in the quality of materials the state had thrown up as governors since the current political dispensation began in 1999. Donald Duke (1999-2007) and Senator Liyel Imoke (2007-2015) represent a bold testimony to the emerging trend of enthroning young and brilliant people at the apogee of political leadership across the world. And like his predecessors, Senator Ben Ayade is a man of composite vision, who has indeed enunciated a new governing philosophy and a new set of ideas that can act as catalysts in moving the state to greater heights.

Just under 16 months after his inauguration as governor, Ayade has demonstrated that he was prepared for the job and that he had studied and appreciated all the challenges the state is faced with before stepping in. He has lined up programmes and policies, commenced implementation of projects, which when completed, would move the state to its pride of place even without oil. At a time when the Calabar/Ikom Federal Road has become a death trap, when transiting from any other part of the state to its capital or vice versa has become a nightmare with several man-hours being lost to embarrassing craters and potholes, the governor completed the design and the de-bushing of the 260km Calabar-Katsina-Ala superhighway after President Muhammadu Buhari performed the ground-breaking ceremony last year.

As a strong commitment to his vision to developing the state, he was able to bring President Buhari to Cross River State to flag off the event in spite of the President’s tight schedule. He is the first governor and one from an opposition party in the present administration to attract the president to his state. According to the governor, this road will reduce the journey from Calabar to Obudu, currently eight hours, to just about two hours and reduce incessant carnage on the existing road and also facilitate quick movement of cargoes from the South to the North and vice versa. With the existence of more than one thousand kilometre-network of feeder roads built by the immediate past government across the state, this Ayade initiative would help facilitate the movement of farm produce from local communities to urban centres.

Because of his insistence on human capital development, Ayade places emphasis on industrialisation that consequently creates employment opportunities for the people. He has established the Calabar Garment Factory, one of the biggest in the world. The factory alone has generated about 3000 jobs.

He has also established the state Green Police through which 1,500 people have been engaged. He has maintained a very cordial relationship with organized Labour in the state through prompt and regular payment of salaries. The Calabar Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Company which will employ 2000 workers is under construction. There is also the Calabar Rice City which is sitting on 3000 hectares of land with the aim of massively producing highly nutritious and vitaminised rice for local consumption and export.

It is noteworthy to state here that aside from the completion of the Calabar Mono-rail project, the government of Ayade has completed the 5,000 capacity Calabar International Convention Centre. He has opened up the state to investors and has embarked on new vistas like his forays into solid minerals and real estate development.

Again, it would be recalled that Calabar, the state capital was the first political capital of Nigeria. This became possible because the early European missionaries who came into the interior coast of West Africa discovered our territories through water. Yet it is very unfortunate that almost 200 years since the exploration and more than 50 years after their departure, the Calabar port is as shallow and as dry as a swimming pool in a living home. This is attributable to the failure of the Federal Government to dredge the Calabar River to the Atlantic Ocean. Over the years, internal wrangling between the Federal Ministry of Transport and the Federal Inland Waterways has resulted in failure of government to develop the waterways and a lull in economic activities along the coastal axis especially in the Calabar metropolis. Ayade, aware of what the state stands to gain if the Calabar Port functions optimally, has commenced the processes for the construction of the Bakassi Deep Seaport. This would encourage and promote export trade from the state and bring about expansion of business and economic activities across the state.

Another landmark action taken by Ayade since his assumption of office as governor is his investment in the psychology of workers in the state. Before he came in the saddle, irregular payment of salaries was threatening the joys of workers in the state. But upon assumption of office, Ayade introduced a fresh initiative to tackle the problem. He invited all stakeholders including banks operating in the state to a brainstorming session to proffer solution to the problem and came up with the resolution that henceforth, workers would get their salaries on the 25th of every month.

Upon his assumption of office, Ayade discovered that he was inheriting an aging workforce in the civil service. What did he do? He swiftly lifted the 23-year old freeze on recruitment and ordered fresh intakes as a way of reinvigorating the jaded civil service. This is in addition to other job creating opportunities that are beckoning.

For those who had been to Cross River State from the administration of Donald Duke to the last days of the Imoke years, it was indisputable that Calabar was the cleanest state capital in Nigeria. The story is told of how a United States-based Nigerian from Enugu State visited Calabar during the 2013 annual Calabar Carnival and Christmas Festival. Within just two weeks of his stay in Cross River State, having been treated to the traditional hospitality of the people, the palatable cuisines and, above all, the environment, topography and landscaping, the young man went back to California to pick his wife and two kids to Calabar where they have now made their permanent place of abode. Calabar still remains one of Nigeria’s very clean cities as Ayade personally supervises the evacuation of refuse. Everywhere, the governor is seen giving instructions or directives to people to carry out one assignment or the other while he implements some himself.

