  • The baby died

This baby gave us enough time to intervene but it’s unfortunate that we lost her when arrangements had been concluded for her surgery.”  The speaker was Dr. Pius Simon, the Consultant Neonatologist who was managing the baby called Aisha before she died. The baby born with her heart outside her chest died on June 14 at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno State.

It was tragic enough that Aisha died. It was even more tragic that she died while waiting for a heart surgery.  A report quoted Dr. Simon as saying that Aisha died of infection because her heart had stayed outside the chest wall for too long.

Before she died, a report said Dr. Simon “did voice his fears for her survival due to the continued exposure of the heart, more so that she was delivered at home and brought to UMTH three days later, hence increasing the chances of infection”.  The doctor reportedly said that the surgery should have been done “within four to six hours after delivery”.

Aisha was admitted at the neonatology centre of the Pediatric Unit of the UMTH three days after her birth in Gonigori in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State. Following the baby’s death, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Council of UMTH, Dr. Mohammed Bashir, made some important clarifications.

Dr. Bashir said:  ”The First Lady Aisha Buhari did not donate any cash through us (UMTH) to the baby. What she was planning to do was to fly the baby to Ghana for a surgery.” He also said: “It was the N2.5m that Yobe State Government gave that we started making arrangement to take the baby to Enugu when she gave up. I am surprised to hear that the First Lady donated N3m for the surgery of the baby. I want to make it categorically clear that we didn’t receive that money here.”

However, certain things remain unclarified. If Aisha got to UMTH three days after she was born on June 5, why was she still waiting for the critical operation at the time she died on June 14?  Could the operation have been performed in Nigeria? Why was Ghana an option?

Aisha’s lamentable death is yet another grim reminder of the inexcusable inadequacies of the country’s health care system. There was enough time for a surgical intervention, which did not happen before she died. Those who allowed her to die without the needed intervention should hang their heads in shame.

The Consultant Neonatologist who was managing Aisha, Dr. Pius Simon, also confirmed her death. He described it as “a sad development”.

He said even in the best of centers, the surgery should have been done within four to six hours after delivery, at most.

“This baby gave us enough time to intervene but it’s unfortunate that we lost her when arrangements had been concluded for her surgery,” he said.

On the money donated for the operation, Dr, Bashir said: “I can’t say anything about that now. I will have to discuss with the people who donated the money. I will get back to you as soon as I have information concerning that.”

Aisha’s remains will be handed over to her parents today.

As at press time yesterday, the parents were still at the hospital trying to sign necessary documents for the release of the body.

  • How my baby was stolen, by mother

How my baby was stolen, by mother

She is still dazed by what happened to her. It looks like a dream, but it is real. Her child was stolen right under her nose.

Yesterday, distraught mother Mrs Damilola Lawal relived how her daughter Fehintola was spirited away by a woman she wanted to help.

Mrs Lawal said she did not know that Mama Oyin, who brought “egg business” to her last Saturday, was not a resident of her community in Agbado, Ogun State.

She said the woman told her that she just moved to the neighbourhood.

Mama Oyin, she said, came back on Monday and asked her where she could get souvenir for her (Mama Oyin’s) child’s birthday.

She decided to go to Abule-Egba to get the souvenir and Mama Oyin offered to carry Mrs Lawal’s daughter.

They took motor bikes, and Mama Oyin’s bike got to Abule-Egba first. She alighted and crossed to the other side of the road. Before Mrs Lawal knew what was happening, she had boarded a commercial tricycle and fled.

Mrs Lawal tried in vain to catch up with her.

The matter was first reported to Elere Police Station, where the Lawals were referred to Abbatoir Police Station and later another station in Sango.

Mrs Lawal told The Nation: “The woman came to me on Saturday that she sells eggs and wants to be supplying us eggs. She said she just moved to the neighbourhood and she wanted to know the church we attend and I told her it’s Christ Apostolic Church. She said we should give her a description of the place and I did.

“On Sunday, she came to church to worship with us and after the service, she was with us in the shop until evening.

