    Five men in court for theft of laptops, cameras, others

    Five men were on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly breaking into an apartment and stealing five laptops, four cameras and other valuables worth N2.9 million.

    The accused, Chukwukebuka Onuoha, 39; Charles Ejezie, 35; Chimobi Nwaeze, 28; Tosin Oyetakin, 30 and Ernest Azuka, 23, all residents of Ajegunle Area of Lagos, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and burglary.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 12 at Ekundayo Street, Ajegunle, Lagos.

    He said the accused conspired among them to break into the apartment of one John Olomu and committed the act.

    “The accused and his accomplices used a sharp object to gain access and were able to carry out the operation because the owner of the apartment had gone to work.

    “The accused and his cohorts were caught by the complainant’s neighbour, who saw the accused coming out with laptops and other valuables.

    “She raised an alarm and the people in the compound came out and apprehended the accused while they were trying to escape.

    “Olomu reported the case to the police immediately his neighbours notified him about the theft incident and the accused were arrested,” Imhonwa said.

    The offences contravened the provisions of sections 287, 307 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges levied against them.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing; Section 411 stipulates two years for conspiracy while Section 307 stipulates seven years for burglary.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She adjourned further hearing in the case until Sept. 19.

    Two men face trial for defrauding employer

    Two men – Oluwaseun Oluyemi and Fisayo Ojugbele – who allegedly defrauded their employer of N2.36 million, were on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Oluyemi, 18, and Ojugbele, 36, both residents of Isolo area of Lagos, are facing a four-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Simeon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offences between Nov. 2014 and March 18, 2017 at Isolo.

    Imhonwa said the accused, who worked in the accounts department of Jeed Trinity Schools located at Isolo, Lagos, collected the sum of N2.36 million from parents as school fees.

    He said the accused failed to remit the money into the school’s account and converted it to personal use.

    The prosecutor said the case was reported by the proprietor of the school, Mr Idornigie Joseph, to the police.

    Imhonwa also alleged that the accused forged an Access Bank teller of the school’s account which he gave to parents.

    “The fraud was detected by auditors who were invited to check the school’s accounts.”

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 314, 365 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, in her ruling, granted each of the accused N300,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

    Osunsanmi said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also provide two years’ tax clearance.

    The case was adjourned until Sept. 7 for mention.

    Artisan arraigned over theft of N886,000 building materials

    For allegedly stealing aluminum windows and copper wire worth N886,000, a 34-year-old labourer Jidda Oseni, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Oseni, who resides at Berger on the outskirts of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

    Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, the  Police prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in June at Isheri North GRA, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused stole the aluminum windows and copper wire belonging to Mrs Esther Idemudia.

    Imhonwa said when the complainant discovered that the accused had stolen some of the building materials at her site, she reported the case to the police, who arrested him.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.

    Oseni, however, denied the charge.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted him bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until Oct. 10 for mention.

    Two brothers docked over forgery, theft of sister’s N25m

    Three men, including two brothers, who allegedly forged a document and stole N25 million belonging to their sister, Uzezi Obahor, were on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The two brothers, Paul Obahor, 42; Isaiah Obahor, 32; and Sunday Okovwutu, 52, residing in Ogba area of Ikeja, are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, forgery and failing to report felonies.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in April 2015 at Allen Avenue, Ikeja.

    He alleged that the two brothers conspired with Okovwutu to steal their sister’s money.

    Imhonwa claimed that Paul fraudulently converted N25 million, being proceed from the sales of a piece of land belonging to the complainant, to his own personal use.

    The prosecutor said that Paul gave his younger brother and Okovwutu N2 million each, so that they would not tell the complainant that he had sold the land.

    Imhonwa also alleged that the accused used forged documents to sell the piece of land.

    He said that when Uzezi discovered that her brothers had sold her land and spent the money, she reported the matter to the police and the accused were arrested.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.

    The offences contravene Sections 98, 287, 363 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, granted each of the accused bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsanmi adjourned further hearing in the case until Aug. 28 for mention.

    Woman accused of beating co-tenant arraigned for assault  

    A 30-year-old woman, Vivian Ottah, who allegedly assaulted her co-tenant, Modupe Lawal, by beating her to  pulp  was on Wednesday arraigned  in  an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Ottah, who resides at Olalubi Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.

    Police Prosecutor Simeon Ihonwa told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 22 at her residence.

    Ihonwa said the accused assaulted the complainant over an undisclosed argument they had.

    “She pulled the complainant’s hair and beat her. Efforts by some other co- tenants to settle the matter failed,’’ he said.

    Ihonwa said the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.

