‘Lagos committed to National Social Register’

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the state remains committed to advancing social protection programmes through the National Social Register (NSR) as a tool to reach vulnerable households.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Sam Egube, gave the assurance at a one-day stakeholder engagement with the theme: “Advancing Social Protection through the National Social Register.”

He commended President Bola Tinubu for repositioning the NSR as a credible platform for delivering interventions.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos State had domesticated the operations of the NSR under its Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

“The register is not just a database; it is a lifeline for millions of Nigerians. I will like to commend our great leader.

“Lagos is aligning with this vision by ensuring the system is strengthened, transparent and accountable. The Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning is ensuring that all residents especially the vulnerable residents are registered,” Sanwo-Olu said.

National Coordinator, National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office, Ms. Funmi Olotu, said the register had become one of the world’s largest social protection databases with more than 19 million households captured and more than 70 million individuals, making it one of the largest social protection databases in the world.

She said that the recent integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) into the register was transforming it into a more reliable and inclusive system.

“As of August 31, a total of 7.68 million household records had been updated across the 36 states. From these, over 9.5 million NINs were recorded, with more than 8.3 million successfully validated,” Olotu said.

She described  the achievement as remarkable.

“The real story behind the numbers is that mothers in rural areas, displaced households and young Nigerians seeking opportunities are beginning to see a government that recognises their struggles and is deliberate about supporting them,” she said.

A senator representing Lagos West, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, described the register as collective commitment to building a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient platform.

She stated that the gathering marks a critical step in the government’s desire to reach the poor and vulnerable population in Nigeria.

She emphasized that NSR, is not merely a database but the backbone of the nation’s capacity to deliver aid with transparency, monitoring, and respect for human dignity.

Dr Badamasi Lawal, Chief Executive Officer, National Social Investment Programme Agency, said that the NSR was the cornerstone of social protection in Nigeria.

He said that subsidy removal, inflationary pressures and widening inequalities had made social protection not a choice but a necessity.

“We cannot achieve inclusive growth if the poor and vulnerable remain unseen. The register is not a static database but a living instrument of hope. Collaboration between  the federal and state governments, partners and civil society, will ensure that no Nigerian is left behind,” Lawal said.

He added that aligning interventions with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola  Tinubu would guarantee fairness, accountability and impact in service delivery.

In his goodwill message, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Dr Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, said that social protection should be seen as a duty of the state and society rather than an act of benevolence.

“Giving to the poor is not charity, it is social responsibility,” he said.

‘Lagos ready to drive regional digital transformation’

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated the state’s readiness to drive regional digital transformation and lead the continent in technological innovation.

He spoke yesterday at the opening of GITEX Nigeria held yesterday in Lagos. The event was a follow up to the  Abuja programme,  where Government Leadership & AI Summit launched GITEX Nigeria on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu also lauded the over $6 billion inflows in foreign tech investment to Lagos between 2019 and 2024, cementing the state’s position as the epicentre of Africa’s digital growth.

He explained that the state today hosts hyperscale data centres and extensive fibre connectivity, accounting for more than 70 per cent of Nigeria’s total tech inflows. Already Nigeria’s undisputed innovation hub, Lagos is also home to 23 of the country’s 28 fastest-growing companies, according to the Financial Times report.

The programme has officially opened Nigeria’s to West Africa’s largest tech, AI, and startup show.  As local and international guests descended on the nation’s commercial and innovation capital for a potentially future-defining two days, anticipation was high for the conversations shaping Africa’s digital trajectory.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos remains ‘a launchpad for Africa’s tomorrow’ – ready to propel Nigeria’s quest for a data-driven government and digitally empowered population.

Held under the patronage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GITEX Nigeria takes place across Abuja and Lagos from 1-4 September.

The programme is supported by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the event is endorsed by Lagos State Government and organised by KAOUN International, global producer of GITEX events.

Elaborating on Lagos’s digital economy leadership credentials and quest to harness technological capabilities for the betterment of regional society, Sanwo-Olu stated: “Lagos is not just a city for today – it is Africa’s innovation nerve centre and a launchpad for Africa’s tomorrow. At the heart of our efforts to unlock digital transformation possibilities is an unshakeable belief that governance in the 21st century must be digital, inclusive, and data-driven.

As Peter Drucker once said, ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it’. Here in Lagos, we are creating that future, building a data-driven government where policy decisions respond to real-time insights and inclusive connectivity empowers every citizen in one of the world’s most vibrant tech ecosystems.”

Addressing GITEX Nigeria attendees, Hon. Minister Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, emphasised the essential nature of sustained digital economy development, insisting: “The digital economy is not just about mobile apps or platforms; it is about technical efficiency and delivering productivity gains that transform entire sectors.

This is why President Bola Tinubu has placed the digital economy at the heart of the Renewed Hope agenda. His vision is very clear – that technology must not only grow GDP but also expand opportunities, reduce inequality, and create shared prosperity for all Nigerians. Under the President’s leadership, Nigeria has embraced the digital economy as a key driver of inclusive growth. We are not building just for elites; we are building for every Nigerian.”