“On Monday morning, she came to my shop and said she wants to throw a birthday party for her child and needs a place to get souvenirs to distribute to guests. I told her to get from Alakuko junction. When we were about leaving, I told her I wanted to leave my child but she said I should not leave my child because if she does not get what she wants from Alakuko, she would head to Agege. She quickly took my wrapper and offered to strap my baby to her back. I initially resisted but later I allowed her when she pleaded.

“When we got to Alakuko junction, she said she could not find what to buy, we headed to Agege. When we got to abattoir, the Okada she boarded went before mine. So, she crossed the road before me and took a tricycle going to Agege. That was where I lost sight of her.

“I have never met her before the day she came to my shop and offered to supply eggs. We went to the house she claimed to have moved to but we found nobody there. The house is on Ifelodun Street in Itoki, near Agbado. We went to different police stations. We first went to Elere Police Station at Agege. From there, we were referred to Abattoir Police Station. From there, we were referred back to Sango Police Station.

“We have not heard anything from her since then. The phone numbers she gave us are all switched off. Fehintola is my first child. I am not working presently but I am always at my mother-in-law’s shop, where she sells drinks and eggs. My husband works in a printing press. His name is Babadehinde Lawal.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), described Mrs Lawal as “a careless mother.”

Badmos said the police were investigating the matter.

“We are going to extend our investigation to Ogun State. The two commands will join hands to investigate the matter because that is where the victim’s parent is leaving.”

She urged mothers to take more care of their children “because it is obvious that some people are capitalising on the carelessness of the parents to steal children. People give their children to sudden/strange friends to handle nowadays. So, parents should be careful.”

Badmos said: “She (Mrs Lawal) was careless obviously. Is that not carelessness? You don’t know someone, you don’t know where she lives, you can’t even trace her with her number and you called her a good customer and gave your child to her. A mother, how can you give your child to a total stranger to back for you? Parents need to wake up more than ever before.”

  • Ex-Law School boss seeks living wage for ‘baby’ lawyers

Former Nigerian Law School (NLS) Director-General, Dr. Tahir Mamman (SAN) has urged senior lawyers to pay living wages to young lawyers  to enable them develop their potential as the profession’s future.

Dr. Mamman, a senior partner in J-K Gadzama LLP, spoke at the launch of the Young Lawyers Mentoring Scheme of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos branch.

He urged the young lawyers to be creative and innovative at the early stage of their call to Bar. He decried a situation where senior lawyers pay N20, 000 salary to young lawyers, wondering what they will do with such money.

Mamman said: “Your future is the future of the profession because among you the future Chief Justices of Nigeria, Judges and Justices of Superior Courts and other members of the bench will definitely be recruited. Therfore, you deserve to be paid living wages to reserve and promote the future of the legal profession.

“It is because of the importance of young lawyers to the profession that their law firms embarked on a nationwide robust mentoring programme for young lawyers of which the first batch will commence in Abuja next week.”

In his welcome address, the Chairman of NBA Lagos branch, Mr. Martins Ogunleye, said young lawyers were an indispensable part of the Bar, hence the branch decided to support them through the mentoring scheme. He hailed the pioneer Chairman of NBA Section on Business law (SBL), Mr. George Etomi, who was  chairman of the occasion and the law firm of Olisa Agbakoba for their support  in making the scheme a reality.

Etomi said law is life and that it cuts across every field of human endeavour. He said: “If you want to be great in the legal profession, you must work hard. If you think that you are going to cut corners anywhere, it is not going to work. The only thing you owe yourself to compete globally is hard work.

“If your skills cannot compete globally, you won’t get any job. Lagos branch being the biggest branch in the country must lead the way.“

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr Kazeem Adeniji, who was represented at the event by Mr. Akintunde Eso, urged young lawyers to strive to always be good ambassadors of the profession.

The keynote speaker and Managing Partner of Olisa Agbakoba Legal, Mrs Priscilla Ogwemo, who spoke on “A law firm as a business”  took young lawyers through the management of a successful law firm. She urged them to be innovative and take advantage of the social media to hone their skills

Mrs Joy Harrison-Abiola, Practice Manager of ACAS-law, urged young lawyers to build law firms that will outlive them. She noted that in foreign jurisdictions, there were law firms of over 100 years.

She spoke of “raising institutions and raising entrepreneurial lawyers, adding: “Vision and strategy are at the heart of every successful law firm; building capacity, strong knowledge base and specialisation are the essential qualities of a successful lawyer.”