    The offence, he said,  contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, granted the accused  bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment  to the Lagos State Government.

    Osunsanmi adjourned the case till  Sept. 14 for mention.

    Conductor charged with unlawful possession of firearms

    The police in Lagos on Monday charged a teenage bus conductor, Akeem Durodola, with unlawful possession of a gun and four rounds of ammunition.

    Nineteen-year-old Durodola, who has no fixed address, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, the conductor committed the offences on April 26 at about 5.10.a.m. at Sabo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

    Imhonwa said that some policemen on patrol caught the accused with a locally made pistol and four live cartridges.

    The prosecutor added that the police recovered from the teenager, some offensive weapons, ATM cards belonging to some people, an international passport and a driver’s licence, which he could not give satisfactory account of.

    He noted that the offences contravened Sections 330 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsanmi said that the sureties must be landed property owners in Lagos State, gainfully employed and should provide evidence of two years’ tax payment to the state government.

    The case has been adjourned until Aug. 31 for mention.

    Police arraign labourer over theft of N1.6m building materials

    A 27-year-old labourer, Musa Abu, who allegedly stole building materials valued at N1.62 million, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Abu, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that Abu, on April 12 around 11.00 p.m at Ikeja, stole 65 bags of cement and marble tiles valued at N1.62 million.

    Imhonwa said that the accused and others still at large broke into Mr Akintola Daramola’s building site and made away with the materials.

    He said the accused was employed as a labourer at the complainant’s building site.

    “The accused was caught by security guards, while trying to smuggle out the stolen goods from the building.

    “He was apprehended and handed over to the police while his accomplices fled the scene of the crime,” Imhonwa said.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of stealing.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, admitted the accused to a bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsanmi said that the sureties must be relations of the accused and be gainfully employed with the evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until Aug. 3 for trial.

    Sex worker faces trial for taking customer’s nude pictures

    Davids, 27, a resident of Ikeja, is facing a two-count charge of intent to extort by blackmail and to steal.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused, a sex worker, committed the offences at 11.00 p.m. on April 28 at Isaac John Street, Ikeja.

    Imhonwa said the accused, a suspected sex worker, had gone to enjoy herself with the complainant, Chukwuemeka Ofoegwu, in a hotel.’’

    He said the accused took the nude pictures of Ofoegwu in the hotel without his consent with the intention to blackmail him.

    He said the accused threatened to post the pictures on the social media if the complainant refused to pay her the sum of N5 million.

    The prosecutor said that the accused also sent threat messages to Ofoegwu’s cell phone.

    “Davids snapped Ofoegwu while he was naked in the hotel without his consent. She demanded N5 million otherwise she would post the pictures online if her demand is not met.”

    The offences contravened Sections 299 and 300 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsanmi said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also provide evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until July 12 for hearing.

  • Undergraduate faces armed robbery charge, remanded in prison

    A 24-year-old student, Chijioke Samson, who allegedly broke into a house and robbed a woman, Mrs. Modupe Adebayo of her wedding ring and laptops at gunpoint with others still at large, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Samson, who resides in Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge bordering on unlawful possession of firearms and stealing.

    Although the accused denied the charge, the prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on April 3 at about 9.30 p.m. at No. 21, Ore-ofe St., off Governor’s Road, Ikotun.

    He said the accused broke into the complainant’s house and robbed her of her wedding ring, two laptops, a phone, all valued at N575, 000 and N108, 000 cash.

    “The accused was apprehended by the police in his escape bid while accomplices fled in an unmarked car.’’

    According to Imhonwa, police recovered one locally-made gun with two live cartridges from the accused.

    The offences contravened Sections 295, 296 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison and directed that the case file should be sent to the State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Osunsanmi adjourned the case until July 24 for mention.

    Lagos marketer arraigned for N1.6m property theft

    A 39-year-old marketer, Nicholas Uzomba, was on Monday charged with stealing a company’s products worth N1.6 million at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Uzomba, who lives in Surulere area of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of false pretences, fraud and stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    But the Police Prosecutor Simeon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in August 2016 at No. 24, Odetola St., Surulere.

    He alleged that the accused obtained property worth N1.6 million from Aurum Group of Companies owned by the complainant, Mrs Maurice Etim, on the pretext of promoting the products.

    Imhonwa also said that the accused also collected an EcoBank cheque for N300,000 from the complainant for logistics in promoting the products using his company — Buzz Technic Consult Ltd.

    “Uzomba sold  the products and converted the money to personal use and absconded; efforts to reach him on phone were unsuccessful.

    “He was, however, apprehended by the police.”

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 312 provides seven years for false pretences.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 and two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until June 26 for mention.