His administration has also commenced the city capping exercise, to increase urban afforestation and green areas across the city of Calabar.

Yet, undoubtedly, Senator Ayade, a renowned professor of Microbiology could not have manifested such populist ethos out of the blue. At the Seventh Senate where he represented Cross River North Senatorial District, until recently when he stepped aside to contest the governorship primaries of his state, Ayade was one of the most active voices. As a parliamentarian who was at home with the condition of his people, his contributions to debates and sponsorship of bills were always proofs of his undying love for the poor and the downtrodden in Nigeria. Whatever action he undertook in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly was always a direct reflection of his compassion and feelings for the man in the street. Before he left the Senate in which he was inaugurated on June 6, 2011 as a greenhorn, Ayade’s output of bills was overwhelming.

He sponsored a total of 18 bills, the second highest in the life of the Seventh National Assembly. Some people may assail his style as too liberal because of his penchant for getting things done immediately. But his preference for innovative, non-bureaucratic way of governing is more democratic than the old government model- centralized, top-down, offering standardized services delivered by public monopolies, which worked well during the colonial era but no longer fits the needs of our increasingly diverse society in the Information Age. Not only does the governor run an all-inclusive administration with open door policy, the man is a model of civilised political culture. As he is poised to complete these projects and generate employment for our teeming graduates, Cross Riverians should drum up support for this philosopher King and should not allow anything to distract him.

    PDP pledges loyalty to Ayade

Cross River State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday pledged absolute loyalty and support to Governor Ben Ayade.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Odama Egbung, the party lauded the governor for his “sterling performance in office.”

the Statement said: As we await the Supreme Court verdict on your eligibility, on December 9, we do so with so much hope and excitement, even as we prepare and rehearse for the biggest celebration of your ultimate victory.”

The party noted specifically that “In the last one year of your administration, you have demonstrated in both words and action your unwavering commitment to turn around the economy of the state through industrialisation and infrastructural development. We are more than convinced that you will see through your vision for our dear state.”

The party restated that Ayade had been promoting the welfare of the state’s workforce, with prompt and regular payment of salaries.

“It is particularly instructive that while many of your counterparts across the the country are grappling with the challenges of paying salaries of their workers, you have made it one of the cardinal points of your policy as a governor. You have not only succeeded in paying salaries , you have equally demonstrated an uncanny ability to manage resources and persons.

“Again, while other states are busy laying off workers, you have shown yours is an administration with a human face. You expanded government not because the state has so much but because you care so much by  providing a shoulder for the not so strong to lean on.”

The party which urged Ayade to remain focused and not be distracted by those bent on distracting him from attaining his lofty vision for the state further said: “As a party, we urge you not to be distracted by those whose pastime is to cause disaffection within the polity, but to remain resolute as God is on the throne to rule inn the affairs of men. In due course, the ultimate victory is certain and we shall roll out the drums to dance the jiggida dance of  victory. We are with you from start to finish.”

Cross River Assembly pledges loyalty to Ayade

Cross River State lawmakers yesterday urged Governor Ben Ayade to remain focused.

The 25 lawmakers, led by SpeakerJohn Gaul Lebo visited the governor and urged him not to be distracted. They pledged their collective and total loyalty.

The Speaker said: “For you, this is your turning point, for after December 9, Ben Ayade’s new dimension will have to emerge. By December 9, you will value the office of the governor because your current trial ahead is a trial of the innocence. I want to assure you that as a House, we are strongly behind you in prayers.”

Lebo added: “You have done so well in Cross River State and in the last few months we passed through a lot with you as a governor. We believe that the clarity of your vision as a leader is not in doubt and it is obvious that you have given us a drive to galvanise our collective intelligence as a community to put together in supporting the political and economic direction of Cross River State.”

He said: “It calls for a sense of responsibility on our part to come together to share this moment with you and to pledge our support. We campaigned and contested elections with you and your deputy to serve the state. So anything that happens to your mandate will also affect us.”

Other legislators said having consulted their constituents, they had their mandate to assure the governor of their unalloyed support and prayer, while enjoining him to remain focused.

Ayade said he would not lose focus

He said: “I am completely undistracted and holding on to God as my pillar. As I supplicate for God’s mercy, I ask that God sees my heart and ensures that every single word I have pronounced, He should manifest my word.”

The governor added: “I am sure that this nation needs a political surgery to put an end to the level of enmity that politics brings and the level of hatred that comes with politics.”

Highpoint of the visit was the signing into law of two bills, which included the Cross River State Statistics Bureau Amendment Bill and the Infrastructure, Safety and Regulatory Agency Amendment Bill.