Pa Tunji Gomez urged senior lawyers to teach young lawyers how to raise money to set up law firms.

“It pains me to see lawyers riding on Okada. I am disgusted seeing lawyers on Okada. These young ones should be taught how to access resources to start the business of law. Business lawyers make more money; so, if you want to be rich, become a business lawyer,”  Gomez said.

  • Police detain mum, four-month-old baby

She went to report at the station, but ended up being detained with her four-month-old baby for five days for alleged murder.

Mrs Idiat Ajisebutu, an hairdresser, went to the Igbogbo Police Station to report the electrocution of Chris while trying to fix her light.

The baby has been released, but the mother has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland.

Her husband, Segun Ajisebutu, who condemned the police action said the late Chris took up the job on the instruction of a welder, Emmanuel.

Ajisebutu said Emmanuel disconnected his wife’s light because she was owing him N2,000. He explained that she paid N1,000 out of the money, prompting Emmanuel to send Chris, his apprentice, to reconnect the light.

Ajisebutu said his wife raised the alarm when Chris was electrocuted, adding that sympathisers advised her to report the incident to the police.

“The apprentice, Chris was reconnecting the electricity when he was electrocuted. My wife raised the alarm and people in the area ran to her shop and saw the body.

“She was advised to report the electrocution to the police and she went to the Igbogbo Police Station at Ikorodu and reported. It happened on April 4.

“The police took her statement and went ahead to detain her with our four months old boy. The police kept my wife and our son in the cell for five days. On  Saturday April 9, they were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba where she is still being held over the death of Chris.

“While my wife was still being held at the Igbogbo police station, the family of Chris came to the station and demanded N2 million as compensation so they can drop the case. My wife told them that she does not have it and so, the police at Igbogbo transferred the case to Panti.”

Following Mrs Ajisebutu’s statement, the police, it was learnt arrested Emmanuel and another person. They have also been transferred to Panti.

Ajisebutu claimed that his wife was beaten up the day she was taken to the Homicide Department because she refused to leave her son.

He said: “At Panti, the officers at the counter tried to take her baby from her, she wept that she should be released as she has nothing to do with the electrocution.

“Moreover, she was the person that reported the matter to the police. As she was pleading and holding on to her child, the policemen started beating her up. They slapped her and forcefully collected the baby and handed him over to my sister in-law.

“The electrocution is unfortunate. We have hired a lawyer to get bail for my wife. My wife is breastfeeding and they detained them for five days. We have gotten a lawyer to help us with our case,” he said.

Their lawyer and Rural Urban Development Initiative (RUDI) president, Ishola Agbodimu, said the infant’s detention would be reported to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

“The family cried to us that all their efforts to stop police from keeping the baby in a cell yielded no results. The case will be reported to the National Human Rights Commission to look into,” he said.

  • Early morning fuel buyers rescue woman in labour

A woman in labour was on Tuesday morning delivered of her baby around Anthony bus stop by well spirited Nigerians queuing for fuel.
The incident according to an eyewitness, Leo Spartani who shared it on Facebook occurred  before 7am at the VIO/LASTMA office at Anthony Bus stop.
Spartani explained that after some women took delivery of the baby, fuel buyers contributed money so that mother and child could be taken to the nearest hospital.
He wrote: “So as I was coming back to my house this early morning,
I meet an old friend and after a brief chit chat he resumes dialing emergency health services: A lady is in labour at the busstop!
“A serpentine queue for fuel, it is not yet 7am, and a woman is in the throes of childbirth in urban Lagos. At a busstop, on the floor, surrounded by women with little but their wrappers and the maternal instinct of support for one of their own…
“These women are running up and down, and the young mother to be is shielded for decency sake away from Lagosian eyes.
“Calls are being made, some Nigerians are praying whilst keeping an eye on their spaces on the queue, and thank goodness the Lagos madness of unruly bus drivers and the conductors hasn’t started.
“The Baby is born… And emergency services take the location of the delivery, Anthony bus stop taxi Park by VIO/LASTMA office. They are still coming…
“The special forces of veteran mothers on the scene assures bystanders that all is well and the baby is wrapped in a clean Ankara,  even as the Oga husband is on his way to the park. There is a conference on the nearest hospital that baby and mother can be taken to…
“All is well, the mother is still dazed,  but the baby is alive, and Nigerians even in this hard times are already contributing money, unsolicited money to the miracle of a safe delivery at the most unlikely of  unsanitary places for the continuation  of life on our planet… We are that lovely a people…The day feels special already…”
Spartani’s post which went viral, attracted commendation from readers, who all agreed that Nigerians have human feelings.

