Messi theme park to open in Beijing

Chinese fans will be able to celebrate the achievements of Barcelona great Lionel Messi at a new theme park to be built in Beijing.

The Messi Experience Park, which is being launched by the five time Ballon d’Or winner in collaboration with Chinese broadcaster Phoenix Group and Spanish media company Mediapro, is set to open in 2019.

The theme park will have 20 indoor and outdoor attractions in a 42,000 square metre space which will ‘immerse visitors in Messi’s universe,’ a statement from the player’s Leo Messi Management group said

‘I hope to provide them with an experience they have never had before and encourage people to play football from an early age,’ he told reporters.

David Xirau, director of Mediapro Exhibitions said the theme park will ‘use the most advanced technology’ to combine attractions with spaces to play the world’s most popular sport.

Companies from China have invested heavily in foreign clubs in recent years as President Xi Jinping has called for the country to develop a world-class soccer industry.

Chinese ambitions for soccer have also extended to spicing up the domestic league with a clutch of high-profile signings.

Messi is Barcelona’s highest paid player, earning an estimated £35million per year, which is set to increase this summer as he is expected to sign a bumper new long-term contract with Barca, where his current deal runs until 2018.

Messi’s image rights have come under the spotlight since he was charged with avoiding £4m of tax on his commercial earnings between 2009 and 2011.

He was found guilty of tax fraud along with his father Jorge last year, and handed a prison sentence of 21 months and a fine of £1.7m.

His appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court last month although he is unlikely to go to prison.

  • Hazard eyes post Ronaldo, Messi Ballon d´Or

Hazard eyes post Ronaldo, Messi Ballon d´Or

Eden Hazard is confident he can one day land the Ballon d’Or playing for Chelsea, but accepts he may have to wait for perennial winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to retire.
Ronaldo and Messi have combined to win the last nine but Hazard has made a strong case for consideration for the 2017 prize by playing a key role in Chelsea’s bid to land the Premier League title.
And the 26-year-old Belgium playmaker is optimistic his chances will not be harmed by playing in the Premier League.
He told Sky Sports: “I hope to win the Ballon d’Or one day. It’s in my mind.
“If I don’t, it won’t be a problem. I try to make a good career – the best I can – but I think some other players deserve to win it also.
“When Ronaldo and Messi retire, maybe it will be another couple of players like Neymar, Paulo Dybala or Antoine Griezmann, who knows? We will see. It’s not something I think too much about.
“Could I win it? If I play next season, we win the Champions League and I win the World Cup with Belgium, why not?
“In the last 10 years, the Ballon d’Or winners play in Spain, but it’s not automatic. If a player is better in England, he will win it.”
Hazard is hoping Antonio Conte’s men can further his cause by wrapping up the title at The Hawthorns before parading the trophy in front of their fans in next Sunday’s finale at home to already relegated Sunderland.
He added: “We want to celebrate on Friday, then come back to Stamford Bridge and celebrate with the fans.
“We just need to win the game. We all know if we win, we will be champions, so maybe we have a lot of pressure, but we are almost there.
“For me, it’s the same [feeling as when we won the title two years ago].
“The target is always to win trophies. The feeling is always a good one. Two years ago to now, we have one thing in common, which is to win.”

  • Shevchenko set for Chelsea return

    Shevchenko set for Chelsea return

Andriy Shevchenko is set to return to Chelsea next month – as the latest observer of Antonio Conte’s training ground regime.

The former Chelsea striker Shevchenko, now managing his native Ukraine, remains close with Blues owner Roman Abramovich and wants to arrange a visit to the their Cobham headquarters.

Conte has been a welcoming host for the likes of former Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri and England rugby coach Eddie Jones in recent months, and Shevchenko looks set to be his latest visitor.

The 40-year-old manager is keen to tap into Conte’s winning formula which has his former club on the verge of the Premier League title in the Italian’s first season in England.

His Ukraine side harbour still hopes of qualifying for the World Cup next year, though they trail Croatia and Iceland in European qualifying Group I.

A small travelling party of Ukrainian coaches are planning to visit Chelsea’s Surrey base during the run-in in May.

Shevchenko endured a less-successful spell at Stamford Bridge, with the AC Milan legend — signed for a then-British record £30million in 2006 — widely derided as a flop despite winning the FA Cup and the Carling Cup.

He made 76 Chelsea appearances, scoring 22 goals, before being shifted back out on loan to Milan and eventually returning to boyhood club Dynamo Kiev. At the international level he made 111 appearances for Ukraine between 1995 and 2012 scoring 48 goals. He finished third in the Ballon d’Or of 1999 and 2000 before finally winning it in 2004.

Ukraine face a trip to Finland in June in their bid to qualify for Russia 2018.