Reflecting on the significance of GITEX Nigeria making its way to Lagos, Director-General/CEO of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, said: “The energy is palpable, and the potential is boundless. Nigeria and Lagos in particular are a crucible of innovation, where raw talent meets the unshakeable will to succeed, a factory of unicorns.

Lagos is the place where people use talent and come up with solutions without infrastructure. In other places, they use capital infrastructure to fuel innovation, while here, we use our resilience. Because we have no options, and we need to create the solutions. We are ready for it. As a nation, our vision is clear.”

GITEX Nigeria is West Africa’s largest gathering of technology visionaries, industry leaders, and decision-makers overseeing digital transformation of non-tech sectors. The event also presents Nigeria’s largest and most globally diverse investor programme, facilitating concierge meetings between startups, investors, corporates, industry leaders, and prospective partners.

Discussing the unique value proposition that Lagos presents businesses, Trixie LohMirmand, EVP of Dubai World Trade Centre and CEO of KAOUN International, organisers of GITEX Nigeria, said: “Lagos is a mega high-speed technology testbed that is dense, diverse, and demanding, where SMEs, startups, and entrepreneurs succeed not by conventional rules but by distinctiveness and necessity-driven innovation. Rising above power outages, currency fluctuations, and maturing infrastructure, they scale faster and endure longer. Survive and thrive in Lagos, and your products and solutions can compete and flourish anywhere around the world.”

The event runs with support from partners AWS, Cisco, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Kaspersky, Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy; Federal Ministry of Youth Development, and Space42.

Group seeks Christian inclusion in politics, commends Tinubu’s mid-term performance

A group, The Centre for Politics and Governance (CPG), has canvassed inclusion of Christians in politics.

The group, which is the political arm for the Renewed Ministers for Christ (RMC), also gave an assessment of the mid-term administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to Bishop Dr. Theophilus Taiwo Ajose, the group’s National Secretary, the RMC is a formidable spiritual, national, political and representative voice of the Charismatic, Pentecostal and Apostolic movement of the Body of Christ in Nigeria and Diaspora.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, the President of the Christian-based advocacy group, Bishop Stephen Ogedengbe, assessed the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration at its midterm mark and raised concerns about religious imbalance in political representation at the local government level.

He said: “Our mandate for this season is to operate with Prov. 29:2.

“We have the mandate to make sure that the righteous always mount to the position of power, and it cannot come with derision, we have to work for it, we have to pray for it and we have to put action into it.

“Ladies and gentlemen and members of the press on behalf of the Centre for politics and governance (CPG), I welcome you to this very special occasion and also to the assessment of Mr. President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, since this is his midterm session, and also to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“We want to thank God for the stability and progress of our democracy. Democracy since 1999 has been standing in our nation and we have cause to give glory to God because there has been no military intervention, we know what has been happening with some other West African countries.

“As an organization committed to good governance and Christian integration in politics, we monitored the administration’s performance and specifically we are concerned about the recent primary elections in Lagos state where Christians were grossly marginalized as party candidates among various political parties.

“As a matter of fact, I doubt if we have up to 10-20% of Christian candidates leading 57 local governments in Lagos state, we may not have up to 30/40 percent of vice chairmen also Christians. We are concerned about this, as this development brings about questions about representation and fairness in our democratic process. This is a big concern.

“We therefore urge political parties ensure equitable representation, and opportunity for all Nigerians regardless of their religious affiliations. We are not saying, we should have 80/90 percent, we are only saying there should be balance, so that equity brings justice and peace. So we are praying that before the election, if there’s anything that should be done, we want it to be done.

“Our assessment aims to promote constructive dialogue, accountability and inclusion in governance and that makes sure to appreciate the President’s commitment to democracy and look forward to better engagement so that together we can build a bright future for Nigeria.

“We also want the governor to consider the issue as conduction of the local government election is the responsibility of the state. So the state should look at our concern as we have a lot of representation as Christians who were not entertained or given opportunities. So we want to dialogue and look at it constructively, and we want peace to reign in Lagos state, but we are very concerned that we are not well represented.

He also commended President Tinubu saying, “On that note, we want to appreciate Mr. President for all his efforts, particularly the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, because when the project is completed you can travel across 17 states in the south by road between 5-6 hours, we are praying that in our lifetime this project will be a success.

“We want to commend Mr. President for this bold step of action, and for the other efforts that he is making particularly the local government autonomy, because now local governments have the opportunity to develop their local government.

“Another landmark of Mr. President is the efforts in security, because he has said that soon Nigerians will be recruited for the Nigerian Forest Guard and I want to encourage Christian brothers and sisters to not shy away from this opportunity so that we can protect our country.

In response to a question on what the organisation is doing to galvanise support and curb voter apathy, he said, “If you have Christian representation less than 10 percent, on the day of election many of them will be in their bedrooms, so that’s strong voter apathy and it’s a sign of rejection.

“So to avoid voter apathy, that’s why we said the body of Christ and other organizations that have the coloration of the body of Christ should come together on this matter irrespective of their denomination.”

Bishop Ajose also added that, “We have CPG in all the local governments and so we are mobilizing them, and we are also encouraging Christians to join political parties, become members and take part in what they are doing, because you can’t be a candidate if you are not a member.”