  • Pastor held for ‘baby theft’

    •‘I didn’t steal the child’

The police have arrested Pastor Esther Ozuem, General Overseer of Word Encounter Ministry for alleged child theft.

Mrs Ozuem who is being detained at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) at Panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland, is said to have stolen the nine-month-old boy from a member of her church.

Mrs Ozuem, it was gathered, went to Alakuko Police Station on March 18 to report a case of child abandonment in her church.

But the story changed when detectives discovered that the pastor took the child from his mother, Christianah Ebele, 24, the day she delivered.

According to police investigation, the pastor registered the child at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), where the baby was immunised as Temple Ozuem, with her mother’s name given as Chinyere Ozuem.

The suspect, it was learnt, is also being investigated to ascertain the maternity of her three children.

In her statement, Ebele claimed that she went to the pastor for financial assistance when she was pregnant and the “woman of God” agreed to help her.

She said she was taken to Ozuem’s church by her elder sister who worships there, adding that her sister told the pastor that they were poor and could not take care of the baby.

The woman, who denied abandoning nor selling her baby to the pastor, said she was chased out of her house for attempting to feed the crying child.

“My elder sister took me to her church where I met Pastor Esther. My sister told her that we are poor and we cannot take care of the pregnancy and that when the baby is born, life will be harder for us.

“I was eight months pregnant and she agreed to help me. Pastor Esther took me in and she promised to help establish me financially after I give birth. She told me that she will give me money to start a business and cater for the child.

“However, after I gave birth, she changed towards me. The day I gave birth, it was raining heavily. She refused to take me to the hospital. She brought a nurse to deliver me of the baby. To my shock, Pastor Esther took the baby from me immediately I gave birth and warned me not to touch the child.

“She also told me not to breastfeed the baby and when the baby was crying and I attempted to feed him, she got angry and chased me out of the house in the rain. I was crying but she did not allow me to carry my baby. I had to find my way to my sister’s house and I told her what happened.

“I did not go to the police station because I did not know what to do. Besides, I did not have money. I am very poor and can barely feed myself.

“My mother is also poor and other members of my family are not doing fine financially. So, I decided to leave everything to God. I found out that Pastor Esther took my son and she had a child naming for him without informing me. She named him Temple Ozuem and even took him to the health centre and registered him as her son. I don’t know why she came to report to the police but even now I can’t cater for him.

“I need help and it is not true that I sold my baby. She did not give me any money. I only approached her for help,” she said.

Pastor Ozuem is insisting that she did not steal the baby, claiming that the mother abandoned the child.

Ovulation however, is the primary indicator of fertility in women and also the main requirement for fertilization. Ovulatory disorders are hence one of the most common reasons why women are unable to conceive in this part of the world, and  also account for about one third of the cases of infertility so far recorded.

One significant subject most women should always study and strictly adhere to in order to improve their chances of getting pregnant is the concept of DETOXIFICATION.

Detoxification helps to not only improve the possibility of ovulation, it has also been proven to enhance the quality as well as quantity of eggs produced during ovulatory cycle. This is because detoxification helps in correcting hormonal imbalances and other biochemical hindrances to ovulation. It also increases blood flow to the ovaries and other reproductive organs supplying them with more oxygen to function at their best. It also reduces the heavy metal burden by ridding the body of these harmful chemicals preventing ovulation. Detoxification also enhances weight loss and helps in achieving a healthy body weight.

    CASE STUDY:

Uncle George was an Investment Banker with fantastic career profile. He was one of those we could call lucky. Good job, good wife, lovely cars. But something was wrong somewhere. Uncle George and his wife have been married for 7 years with no child. The emotional disturbance especially to the wife was already affecting her obviously. They have done several things with no visible result.

Invariably they opted for IVF. As at the time the IVF was done, she was already 33 years old. Alas, it FAILED!

N1.2 million WENT DOWN THE DRAIN!

It wasn’t really the money that got Uncle George frustrated this time around, it was the effort that went into the whole process. Two years after, our path crossed and I introduced Uncle George to the concept of DETOXIFICATION. It became obvious to him that undergoing a detox program prior to the IVF would have increased their chances of success with the procedure.

They bought my recommended Natural Fertility Booster and Detox Supplement pack containing one of the best range of natural ingredients around the world and used it consistently for about 4 months.

    IT HAPPENED!

The husband, who also use the product was able to produce viable spermatozoa unlike the abnormal features common in most spermatozoa when viewed under the microscope.

Beyond the issue of infertility, there was another life threatening condition Uncle George was contending with. He was overweight at the time with a protruding belly. He could hardly climb successfully a staircase of 10 steps without stopping to rest. He was already weighing 114kg at the time.

IF YOU WANT TO CONCEIVE IN A NATURAL WAY, THEN YOU NEED TO DO THESE THINGS

Do you know that healthy lifestyle choices can help you promote and increase your fertility level?

Come along as we reveal some secrets to you. Secrets nobody will ever tell you.

    1. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT: Being overweight or significantly underweight can affect hormone production and inhibit normal ovulation. Maintaining a healthy weight can increase the frequency of ovulation and likelihood of pregnancy.

If you are overweight and wish to reduce it drastically in a very natural way without any negative side effect, then CLICK HERE ==> http://goo.gl/ZofVh0

    2. PREVENT SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (STIs): Sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea are a leading cause of infertility for women. To protect yourself from STIs, practice safe sex. Limit your number of sexual partners, and use a condom each time you have sex if you are not married— or stay in a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who isn’t infected.

    3. EAT HEALTHY DIET: Untreated celiac disease can harm fertility. Otherwise, there isn’t enough research to suggest a specific diet to promote fertility though but eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and a variety of protein sources will serve you well whether or not you’re trying to conceive.

    4. SCHEDULE REGULAR CHECKUPS: Regular visits to the hospital can help you detect and treat health conditions that might threaten your fertility earlier before it becomes something big.

    5. AVOID THE NIGHT SHIFTS, IF POSSIBLE: Regularly working the night shift might put you at a higher risk of infertility, possibly by affecting hormone production. If you do work the night shift, try to get enough sleep when you’re not working.

While stress won’t totally stop you from getting pregnant, consider minimizing stress and practicing healthy coping methods such as relaxation techniques when you’re trying to conceive.

    WHAT IS THE OFF-LIMIT?

Healthy lifestyle choices count here, too. To protect your fertility:

    1. DON’T SMOKE: Smoking ages your ovaries and depletes your eggs prematurely. If you smoke, ask your health care provider to help you quit and also DETOXIFY YOUR BODY SYSTEM.

    2. LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL YOU DRINK: Heavy drinking is associated with an increased risk of ovulation disorders. If you’d like to get pregnant, consider avoiding alcohol completely.

    3. CURB CAFFEINE: Some research doesn’t support a clear link between too much caffeine and infertility. However, most reproductive experts recommend limiting the amount of caffeine in your diet to less than 200 to 300 milligrams a day if you’re trying to conceive.

    4. BE WARY OF VIGOROUS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Too much vigorous physical activity can inhibit ovulation and reduce production of the hormone progesterone. If you have a healthy weight and you’re thinking of becoming pregnant soon, consider limiting vigorous physical activity to less than five hours a week. If you’re overweight, we can help you reduce it the healthy and natural way with our natural weight/fat loss program. CLICK HERE ==> http://goo.gl/vgv3mn

    5. AVOID EXPOSURE TO TOXINS: Agricultural workers, lab scientist, hair stylists and certain other groups might be at risk of menstrual disorders. Dental assistants exposed to high levels of nitrous oxide, anyone exposed to elevated levels of organic solvents such as dry cleaning chemicals and industrial workers exposed to drugs or chemicals during the manufacturing process also might be at risk of reduced fertility. Share any concerns you might have with us, we are here to assist you.
